Latest On Yankees’ Starting Pitching Pursuits

By Nick Deeds | January 7, 2024 at 10:48am CDT

The Yankees are well-established as seeking an arm to pair with ace Gerrit Cole at the front of their rotation. For much of the offseason, the club had their sights set on NPB star Yoshinobu Yamamoto, though they’ve had to shift gears in the aftermath of the right-hander’s decision to sign with the Dodgers last month. The club has seemingly stepped those pursuits up recently as recent reports have connected the club to both right-hander Dylan Cease via trade and southpaw Blake Snell in free agency. Jon Heyman of the New York Post provided an update on the club’s pitching pursuits recently, noting that “there’s a belief” within the organization that the club will be successful in adding a front-of-the-rotation arm before the season begins. Heyman adds that club chairman Hal Steinbrenner is “on board” with the idea of making a significant addition to the rotation, suggesting a willingness on the side of ownership to spend on rotation improvements.

Of course, commitment to adding a front-of-the-rotation starter and actually doing so are two different things, and Heyman reports that the club has continued to engage with Snell in free agency, though there’s a notable gap between the sides in negotiations. The same goes for left-hander Jordan Montgomery, though Heyman notes that the Yankees believe they have a better shot of signing Snell among the two southpaws. Montgomery, of course, was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2014 draft and spent six and a half seasons in the Bronx before being shipped to St. Louis at the 2022 trade deadline.

Heyman suggests that Montgomery may prefer to return to the Rangers this offseason after winning the World Series with the club last year. Even if that’s the case, however, it’s worth noting that Texas’s front office has indicated the club doesn’t have much room in the budget for significant additions. That could pose a major roadblock to a Montgomery reunion in Arlington, as Joel Sherman of the New York Post recently reported that the left-hander is seeking a contract that would surpass the $172MM Aaron Nola re-signed in Philadelphia for back in November. That ask still positions him as cheaper than Snell, who Sherman notes is believed to be seeking more than $200MM this winter.

As for Cease, Heyman notes that the White Sox and Yankees face a “serious gap” in negotiations, with Yankees brass uncertain whether or not Chicago truly plans to move Cease before the beginning of the season and Heyman noting they’d face in uphill battle in outbidding other potential suitors like the Reds and Orioles for the righty’s services. With that being said, Cease isn’t the only player the Yankees are looking into on the trade market. Heyman reports that the club has discussed a trade with the Marlins as the club fields interest on lefties Jesus Luzardo, Trevor Rogers, and Braxton Garrett as well as right-hander Edward Cabrera, though he adds that those sides don’t appear to be close on a deal, either.

Even so, the Marlins could prove to be a cleaner fit as a trade partner for the Yankees than the White Sox. Miami has a clear need for a starting shortstop as things stand; the club currently has utilityman Jon Berti penciled into the everyday shortstop role with the likes of Vidal Brujan and Xavier Edwards as potential depth options. New York, meanwhile, has plenty of depth in the middle infield, where 2023’s double play duo of Anthony Volpe and Gleyber Torres figure to block youngster Oswald Peraza from regular playing time in the majors. While the Yankees were recently granted additional flexibility in how they handle Peraza via a fourth option year on the slick-fielding infielder, the 23-year-old could make plenty of sense as the centerpiece of a package that lands the Yankees a quality rotation piece.

However the Yankees end up addressing their rotation woes, it’s clear that the club needs to make an addition. Each of Michael King, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez, Luis Severino, and Domingo German have parted ways with the club this offseason by way of either trade or free agency, severely hampering the club’s rotation depth. While Cole provides the club with a reliable, innings-eating ace at the front-of-the-rotation, both Carlos Rodon and Nestor Cortes are coming off 2023 season hampered by injuries and ineffectiveness. Clarke Schmidt’s first season as a regular member of the starting rotation saw him perform on the level of a back-end starter, but without an external addition the club’s final rotation spot would go to an unproven arm such as Clayton Beeter or Luis Gil.

Can we stop saying the Yankees are connected to every pitcher and position player? The Yankees have become a laughing stock. They’re a nothing team and really don’t have ANY resources for a trade, and they aren’t going to hand out over $100 million for a decent pitcher. And Montgomery, Snead, nor Cease are close to worth that. It’s like every writer just adds the Yankees to make his article appeal.

It seems like every offseason and trade deadline we get fools like you declaring the Yankees don’t have “ANY resources for a trade.” Then you’re constantly proven wrong when teams have interest in their prospects. If you clowns spent the same amount of time checking out their farm system as you do writing nonsense on here, you could save yourselves the embarrassment

About as nervous as signing a reigning Cy Young can make a fan for sure.

Snell would be a rollercoaster in NY so they would need to fortify their bullpen as well if they are going to spend big on a 5 inning starter- that might be outside of Hal’s comfort zone.

It should be noted that Dylan Cease has also been a “5 inning starter” (5.35) for his MLB career to this point. He does hold a significant durability edge over Blake Snell or virtually any other MLB starter since debuting in the White Sox rotation in July of 2019. 🙂

Notice the repeated phrase in the first several paragraphs of Yankees reported interest in these players: “Heyman reports.”

It’s not coincidental that they’re all Boras clients (Snell, Monty, Cease). I would take any information reported as it came straight for Boras Corp, and is therefore unreliable unless independently corroborated by Passan or Jack Curry.

If Monty doesn’t want to come back….and I wouldn’t blame him after Cashman’s idiotic statement and trade….I would go hard with Miami. Luzardo or Garrett would be a solid addition even if I have to cough up Volpe. This team is going nowhere without more front line starting pitching. I’m also pushing for Burnes, but I don’t know if MIL is serious about selling or just waiting for someone to offer something insane. They should also be kicking the tires on a guy like Clevinger. We need depth!

If Montgomery wants more than 7/172, let him remain unsigned like Michael Conforto. On a related note, a BBQ owner offered uim free BBQ for life if he resigns with Texas. That’s probably worth only hundreds or thousands a year compared to the million he would get, but it’s certainly a nice gesture.

I think there’s a chance the Yankees hedge their bets. They already gave up pitching arms in the Soto trade. They don’t have a particularly good team as it stands, although Soto is really talented, Soto is only there for the year unless he agrees to an extension–and, he’s going to want to get paid. Cole has an interesting opt-out that the Yankees can void by tacking on another year. If the Yankees don’t have a strong season, I can see them both not bidding on Soto and letting Cole go…and then, with other contracts coming off the books in 2025, getting under the tax as they decide to rebuild.. They are spending too many dollars per WAR. A reset , especially with their general spending power, might be good idea. So, maybe no real bidding on a multiyear contract for a pitcher

Don’t fans understand pitchers are throwing a new slider? The Sweeper is just a name of a slider thrown from a lower arm angle it’s Sweeps. Cole and Snell couldn’t average over a K an IP until 2018, Glasnow was stuck in the Pitt Penn in 2018 they learned a new slider called the Football Slider. Roger Beshens taught them the proof is google Roger Beshens Football Slider twitter and click images. When Roger Beshens taught Glasnow in May 2018 the Rays noticed that slider and starting using it as their blueprint. ALL these pitchers are learning the Roger Beshens football slider, it’s obvious what’s happening if you know the aforementioned.

Any slider puts tremendous stress on your elbow. Hmm. What could possibly go wrong? Here’s an idea: maybe it’s not trying to throw 100 MPH that’s blowing out the elbows of America. So, slider, sweeper, gyroball, screwball, slurve, knuckle curve, etc. New name, same result. For awhile, batters are like “Oooh, what’s that thing?”. Then boom goes the elbow and boom goes the ball. It’s all about command and LOCATION. Period.

There’s a certain grip, tilt and wrist action needed, for the Roger Beshens football slider. Blake Snell and Gerrit Cole know it and never had any issues. That says a lot. They throw it the best cause that grip, tilt and wrist action is perfect. Some have a bad routine, do you know some throw a 100 pitches and do rubber tubing the next day! That’s insanity!

Glasnow learned it in May 2018 while in Pitt, the Rays noticed that new slider and it turned into the Blueprint for the Rays. Google Roger Beshens football slider twitter and click images. There’s the reason pitchers are all of a sudden becoming elite. MLB is in a process of learning it, why do you think Bendix, NG, the Giants guy even have jobs? They are trying to implement it but there’s a power struggle at each tier in the organizations.

A trade with the Marlins is possible but remote. Maybe something along the lines of Peraza & Everson Pereira for either Edward Cabrera (P) or Trevor Rogers (P) plus OF Peyton Burdick might work. At this point, the Marlins aren’t desperate to deal unless it clearly strengthens the club. They like their internal SS options well enough (especially Xavier Edwards) and – all other factors being equal – would prefer to hold on to their pitchers.

Good point. You’re absolutely right. The Marlins can’t afford the luxury of any “glove-first” incomplete players who are rally-killing black holes in the lineup. This year, all our guys have to swing the bat and produce a decent slash line, and MIA management knows this. Therefore, any deal with NY is probably a non-starter.

There’s why there’s a pitch called the sweeper, there’s why Matt Blake, Ethan Katz got hired, theres why in MLB in 2018 more K’s than hits for the first time…

I think the Yanks finally a trade with the Marlins, may Luzardo for Volpe/and prospects or Cabrera for Grissom and Cabrera.

I think they are waiting to see the outcome of the Iowa Caucus and how high Ramaswamy climbs before determining which starter they offer a contract to.

Yankee fans, MLB fans watching a game deserve to know more about the BS sweeper pitch. These pitchers are making MILLIONS of dollars throwing it and nobody is saying the Grip, Tilt and Wrist action how they throw it. Don’t you think the fan would love to know how to throw it so they can teach their kid to get a scholarship or have fun throwing it? Google Roger Beshens Football Slider twitter and click images. Ask me any question about it, I can tell you what ML pitcher I taught on Twitter starting in May 2018. My Facebook has an ex Yankee I taught in May 2018 and he’s now a Special assistant to Chris Young Texas Rangers, Why pitch you think Jon Gray threw? My Football Slider.

Edward Cabrera for Oswald Peraza makes a ton of sense for both sides.

Or if the teams are thinking bigger, Luzardo for Peraza, Pereria and a lower tier arm like Beeter/Gomez.

      @stretch123

I have serious reservations, though, about Peraza’s ability to hit major league pitching. He seems to be a “work in progress” with the bat, rather than the polished, confident hitter we’d need to acquire in any trade involving our starters. Which’s not to say your scenario couldn’t work, just that my gut feeling says no.

I hear you about Peraza. I’d rather get Volpe but not something I think Yanks would do for Cabrera. Cabrera has question marks of his own.

If Yanks are offering Luzardo, could see the ask being Volpe.

They can’t sign anyone. No ace caliber pitchers want to play for the Yankees willingly and they don’t have the chips to trade to the White Sox or for Bieber.

Look at my upper left picture on here. That’s Brandon McCarthy telling me what game he threw my football slider. He asked me how to throw my football slider in May 2018 on twitter. He said he tried my football slider June 2 2018 vs Nat’s and whiffed Rendon, Turner, Gonzalez with it, gave up the HR to Michael Taylor, he needs more reps but it’s gonna be a weapon. Jesse Biddle struck out 8 in 3 IP with my football slider in that June 2 2018 game. The message is on my facebook. Roger Beshens

The Yankees are definetly signing Trevor Bauer, they are a match made in heaven. While I personally believe that Bauer shouldn’t have gotten suspended in the first place, the average Yankee fan doesn’t care about what he did wether the allegation are/ aren’t true. If you’ve ever been to The Bronx, you’d understand the average Yankee clientel. Kids literally walk around by the stadium and slash your tires if you park outside the stadium and if you don’t give them any money. Bauer should be fine assimilating into the Yankee fanbase. Just look at who’ve they have employed. Chapman, German, Cordero, etc. Plus he could be had for a steal

    Maybe Snell, Maybe Soto

I posted this in the Yankees option article yesterday
But they really should consider talking to Miami for Cabera/ Peraza package unless Miami isn’t interested in him.
Yes the Yankees can trade Volpe instead and keep Peraza but don’t see them doing that.

      @Crash_n_burn

Don’t think it’ll happen. Both Volpe and Peraza would have to start doing a lot more hitting before the Marlins would view them as having the kind of trade value to warrant a frontline starter. Right now, those two are overrated, overmatched, and living on the Mendoza line.

Not sure who the gentleman claiming that he invented the sweeper/football slider is. But just so you all know, I was actually the one who invented it. And taught it to the players in the show who use it.. That’s all I can legally say on the matter. Happy Year Of The Dragon to you all!

Start with standard 2 seam grip. I am left handed. So I then shift my index and middle fingers to the left, so they are BOTH on the seam, and then slightly elevate them so I am slightly gripping the top seam as well. Throw at a 3/4 angle, with same effort as fastball, and put major pressure on both fingers/seam upon release.

If its a shortstop the Marlins covet Red Sox are also reportedly engaged in talks with the Marlins and could offer Rafaela, Mayer with Pablo Reyes thrown in to cover til Mayer is ready or even Story and pay down his contract, Any of those options are greater than Peraza. Yanks can’t compete with Sox on expendable shortstops
