AL Notes: Mariners, White Sox, Stroman, Yankees

By Nick Deeds | January 7, 2024 at 12:32pm CDT

The Mariners have been busy on the trade market of late, swapping Robbie Ray for Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani in a deal with the Giants while acquiring lefty slugger Luke Raley in a swap with the Rays that sent infielder Jose Caballero to Tampa. President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto recently spoke to reporters (including Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times) about the deals and the club’s plans for the remainder of the offseason.

Dipoto described the moves as making the Mariners’ roster “more complete” than it has been at any point in the offseason and suggested that if the regular season were to start tomorrow, the club would be satisfied with its roster as currently constructed. The additions of Raley and Haniger certainly shore up the roster’s corner outfield spots, which were the most glaring holes on the roster following the departures of Jarred Kelenic and Teoscar Hernandez. Even as the outfield appears to be set, however, the club’s infield depth took a hit when Caballero was shipped to the Rays. That leaves the Mariners with just Josh Rojas, Luis Urias, and Dylan Moore to handle second and third base with J.P. Crawford entrenched at shortstop and Ty France penciled in as the club’s everyday first baseman.

Despite Dipoto’s vote of confidence in the roster as currently constructed, he left the door open to the Mariners making additional moves as the offseason continues. “…I don’t think we’re done,” Dipoto said (as relayed by Divish), “We still have the desire to find ways to get better. And we certainly have the flexibility from a roster standpoint to go do that.” While it’s unclear how much room the Mariners have remaining in their budget this winter, Dipoto’s comments certainly make it feasible that the club could look to shore up their infield depth before the offseason comes to a close. Gio Urshela, Whit Merrifield, and Amed Rosario are among the mid-level free agent infielders still available on the market.

More from around the American League…

  • The White Sox are continuing to shuffle their front office after hiring Chris Getz as GM on the heels of the club’s midseason firing of Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams last year. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the club is hiring longtime Royals executive Jin Wong as an assistant GM. Wong will handle many of the duties previously assigned to assistant GM Jeremy Haber going forward, as Nightengale adds that Haber is expected to depart the club’s front office before Spring Training begins next month. Wong spent 24 years as a member of the Royals organization after first joining the organization in the scouting department back in 2000. Over his time in Kansas City, Wong filled a variety of roles before eventually rising to the title of VP of baseball administration and assistant GM.
  • Nightengale also reports that free agent right-hander Marcus Stroman has approached the Yankees to express “serious interest” in signing with the club, though he adds that the club has not reciprocated that interest with a contract offer at this point. Stroman, whose free agency MLBTR profiled last week, pitched solidly with the Cubs last year en route to a 3.95 ERA and 3.58 FIP in 136 2/3 innings of work. While the Yankees are in the market for pitching, recent reporting has suggested that the club is focused on top-of-the-market southpaws Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery in free agency, both of whom are generally considered to be a tier above Stroman who stands as one of the stronger mid-market options remaining in free agency.

          How surprising that the Sox would hire yet another Royal. The allure of losing 100+ games and replacing KC as the worst team in the ALC was just too hard to pass up.

      It’s more like Jerry Reinsdorf is probably the worst owner in sports. He’s ruined 2 of Chicago’s 5 sports franchises, single handedly.

          Fan, listing a bunch of baseball writers does nothing to support whatever argument you’re trying to make. If you link to something they wrote to support what you’re saying, that would be a good start.

          I haven’t been to Guaranteed Rate Field, but the White Sox’s recent on-field results do not support your assertion.

          The old Comiskey should have NEVER been torn down. Great fan experience. I must have been to 50 games there. But Reinsdorf wasn’t getting enough suite revenue so he held 2 cities hostage. You now have what some refer to as Second Rate Field.

      White Sox are in a solid spot. Just had a bad year last season. Talent is not the problem. ALL our guys are getting scooped up. Lance Lynn got $12 million. Clevinger is asking for more than that. Atlanta gave Reynaldo Lopez $30 million and trader for Bummer. Giolito is gonna be the ace in Boston.

      Luis Robert may be the best player in the American League with Ohtani with the Dodgers. 130 games out of Eloy Jimenez will bring 35 bombs and 110 RBI’s. We’re gonna get a haul for Dylan Cease. Montgomery is on the way, and is gonna be a stud. We stole Edgar Quero and Ky Bush in the Giolito deal. Noah Schulz is on the way. We will be fine.

          Very Barry:. You’re right. The talent wasn’t the problem last year. It was the negativity lingering over the team since 2021. LaRussa sucked the life out of the players and Grifol is not the person to change things around. He isn’t strong enough. This culture of losing will not go away until Reinsdorf, the architect of the Sox’ demise, is gone.

      They should put make Ty France their second baseman since he has played there. He doesn’t hit enough for first base but does for second base. Put him at first against left handed starters. Put Raley at first base against right handed starters since he has played it plenty before and DeLoach in right. Play Haniger in right against left handed pitching. This will cut down on his chances to get hurt. I realize it is a lot of moving parts but I think it would help them win more games and that is the goal here. One more thing. Use a six man rotation.

        So your idea is to make France worse? He’s not enough of a hitter to be a star 1B, but at least he can play 1B. Sticking him at 2B kills the already marginal defensive value he has, and he’s also coming off a down year at the plate. Making him 2B again forces him to focus harder on defense when he really needs to fix his hitting first and foremost. The platoon of Rojas/UT Guy is a much better 2B as far as defense goes and is okay enough offensively to make it work.

      Depressing take from Dipoto, though he did indicate there is still hope for roster improvement. I dread a repeat of last winter when the Mariners basically called it “good” after signing A.J. Pollock and Tommy La Stella, and trading for Kolten Wong and Cooper Hummell. It seems there has been past talk of acquiring Merrifield. I hope they don’t go that route… he probably wouldn’t quite be another Pollock, but his skills are declining. So far they haven’t traded any of their young pitchers not named Kirby or Gilbert, but they might have to trade Woo or Miller to get an impact hitter. And they could also use a more reliable closer after trading Sewald…

        And the AL West is just loaded. The Astros are getting old but they aren’t going away. The Rangers…need some starters…August? Then Degrom just throws his elbow away in a game 7 win after what’s his name has been carted off the field due to back issues in game 6.

      Agree that it would be disappointing. They aren’t a surefire playoff team as constructed. They’d be crossing their fingers that everything falls their way. Meanwhile, the division is possible– upgrade and go for it.

        Based on the current Fangraphs projections, the 2024 Mariners would have ranked the follow positions in 2023.

        10th in position players
        6th in starting rotation
        19th in bullpen

        Fangraphs is not bullish on Rojas at 2B or the outfielders, and obviously they’re not impressed with the bullpen.

          I’d bet on the M’s pen being better than 19th. Dipoto always finds reclamation projects and guys who get it done. If the M’s really end up 10th in position players and 6th in rotation, I think that means they make the playoffs. I’m guessing the pen won’t end up lower than 12th or so.

      Stroman is a high character guy with a big mouth. Bauer is a POS but not a criminal. Stroman will get a contract by Opening Day probably only one or two years, at around $20 million per year. Bauer is a toss-up whether he even gets a contract and it won’t be from a team in New York or California. I don’t see Stroman on the Yankees though, that part I agree.

          Oakland should absolutely care about PR up until they start in Las Vegas. They have a lot of money hinging on a smooth move. Signing Bauer will not happen in California or New York. Houston, Texas, Cincinnati or Cleveland would be my bets if anywhere.

    The Mariners MUST find a legit 2nd or 3rd basemen. it is the missing piece right now. One more top arm in the bullpen would be nice as well, but that infield needs to be shored up and if you look at the money created by letting. T. Hernandez,, E. Suarez, M. Gonzales, . E. White, and R. Ray, all go, they should have at least $10-12 million to spend and that is if the budget was not raised. for 2024. I would like to see a trade for Polanco of the Twins perhaps. .

          Polanco isn’t worth any pitcher Ms have rostered. And I like polanco ! So it makes them difficult partners as twins need to acquire something that will impact this current roster. Then after that all their strengths are a lot alike. Twins are pilaf be looking at a random prospect they like ranked somewhere around 15 from Ms who’s not a pitcher

        Polanco is probably worth more than Baseballtradevalue suggests, but the “high upside” arm will be from the low minors.

        Miranda + Polanco + Canterino for Byran Woo might work.

          Luzardo is Miami Marlins. Since Miami already has Luis Arraez, I don’t anticipate they’d be interested at all in Polanco. Brooks Lee could stick at SS and replace Amaya, but Lee slowed down a bunch at AAA in 2023 so his upside over the Marlins prospect might not grab them.

          It’s rare for a competitive team to part with a top end starter so I’d think the Twins would have to really entice the Marlins to give up Luzardo.

          Lees power, walk ratio, and k ratio were all in order in AAA. Only thing that slipped was his batting average and he was 3 years younger than league average.

          If he was drafted by dodgers or Yankees he’d be be a top 5 prospect in all of baseball and he actually should be. He’s worth luzardo all on his own

          @Big whiffa – Brooks Lee is a top 50 prospect pretty universally, but he’s not even the Twins’ universally accepted top prospect. Scouts are mixed on Lee’s ability to stick at SS (he seems good to me), and if Lee was moved off SS, his value would tank.

          Luzardo is basically a younger, cheaper version of Pablo Lopez with a little more potential than Lopez and 3 years of team control. Pitchers of Luzardo’s quality, price and control are rarely moved without a major haul of prospects.

          Brooks Lee is not getting it done.

          What prospect rankings are u looking at ? Bc none of them have came out yet lol. There’s 2 prospects that are clearly better than the rest – holiday and lankford. Everyone else falls into the same grade and Lees floor is at the top of all those players. He is averaging 3 extra base hits a week. That’ll play at any position.

          Miami would be stupid for not trading luzardo for lee as they don’t have any high end quality hitting anywhere in their whole organization. They should be willing to trade Perez for him !

          Do you think the Mariners would trade Hancock and a mid level prospect for Polanco? I would see that as a fair trade that would give Seattle a good 2B bat and give the Twins MLB capable pitching depth.

          @PerfectGame – Hancock’s stock is probably looking awfully weak right now after an uninspiring return season in AA. Plus ending the year on a shoulder sprain with real velocities far lower than his scouting report. Hancock did generate a ton of pop-ups (thanks to the sinker), but the days of Hancock projecting higher than a back end starter are probably in the past.

          That said, Falvey should be chomping at the bit to unload Polanco’s salary.

        The Mariners wanted to change their offensive profile as a team this upcoming season because their offense had the 2nd most strikeouts in the majors last year.

        They traded Kelenic (31.7 SO%), let Teoscar go (31.1 SO%) and traded Suarez (30.8 SO%)

        Morel was a 31 SO% last year and 32.2 the year before. He’s the kinda hitter Seattle is getting rid of.

    Looking at the Ray deal after the dust settled I actually like it from a value perspective for the Mariners. They got better in 2024 and got out of Rays contract I think they did well.

    The problem is every move the Mariners have made this offseason has been financially motivated. They missed the playoffs by a game last year. Have made 1 playoff appearance in the last 20 years and they are treating 2024 as a transition year instead of acting like a legit contender.

      If you listen to what the M’s have repeatedly said going back at least 2 decades now, the primary goal is to keep the franchise in the city. That means that it always lives within its means, and running off the revenues it generates.

      Winning is only a secondary matter. They keep the PR machine going about winning to keep fan interest up and keep the revenue machine going.

      On some level, that’s an admirable goal, but as a fan, that’s not what you want to hear.. The sprawling metropolis of Seattle in 2024 is not the same market that it was in the pre-dotcom days when relocation was a real concern.

      The good news for Mariner fans is that they are keeping their young quality starters and that Ray post injury is unlikely to return to his 2021 form. The bad news is that Haniger also is injured a lot and the Ms might not spend the salary savings.

        Yeah I think getting away from the Ray deal was a good move for them. The Mariners really didn’t save any money. What they did do is use Ray to cover two different needs and that will save them from spending to acquire a pitcher and outfielder. And that’s what concerns me the Mariners moves are all about saving money not always about making the team better.

      Circumstances change.

      When Seattle signed Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to a five-year, $115 million contract in November 2021, Luis Castillo was not on the Mariners. Logan Gilbert was coming off a rookie season with an ERA+ of 88 in 24 starts. George Kirby, Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo had never thrown an MLB pitch.

      The Mariners have at least four years of team control over the highly regarded rotation of Castillo, Kirby, Gilbert, Miller and Woo. The $73 million owed Ray was too expensive as insurance against the almost inevitable attrition in the current rotation.

A 1 yr contract for 18mil with incentives that can reach 24mil and an option for 2 yrs could be his best offer.. He can reach 24mil iff he registers X ammount of innings and how he finishes the season base on numbers..

      Anything below 3.60 is #2
      Anything below 3.90 is #3
      Then you have your back end rotation arms typically in the low 4s.

I do not see Cubs paying Monty unless they pass on Belli. I see Monty get $180 million in this crazy market for starting pitchers. Would rather have Stroman 1 year at $20 million then Monty 8 years at 22.5 million per year. But they are a big market team, they should get a big fish plus Hoskins no doubt about it.

    Jerry has made some very nice moves working within his constraints. The 40-man is in MUCH better shape although the batting lineup is pretty similar quality to last year. Which is to say: not good enough to compete for a World Series. Outfield is no longer a gaping hole, but I’m not gonna call it a better outfield unless Haniger returns to his peak form.. I’m not worried about 2B because I think Cole Young and Ryan Bliss will be pushing for that job out of Spring Training or by May at the latest. Would love to see us replace France with Hoskins, or trade for pitching a superstar 3B like Machado or Arenado to drop in the lineup behind Julio and sign a back-rotation arm like Paxton. Still wish this ownership group would sell the team to someone who cares.

    Mariners this off-season
    Suarez->Urias
    Kelenic->Raley
    Teoscar->Haniger
    Murphy->Garver
    Marco/Ray->Desclafani
    Pretty lateral moves we will see

    Great Wong worked for the Royals for 24 years….during that time they had exactly 4 winning seasons….and no winning seasons in his last 8 years there. How is this going to make us better.?

      Well you wanted Hahn and Williams gone. Sometimes you get what you ask for. The WhiteSox fans are a caricature of CLOWNS. They belong in same class as J.W. Gacy

        Gacy was a Cub fan. Sandberg was his favorite player.

    While the Ray trade wasn’t that bad for Seattle if Haniger and DeSclafani stay healthy, those two are a downgrade from Kelenic and Hernandez, IMHO.

    StroMEn must be thinking about life after baseball if he’s continuing to (unsuccessfully) lobby to be a Yankee. Biggest market, team wants to win, and a pitcher who wants more eyes on him. Land one last big contract, pitch in the park with the brightest lights and build HIS brand in the process.

    Life after baseball, using New York to do it.

      Stroman has 7.6 WAR in past three years and an ERA around three and a half.

      Lance Lynn had 0.0 WAR over past three years and an ERA over 4.10. Lynn is getting guaranteed $11 million from St. Louis. Stroman will get at least that and more likely 1-2 years at $20 million per year. Stroman has a big mouth but he is generous with community service and his Chicago teammates spoke well of him. This suggests he is more mature than he was with Toronto or the Mets and I would not be at all surprised to see him return to the Cubs for exactly the amount – to the penny – that he opted out of.

    I am lost as to why TR has such a high opinion of Teoscar. They called him a “big bat” in the article about the Dodgers signing him. Dude had the 3rd most strikeouts last year, and NEVER hit when the team needed him. NEVER. Slider slider slider, three big stupid swings and he goes and sits down. The only thing that kept his stat line impressive was a decent August. If this guy could hit when it mattered, the Mariners would have won the division by 6 games. I’m so glad Dipoto let him walk.

    This was the there best bang for there buck. This obvious move was kept close to the vest, trading of a pitcher with control didn’t seem like a mariner move, a budget minded one at that, So are they improved? To many intangibles perhaps but there wasn’t going to be a big deal being made. Look at Teo. getting signed by the Dodgers just when you thought they broke the bank simply incredible.

    Its sad to see the Sox org this way.. aspiring to be another org who has lost 100 games recently… I mean WTF. You have to start wondering if this is some prank on fans. Like at some point ‘the Chairman’ will come out and say ‘got you, no, we are not letting some know nothing GM who happened to know my name, to do nothing but hire people from failed orgs and use bargain basement signings to think this team will be better any time soon.
