The Marlins are the only team in MLB that hasn’t signed at least one free agent to a major league contract this offseason. This morning’s minor league pact with Trey Mancini stands as the team’s most notable free-agent pickup to date, and the trade front hasn’t been particularly active either. The Fish acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt from the Guardians for cash and bought low on former top prospect Vidal Brujan and reliever Calvin Faucher in a trade with new president of baseball operations Peter Bendix’s former club, the Rays.
It seems as though some modest activity could at least be on the horizon. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the team is looking into a thin crop of free-agent shortstops and hoping to add someone on a big league deal — ideally a player who could also handle some third base on occasion.
This offseason’s crop of shortstops is the worst in recent years, and one of the better names is already off the board: Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Notably, Jackson adds that the Marlins made an offer to Kiner-Falefa but balked at adding a second guaranteed year. He instead signed with the Blue Jays on a two-year, $15MM contract.
Looking elsewhere on the free agent market, there’s not a lot to be had. Tim Anderson will likely sign a one-year deal in hopes of bouncing back to his previous All-Star form, but he’s coming off a catastrophic 2023 showing in which all of his slash stats checked in south of .300 (.245/.286/.296). Anderson has never played third base in the majors, but he did say a few months back that he’s open to a move to second base if need be. Presumably, that means he’d be similarly open to spending occasional time at third base.
Other options on the market include Amed Rosario and longtime Giants cornerstone Brandon Crawford. Rosario, like Anderson, is seeking a rebound opportunity after he hit .263/.305/.378 last season — his worst production since the shortened 2020 season. That batting line checked in 12% south of league-average, by measure of wRC+, and it’s worth noting that Rosario has also never played third base in the big leagues. But he’s put in over 6000 innings of shortstop work since his debut, in addition to occasional work at second base and all three outfield spots. Presumably, he’d be comfortable moving to the hot corner.
Crawford, 37, is a lifelong Giant and could well be averse to traveling clear across the country to continue his career on a team that is, at best, a Wild Card contender. He’s looking to bounce back from a career-worst .194/.273/.314 performance at the plate last season. Statcast still pegs Crawford as a plus defender at shortstop, while Defensive Runs Saved feels (rather emphatically so) that the opposite is true. Regardless, he’d likely be available on a one-year deal and ought to be capable of handling third base on occasion, given his nearly 14,000 career innings at shortstop.
Veteran infielder Gio Urshela represents one more speculative option, though it’s far from clear any club will give him everyday work at shortstop. He’s been more of a third baseman since establishing himself as a regular, and he’s now coming off a season-ending pelvic fracture sustained last June during his lone season as an Angel. The Halos gave Urshela 71 innings at shortstop last season, but that was the second-highest total at the position in any single season. A full-time role at shortstop is probably a reach, particularly coming off an injury of note.
The market has a handful of other options, but most are generally going to be available on minor league deals. Elvis Andrus, Nick Ahmed, Yu Chang, Adalberto Mondesi and Matt Duffy all know their way around the shortstop position; Chang, Mondesi and Duffy have quite a bit of experience at the hot corner as well (Duffy in particular). All have been below-average hitters more often than not in recent seasons though, and Mondesi has one of the lengthiest injury histories of any active player in the game.
Beyond that, free agency doesn’t have much in the way of shortstop options. A creative trade still seems viable — particularly if the Marlins remain amenable to dealing a controllable starter like Edward Cabrera, Braxton Garrett or Jesus Luzardo. If the plan is to find a short-term option in free agency, however, the options are few and far between.

Call the Orioles get Joey Ortiz for Luzardo make it happen
Superstar Prospect Wander Javier
Delulu
stretch123
Would need a lot more than Ortiz for Luzardo.
Seamaholic
A little. Not much more. Ortiz is a helluva SS prospect, is 100% ready, and has a full six years of control. That’s an excellent get.
Bob Sacamano 310
Lol
cwsOverhaul
The value of 3yrs arb control on Luzardo is crazy high. Ortiz would be a 2nd piece, along with headliner Mayo and a couple lower level pitchers. It would cost quite a bit more than 2yrs of Cease.
O’s wouldn’t trade any prospects sellers would want/need for a decent starter at deadline last year. They are blocking its top 5 and Westburg so far in talks w/WSox. Until that changes, they may as well grab one of the low end FAs like Clevinger or whoever on 1yr with 2ndyr option type deal.
HBan22
The Orioles won’t trade Mayo, but something like Cowser, Ortiz and a couple more middle tier prospects should get it done. The Orioles should pull the trigger on a deal like that, as they are one top of the rotation arm away from being truly elite.
cwsOverhaul
If by middle tier you mean adding Norby and Beavers to above……that may do it.
HBan22
I think that would be an overpay. Norby and Beavers are really good prospects. I’m thinking of guys like Jud Fabian or Hudson Haskin, or maybe even Cade Povich. I would think Cowser, Ortiz, Povich should come close to getting it done.
LordD99
Ortiz turns 26 this season and peaked at the backend of BA’s top 100 at #98 a year ago. He fell off their list for 2024. Their review is he’s a likely major leaguer but perhaps only a utility player on a contending team. By comparison, Luzardo was a top-ten prospect who over the last two seasons has built a case as a top-25 major league pitcher, with room to develop further. Ortiz isn’t a lead piece in a trade for Luzardo, he isn’t even a secondary piece, MAYBE he’s a tertiary piece. Miami would get a haul if they were serious about trading Luzardo. They’d have the right to ask for Holliday, which of course won’t happen, but it would be a more realistic ask than Ortiz.
Ortiz is the type of prospect Baltimore fans recognize has value, but also no likely spot on the team beyond utility, and he’s beginning to age out as a legit back-end prospect. They’ll want to move him for a big piece, but he simply doesn’t carry that type of value.
Sid Bream Speed Demon
That’s so stupid. Ortiz isn’t worth Luzardo.
King Floch
I think Ortiz would absolutely interest the Marlins as part of the deal, but definitely not as the headliner. Assuming Holliday and Basallo are the only 2 truly untouchable prospects in the Orioles system, Mayo and Ortiz probably gets Miami’s attention as a starting point to build out a package for Luzardo. Maybe Fabian if they want a high ceiling OF and a pitcher they find interesting outside of our top 5 pitching prospects. Maybe an 18 year old lottery ticket too. Something like that.

Good article, creepy pic though..

Rotation
Luzardo, Perez, Garrett, Rodgers, Meyer
Definitely seems like a wild card team to me at least on paper. Hopefully some of the younger guys step up this year and put it together. Johnston, Burdick, Brujan, Edwards and Amaya come to mind from the offensive side. Pitching wise, need to hope Meyer and Perez stay healthy and pitch great. Need the same from Rodgers who at one point looked like a sure fire No 2 starter.
If Avi struggles in ST, I say cut him and allow a younger option to take his roster spot. If a true DH isn’t signed, I would love for Johnston to get a shot at 1B and push Bell into the DH role.
Big whiffa
Love it ! Rosario is the fit ! 1 year bounce back contract

The cardinals need to trade for lluzardo need one more guy for their rotation we could trade Alex Burleson and a top prospect for him
ChiWin7
Starts with Tink and Winn…
Rantucky
Burleson, Gorman & Donovan that might do it.

TA would make such a good marlin, wish they would.

I have a lot of grace for most of the White Sox players having down years. Anderson is toast however. Best to stay away from that one
GO1962
Hopefully the Marllins will make their 300 fans happy soon by acquiring a quality shortstop.
Big Smoke

NewMarlinOldBrave
Give Jacob Amaya a good long look at SS. The worse that can happen is good defense at the position. That’s a better option then bottom feeding for marginal SS’s.
iron
I agree with starting Amaya. Berti belongs on the bench and not a full time starter. Use the money anywhere else. Marlins need to upgrade C first.
sdpadsfan11
Braxton Garrett and Jesus Sanchez for Jackson Merrill and Waldron? Thoughts?
Gwynning
We’re giving up waaayyyy too much there, cool your jets brah! Lol
I’d be leery of shipping Merrill for Luzardo straight up. I know you said Braxton, but Luzardo is way better. 3 healthy years (Luzardo’s control) is no given for any pitcher, and Merrill has a very bright future with all control intact. I’m also presuming Merrill wins a job out of ST. Tough one to gauge, but I’d be out on your proposal.
El Niño
I like Braxton Garrett for the padres quite a bit. Maybe Garrett and Jazz (marlins fans will flip like he’s untouchable but he’s a 2 WAR CF at this point) for Merrill plus to equal out value.
Seamaholic
Why would Marlins act like a rebuilding team?
El Niño
Gotta give to get. The new gm is prioritizing a SS, has depth in the OF and pitching.
El Niño
Plus, maybe they *should* rebuild. They’re not catching the braves and Phillies right now.
Gwynning
I could start getting on board with something more like that, Niño.
sdpadsfan11
@Gwynning
According to BTV it’s a fair trade.
stevewpants
Ol mean Jean Segura is just out of baseball at 33 then huh?
HBan22
Unless he’s willing to settle for a minor league deal, then I’d assume so. He was arguably the worst player in all of baseball last season.
vpsd
Cronenworth for Josh Bell. Move Arraez to 1b and the Defense gets a lot better.
HBan22
No way the Marlins would go for that. Cronenworth is signed for the next seven years at $80 million, has barely played shortstop since 2021, and has an OPS of just over .700 the past two seasons combined. He’s not especially young anymore, either.
cpdpoet
A case of old school Jiffy Pop should be able to pry Scotty Jetpax Kingery from the Phillies….?
I love that stuff…
mlbnyyfan
Glyber Torres for Edward Cabrera let’s make a deal!!!!
HBan22
I’d love to see Scott Kingery make a comeback. Maybe a change of scenery and he can still carve out a role as a utility guy. I admit that I thought he was going to be a stud.
cpdpoet
You are far from alone, was hoping they’d release him after last season as his contract was up. Here’s to a second act for him!
Murphy NFLD
The bluejays have Santiago Espinal to trade for a RHH platoon corner OF bat if the fish have any? Jays have IMO a bullpen arm they can trade from the MLB roster aswell
Gwynning
They’d give ya Avisail in a heartbeat; squeeze your scout’s favorite lotto ticket as well and you may have a deal done tomorrow.
HBan22
He might net them Peyton Burdick. That’s probably about it.
User 1404051815
The Marlins have a glut of starting pitchers. The Pirates have a deep pool of middle infielders, especially. Seems like a natural
Seamaholic
12 of the Pirates top 14 prospects, many near MLB ready, are pitchers. That includes the #1 pitching prospect in baseball. People have them all wrong.
User 1404051815
Yep. Skenes, Jones, Solometo and Chandler, among others. Agreed. And 3 guys coming back from serious injuries around mid season. I get it
But one look at the staff right now is problematic. Keller, 2 really iffy guys only DreamGM seems to like, Priester and Ortiz.
I hope at least two of the farmhands are ready this year. I hope Brubaker, Burrows and VV come back at full strength. But they sure have a lot of ifs to start the season
formerlyz
Still refusing to give the young guys a look…it’s almost as though they may have had answers about what they had/have had those guys got those opportunities the last 2 years that they should have got…
Buzzz Killington
Nick Ahmed is great defensively. Should give him a contract.
Gwynning
They already employ Nick Ahmed Jr. a.k.a. Jacob Amaya.
Buzzz Killington
True, but it never hurts to have a cheap stopgap. They also have Nasim Nunez.
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Why does it always seem like when the Marlins are just about to make a push to get competitive, they blow up the team and rebuild? They also change so many people in that office. Too many cooks in the kitchen.
If they get their act together, I really think they could go far.
HBan22
Terrible ownership and unwilling to spend any money. It’s why Jeter left, why Ng ended up departing, and why they won’t be a real contender any time soon. It is frustrating, as they were on the brink of taking that next step for the past couple of years. They still have the pitching, despite losing Alcantara. If they were willing to actually spend on hitting, they could have competed in 2024.
LambchoP
Twins should give them Polanco and Brooks Lee for Luzardo or Garett
Gwynning
Crazy to say, but not enough. The presumable acquisition cost here will stun us.
phenomenalajs
If they want a guy who’s well-liked in the clubhouse, who can move around the infield, and who can have an occasional hot streak at the plate (e.g., September 2022), Eduardo Escobar is available probably for the league minimum.
PutPeteinthehall
If TA is willing to sign for bare minimum with a bonus for over say 300 PA he’s probably the guy with the highest ceiling.
radhippo
Angels should consider Tim Anderson. He can backup all infield spots. Particularly 3rd, Rendon will definitely need brakes when he’s tired or doesn’t feel like playing.
TrumboRedux
“tired or doesn’t feel like playing.”
LMAO!!!!
King Floch
I still like the idea of Joey Ortiz (and maybe a secondary piece) for Trevor Rogers for both teams. The Marlins get their 2024 OD SS and the Orioles get a pitcher with 3 years of control who needs some work but could still be a stud if he can be fixed.
Or, if the Marlins decide they don’t want to trade a starter from their MLB rotation, the ever-underrated Ramon Urias for a couple of prospects and Ortiz can just fill Ramon’s spot in Baltimore.
Reynaldo
Terrible job by management to miss out on IKF.
Moonlight Graham
It’s not uncommon for a star player to have a disastrous season and then bounce back. Bellinger, for instance, was an absolute mess at the plate, but he still landed an $18 million deal. So, I really don’t understand why teams are so hesitant to take a flyer on Tim Anderson, unless there is something physically that is not being publicly discussed. Miami would be a perfect landing spot.
Rosario also has bounce-back capability, though not as much as Anderson.
But if San Diego is dangling one of their pitchers for a shortstop, then Ha-Seong Kim seems like the best target.
Or… What about Jazz Chisholm?
Buzzz Killington
His offenseive numbers always had cause for concern. Contact hitters usually don’t age well and his defense sucks. His personality is the icing on the cake.
LordD99
Maybe the asking price? Maybe his reputation is he’s a bit selfish, and opponents know it, which drove the Donaldson and Ramirez incidents? I don’t mean he’s a bad person, but if he’s a bit high maintenance, his decline might give teams pause. Teams are inclined to put up with that when the player’s hitting .300, not .200.
Anderson also might be looking for a specific situation, such as a role on a contending team, that isn’t materializing.
He’ll get signed eventually.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Marlins looking to fight with the Nationals for a last place finish in the NL East in 2024.
billysbballz
Here’s what I will do for you. The Marlins owe the Yankees for GianCarlo Stanton contract 32 million at the backend. The Miami Fish are looking for a DH. Bring back your hall of fame DH with Yankee money (35 million) which brings his last 4 years down to a more reasonable number. He looks in much better shape. So the trade starts by sending one starter to the Padres for there too as prospect, pitching prospect Thorpe, and Higashioka the former Yankee catcher.
Now turn to the Yankees and acquire Stanton, Torres, and top 10 pitching prospect Warren who is major league ready for another Miami Starter and include Thorpe going back to the Yankees as he’s close to being major league ready.
Now Miami offense is allot better and they can move Arreaz over to first, Torres to second, etc etc.
You may ask why would the Yankees do this? Well they need to get out of Stanton contract and yes this will hurt there offense but bolster the pitching and give them financial room to sign Soto.
dirkbill1958
I don’t see the Feesh giving up two starters
Javia135
The Marlins wouldn’t trade any of their starters straight up for Torres. Do you really think they would trade you a quality starter AND take on the $118 million liability that is Stanton, all in exchange for…Torres? Warren for Thorpe is basically a wash.

I think there is a perfect fit in a potential trade with Toronto. Santiago Espinal would be a great solution and would come at a reasonable price.

Yeah, reasonably priced alright. Almost free. Avisail is looking for a change of scenery. Perhaps there is framework for a deal there.
