Earlier reports suggested that the Yankees were talking with the Marlins about their starting pitching, and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale adds some specifics by writing that New York is interested in left-hander Jesus Luzardo. In addition, the Yankees have also checked in the Guardians about righty Shane Bieber, Nightengale adds.
These two pitchers represent the wide range of options the Bronx Bombers are considering are they seek out rotation help. Luzardo would be a longer-term add, as the 26-year-old is arbitration-controlled through the 2026 season and is only arb-eligible (projected for a $5.9MM salary) for the first time this winter. Bieber is projected to earn $12.2MM in 2024, which is slated to be his final season before free agency. Though Bieber is reportedly open to signing an extension with his new team in the event of a trade, that probably won’t be an option with the Yankees in particular, since New York so rarely breaks its unofficial team rule about offering contract extensions.
Because Cleveland almost always moves its higher-paid players prior to free agency, Bieber has been rumored as a trade candidate for years, and that speculation has been peaking now that he is entering his final year of team control. The Guardians have already dealt one veteran pitcher in Cal Quantrill this offseason, and given the talented by generally inexperienced nature of the rest of Cleveland’s rotation, the Guards could potentially opt to hang onto Bieber to further bolster its own pitching staff. There’s also the fact that Bieber pitched only 128 innings in 2023 due to elbow inflammation, and his numbers were only good (3.80 ERA) rather than the elite form he showed earlier in his career.
As much as Bieber could help the Guardians, however, it seems likely that the team wouldn’t hesitate to move a pitcher who might not be a part of their future in exchange for a longer-term asset. Whether or not the Yankees might match up well with the Guardians is another matter, as New York already dealt away a good chunk of their younger pitching assets in the Juan Soto deal, and the Yankees’ young infield depth might not hold as much appeal to a Cleveland team that already has plenty of young infielders.
Naturally the Bombers aren’t going to have much interest in dealing top minor league talent for just a year of Bieber’s services, yet they could be willing to explore such a move for three years of Luzardo. The left-hander is coming off his first full and healthy season as a starting pitcher, and the results were impressive — Luzardo posted a 3.58 ERA over 178 2/3 innings, with solidly above-average strikeout and walk rates.
As noted by MLBTR’s Nick Deeds earlier today, Oswald Peraza might have a clear appeal to the shortstop-needy Marlins, but it would take more just Peraza to pry Luzardo away from South Florida. It’s fair to assume that any number of teams have at least floated the idea of a Luzardo trade with the Marlins, and a demand of multiple top-100 prospects seems like a reasonable ask for Miami given Luzardo’s age, ability, and three years of control.
Unlike with Bieber and the Guardians, there is no ticking clock on Luzardo’s time in Miami, so president of baseball operations Peter Bendix would probably have to be bowled over by an offer to move the left-hander. The Marlins might well look to move a starter for hitting help, yet any of Edward Cabrera, Trevor Rogers, or even Braxton Garrett could be likelier trade candidates than Luzardo. With Sandy Alcantara missing 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, Luzardo and Eury Perez are lined up as the cornerstones of the talented Miami rotation.

I know it’s what the site is for but I’m getting tired of the rumors that are not really rumors. Everyone seems to have an agenda and it used to be check and double check before reporting. Now it’s get it out first. Being first in today’s world is more important than being accurate. Throw enough crap and some will stick to the bottom of a shoe.

Yankees Interested In My Old Dirty Socks
Yankee Clipper
Me too! Don’t count me out yet, Scott…
TrumboRedux

Yankee Clipper
You got it, Trumbo. My socks go to church too – very holy! Haha
Curly Was The Smart Stooge
You got a pair of whitey tightees to go along with them ol’ dirty socks?
My friend wants to know…heh heh
64' Yanks
Only if they’re in the dumpster.
BadCo
The real question is do they have anything in the minors left to trade for these guys? I’d be seriously surprised
Wrian Washman
Spencer Jones, Roderick Arias, Jasson Dominguez. There’s also pitching depth I’d rather not part with unless it’s for Burnes. Warren, Hampton, Beeter, Schmidt. There’s just enough for one big fish or 2 medium fish before being officially a barren wasteland of a farm.
99CaptainJudge99
Yeah I wouldn’t want to part with Jones or Peraza either, but if the Yankees trade for Lazardo and Cabrera, these will likely be pieces going back to the Marlins. The only way I trade Spencer Jones is if I’m getting Corbin Burnes back in a trade.
CleaverGreene
Lazardo is worth more than Burnes by a lot. Jones is not enough for Lazardo.
JoeBrady
I like Dominguez a lot, but that would be the minimum for three years of Luzardo.
YourDreamGM
Trade for Bieber cheap. Extend him cheap. Teach him the Dodger Vegans Football Slider and watch him take home the CY Young every year.
YankeesBleacherCreature
If he was cheap, he would’ve been traded or extended already.
Cknyc
yankees also interested in juan pablo santiago of the el paso chihuahuas
Joe says...
It’s going to be last year’s left field situation all over again. They are interested in everyone and know they need someone but they’re getting no one.
Yankee Clipper
I hope not, Joe, but you know Cashman loves to play that line where he could get someone, but tries to win the trade.
Luzardo would be a big win, imho.
Joe says...
Luzardo is the guy I’d want as well. I still say Ryu should be the target over any of the FAs though. I love Monty but he isn’t worth what he’s going to get and Ryu will be a short term deal and the Yankees can go into next year and get a better pitcher on the open market.
Yankee Clipper
Joe, I completely forgot about Ryu! He would be an excellent acquisition.
Raysasineppswasplanted
If no Montas then no Monty!!!
slider32
They signed Rodon last year!
99CaptainJudge99
Pass on Bieber who’s close to having a TJ surgery and a pass on Luzardo who will be way too expensive. No thanks.
Joel P
Perhaps a Guardians fan could answer this. What would they want back for Bieber? I understand why they might trade him but it has to be for something they want or need. What exactly would that be?
Bill nd
They need an outfielder with power and controllable.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
Exactly. I’m sure the ask is The Martian, which I’m sure the Yankees don’t want to part with. Hard to see them matching up.
ballhawk
Guardians fan here – they need an outfield bat, the bigger the better. As good as they are at developing pitching, they have really struck out (pun intended) on the offense side of things, Lots of promise in the minors but they always seem to fizzle once they get promoted.
That being said, I like the idea of a 3 way deal. Beiber to NY, Luzardo to CLE, and both CLE and NY send IF prospects to MIA. Cleveland’s prospect would have to be better as they’re getting the better arm, but they have IF talent to burn – they just are reluctant to pull the trigger.
Kaos
I like your thinking on the three-way deal, but the final arbiter will always be Dimestore Dolan’s unwillingness to pay anyone what they are worth. If the federal government could adopt his payroll cutting and dumping tactics to the budget, we could completely wipe out the federal deficit within a year.
Bill nd
Cleveland needs an outfielder, not a pitcher. If that’s offered NYY would just trade for Luzardo.
.
Big whiffa
I can’t possibly come up w a situation where guardians would part ways w Bieber. It’s not like they can’t afford his salary and who possibly is going to replace him in that rotation ? It’s already thin after trading quintrill.
Guardians would need a starter and an outfielder in return for one year of Bieber. It’s just not happening
BrianStrowman9
The Guards will come up with another starter like they always do
swagsuperawesomeepiccoolman123
@Big whiffa you wanna bet on that? im betting a 10000 dollars that they will trade him. They always do that with their pitchers and its not logical to say that you “cant come up with a situation where he’s traded.” Multiple teams are already talking with the guardians to trade for him and some definitely have what it takes to get him. The Guardians dont need starting pitching, they need an impact bat.
Big whiffa
Bieber
McKenzie
Logan
Bibee
Williams
Who else do they have ? They are going to go into the season w 4 starters. 3 youngsters and McKenzie coming off a lost season ? I don’t think so. They are going to try to compete next season
cmessick2080
The Yankees need to stop talking about doing something and actually do it.
Yankee Clipper
True. Cashman’s greatest trait is talking about doing stuff.
StudWinfield
You mean something like trade for Jaun Soto?
Yankee Clipper
He did do a good job with that trade – I’m not saying the Yankees won that trade, but he realized we had to give up good players to get Soto and did it. Very happy with Cashman on that trade.
AmericanRedneck
They should pivot and sign Trevor Bauer, doesn’t cost any prospects and he’s arguably better than any of the guys they’ve been linked to on the trade market or any of the FA’s remaining on the market. Oh, wait, that’s right, collusion won’t allow it as MLB is apparently quietly forbidding any team to do so.
Joel P
I think Bauer is playing in MLB come April. But New York? No I doubt that.
TrumboRedux
Joel, who is your guess? Who signs him?
Joe says...
Let’s put aside the more recent events on why not to sign Bauer. Here’s a better reason for the Yankees to not sign him. Him and Cole don’t get along. I know Cole has said all the right things but he’s also the guy who was all out of sorts two years ago when the opening day festivities ran about 15 minutes too long. It would be foolish to get Bauer if there’s any chance it bothers Cole. Besides, Bauer’s best numbers were put up when he was using spider tack. He isn’t worth the risk.
roiste
Trevor Bauer has multiple sexual assault allegations in addition to Lindsey Hill’s. He was a constant source of drama even before all that happened. It’s not “collusion,” owners have correctly concluded that the headache is not worth it.
Joel P
If those allegations were legit why has he never been charged with a crime?
Again I think someone will sign him. The Padres best player is a proven cheater who lied about it after he got caught and slept with that same girl that accused Bauer of all this. Seems like if they can handle Tatis they could handle Bauer. But not New York.
roiste
Civil lawsuits are filed without criminal charges all the time. There is a completely separate case from the one filed by Hill ongoing against Bauer. I’m not commenting on if it’s legit, but if I was an owner I’m not bringing that sideshow into my organization until it was actually closed. Which this second case is not.
And sexual assault is so much worse than PED use it doesn’t even merit comparison.
Joel P
Civil lawsuits don’t matter criminal ones do. And of its ongoing what exactly is taking so long? You don’t know what you are talking about.
It’s not sexual assault when the person being assaulted brags about it to their friend and says she’s going to take his money.
roiste
You’re talking about the first case. Not the second one. Which nobody knows anything about. Which is why no MLB team is gonna give Bauer millions of dollars while it’s ongoing, even if his fanboys don’t like it.
It’s crazy for you to say I don’t know what I’m talking about and then ask why a lawsuit is taking a long time. Everything in the courts takes forever.
Joel P
What second case are YOU talking about? Be specific.
Joel P
So cheating is cool but “being a distraction” is cause for banishment. Got it.
Joeydonuts
You are clueless.
There have been four women who have come forward, one filed for a pfa before the gold digger went public.
And that’s just what’s been made public.
Mlb spent a lot of money investigating this, and no doubt teams have access to the report.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Joel P In his recent FOX interview, Bauer mentioned he has another civil case pending.
Joel P
What difference would that make? A civil matter and a criminal one are two very very different things.
Joel P
You say gold digger as if there is just one…….
No criminal charges. Thats what matters.
Yes teams have a right to be concerned. The question is whether they have a right to blackmail him. If 30 organizations independently decide not to sign him that’s legal. If 2 teams or more colluded to agree not to sign him that’s illegal.
Did MLB.com share that recent interview with Bauer on their website? I bet they didn’t. That’s getting borderline illegal right there.
Joel P
Blackball not blackmail
Joeydonuts
Lmao.
Why would two teams need to collude to not sign anyone? You forgot to say.
Look up what the word blackmail means. Another thing you’re clueless about
.
News flash-absence of criminal charges don’t matter when it comes to who teams sign.
Not sharing someone’s interview= borderline illegal.
Was that intentionally obtuse, or did you mean it?
Joel P
If two teams agree not to sign him it equals collusion. That’s what I said.
It was autocorrected blackball not blackmail. See the follow up comment.
News flash. There are rules about employment and who you can or can’t hire.
JoeBrady
roiste2 hours ago
You’re talking about the first case. Not the second one.
=======================
Without the first case, there is no second case.
Joeydonuts
Thats beyond idiotic
Do teams agree not to sign players a lot?
Mets and Yankees need to know who the other isn’t signing because… Just because!!!!
What are the rules compelling a business to hire someone? You forgot to say.
Is it the same rule forcing publishers to print someone’s interview?
CleaverGreene
He went on FOX?? what am I saying ? of course he did.
ballhawk
prediction: Oakland signs him. I mean, why not? What do they have to lose – fans???
Joeydonuts
Incel night will sell out
Raysasineppswasplanted
Could you show us how many of those you mentioned are true?
stymeedone
One Complaint against him is still in process.
The Ghost of Bobby Bonilla
That is exactly what I do if I’m Cashman. Bauer only costs $$$, not prospects and his ceiling is as high or higher than anybody they can trade for. And he likely is super motivated.
Yankee Clipper
I would be surprised if Bauer made an MLB appearance this season. I would be far less surprised if, once his other case(s) are closed, he pitched for an MLB team.
Imho, teams are very reluctant to sign him out of fear someone else will come forward and they may have to eat the money, or continue to pay him to go away like the LAD did.
I am curious about the following: say he is pitching for an MLB team in the future and someone else does come forward for a similar incident during the same time frame as the other accusations, would they be able to re-suspend him for the same violations because there’s a “new” incident? If that answer is yes, I could see that would make a drastic impact on teams’ decisions to offer a contract.
The wording in the policy is somewhat vague as it applies to that suspension, leading me to believe it may be under the sole purview of Manfred to determine if he would be re-suspended, which is certainly not in Trevor Bauer’s favor.
Joel P
Why would someone come forward with accusations at this point? And good gosh accusations that aren’t legit are nonsense that has to be taken into consideration. The laws are always evolving and they are going to change to punish girls like her in the future.
He was never charged with a crime. Frankly the 192 game or whatever it was suspension is nonsense to begin with. But to not let him back in at this point if they don’t he’s going to sue. And he will have a case.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, I understand, and I’m not making the case they would be legitimate. I’m just surmising that perhaps the possibility has crossed teams’ minds. People will do almost anything for money, obviously.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he pitches again in MLB, but it’ll be awhile. I believe he also really offended Manfred, and the last person to do that (Ken Rosenthal) was fired from his job. Doesn’t mean it’s right, but I’m also not suggesting Manfred would do the right thing.
Joel P
This feels like a Kaepernick situation to me. MLB has a monopoly on professional baseball in America blackballing someone isn’t right and probably illegal in a court of law.
I think Manfred better see to it teams are giving him an honest look or he’s going to be in court explaining this to a judge.
RickEO
Yankees dont have the system to get these high quality pitchers
C Yards Jeff
Maybe send Stanton and cash … it’d have to be a lot of cash … to Cleveland for Bieber and maybe a couple low level type prospects.
Joe says...
Stanton would never agree to that. For him its LA or bust. All we can do is hope Friedman loses his mind and takes Stanton off the Yankees hands.
A'sfaninLondonUK
@Joe – Stanton has 10 & 5 rights so he could veto any deal. I can’t see anyone taken him even if 90% of the balance was paid off by NYY.
Joe says...
Not only 10/5 rights, he has a full no trade. That’s why I said LA or bust. I’m sure he’d go to the Dodgers. I just wish the Dodgers wanted him.
layventsky
That sounds like the sort of move the Angels would make. And by the Angels, I mean Arte Moreno.
The real Oscar Gamble
JOE, You’re right it’s LA or bust. I brought up maybe stanton for Rendon. It’s LA, the money is close and maybe a change of scenery helps them both. Some of the guys said Rendon is done and tbh stanton can run into 25 hr by accident. I think it’s just time to get used to the fact he ain’t going no where. Maybe the cut him loose a year early, didn’t they do that with Rodriguez?
Joe says...
I think they cut ARod loose with 2 years left on his contract but I’m not 100% certain on that.
Crash_n_burn
Artie would send Rendon to nyy for Stanton any day

Yankees should feel guilty for taking home grown players from Cleveland. Baseball isn’t fair
Yanks2
The Dodgers’ top players aren’t homegrown either. Betts, Freeman, Ohtani
Joel P
Luzardo grew up in Florida he’s a local guy. They already lost Alcantara for 2024. I just don’t see them trading him.
towinagain
Padres are lame.
Whiskey and leather balls
They adding future prospects to these offers? No way they outbid anyone outside of the astros for anyone. Better open up that always fat checkbook
TrillionaireTeamOperator
I do t think either would be a great pick up. I think both would be serviceable and perfectly fine but nothing that would truly improve the team.
They’re kinda between doing their original teams a favor financially and hoping to win gong double or nothing-these guys have both probably peaked and the Yankees would be paying for past success.
Cole is the rare player who arguably got better once he was on the Yankees. I don’t see that happening with either of these guys.
Not sure what the solution/best fit is, but I don’t think it’s either of them.

Crash_n_burn
Unless it’s one of the Miami youth starters or Peraza for a young starter elsewhere, the Yankees are better off saving the prospects they have left and signing a fa pitcher.
They already traded a bunch in the last 2 deals so a 1/2 year deal for Ryu and the others is the way to go.
Juggy
Believe me. These articles are only speculation the Marlins would never get rid of him. That’s number one especially with Sandy on the shelf. Cleveland is going to want a small Kings Ransom for a shell of a pitcher.

In my opinion, they are better off just throwing money at Montgomery, Snell, or a lower level guy like Ryu. They are thin on the farm at major league ready arms and are not willing to move their top level infielders or outfielders. The Marlins may be seeking less for Cabrera or Rodgers though. In this case, I could see them working out.
With the Guardians, they may be interested in Pereira for the outfield, but he would be a hard ask for 1 year of Beiber.

To make a long story short… The Yankees want everybody’s best starter without giving up much to make it happen. If that won’t work, they want to buy every top free agent starter they can.
Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman
Exactly what do the Yankees think they have to obtain Bieber or even Luzardo? Only thing I can think of is Jasson Dominguez.
Salzilla
I’d love Luzardo and I’m not sure he’s as expensive as one might think. He had a pretty darn good season last year, but his mlb record so far has been a tad checkered both with injury and ineffectiveness. There’s a reason he’s already been traded twice. High upside, but…
I think Peraza plus a couple more lower minor leaguers could work, but not sure how Miami values him after last season.
MARLIN POWER 18
@Salzilla
Marlins do not like Peraza. For someone of Luzardo’s caliber, they’re looking for a major upgrade – especially with the bat. Any knowledgeable Fish fan living in South Florida knows that the new front office will not tolerate “glove-first” or “defense-only” guys in the lineup. Scoring more runs this year takes precedence, and that means we’re looking for complete players who are also polished hitters. Peraza looks lost at the plate. So does Volpe, for that matter. I may be wrong, but I just don’t think NY has the assets MIA is looking for. I like Xavier Edwards, one of our SS candidates, better than I like Peraza. His glove work is decent, he can play multiple positions, and he’s an excellent high-average, consistent contact hitter.
Salzilla
Luzardo’s caliber being what exactly? Because again do we know fully he’s found himself or does he revert back? And can he avoid the injury bug? I’d have question marks there as an opposing GM. Also when you see a specific guy’s name, it also means the possibility of him getting traded is real. And where has it been said they do not like Peraza? He may look as lost at the plate as Luzardo looked on the mound his first few years, but he also has a very good prospect pedigree, too. He’s had a solid on base profile in the minors. Him + two others isn’t that far fetched. It’s actually a solid get.
Also, Volpe went 20/20 in his rookie season, all told, I think that’s pretty decent! That may be a good one-one comp, but personally I wouldn’t make that trade. I’d always keep the young position player over the SP.
UKPhil
@ Salzilla
It is said by some that you can see who a pitcher is going to be around the 500 innings pitched mark. Luzardo is approaching that.
Getting through a season, start to finish makes repeating more likely than before.
There are no guarantees in baseball, but getting through a season is always a major step forward for a young pitcher..
Miami may have a lot of Starting pitching depth, but there are questions about the durability of many of them after Luzardo and Garrett. If teams are not willing to pay a high price, then the Marlins should just try to get to the Allstar break in contention, and see what’s on offer.
MARLIN POWER 18
@Salzilla
The Twins, Reds, and Padres have all expressed an interest in Luzardo. Any transaction involving Jesus would cost these teams their top SS prospect – Brooks Lee, Noelvi Marte, or Jackson Merrill, respectively. They’re all young, controllable, major-league ready, and can all flat-out hit. They’re each more highly regarded than either Volpe or Peraza. I realize that nothing in baseball is 100% guaranteed. Everything is a judgment call. Volpe and Peraza may yet evolve into fine everyday players. But for right now, I just don’t see it.
Salzilla
Not that I’d give him up, but like I said above, Volpe ultimately went 20/20 in his rookie year. That’s more than enough for a rookie season in MLB. Of the rest we can only talk about Marte and he only had less than a quarter of a season there. I don’t see the Reds moving him, though, they do need a SP there.
Peraza wasn’t used as a starter so that was always going to hinder him, but he’s got enough intrigue to package up with a couple others. Again, talking about a package deal here. Not 1-1.
MARLIN POWER 18
Whatever transpires, it will be very interesting to see what happens down the road. Because, in truth, only the Shadow knows – and he’s not telling!

If Pereira is all it’ll take to get Bieber then Cashman needs to get it done already. Cmon make this happen. And of the ask for Luzardo has to include Spencer Jones then move on. He along with Domingues should be untouchable.
