Angels Interested In Gio Urshela

By Darragh McDonald | February 7, 2024 at 3:15pm CDT

The Yankees and Mets have shown interest in free agent infielder Gio Urshela, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, though the Angels and Marlins “have made better offers” to this point. The New York clubs were connected to Urshela at the end of last year, while the Marlins were connected to him yesterday. This is the first time that the Angels, for whom Urshela played in 2023, have been reported to be interested in a reunion.

The Halos acquired Urshela from the Twins in November of 2022, with Urshela one year away from free agency, sending prospect Alejandro Hidalgo the other way. Urshela had hit .290/.336/.463 over the previous four seasons between the Twins and Yankees, leading to a wRC+ of 119. That bat was enticing, as was his defense. With Anthony Rendon’s mounting injury history, Urshela gave the club some insurance at third base, while the club also hoped he could fill in at other positions as well.

Unfortunately, the acquisition didn’t work out too well for the Angels. Urshela bounced around to all four infield positions but got into just 62 games on the year before suffering a pelvic fracture in June. He didn’t require surgery but it ended his season nonetheless. Before that injury, he hit just two home runs and his slash line was down to .299/.329/.374, translating to a 92 wRC+.

Despite that disappointing campaign, the reported interest suggests that the club has some confidence in Urshela bouncing back to health and improving his performance. Once again, there may not be a simple everyday job available to him, but putting him back into a multi-positional role would make sense.

The Halos are set to have youngsters Zach Neto and Nolan Schanuel at shortstop and first base, respectively. Schanuel held his own in his brief major league debut but is still a risk with just 51 professional games under his belt, having just been drafted last summer. Neto also debuted last year and performed well defensively, but with subpar offense. Third base remains an annual question, with Rendon having suffered through another injury-marred season in 2023.

Brandon Drury and Luis Rengifo are on hand to cover second base and one of these other positions, but bolstering the group overall by bringing Urshela back would improve the overall outlook. The Angels have often been hobbled by injuries or underperformance exposing a lack of depth in recent years. Urshela’s presence would give them some cover for another Rendon injury or any sophomore slump from Neto or Schanuel, or another unforeseen development.

The Halos should have plenty of spending room, looking at their budget at Roster Resource. They are currently slated for a budget of $173MM and a competitive balance tax figure of $188MM. Last year, their payroll finished at $215MM and their CBT just under the $233MM line. Those figures were set to be even higher before they fell out of contention and started taking cost-cutting measures as the season was winding down.

Assuming they are willing to get back near those levels again in 2024, there’s lots of things they could do. At the start of the offseason, MLBTR predicted Urshela for a two-year deal worth $20MM. He may not be able to get that high since it has turned out to be a fairly tepid market for position players and he is still lingering on the market in February. But with Spring Training starting shortly and clubs reportedly having offers out to the infielder, he may be coming off the board soon.

They’re a team that could surprise for sure but doesnt seem super likely without somehting like that, but those kinds of moves would likely push them closer to the pack for the wildcard.

That said boy do they feel like a team that could seriously regret not jumpstarting a retool this offseason. Maybe not. A healthy season from Trout would go along way both toward contention and toward his trade value.

As usual, someone needs to point out that Trout can’t be traded. He has a full no trade clause. He has to give his permission for a trade to any team.

There is mountains of evidence of Trout and management going on record stating Trout is not going to be traded.

Agree on Montgomery, but for a team with a long list of really bad long-term contracts, Bellinger at full market cost and years is just asking for more trouble.

Other than Weaver, the Angels have a horrible track record with Boras clients.

And the article says Urshelas time with the Angels was disappointing. I disagree. Yes he got hurt, but up until then, the dude was clutch. The baseball media loves to crap on the Angels but they were a good team for good stretches of last season. Urshela was def a part of those good runs.

I beg to differ YBC, everyone is untitled to change there mind. Thou most of us Angels fans dislike Arte not selling, but it happens. For instance, many of people have changed there mind on selling there house, and pulled it off the market, for many of reasons. Same $hit, but different tax bracket.

Selling a house is a much less involved process than selling a multi-billion dollar organization which requires more than a simple appraiser, broker, and lawyer. You’re right that anyone is entitled to change their minds but Moreno is in the entertainment business.

NO, this is a terrible take.

Artes lack of focus during the most important offseason in franchise history means unless we win some championships soon, he will be remembered as a consistent cancer.

The way the Sho stuff was handled has scarred a generation of fans from feeling comfortable believing in this team long after that mustached narcissists is bribing the worms below for land deals.

I truly believe given the constant hope paired with the failure up against the backdrop that we had the two b2b generational talents (as everyone reminds us cruelly) makes being an angel fan the most painful of any team in America

Moreno had offers up to six billion for the franchise. He took the club off the market because he thought he could make a fortune on developing the land around the Big A.
The curious part is that his children don’t have any interest in the franchise. He lost his chance to develop the property when the City Councilman he was close to was named indicted for several fraud charges.
Now if he decides to sell the sale price will drop with the loss of Ohtani and an aging Mike Trout.
An owner who lets the best player on the planet walk for a draft pick in the 70s has no vision.

The land deal collapsed was quite awhile BEFORE Arte took the team off the market. The value of the club doesn’t depend on the roster as debt does. Some potential owners may not want to take on $ 700M contract. I never heard him getting close to $6B. I know the owner of the NBA Warriors was involved. The Angels are worth $2.7B. No one is paying double.

Almost every team every year is good for stretches.

They haven’t made the playoffs in 9 years and haven’t even finished a season at .500 in 8 years.

During the 9 year playoff drought, they finished a combined 181 games behind the division winner, or an average of 20 games back every year for 9 years.

All of this futility while having an owner who is able to spend decent money and a roster that has at times included the best and sometimes also second best player in the majors.

The Angels have earned the crap they get.

Their record says they’ve earned any bad coverage they’ve gotten.

I was also unaware that we were legally bound to only post comments in articles that had our ‘home’ team name in it.

Plenty of non-Jays fans have posted comments in Jays related articles, both positively and critically. I’m good with that. It’s called having opinions and carrying on conversations.

Keep in mind this Halo run of eating a sh:t sandwich every year has coincided with the Astros rise from the ashes. I get that. I also get that Arte is more concerned with investing in a company to sell Trout bobbleheads than he is about *properly* investing in on-field talent.

Trust me, I’ve been very critical of the Angels and esp those milking the system (Rendon).

Nevin and his staff were not the right people to lead that banged up team the last 2 months of the season. It was a monumental fall. That included both Trout and Shohei going down.

I *do think – contrary to the numbers – Urshela stepped in admirably when Rendon went down with a stubbed toe.

Fregosi and Grich have a combine 8 HOF votes.

Grich, highest WAR of any second baseman not in the Hall and is eligible.

Fregosi highest WAR. For any shortstop.

Belinger? His statcast numbers are pathetic. That would be an imbecilic move.

Play the players that are under contract for the next three years. Find out who can be relied upon in 2025. Then supplement the roster when actually adding a couple player might help.

Angels want Snell and maybe Montgomery is a fallback. But Once Boras wakes up to the market for Snell is at 6-years and $180M the Angels will pounce. Urshella is better than kiki Rodriguez. It would be a good add. I do believe there is a good chance they also sign Adam Duvall to play the OF and DH. They could flip their surplus outfielders for assets.

Snell fine, but he’s not going to magically turn this 2024 team into a contender.

I’d rather save the money and apply it to Burnes in 2025.

If Moniak and Adell suck, then Soto.

There is no one at third,so fans better hope Rendon has stuff in the tank or Rengifo can take to the position like Figgins did. Ironically a bad middle infielder who could play third.

I agree that Snell won’t transform this team, but he’s a building block to a dominating rotation. There’s no reason they can’t sign Snell, whom I believe will age well over the next five years– and go get Burnes next year. It’s baseball, you have to have a building plan. You can’t build it all out in one season– look at what the Rangers did. I’d make a two-year deal for Woodruff right now. If they have those two as their cornerstone and Silseth and Detmers evolve to their potential– they could have championship rotation.

Unlike most of these other players, I’m not opposed to signing Snell.

But when the Angels signed Pleasac and promised him a shot to compete, signing Snell would make that a lie.

Not that I care, but typically when the Angels sign these players, they keep their promises. So I don’t know if Snell is in the cards.

carl/halo – As we all know, there is no historical evidence to suggest that Moreno would ever approve signing a pitcher for a 6 year contract. The evidence shows the exact opposite. Moreno will not do what he needs to do to build a pitching staff.

I do see your point about letting the current young players play and see what they got.

I still say that they currently still need a veteran pitcher to be their #1.

Considering that every team’s season can change due to injury or player performance, If a team can get into the playoffs. There’s always the possibility that that team can get hot and make a run deep into the playoffs.

The Angels can be that team if their roster has enough depth and health. They have a lot of young players that are entering their prime years. They have to play, and if there is a surprise player or two that can get some trade value. The GM can trade from a position of strength to fill a position of need

6 years $180 million is probably what he’ll get. That’s less than what Boras wanted, but more than the Yankees offered.

Boras drives a hard bargain and he might be hedging his bets that there probably will be a major injury to a prominent pitcher on a contending team that will get desperate and drive up the price!

Moniak’s defense in center rated superbly last year. 5 DRS is about a third of a season.

I fully expect his bat to regress but if he can put up that level of defense and keep Trout healthy in RF and DH, that would be nice.

Moniak swings at 50 percent of the pitches out of the strike zone.

          He prevented 2 runs.

Trout prevented 4 runs. Trout is the Angels CF. If you want to DH him a couple times a week. Fine.

I doubt Moniak is the Answer, but like Adell, play him until all doubt is removed.

By the way, Adell hits the ball harder, strikes out less, walks more, chases less, is faster, has a better arm and is younger.

The Fielding Bible has Moniak at 5 DRS in CF.

The point of Urshela is we don’t have a starting third baseman on the roster.

The Fielding Bible has lost a lot of its luster. I don’t even look at it anymore.

Fielding stats have come a long way in the last ten years. And they’ll go much further in the next ten years.

I feel like bunch of people haven’t noticed that Trout has rated above average at CF the last few years. I am also questioning the fact that playing center is more prone to injuries than left or right. I don’t know what the stats say, but it seems to me less in CF. There are less things to worry about (angled walls and tarps) Those seem to me to be how he could get hurt, He could get less tired, but is this really a net rise in INJURIES??

A right fielder starts and stops a lot less often than a CF’er. And when the strong safety sized Trout starts and stops that’s a lot of force.

Things like his torn calf a few years ago might be a factor. Soft tissue injuries.

The hamate bone was just bad luck.

HalosHeavenJJ- A CF may have more stops and starts due to the extra coverage, but less abrupt stops like coming to a wall and more unusual angles. That is the kind of movements that can increase injury also running into or tripping over things. Another thing is the wall in center is padded. To me the only way to lower the risk of injury is at DH. Maybe someone has stats on injuries by position, but it sure seems to me that you would not want to move him when he rates above average, and he would be also playing an unfamiliar position and would probably need extra wear and tear practicing an unfamiliar position.

Trout has never been injured while on defense in CF that I can remember. His “spinal condition” doesn’t seem to be a thing and was probably way over-hyped to get clicks. Even if it was a thing, playing CF isn’t any more stressful than playing the corners. Trout is fine in center field and should stay there.

Actually, not true. He rolled over on his wrist against Texas. It cost him the MVP and the Angels a playoff spot.

He didn’t miss much time, but had the worst month of his career.

He’s made adjustments. But It could have happened anywhere. I understand why people want to keep him healthy, I don’t understand why they think RF or LF is safer than center? Salmon got hurt in RF. Upton got hurt in LF. Ward got hurt in RF. Adel got hurt in LF.

Trout is familiar with CF, he’s probably safer there.

yes, I was shocked when I added the last 3 seasons to find it was 148 GP. The ABs were 531, which is one semi-normal season worth. Halos fans would probably be content with 120 GP avg. With their rebuilt bullpen, all that’s missing from contending seems to be signing Snell or Montgomery. If they signed both and brought back Urshela, that’s a pretty decent team. Might not win the West but definitely could contend for the top WC.

It would be stupid to cut Rendon.

The only way the Angels have a chance to Compete in 2024 is if Trout finishes high in the MVP vote and Rendon gets MVP votes.

I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but it might.

Figure out if Rendon has anything left, then do something in 2025 if he doesn’t.

What’s the point of cutting him now. Well, there is no baseball point in cutting him now.

It’s not stupid to cut Rendon if you think he’s a cancer and takes up a valuable roster spot. I see a very unmotivated player who no longer hits for power due to his leg issues. He can’t play third for 140 games– it will never happen. Is his bat viable at DH? I would allow him to play in Spring Training and see how it goes? But if he’s anemic and has an attitude– cut him. He’s averaged 50 games played a year for four years as he enters his 5th uneventful season– and now he’s 34. It ain’t gonna get better with age. It was a bad sign, but we will survive. Don’t compound the problem if he can’t play effectively.

Have you seen any of Rendon’s recent interviews? He’s anything but passionate. Not one word about his desire to win, contribute, or right the ship. Doesn’t speak about letting the team or fans down and his determination to get back to himself. Nothing. He’s 34 and its been 5-years since he played a full season and was productive. Wishing he was the Rendon of old doesn’t make it so. If he flops again this season he’s gone. He’s taking up a valuable roster spot. Hopefully he rebounds and maybe finds himself as a DH– he can’t physically stay on the field at third. Washington declaring players get with the program and produce or their gone was directed at Rendon. They released Pujols when Pujols was much more productive than Rendon.

Seems to me Gios playing time/ABs will be similarly constrained with all 3 of NYY, NYM and LAA. – Even considering injuries.

He might just choose the largest overrall $ and a preference for a team that has good chance for playoffs, geographic location and possibly an opt out after year 1 OR multiple incentives.

You would think TOR, SF would have interest

I think he could get the most playing time with MIA

Right now all there backup infielders are rookies who barely hit last year. Dj will need time off on thirds and who knows how Rizzo bounces back. If they have no other moves, this should be a no brainer. If they don’t get him, I think they will get one of the top free agents left if they are going all in this year!

I used to love Gio and didn’t understand why he wasn’t a long term solution for the Yankees, but then I took a close look at his peripheral numbers and his WAR and it’s clear that he’s only okay. For teams that can afford to go with someone closer to elite, there’s no reason to commit to him long term- but for any team looking for a stop gap, he’s basically the best temporary option there is.

    I think 2 years/$25M straight up or 1 year/$12.5M guaranteed w/ a $2.5M buyout on a 2 year/$26M club option or a 3 years/$41.25M deal with opt outs and a 4th year option at $12M etc. would all make sense.

Basically he’s likely an $11M-$15M a year value overall and he seems unlikely to be interested in or to generate interest in a team signing him to more than 1-2 years until he would re-enter the open market and see if he’s re-established himself completely or if he’s continued to have the kind of issues that make a long term market value signing unlikely.

Were he maintaining at the top of his game and healthy, he would likely be in line for like 4 years/$70M to 5 years/$100M.

I believe your numbers are a little to high for Gio, just like MLBtr’s early projection. Coming off a concerning injury and a wRC+ of just 92. A 1 year prove it deal looks accurate. I gotta think if some team throws him a $10m dollar bone, he’ll snatch it.

Trout is being traded, even though he has a full no trade clause and has never once speculated a desire to leave the Angels.
Rendon is going to be cut and the Angels are going to eat the balance of that HUGE contract
Get rid of Rengifo, for a bag of balls.
No one likes Moniak, no one likes Adell

It seems as if the stadium will be empty because no one likes the Angels. But hey…I will still be there enjoying the game. A big middle finger up to all you haters!

1972, I think the Angel fans that come here are not haters, they are fans, which is short for fanatic which by definition makes them irrational and reactionary.

I’m speaking about Angel fans, not trolls.

I want to see who these guys are. This is the first time in years there is no pressure to win. I hope the Angels take advantage of that for a change rather than just toss another band-aide on a cut that need stitches.

Was joking about trading rengifo for a bag of balls, but he’s not good. If you’re saying to not sign urshela because you want to see rengifo in the field you’re not watching the games Washington is not a magician and you can’t fix decision making. Question who is the backup shortstop or third baseman not named rengifo. It makes sense we can keep going on about it, but it’s not holding anyone back. It’s a extra bat.

I agree, BUT, there is a point when it becomes idiotic. The Trout to Philly banter has become very old and very idiotic. Letting Rendon go and eating that huge contract is well, idiotic.

I too am looking forward to seeing what they have. Let the kids play.

I have not seen enough of Rengifo to know he can’t play third. If anyone would have told me Figgins could play third, I would have called them crazy.

The Angels obviously see “something” in Rengifo, or they would have traded or dropped him by now.

I really want to see what Washington can do with him.

He’s demonstrated an ability to go on tears. He’s also demonstrated an ability to be horrible.

Defensively, he’s demonstrated an ability to cause all Angel fans to hold their breath.

I have and you can’t morph him into a defensive wizard, he has been in the same role without the defense and a average bat. Figgins was a pinch runner for a year in a half maybe less he didn’t have much playing time rengifo has. Urshela might get a two year deal, and he can replace drury next year. the angels need to trade the expiring contracts to restock the farm. This whole debate is regarding him blocking players and he’s not. The

Just to add. I hope Rendon plays 150 games and bats third.

Schanuel, Trout and Rendon batting at the top of the order is going to cause nightmares for pitchers. With their high OBPs and their propensity to work the count, our number four and five hitters, whoever they are, are going to think they died and went to heaven.

I think we’ll learn enough in 2024 to have optimism in 2025… provided they don’t screw it up with band-aide signings that won’t help this team win in 2025.

Urshela is a piece of gum, to plug up the dam to compensate from Rendon sinking the ship.

No one is asking Rengifo to be a defensive wizard. It’s not his hands that cause the problem, it’s his feet.

Now about Adell. People throw around the word lottery ticket so much it’s lost meaning. Adell is the true lottery ticket. If he cashes, this team will completely turn around. That’s why I want the Angels to give him every chance this year. If he doesn’t cash, get rid of him.

I can get behind your logic on this one. If they Angels get him on a reasonable contract that is tradable, it make a lot of sense.

Gio was playing gear for the Angels last year. Has he really fully recovered? (I don’t know about Hip Injuries, but old people I have known with injuries never fully recover)

I want to find out about O’Hoppe, Schanuel, Rengifo, Neto, Rendon, Ward, Trout, Moniak, Adell, Sandoval, Canning, Detmers and Stevenson in 2024 and see where they fit, if they fit in, in 2025.

The Angels can’t do that giving innings and AB, to players that have no chance being in the mix in 2025.

If the Angels miraculously compete in 2024, then most of those questions were answered in the affirmative and next off-season will be fun because the Angels will know exactly who to replace.

Regardless, next off-season the Angels will have gotten enough answers to have a plan.

I don’t know why more people don’t see this.

Urshela wouldn’t block any of those players, maybe less time for rengifo and sending schanuel down he didn’t look bad at all, but you shouldn’t be playing someone a month after getting drafted. Ward is most likely heading to dl for a bit with them signing hicks. Neto had back issues and Rendon will be out sooner than later they need a third baseman. I agree with letting the starting pitching sink or swim

Sure he would. He would block innings from Rengifo at third.

Schanuel hit for no power, doesn’t run or plays defense well. Will he get on base enough to be useful? Can he hit LH? 600 PAs will tell us a lot.

And you know that about Rendon? You know how Neto’s back will play out? You know about Ward?

I don’t. And I don’t think anyone being honest with themselves believes they know either.

Rengifo being blocked at 3B, SS, RF and LF is great. His defense at those positions were atrocious. Not that he is great at 2B. Besides, without O guy hitting behind, his offense will drop considerably.

Exactly, urshela/ rengifo platoon wouldn’t be bad plus we have the dh that you can rotate guys in. I wouldn’t mind rengifo’s playing time getting reduced didn’t it always seem like he caught fire when the game was over.

I see it too Halo11Fan and totally agree. But having good infield depth by adding Gio would be a good move to prepare for the inevitable injuries to come. And I like Gio. I remember him being pretty clutch.
If the Angels aren’t able to evaluate every single infielder because the starters stay healthy and play well, that is a great thing for the team but probably a bit unfortunate for Rengifo, who I like also. He totally deserves a chance and with our history of injuries, he’ll get it. And Gio will have lots of playing time too. We’ll be glad we acquired him.

adding urshela would be added depth, and it’s essentially the same as last year, when they actually added depth and the tsunami of injuries came.
I don’t know anything about ward but it would make sense for hicks to be the 4th for a month or two aka the Brett Phillips, and cut your loss.

I believe something is going on otherwise it was a weird signing. The same thing happened with drury, urshela, and lamb when he had Walsh how did that turn out.
Rendon isn’t playing past 40 games

Don’t know about neto, but who’s the backup 3b/ shortstop, and I think rengifo is a turd with his defense and decision making.

Schanuel can play in the minors.

Im not Nostradamus Im just going off last year when we had more depth and it came back to bite us in butt so why bring back urshela that played well until he got hurt

I like this site but I’m so sick of these “X team
Interested in Y Player” articles when in reality only the Dodgers have the balls to go buy players, and of course they buy everyone and no else seems to care. Don’t report anything until a signing is official!

Sign Gio, Solor, get an ACE, Snell or Montgomery would be solid signings for the next 4 years. We might actually be competitive if we could get a solid DH which you could patloon Trout, Solo, Mickey. I know we got Hicks and we will probably need him at some point but we need a bad that Solor would give us.

I think Gio Urshella is a very low risk signing. I also think that he brings a LOT of value. Last year he excelled as a part time utility player and he excelled when he was an everyday starter for a stretch. Given Rendon’s history, this is the insurance policy that makes sense.
