Mets, Jon Duplantier Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | February 29, 2024 at 7:51pm CDT

The Mets have agreed to a minor league pact with Jon Duplantier, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (X link). A former highly-regarded pitching prospect, Duplantier does not receive an invite to MLB camp with New York.

Arizona drafted the right-hander in the third round in 2016. He ranked as perhaps the organization’s most highly-touted pitching prospect for a couple seasons thereafter. Duplantier posted strong strikeout and walk numbers in the low minors, but injury issues clouded his future as a starter. He got to the big leagues in 2019, working out of the bullpen for 12 of his 15 appearances. Duplantier turned in a 4.42 ERA over 36 2/3 innings as a rookie.

The D-Backs kept him on optional assignment for all of 2020. He returned to the big leagues for four starts in 2021. He was tagged for 19 runs in 13 frames and sent back to Triple-A. Duplantier suffered a season-ending lat strain in the minors, leading to his release. While he circled back to the Snakes on a minor league deal, he hasn’t gotten back to the majors since then.

Duplantier spent 2022 in Triple-A with the Dodgers, where he posted a 4.80 ERA across 93 2/3 frames in a swing capacity. He caught on with the Phillies last winter but spent most of the first half on the minor league injured list. Aside from three rehab appearances in High-A, he didn’t pitch before being released in June. The Mets will give him another look as likely long relief depth at Triple-A Syracuse.

This man is built like a brick shithouse. It’s hard to watch him pitch and not start dreaming.

6′-4, 230 lbs isn’t bad for an MLB pitcher. Or an NFL linebacker.

      Solid #2 in AAA, right?

Develop a soon-to-be 30 year old? He must be an Aaron Heilman type of “prospect”…or going to break Heilman’s record for oldest prospect ever!

Stearns continues to load up on high strikeouts/high walk type pitchers that have tons of “potential”.

Solid #2’s maybe. Depends on fibre intake. But not a number 2 starter.

Interesting, I wonder why he isn’t in the majors, his ERA in 2019 is lower than some other pitchers making millions per year
Like Lance Lynn and Patrick Corbin and Dylan Cease

I remember his relative Phil Plantier R.I.P who was a power hitting lefty hitter nfor the Red Sox some time ago. Oh wait, he’s not related to Phil Plantier. And Phil Plantier has not passed away.. so yeah.

Do you remember his cousin Plantier Fasciitis? Foot injuries kept him from being a success.

“From the plantation,” really. Could be descended from plantation owners, carpenters, slaves, farmers, cooks, foremen, or of course, gardeners.

      Bonne journée, nouveau poney.

I like him better than Tonkin. Hes easily better than Drew Smith. The bullpen is looking decent. I just wish the Mets signed Hader in the off season. We lack a true closer. Diaz isn’t going to be the same, atleast for this year. We have a bunch of 6th inning guys and a true 8th inning guy in Diaz. Much better bullpen than last year. I’m hoping the pen (if its 8 guys) are a mix of Diaz, Fujinami, Ottavino, Bickford, Lopez, Raley, Duplantier, and Tonkin. Not a big fan of that lefty they signed (forgot his name), the one thats supposed to get righties out mainly. I might be missing someone in there such as a long man but I have zero faith in Megill (as a reliever), Luchessi, and Butto. Wouldn’t mind them giving Lavender a chance over Tonkin. I actually have liked Junior Santos’s stuff, wouldn’t be surprised if they called him up this year. The starting pitching though is looking horrendous. Outside of injured Senga and Manaea, I have no faith in this rotation. Quintana is a 5th starter at best. Sevy is going to get hurt. Houser is mediocre (I think he got injured as well). This seems like its going to be a long season, especially with this dunce in Mendoza at the helm

It’s too bad. His numbers from 2014-2018 were extraordinary.

But since 2019 he hasn’t been able to throw the ball over the plate.
If that’s injury related it’s hard to see how the ‘pitching lab’ will fix him. A mechanical workaround, somehow?

He can’t keep the ball in the park either, though.
It’s not that it’s hard to see the path, it’s hard even to see a pitcher.
The Dodgers had him in 2022 and they saw enough, and let Farmer Jon walk.

Sigh. Well, good for him. He caught on with someone, postponing by however much his career as a Division III college pitching coach.
    Best of luck,

What the heck—maybe he’ll thrive in his new role as the Mets #1.
