Corey Kluber announced last Thursday that he was wrapping up a playing career that spanned parts of 13 seasons in the big leagues. The two-time Cy Young winner might not be out of baseball for long.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters this evening that the team has had a “brief conversation” with Kluber about a special advisor position (relayed by Mark Didtler of The Associated Press). Newsday’s Erik Boland first reported the talks (on X) this morning.
Kluber spent the 2021 season in pinstripes. He inked an $11MM free agent pact over the 2020-21 offseason. Kluber started 16 games for the Yankees, pitching to a 3.83 ERA across 80 innings. He twirled the 12th no-hitter in franchise history that May. A shoulder strain cost him a good chunk of the second half, but he was productive when able to take the mound. He clearly impressed the front office and coaching staff with his work habits to lay the foundation for a potential post-playing role.
It’s unclear precisely what that would involve, although it’s likely Kluber would be part of instructional work in Spring Training. Boland notes that the three-time All-Star was at the team’s spring complex in Tampa earlier in the week.

Corey Kluber got the Yankees Juan Soto.
Yankee Clipper
Rumor has it that Kluber got Travis Kelce Taylor Swift….
DonOsbourne
Ugh! Come on Clip! If I never hear another word about Travis and Taylor, I’ll be quite happy. I’m sure I speak for others.
Yankee Clipper
Haha! You speak for me too actually…. I can’t stand them so much I just muted myself.
Paleobros
The good news about both of them regardless of anything is football is over and it’s proper baseball time. Cheers, all! No matter your team or love or hate right now. This is always a happy time:)

(Pouring a little out for all the Angels fans. Keep you heads up!)

Kubert will advise on what goes through a starting pitcher’s mind when one chokes in the playoffs
Braves_saints_celts
Good for kluber, it sucks that his performance declined due to injuries and other things, but he was always a great baseball guy and if you love the game, you’ll always want to be a paRt of the game whether you’re playing or not. Gotta start somewhere. Maybe a few years down the line we will see him as a manager or front office guy. But if it tops out as a pitching coach, I’m sure he will be content with that, still enjoying the game, and passing his pitching knowledge on to the current and future players.
DonOsbourne
I think Kluber would make a great pitching coach. Such a cerebral approach to pitching.
Yankee Clipper
As part of his special advice, could he tell Hal that Cashman and Boone need to go away?
CravenMoorehead
Boone makes me miss Joe Girardi.
Yankee Clipper
Me too brother.
CravenMoorehead
I miss Girardi in post game press conferences saying “It’s not what you want”
His ejections were awesome too, especially the one when that coward Dempster hit A-Rod and the Chase Headley ejection with ump Laz Diaz.
Yankee Clipper
Yeah, some of those were classic
CravenMoorehead
Girardi went straight military drill instructor on them home plate umps and it was glorious

Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Honestly, I think they just hired Boone as a puppet replacement for Girardi based on his 2003 postseason. Yankees always try to glorify their players
Yanks2
Do you think there’s a chance they’ll ever rehire Girardi? I can’t see why they would retain Boone first and foremost
DonOsbourne
In all seriousness, I wish the Cardinals had hired Girardi as their bench coach. They could use his experience and intensity. Players would respect his hard-ass approach more than they do Marmol’s.
YankeesBleacherCreature
GM Omar Minaya, Skipper Kluber, and bench coach Nick Swisher.
DonOsbourne
Why Minaya? He’s been around a long time, but he hasn’t really stood out as a GM.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Just making stuff up. He’s still an advisor of Cashman’s now. And Boone and Swisher are good friends.
DonOsbourne
I love the idea of Swish as a bench coach. But if I’m the Yankees, I’m going go after someone on the cutting edge of the sport and make them an offer they can’t refuse. Like Friedman in LA, not Zaidi in SF.
In other words, they should offer John Mozeliak money he can’t turn down. LOL.
Rsox
Minaya knew how to spend money badly, that’s about all he accomplished as a GM
CravenMoorehead
Good for him. Unfortunate that he isn’t discussing working with Cleveland though.
Eighty Raw
Cleveland’s minor league complex is in AZ, and Cleveland is in Ohio. Kluber lives in Massachusetts, grew up in Florida (before moving to TX in middle school), went to college in Florida, and trained in Florida.
Michael Chaney
What’s your point?
JackStrawb
Kluber from 2014-2018 was even better than Jacob deGrom at his 2015-2019 full season peak.
Both were absolutely dominant, totaling identical 151 ERA+, but with Kluber throwing 130 more innings in those five seasons. If he’d been able to pitch those five seasons again, he might have been that rare starter in the Hall with fewer than 2500 innings.
If he knows how to teach… wow.
Ronk325
Kluber taught Mike King how to throw his slider in 2021 while a member of the staff. If he’s hired I imagine it will be to teach the slider throughout the organization
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
Good for him. One Yankee I can actually approve of
CravenMoorehead
What about Boggs 🙂
Angry Disgruntled Sox Fan
I suppose I approve of Boggs, but I started watching the game much later. I did like Johnny Damon too
CravenMoorehead
One of my favorite players of all time was drafted by the Red Sox (Jeff Bagwell)
Just imagine his numbers at Fenway and playing in the AL East at the time if they didn’t trade him to Houston
Rsox
Even worse is to imagine the fact that a future Hall of Famer was once blocked by Scott Cooper on an organizational depth chart…

Oh. Hey.

cmessick2080
I can definitely see him eventually becoming a pitching coach or some other type of coach to help a team.
thickiedon
Big surprise

Anything to not go home.
Paleobros
I’m just saying, but for NYY;
Mattingly manager
Maddon bench coach
Is that too weird? Wait yeah, it probably is.
Rsox
I think under those conditions Mattingly probably doesn’t take the job
