Jackson Chourio To Make Brewers’ Opening Day Roster

By Anthony Franco | March 18, 2024 at 8:43pm CDT

The Brewers will carry top outfield prospect Jackson Chourio on their Opening Day roster, reports Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. He is already on the 40-man roster after signing an eight-year extension over the offseason.

Chourio, who was born in March 2004, will very likely be the youngest player in the majors. It’s nevertheless not all that surprising that he’s breaking camp after signing an $82MM extension in December. As shown on MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, that’s by far the largest guarantee for a player who had yet to make his MLB debut. Chourio only has six games of Triple-A experience but turned in above-average numbers in the Double-A Southern League a season ago.

The right-handed hitter put together a .280/.336/.467 slash with 22 home runs and 43 steals over 559 plate appearances. That came against much older competition in a league where testing of the pre-tacked baseball led to increased break on pitches and proved a challenge for hitters. Chourio fared better in the second half after the league reverted to the traditional baseball, including a scorching .388/.447/.718 showing in July.

That firmly established him among the sport’s top handful of minor league talents. Chourio ranked second or third on Top 100 lists from Baseball America, FanGraphs, ESPN, The Athletic and MLB Pipeline this offseason. He’s a potential franchise center fielder with a rare combination of power and athleticism.

To the extent there’s risk with Chourio, it’s that he has shown an aggressive plate approach. He walked at a modest 7.3% clip in Double-A, although that’s hardly an overwhelming concern given his youth. Chourio kept his strikeouts to a solid 18.4% rate and showcased his physical gifts.

In 13 games this spring, he’s hitting .283/.313/.348. He has three doubles, no homers, and a 10:2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. They’re not overwhelming numbers, but it has been an impressive enough performance to reaffirm to the front office that he’s ready for an aggressive major league assignment. There’d be little reason to call him up if the club weren’t confident he can hold down the everyday center field job.

The Venezuela native will be at the center of a talented outfield at American Family Field. Christian Yelich should see the bulk of his time in left field with sporadic work at designated hitter. Former first-round pick Garrett Mitchell could slide to right field, where Milwaukee could also turn to Joey Wiemer or Sal Frelick. Their stockpile of outfield talent was enough that the Brewers have considered moving Frelick to third base, although the acquisition of Joey Ortiz in the Corbin Burnes trade gives them the flexibility to keep the Boston College product on the outfield grass if they like.

With a pair of club options tacked onto the end of his eight-year guarantee, Milwaukee already controls Chourio well beyond his six-year service window. The Brewers could still benefit from the Prospect Promotion Incentive if he performs well enough to merit award consideration.

Assuming Milwaukee keeps him in the majors for a full service year, Chourio would earn the Brewers an extra draft pick at the end of the first round if he wins Rookie of the Year or finishes in the top three in MVP balloting within his first three seasons. That’s certainly not an easy task. He faces an uphill battle in a Rookie of the Year race where Yoshinobu Yamamoto stands as the favorite and a top-three MVP finish is a tough ask of even the sport’s elite players.

If I were him and signed that extension that’d be the last thing I’d do. Never understand why players like Tatis and Cano did PEDs when they were locked up for years.

Because Tatis wasn’t trying to use PEDs, he used a garbage cream that hardly has any impact on performance and muscle gain

Merrill was a league average hitter in AA last year. SD is rushing him up like they did Abrams and he was awful that season.

I dunno. That lack of hustle on the ball hit right at him earlier today channelled memories of lackluster play from another ballplayer, namely bj upton.

Would imagine potential voters don’t care for laziness, just like most fans.

        Mehr. Hustle is overrated.

Note: that is NOT the same as saying it’s not important

But two players who both put up equal wRC+ are equal hitters. No matter how much more one hustles.

I’m fact, the one who hustles less is probably slightly more valuable. When they stop at first instead of hustling to second, they only get credit for a single on their wRC+, but any runner on first gets the benefit of a ball hit like a double.

          ==========================
The way I see it is that we need to hustle when hustling is important. Manny got a bad rep for not hustling, but I’ve seen him hustle when it made a difference.

And when Papi was hitting the end, when he’d hit a sharp one-hopper to 2nd, it would’ve been borderline insane for him to run full-out.

It is not lazy. He has only played CF for two years. He is the first one out on the field every day with Quinten Berry learning the position. Obviously a horrible comment that doesn’t know the kid and hasn’t seen seen him working his ass off in spring training. He is cautious out there. Not sure of how quickly to move yet. Horrible comment

Yamamoto could have a 5 WAR season. He’s the huge favorite. Chourio could have a 3 WAR season and it would be a big success. Chourio might be the favorite for players under age 25 though.

Probably will depend on how many 40 man spots they have. And if they put him on now they have to carry him there for the future. So it really depends on how many they THINK they’re going to need this year. Because there is no reason to put him on the 40 man this year.

I see no reason not to carry him. His bat looks good and he can make the plays, and if he can’t beat out a minor league invite then he doesn’t deserve the job.

Both are so young. Turang is an elite defender and run prevention reigns supreme in Milwaukee.. Weimer’s new swing will take a solid season in the minors to see a benefit. Hard to give up on either now. Weimer has a nice, high ceiling. Turang’s bat will improve but he is closer to what his ceiling is than Weimer.

Agreed, at least so far this is nothing to suggest Turang is making a “quantum leap”. Solid defense, but you can get that with any of the other candidates. Some might say he’s got nothing left to prove in AAA, but I think he’d be better off working on his bat down there versus wallowing under pressure in the bigs. Really goes for both of those guys. Vinny Capra and Ollie Dunn are having better at bats – very small sample of course in spring training. Ortiz is playing well enough to take 3rd base, but managers seem to prefer going with a little more experience.

I actually think the bat difference between Turang and, potentially others, is not enough to offset his defense. Turang is truly a GG defender. For a guy not playing his natural position it’s quite incredible. Possible Ortiz is that some day at SS (or somehow Turang moves to his natural spot). His defense is why he will get more play over any other possibility.

I’m picturing Wiemer as platoon with Mitchell. The every day OF will take care of itself in injury. Turang can be optioned. Tyler Black is near ready. Brown who the acquired. Turang will be the best defensive SS if Adames is hurt. Adames will clearly get injured with Milws final year arb injury history. Will need Turang to backup.

Decent move. With Burnes gone and Williams down adding a bit of excitement and hope for the fans can’t hurt. Might as well let the kid tear it up. As long as they don’t sit him, That would be a bad look.

long ways to get to Robin Yount status, but I like the positivity. 5 tool athlete with potential to put up numbers like brauns first few years in the league, let’s just hope he doesn’t make brauns mistakes.
lots of young talent in Milwaukee should be competitive for the next 6-8 years if the pitching develops.

Im no expert on the rules, but im guessing if he struggles for 3 weeks they will (or at least can..) send him down.

It was sort of a forgone conclusion he’d be on the opening day roster after the new contract though. Hard to think MKE would shell out that much coin to a prospect, then keep him in the minors (and who knows, he or his agent may have hinted at a trade demand if they didn’t do all this).

A .795 OPS would be just outside of the top 50 in MLB. Definitely a success.
