Pirates To Sign Eric Lauer To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | March 7, 2024 at 5:15pm CDT

Left-hander Eric Lauer will be heading to the Pirates on a minor league deal, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The CAA Sports client will presumably be invited to major league camp.

Eric Lauer | Benny Sieu-USA TODAY SportsLauer, 29 in June, has been a viable big league starter at times in his career but is coming off a frustrating season. He opened the year in the Brewers’ rotation but struggled. He had a 5.48 earned run average through nine outings when he was placed on the injured list in late May due to an impingement in right, non-throwing shoulder. He was activated off the IL in mid-June but optioned to the minors.

Things didn’t go much better down on the farm as he posted a 6.39 ERA in 56 1/3 innings down there. He was recalled to the big league club for an outing in late September, after the Brewers had already clinched the division. But that turned into a nightmarish outing, as the lefty was tagged for eight earned runs in four innings. He revealed at that time that he had been battling shoulder and elbow issues throughout the year, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

The Brewers could have retained him for 2024 via arbitration, with MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projecting him for a salary of $5.2MM. But Milwaukee outrighted him off the roster in the middle of October, which was effectively an early non-tender.

The Bucs will be hoping that those health issues are behind him and he can return to his previous form. Over 2021 and 2022, Lauer tossed 277 1/3 innings for Milwaukee with a 3.47 ERA, striking out 23.8% of batters while giving out walks at an 8.7% clip. Lauer struggled in the shortened 2020 season but was also effective in the two seasons prior to that. With the Padres in 2018 and 2019, he posted a 4.40 ERA with a 20.6% strikeout rate and 8.4% walk rate.

Lauer’s never shown any kind of ace-level upside but he has a proven ability to be a back-of-the-rotation guy, which could be enough for him to be valuable to the Pirates. Their rotation is currently fronted by Mitch Keller but he is followed by a series of question marks.

Veterans Martín Pérez and Marco Gonzales were acquired this winter to serve as veteran stalwarts but each of them is coming off a frustrating campaign. Pérez struggled enough last year to get bumped out of the Rangers’ rotation and had some good results out of the bullpen but ultimately finished with a 4.98 ERA on the year as a starter. Gonzales required surgery for a nerve issue in his left forearm after logging just 50 innings over 10 starts.

There are two spots available at the back end, with guys like Jared Jones, Roansy Contreras, Quinn Priester, Luis Ortiz, Bailey Falter and Kyle Nicolas in the mix for those roles. Everyone in that group is either fairly limited in terms of experience or struggled badly last year or both. JT Brubaker and Mike Burrows could be options in the second half but both are currently recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Given the general rotation uncertainty behind Keller, and the inevitability of pitcher injuries, there should be an opportunity for Lauer if he can get back into his 2021-2022 form. He averaged around 93 miles per hour with his fastball over 2021 and 2022 but was down to 90.8 mph last year, perhaps lending some credence to the fact that he wasn’t fully healthy and providing an explanation for his poor performance.

If things work out especially well for Lauer this year, he could also be kept around for the 2025 season. His service time count is currently at four years and 111 days, meaning he would come up shy of six years even if he made the team out of camp and spent the whole season on the roster. He is out of options, however, so the Bucs would have to remove him from the 40-man entirely if they want him off the active roster at any point.

Lauer will have to earn a roster spot before any of that becomes a concern, of course, but it’s a good fit for both sides. Starting pitching is an obvious weakness for the Pirates and Lauer could find some runway to launch a bounceback campaign for himself.

Lauer’s career stats compare favorably to Mitch Keller’s in roughly the same number of games. Admittedly, Mitch was far better in 2023, but Lauer was solid in 2022.

The 2021 and 2022 versions were great. The 2023 FIP is 7.4 and the 2023 WHIP is 1.67. Would rather see them turn loose Roansy and Priester. Great signing for depth though.

Roansy had a promising MLB debut in the last 1/3 of a season on a non-competetive team as a two pitch pitcher relying on a good but not great fastball and a solid slider. Then he had a rough follow up season when he lost a little velocity on the fastball and teams had scouting reports on him and stayed off the slider. He will still be 24 years old this entire season with experience both having some success and having struggles in the majors to learn and grow from. He’s probably gonna be a valuable mid-to-back of the rotation guy for a pretty long time in the majors. Expectations were just set higher after his early run of success.

With other internal options, it’s best to put Roansy in the pen or let him find a place elsewhere. The guy is expendable with Jones, Priester, Skenes, Ortiz, Burrows, and others waiting in the wings or vying for the 4th and 5th spot in the rotation. I like to see a 6 man rotation since majority are young with limited pitches. You never use all 8-10 arms in the bullpen. There is always that one guy that sits in uniform while never seeing the mound. So why not use that spot for a 6 man rotation and try to get these guys going. Skenes could benefit the most of a 6 man rotation since he pitched once a week in college.

And more too it, if needed, a 6th man could come in during later innings. But with the ghost man on second after 9 innings, you won’t see that very often of the need to put in one of the 6 starters. Have 8 pen arms, 6 SP, 1 DH, 8 fielders, and 5 backups with 2 able to play outfield and infield. Anything more than 8 pen arms, is overkill

Total headcase and whatever he’s accused of aside, there are other reasons why Bauer isn’t being considered.

The Pirates can retain Lauer next year on arbitration if he’s anywhere decent, that ship sailed for Bauer awhile ago. Lauer is still on the right side of 30 years old, Bauer is not. Lauer has never had an issue with keeping his mouth shut, Bauer seems to enjoy saying inflammatory things whenever he gets the chance.

Looking back on Trevors history the head case thing seems to be over blown and probably has a lot to do with the OCD and the apparent inability to keep thoughts to himself.

If teams would accept him for who he is I think it would be fine… as long as he doesn’t break any rules or laws..

some interviews and shows on his media outlets, he seems to have gotten things under control. but you know what you see and what is do not always fit.

Don’t get me wrong. I do think Lauer is an elite signing. I’m just responding to @Stevil that the city of Pittsburgh and their fans were forgiving of Ben and when he did off the field. Why couldn’t MLB and the GM’s be forgiving of Bauer? From the stories that I’ve read Trevor has a propensity for a type of interaction with women, who also like the same thing, that the rest of us don’t like or very uncomfortable with.

Lack of contrition, no noticeable behavior modification? He’s a tough sell without assurance (probably guarantee in his case) that no negative headlines are coming. I honestly don’t think Bauer can help himself and genuinely doesn’t see how anyone could be upset or uncomfortable with his behavior.

Lauer was injured for much of the year last season and tried to pitch through it. A lot of guys develop mechanical issues as they battle soreness, which can affect timing, location, spin — you name it. This is what happened to Lauer last season, IMO.
He’s always been a capable pitcher when he hasn’t been injured.

I’ve been saying all offseason that they needed to sign him. The reward goes beyond him returning to form, he has another arb year left. Even if he’s lights out this year, he probably doesn’t see anything much north of $8 million for 2025 — making him an affordable option for the rotation OR a decent off-season trade chip.

      James,
I had thought the same but have read that they elected not to offer Lauer. Probably some reason that they had for it that fans don’t know. Bad blood for the trade? Maybe Lauers agent made it know he wasn’t interested in a return or whatever.

The take away is that the players do have a day in signings and it isn’t always that a team didn’t try – although here they apparently didn’t.

They do have some step up candidates for sure but subtract Groome (passed thru waivers and assigned to minors) and add Waldron who has looked pretty good, at least in ST.

Avila’s last outing wasn’t sharp. Britto and Waldron look like 4, 5 right now.

It’s youth in Peoria for sure.

He has another year of arb left, it’s amazing to me that he’s lasted this long – I have to think he may have actually chosen Pittsburgh over similar offers (he’s from Elyria, OH, maybe that factored in as well).

He was injured for much of the year last season. If he’s right, he’s a better version of Perez – and would give them flexibility to flip Perez, even if they’re in the WC hunt.

Now, I set that up to ask, how much has this contract situation messed up Blake’s head going into 2024?

I have to wonder if he isn’t set up for going from CY to being ridiculously horrible because of the effect on his psyche.

          Legit concern and possibility.

Not being in camp by this point can’t possibly be doing Snell’s preparation for the season any favors.

And holding out longer might make teams even more wary of signing him, for fear he’ll take over half the season to find his groove again.

Zilla really should have taken the Yankees’ money.

Eric Lauer, if he gets right, is arb-eligible next season, Snell is not. Surprised it took this long for any of the “need pitching now” teams to get Lauer in camp.

My guess is he’s left-handed starting pitcher depth at AAA so that they’re able to deal Bailey falter to somebody. Maybe to the Marlins maybe to the Giants for JD Davis.

I’m not sure where JD Davis would fit on this team. He can’t field and doesn’t have enough power to justify (or live with) the strikeouts. SF might want to do this deal, but I can’t imagine the Pirates do. And the way Falter has looked this spring, why trade when you can just wait for a DFA?

Glad to see Pittsburgh make this deal. Very good move.

Nothing to lose here. He has been a pretty decent pitcher in the past—prior to 2023. If he does bounce back, they will still have him under control through arbitration. AAA to start the year.
