Reds Acquire Santiago Espinal

By Anthony Franco | March 20, 2024 at 6:48pm CDT

The Reds acquired infielder Santiago Espinal from the Blue Jays for minor league righty Chris McElvain, both teams announced. Cincinnati has a full 40-man roster but did not immediately reveal the corresponding move.

Acquiring an infielder a week before Opening Day probably wasn’t what the Reds anticipated entering camp. For most of the offseason, it seemed likelier that Cincinnati’s infield depth would lead them to trade someone away. That was particularly true after they added corner infielder Jeimer Candelario on a three-year free agent pact.

Things have changed rather quickly. Top prospect Noelvi Marte was suspended for 80 games after a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Boldenone. That cleared everyday third base reps for Candelario, who had previously been ticketed for action between both corner spots and designated hitter. Perhaps even more alarming than the Marte suspension was today’s announcement that expected second baseman Matt McLain received an MRI on his injured left shoulder.

The team hasn’t provided a timeline on McLain, but manager David Bell told reporters this evening that he wouldn’t be ready for the start of the season. Bell had rather ominously left open the possibility that McLain could require surgery this morning, although the team hasn’t announced anything on that front. The UCLA product is headed for a second opinion before there’ll be an official timetable.

That the Reds went outside the organization for another infielder wouldn’t seem to point towards them expecting McLain’s return in short order. While they await official word on his injury, they add a quality defender who can serve as a depth piece at any of second base, third base or shortstop.

Espinal, 29, rode a surprisingly strong first half to an All-Star selection in 2022. His overall track record suggests he’s more of a high-end utility player than a regular on a contender, though. Espinal has plus contact skills with below-average power. His career .273/.331/.367 batting line is right around league average, as measured by wRC+, but he’s coming off a down year.

The righty-hitting Espinal turned in a .248/.310/.335 slash with two homers over 254 plate appearances last season. He lost a couple weeks to right hamstring inflammation but otherwise spent the year as a versatile infielder off the bench. Espinal saw most of his action at second and third base. He has graded as an above-average to plus defender at both spots in the eyes of public defensive metrics. He’s capable of playing shortstop but wasn’t asked to do so often in Toronto, where Bo Bichette has been an everyday lineup fixture for three years.

Espinal still has a pair of minor league options, so the Reds can move him to Triple-A Louisville, but they presumably would not have parted with a pitching prospect if they didn’t anticipate him being on the major league roster. He’ll back up Jonathan India, Elly De La Cruz and Candelario while Marte and McLain are out. His acquisition doesn’t bode well for the chances of non-roster invitee Erik González breaking camp. The Reds also had Josh Harrison and Tony Kemp on minor league deals this spring. Both players opted out and returned to free agency after being informed they wouldn’t make the team.

In January, the Jays and Espinal agreed on a $2.725MM salary to avoid an arbitration hearing. That’s a fully guaranteed deal which Cincinnati agreed to absorb. RosterResource calculated their payroll around $102MM before the trade; they’re up to roughly $105MM after the deal. Espinal has a little under four years of major league service. Cincinnati can control him via arbitration for another three seasons.

Toronto offloads a few million dollars from a payroll that had been projected around $236MM. Their luxury tax number sat around $249MM. That’ll also fall by $2.725MM. As second-time tax payors, they owe a 30% fee on spending between $237MM and $257MM. Shedding Espinal’s salary also saves them around $818K in tax commitments.

Moving Espinal clears a path for the out-of-options Ernie Clement to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster. As a contact-oriented righty hitter with infield versatility, he offers a similar profile to Espinal. The Jays feared that Clement would be claimed off waivers if they tried to send him to Triple-A, particularly on the heels of a huge showing this spring.

They’ll add McElvain as a flier to the lower levels of the system. An eighth-round pick out of Vanderbilt in 2022, he worked as a starter between two A-ball levels last season. McElvain pitched to a 3.75 ERA through 96 innings, albeit with a slightly below-average 21.1% strikeout rate and a walk percentage just south of 10%. He was not among Cincinnati’s top 30 prospects at Baseball America and didn’t receive a mention on Keith Law’s analysis of the system for The Athletic.

yeah if they’re trading for a guy then he’s most definitely not coming back for a while. What used to be a promising young baseball team is now ruined by injuries. Hopefully the reds can still be good

If he’s the Reds every day 2b, there will be a lot of Jays’ fans begging the question: “Why the ____ sign IKF when you could have just kept Espy and got much better value for similar production for about 1/3 the price?”
What this does is compound that mistake …returning a lottery chance to offset the stupidity of signing IKF in the first place

Prior to last year, Espinal was also known for a good glove at multiple positions. The Jays just paid 15 mil over 2 years for a guy with a similar profile.

For his career, Espinal has a DRS of plus 6, 3, and 2 at 3b, 2b, and SS respectively.
        He’s a useful glove-first backup/utility with a light bat, like most backup/utility guys.

What? He was actually an All Star in 2022 and has a .273 career average, he has also never hit as bad as .228

Should be a cheap but solid utility pickup for the Reds while their starters heal up, the Jays def. sold low on him because they needed the roster space now.

Lots of times we don’t know a player is on waivers until he’s claimed or he clears. Given the timing I suspect the Jays had already put Espinal on waivers, and the Reds jumped in today and offered a lottery ticket immediately after their injury news.

If he was on waivers the Reds would have just claimed him rather than making a trade. It’s more likely the Jays advertised that he was available and they wanted to dump his money and then they took the best mediocre offer they got.

Because the Reds have lost a good portion of their infield depth over the last two weeks. Marte out for the first half of the season because of a PED suspension, McClain might have to undergo shoulder surgery and miss a large chunk of time, and on top of that, Edwin Arroyo will miss the entire 2024 season.

I see no need for that comment. He didn’t say it was about personality he’s just saying he thinks he’s a good dude. Personality will get you a little extra money now and then. At the extreme end you can have a white sox situation so it’s not absolutely irrelevant in every case. Personality got Culberson MLB pay last year for doing nothing

Your comment is quite memorable. He was, before that, merely a name to many people. Little things make a big difference, especially when you are a public figure. Some good deeds indeed come back to you. As a kid I got a Russ Ortiz autograph and I thought he looked like he hated doing it (honestly it’s understandable to a degree and perhaps he was just tired, etc). But those people remember how you carry yourself.

I wouldn’t count on any meaningful turnaround. His play regressed across the board last year after he bulked up during the prior offseason. He was noticeably slower in the field and his swing became longer and more lethargic compared to past years.

he is slightly bettter defender, only because espinal has regressed there, but worse hitter (and Espinal isn’t a great hitter anyways).

By bWAR they are nearly identical on a per game basis.
By fWAR espinal has already surpassed IKF’s career in half the games.

My point is that they are both not great utility men but Atkins signed IKF to 2/$15M. He already had Espinal so the money was thrown in the garbage. He should have signed an actual 3B, non-tendered Espinal and not signed IKF. Thats already $10M to spend on an MLB 3B. Or just put Ernie there and use the $10M towards
a 4th OF. The IKF signing made zero sense at any point of the off season including now.

I think nearly everyone agrees about that signing but in terms of defensive value it has been speculated that IKF would have a good bit more value if he played third all year. So there may be a bigger gap there than first appears.

Would rather have seen the Jays eat some cash and sent IKF….the problem with the team last year was the lack of hitting. So they traded the better hitter? The Jays FO really are spinning around in a circle in a corner of the (newly renovated) Rogers Centre. It’s not like they’ve improved their hitting so far in spring training…

They have consistently had poor roster construction. Jays fans have blind faith and refuse to look at the historical facts. Jays needed bats. Turner is great except why not use his and IKF’s money for a bat to open the DH slot for Springer (and now Votto).

Why not non-tender Espinal for Clement and use that money for free agents? How come the Jays haven’t been active in minor league deals for SP since there is a depth issue?

Espinal has 2 options. Not like he has to occupy a spot on the active roster. Another depth move by Krall. Although McElvain was a decent pitching prospect, its questionable he would have commanded an sp job in his minor league assignment.

Biggio had a >.400 OBP after the ASB last year. Granted, he hit for just a .361 SLG in that sample of only 150 ABs, but the on-base ability is an outlier skill that Espinal doesn’t happen to possess (as his defensive metrics took a nosedive last season). If Biggio can rediscover even a semblance of his power stroke, he can be an average to above-average regular or strong-side platoon on a contending team, which is the role he’s currently slated for. He’s hit well in a small sample this spring, so ideally he would solidify his roster spot with a hot start.

Biggio is also making $4.2-mil that pushes him toward IKF territory. Cavan has lacked consistency his entire career and despite his OBP, his overall hitting is garbage.
