Blue Jays Notes: Hernandez, Tiedemann, Manoah, Rodriguez

By Mark Polishuk | April 27, 2024 at 9:28am CDT

After Friday’s 12-2 blowout loss to the Dodgers, the Blue Jays now have a 13-14 record over their first 27 games, and (via tiebreaker) sit in last place in the AL East.  While there has been plenty of inconsistency within the pitching staff, Toronto’s most glaring problem has been a lack of offense — the Jays rank 24th of 30 teams in runs (98), and their .197 average with runners in scoring position is the third-worst in the league.

This slow offensive start has only generated more questions (and second-guessing) about the Blue Jays’ offseason approach to upgrading the lineup, notwithstanding the team’s high-profile attempt at signing Shohei Ohtani.  This isn’t to say what the Jays check in with a number of other bats, including a notable former Blue Jay slugger in Teoscar Hernandez.

As Hernandez told Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, the Jays made contact “at the beginning” of the offseason and “said to not forget about them.”  However, later talks didn’t yield much or any progress towards a deal, as “obviously when we exchanged numbers and years and all that stuff, they said they could not go that far.  That was about it.”

Hernandez blossomed into an All-Star over his six seasons in Toronto, hitting .263/.320/.503 with 129 homers in 2419 plate appearances for the Blue Jays from 2017-22.  Despite this production, the Jays dealt Hernandez to the Mariners in November 2022 in exchange for Erik Swanson and pitching prospect Adam Macko.  Hernandez was entering his final year of salary arbitration prior to free agency, plus the Jays felt a need to improve their outfield defense and contact hitting, as Hernandez struck out a lot and didn’t offer much in the way of glovework.

Considering that Swanson pitched well last season and Hernandez hit an underwhelming .258/.305/.435 in Seattle, Toronto’s logic in making the deal seemed sound.  The outfielder’s so-so numbers resulted in what was essentially a “prove it” type of contract in free agency, as Hernandez signed with Los Angeles on a $23.5MM deal (including $8.5MM in deferrals) covering just the 2024 season.  To date, Hernandez has bounced back quite nicely, to the tune of six home runs and a .267/.336/.486 slash line over his first 117 PA in Dodger Blue.

It is understandable why the Blue Jays might have been wary about committing $23.5MM to a hitter coming off such an average season, and all things being equal financially, it is also possible Hernandez might’ve preferred joining a star-studded L.A. lineup rather than return to a team that just traded him only a year earlier.  That said, Hernandez’s April numbers would’ve obviously been a huge help to the Jays’ lineup, and perhaps a more prudent investment than the $18MM in combined salary the team is paying Kevin Kiermaier and Isiah Kiner-Falefa this season.  Kiner-Falefa’s bat has been decent enough but he is one of several comparable infielders on Toronto’s roster, while Kiermaier has contributed next to nothing at the plate and is currently on the injured list dealing with inflammation in his hip flexor.

Ricky Tiedemann is another player on the mend, as the southpaw is on the seven-day injured list at Triple-A Buffalo.  Jays manager John Schneider provided some positive news on Tiedemann’s status Friday, telling MLB.com’s Julia Kreuz and other reporters that Tiedemann is dealing with ulnar nerve inflammation, and not any structural damage to his left elbow.  It isn’t quite clear yet when Tiedemann might be back on the mound for Buffalo, but he should start throwing again within 7-10 days.

Ranked as one of baseball’s top pitching prospects, Tiedemann hasn’t pitched all that much over three pro seasons, with just 130 2/3 total minor league innings under his belt.  That total includes only 44 frames (32 at Double-A) in 2023, as Tiedemann battles biceps and shoulder problems for much of the year.  Heading into this season, Tiedemann also had hamstring and calf issues during Spring Training, then tossed eight innings over three Triple-A starts before his IL placement.

Getting Tiedemann healthy is the Blue Jays’ top priority, and he’ll need to bank some quality innings at Triple-A before garnering consideration for his first big league call-up.  Some amount of extra pressure is perhaps unavoidable for Tiedemann given both the top-100 hype, and his outsized importance on a Jays team lacking in rotation depth.  In the event of an injury within the starting rotation, Paolo Espino might be the next man up by default, as Bowden Francis is on the 15-day IL and Alek Manoah’s status remains in question given his shaky rehab performances.

Yariel Rodriguez has pitched well over his first three career Major League starts, so for now, Rodriguez has solidified his claim to the fifth starter’s job.  As the Athletic’s Kaitlyn McGrath noted earlier this week, however, Rodriguez is on an unspecified innings limit since he didn’t pitch at all in 2023, and it remains to be seen how the Blue Jays might dole out those innings in the right-hander’s rookie season.  Rodriguez could be moved back to the bullpen at some point in order to limit his usage, but that would require someone else to step up for rotation work.

Manoah’s 11.85 ERA over 13 2/3 innings in his four rehab outings is hard to ignore, as even though rehab starts are more about health and figuring things out rather than results, Manoah is still being plagued by control problems and the home run ball.  The Jays placed Manoah on the 15-day injured list to begin the season as the right-hander was bothered by shoulder soreness during Spring Training, and as McGrath observes, the 30-day rehab window ends for Manoah on May 6.  He could be optioned to Triple-A at that point, or potentially become an option for the 26-man roster if he looks better in what should be two more rehab outings.  Manoah is also slated to throw a bullpen session in Toronto this weekend in front of the team’s big league coaching staff.

Seems like a lot of Blue Jay hate, why cant it be that Teoscar and Ohtani just wanted to play for a team they knew would be competitive and could live in SoCal?

Probably either let him walk into free agency or maybe trade him with another change of scenery player nearing the end of his control.

At this point, a long term deal is probably a non-starter, or at least it should be.

What are they gonna do with Vlad when Horwitz gets the call and puts up better numbers and he becomes a negative WAR player? Vlad is over thinking it and needs to just see ball hit ball. That is my opinion anyway. We need Vlad to get his groove back otherwise you might as well blow it up now. You can’t buy your way out of this mess. Or pray the triple AAA bats save the year.

Manoah must have zero confidence at this point. He’d likely give up 5 ER in 3 1/3 IP of independent ball.

His two successful campaigns weren’t littered with luck either- just lots of soft contact and solid K and BB rates. Unfortunately for Toronto and fans, it feels like any sort of Phoenix act needs to happen elsewhere than with the Jays.

Seems like the article should have mentioned Guerrero. He’s getting paid like a star and he’s not performing like one. He’s been good 1 year otherwise he’s a decent 1b nothing special at all. He’s making a huge amount in arbitration.

He needs to be hitting 7th

In past seasons, Bichette and Gurriel struggled and were bumped down the order and hit their way back up. Vladdy struggles for multiple seasons and they move him from 4th to 3rd to 2nd.

They need to stop coddling him. He’s not a little kid. It’s time to stop with the participation trophies for Vlad.

Good post and while I agree with you that its important to hold players accountable, it’s also no surprise to me that Vlad’s best year came the only time he wasn’t asked to carry the offense.

The entire offseason approach of relying on Vlad, Kirk, Manoah to drop 10 lbs and go back to MVP candidates was inherently flawed. While he’s not a kid anymore, he doesn’t deserve to carry everything on his shoulders. Had they added bats to the roster, it would have been much easier to move him to 5th, but what other options do they have?

I’ll give Shapiro a pass because he actually got Rogers to spend on the stadium and roster but everyone else top to bottom needs go. The farm system is bottom 5, they haven’t won a playoff game and the most frustrating thing is that they haven’t pivoted from an extremely flawed approach to building and managing the roster.

At this moment, there a quite a few guys more productive then Vlad.

A better current lineup could be something like this:

2B Biggio lead off (best OBP other then Turner)
          3B Clement (good contact hitter)
          CF Varsho (production Lefty)
          DH Turner (production righty)
          C Jansen (production righty)
          LF Schneider
          RF Springer
          1B Vladdy
          SS Bichette

Vladdy, Bo, and to a lesser extent, Springer have been costing the team runs. When they hit like top of the order bats, they can go back there.

With a team struggling this bad for offense, a meritocracy is the only way to go. There should be no room for ‘reputation’ positions.

Eh like I said I agree with you but Biggio has never had a year offensively as good as Vlad’s 2023, same with Varsho.

I agree with meritocracy and all, but when Biggio, Clement and Varsho are the alternatives, you’re just reshuffling the deck chairs on the titanic.

Jays didn’t go out and fix their offense and now they are paying for it. Vlad is not the 6th best hitter in this lineup, and that’s the problem. Other than sending a message to Vlad… Biggio, clement and Varsho getting more ABs isn’t going to fix the offense.

Ever since the absolutely brutal error in Kansas city, the whole team has kinda cratered. You could hear, see, and feel some of the frustration on that play. I think his act is getting very old, very fast, if you’re going to pump home runs in 9-2 losses and act like you’re all that because you hit the ball in BP hard, you had better back it up with your play, he is not. He’s never struggled with baseball, it’s going to be interesting to see how, when, and if he pulls himself out of this, his behaviour indicates he very immature. Even the whole home run jacket thing, ridiculous, drive runners in, make contact in the right situations etc. that’s baseball, not up there swinging for the fences all the time, and when you finally connect on a hanging breaking ball, you act like a child. It’s embarrassing to watch from my couch, being a teammate… not sure

You know Vladdy’s whole demeanor has been rubbing fans a little raw…he doesn’t look like he is stressing out, busy shooting the bull with every opposing player who stops by first base. Big smiles, even though he can be seen sitting alone on the bench. How many outside hitting gurus have they brought in to talk to him? Including his dad, he probably has too many voices in his head.

If Manoah wanted to make an emphatic statement about his dedication to not only TOR but to his sport and craft, he wouldn’t go to Jenny Craig – he’d marry her. But like any other personal problem you first have to accept and acknowledge you have it and resolve to overcome it. Until he makes some serious adjustments mentally, he’s on a trajectory to be sitting on a barstool in 5 years telling whoever sits next to him how none of this was his fault.

My impression of the BJs is mixed. You have a lot of talent, but poor defense, especially in the infield. Any slight decline will look like a lot in a tough division. You are a good team, when playing up to your potential Even a t your best you might end up in 4th place in a tough division!

“poor defense, especially in the infield.”

      What?

Overall, the Jays have the majors 3rd best defense by DRS.

As for the infield… by DRS:

      +3 Ernie Clement
      +2 Kiner-Falefa
      +1 Biggio
      +1 Bichette
      0 Vlad

      Overall +7 as a group

Using outs above average, they’re infield is:

      +2 Ernie Clement
      +2 Cavan Biggio
      +1 Kiner-Falefa
      -1 Vlad
      -1 Bo

      Overall, +3 as a group

What are you even talking about? Defense is about the only thing they’ve done right this year.

The worst part is that they just fell into the exact same mistakes they did in Cleveland. They did a generally good job rebuilding this team from the ground up and making them competitive. But to just leave glaring holes in the batting order is what has plagued Cleveland from being a true contender for a long time and now looks like where we are going to be stuck.

I doubt Atkins ever gets another leadership role after this.

After the Seattle WC series he over corrected to fix holes and opened up much bigger ones, then after an entire season that pointed to the offense not being good enough, he under corrected. Back to back years he took entirely different approaches and in both years he was wrong.

Time for Click to take over and start a rebuild.

Without AA signing Vlad, a scout pushing hard to draft Bo and spending, this “good job rebuilding” really isn’t all that good when evaluating drafts, minor league development and trades (who and when) compared to the rest of the league.
