Blue Jays Prospect Brandon Barriera Undergoes Season-Ending Elbow Surgery

By Mark Polishuk | April 29, 2024 at 12:50pm CDT

April 29: Barriera underwent a hybrid Tommy John and internal brace procedure, per Nate Heisler of Klutch Baseball on X.

April 27: Brandon Barriera’s 2024 season is over, as TSN’s Scott Mitchell (via X) reports that the Blue Jays pitching prospect will undergo surgery on his left elbow next week.  The type of surgery won’t be known until the procedure is underway and doctors can fully access the damage, so Barriera could be facing a 14-month layoff that comes with Tommy John surgery, or perhaps an internal brace surgery that would allow him to perhaps be ready for Opening Day 2025.

Selected 23rd overall in the 2022 draft, Barriera threw only 20 1/3 innings during the 2023 campaign due to biceps, elbow, and shoulder injuries.  Conditioning problems may have contributed to these health issues, though Keith Law notes that Barriera had “gotten himself in way better shape” heading into spring camp this year.  Between that limited workload and his lone appearance (1 1/3 innings) for A-level Dunedin this season, Barriera has essentially started his pro career with two lost seasons, turning the southpaw from a very promising up-and-coming arm into something of a question mark.

Barriera is still only 20 years old, of course, so there’s plenty of time for him to get on track even if it’ll be a while before he returns to the mound.  Baseball America and MLB Pipeline both ranked Barriera as the fourth-best prospect in Toronto’s farm system, and the second-best pitching prospect in their system after Ricky Tiedemann.

Yea it sucks as a fan. Realistically they should sell off anything they can get value for this deadline to really kick start a rebuild but with the money spent on rogers center the past 2 seasons along with Dunedin being upgraded to apparently the best training center and payroll at record levels thus year and last; ownership surely is banking on attendance being top 10 in the league for the next 2 seasons and a few playoff series aswell

You are correct Murphy. Jays and Shapiro/Atkins will fumble the rebuild a second time. Not good.

They don’t necessarily need a rebuild in the traditional sense, the pitching is top notch and under control for a few more seasons outside of Kikuchi.
They need to trade Vlad if he regains any value, Springer the same and rentals like Kiermaier and Turner and Kikuchi for young already graduated players and closer to the majors prospects. I’d even consider moving Bo if an extension isn’t done by the deadline or at the very least the offseason.

Doing all that is a rebuild, whether you want to call it that or not.

That’s the definition of a rebuild, trade away star players and guys on expiring contracts

It’s really not, replacing free agents and less than a third of your total roster is called an off season

Regardless how you want to defend your take, they need a full rebuild and clean house. Not in that order.

That certainly is disappointing for this super young guy’s career, but he just turned 20, I say pump the brakes on the pessimism in the article…

I did, and they threw in the negative jab at the start, didn’t need to add it altogether.

The author is a Jays fan. I don’t think he was out of bounds. The odds for minor leaguers to be productive big leaguers is slim and even slimmer when they lose their first two years to injury.

Anything is possible but don’t get your hopes up

The “long toss” experiment needs to come to an end. Dr. Griffith perform surgery on my son’s shoulder due to labrum tear. He said that long toss is contributing a rise in shoulder/elbow injuries.

I heard from my sisters uncle that it’s really short toss that’s the problem

My wife and I were at the game when he was injured. He had delivered a pitch, got the ball back from the catcher, grimaced, walked off the rubber, screamed, and ‘Gronk-spiked” the ball into the ground. He then walked off the field into the dugout. I have never seen anything quite like it. We assumed he was hurt by the way he acted, but there were no outward signs of any issues, including that last pitch.

He knew when he threw the last pitch that someone had happened to his elbow. Hope he comes back from it.

Why not. As much as I don’t like the guy, he looked great against MLB talent. Also, other guys have been accused of similar things (Aroldis shooting at his girl for one), and haven’t been out of the league this long.

This is not to defend any of TB’s or other players terrible actions, if anything, I think the punishments need to be more harsh if they are proven to be true.

The Blue Jays are not built to be true contenders, simple as that.

They’re going nowhere and on top of that, they will probably be stupid enough to give Guerrero Jr a new contract, even though he has basically been a mediocre player except for his 1 “standout” season that conveniently happened while the Blue Jays were playing in a glorified little league field in front of very limited numbers of spectators. It has basically been the same season every year except for 2021. Doesn’t even have the discipline to not be fat/gross, despite being paid millions of dollars a year to be an “athlete”. Also 1 of the worst baserunners and fielders in MLB. He’s nothing.
