Cubs reliever Julian Merryweather has been diagnosed with a rib stress fracture in his back, manager Craig Counsell told the team’s beat (relayed by Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune). He’ll be shut down entirely for a month before going for further evaluation.
Merryweather’s absence from game action will last well beyond that initial four-week period. Even if he is cleared to resume baseball activity in a month, he’ll need to build his arm back into game shape. Chicago already placed Merryweather on the 15-day injured list over the weekend. They initially announced the injury as a shoulder strain, but further testing evidently showed it was a back issue. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if he eventually winds up on the 60-day IL.
Injuries have been an unfortunately recurring theme for Merryweather, who has pitched like a quality high-leverage arm when healthy. He didn’t reach the majors with the Blue Jays until he was nearing his 29th birthday, largely because of a 2018 Tommy John procedure. He debuted in 2020 but missed a good chunk of the following season due to a significant oblique strain. A 2022 abdominal strain again led to a notable absence, likely contributing to Toronto’s decision to waive him the following offseason.
The Cubs claimed him, a move which paid off when Merryweather turned in a career-best ’23 campaign. The righty avoided the IL last year and turned in a 3.38 ERA with an excellent 32.3% strikeout percentage across 72 innings. He’d fanned six over 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball this year before going on the shelf.

This poor guy just can’t catch a break
bigdaddyt
I mean he’s still pitching in the bigs making good money. He could very easily have not made it that far given his track record of injuries but the guys got insanely good stuff when healthy

The poor guy breaks down.

I’ve been following him since he was in Cleveland’s minor league system. I’ve always been impressed whenever I’ve seen him pitch. Always felt like a year like 2023 was going to come for him for whatever team showed enough patience for him.

That’s a strange injury. Even Deshaies said he’s never heard of it happening.

Isn’t this the injury Quintana had last year?
Unclemike1525
I’m not sure but I think Quintana’s ribs were broken from the front and were pushing on something? I don’t remember. Merryweather’s ribs were broken from the rear and in his back. I’ve had broken ribs and to the best of my knowledge were broken in the front. I have no idea if I’m right but Deshaies said it so that’s what I’m going by. If somebody knows the difference chime in.

This a huge loss for the Cubs.

Injuries always seem to be the great equalizer in this game, but boy it sure does seem like they’re hitting teams hard and often so far.

Tonight the cubs lost a Heartbreaker. Up 8-0 in the 6th and lost 9-8. They’re bullpen has been a major problem since they had the “3 headed monster of Tepera , Chafin and Kimbrel in 2021. After they had a combined no hitter they lost 12 straight. And that was the beginning of the end for the 2016 championship core. Bitter sweet.
The thing that I dislike most is the cub fans that give up aster 10 games. I’m positive the Brewers fanbase is no different.

Would you mind listing specific names? Or at least provide a percentage of fans that have stated that they have given up? I would prefer to have some evidence behind these types of statements. Thanks and have a nice day!

The Cubs are known as the lovable losers. The fans embrace the name.
The brewers fans are mostly Packer fans. The previous generation stars Yount and Molitor are too far back to be remembered, Braun took steroids and lied to everyone, Prince valued money over loyalty, and current ownership sells off their stud players before free agency so they don’t have to pony up the cash.
Ya both got problems.

@Swinging Wood
Just fans on social media. I’ve seen a handful of them say they’re done with this team after losing the first game of the season to the reigning world series champions. Which isn’t an easy thing to do.

@Druuu
The “lovable losers” moniker went away when they won the pennant in 2016. And even more so when they won the world series.
