Francisco Alvarez Expected To Miss Roughly Eight Weeks After Thumb Surgery

By Anthony Franco | April 23, 2024 at 8:41pm CDT

Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez underwent surgery to repair the UCL tear in his left thumb, the team announced. The club suggested the procedure tends to require eight weeks before a player can return to game action. Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase reported shortly before the team announcement (on X) that the young catcher expected to be back at some point in July.

That’s at the longer end of the timeline which the team provided over the weekend. New York announced on Saturday that Alvarez was going under the knife. At the time, manager Carlos Mendoza loosely floated a recovery timetable in the six-to-eight week range, although he noted the team would have a clearer picture after the surgery.

New York initially placed Alvarez on the 10-day injured list. It’s likely that he’ll be moved to the 60-day IL once the team needs to open a spot on the 40-man roster. It’s a tough loss to the Mets lineup, as Alvarez is one of the team’s better power threats. He hit 25 homers last year as a 21-year-old rookie. He’d only connected on one longball in his first 59 plate appearances this season, hitting .236/.288/.364 over 16 games.

The Mets selected Tomás Nido onto the major league roster after the Alvarez injury. He’ll back up Omar Narváez for the foreseeable future. They’re the only healthy catchers on the 40-man roster. Narváez, who is likely to get the majority of the playing time, has struggled since signing a two-year free agent deal. The veteran hit .211/.283/.297 in 49 games last season. He’s out to a .179/.233/.214 start over his first 10 contests.

Watching that baserunning decision had me shaking my head.

Trying to turn a dribbler automatic out into a double was such a stupid, little league brain decision….

We can “what if” ourselves to death… but just felt that I would’ve been happy with the gift of the throwing error getting me first base — especially if I’m a clydesdale big boy.

Yes. That’s why it was a “little league” double.

But just because it was thrown past 1B, doesn’t mean you need to go for 2nd. Especially if you’re a power-hitting 240 lb Catcher.

You play hard. If he didn’t go for 2B he’d be criticized for lazy playing. So, your premise is absurd.

Moron, *he made it to second base*. The ball was thrown away and he took the extra base, like literally every other player would and should do. It was simply an unlucky slip that caused this injury, not bad baserunning.

The average weight of an MLB player is 210 lbs.

Alvarez is pushing 240 and a catcher – perhaps the most physically demanding field position.

Don’t you think that should factor into a decision as to whether to try for 2nd base on an overthrow?

Other large power hitters (e.g., Yordan Alvarez) have been specifically coached against aggressive baserunning — such as digging out an infield ground ball — in order to limit injury risk.

Don’t you think that applies to Francisco?

But if he stayed at first there’d be complaints about lack of hustle. Damned if ya do damned if ya don’t

As a braves fan I say Alvarez because of his power potential which has already been shown. They will both be good, both are good defensively and offensively but one has more power than the other so I choose him.

This is upsetting but they do have options. If I was the GM, first thing I’d do right now is DFA Narvaez, he cant call a good game nor can he hit. I’d role with Nido and call up Hayden Senger whos regarded as one of the best Triple A defensive catchers. I’d rather have good defensive catchers over ones that can’t hit or defend

I would try to get Francisco Mejia in AAA with MIL.I agree they should try to trade Narvaez.More unproductive $ 8M

I would also try to get Mullins from BAL, Springer from TOR or Arozarena. Short is a wasted roster spot.Bring up OF Trayce Thompson.

I would sign Kyle Lewis for AAA I believe is a FA.
Bring up Vientos soon, mid, late May.

Pitching will regress, offense needs improvement. Hopefully JDMart starts within 10 days but will probably start slow. To guard against injury play him only 4 days a week. He can pinch hit some.

“Hayden Senger whos regarded as one of the best Triple A defensive catchers.”
Will you pulllleeeeez stop making s#t up?! He’s not even a AAA catcher. He’s a AA catcher who has gotten all of nine games in AAA scattered across three different random, occasional promotions over two different seasons.
Yes, he’s regarded as a good defensive catcher. But no one anywhere has bothered to call him “one of the best”, mostly because they rarely bother to write anything about him at all.
You assume, overinterpret, and [over}-extrapolate what his been said to the point of pure fabrication.

great AAA defensive catcher how? by the 1 time he caught someone stealing out of 9 in 8 games at AAA?

Let me guess your eye has told you he is a great catcher. and you watch every AAA game played.

You’d “role [sic] with Nido” who is one of the worst hitting catchers in baseball? Why? You are already paying Narvaez in case this exact scenario happened. Now it has so you stick to the plan.

So you want to call someone up early or shake up a roster via trade, with no leverage, to solve a problem that is temporary?

Which teams do you envision are rushing to deal us a starting catcher btw?

Not a big fan of it but maybe move parada up another level to AAA he is hitting the best out of the catchers in AA and is the most used. He is not a great fielding catcher yet but whoever helped alvarez in the minors last year might be able to help parada improve that part of his game.

Oh, enough with the mindless prospect worship. Parada is still well behind defensively, and he’s not even hitting in double-A. He’s got a .692 OPS, and a worse than average 27.3% K rate. Again, thats in DOUBLE – A
Please tell me were fans get this notion that every kid who gets written up by the overeager NY press simply must sail through the minors in less than two years??!!! Because thats not how it works in real life. Only very small handful of very elite do that, and do it successfully.

and this is why you aren’t an MLB GM. Parada doesn’t need to be on the 40 man anytime soon, and he doesn’t seem MLB ready as we speak, so why waste an option year on him when you have an acceptable tandem in Narvaez and Nido currently on hand?

Mindless prospect worship? Not sure where your Holier than though remark came from. Just keeping it real… Let’s have an adult conversation, not an idiotic response. I think Parada is a rather nice surprise and would have loved to have had given him a chance over narvaez and now, torrens
