Mets Place Drew Smith On 15-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | April 27, 2024 at 12:36pm CDT

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced to reporters (including Newsday’s Tim Healey) that right-hander Drew Smith has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to shoulder inflammation.  Outfielder Starling Marte has also been placed on the bereavement list, so New York has called up both infielder Mark Vientos and right-hander Dedniel Nunez to fill the two open spots on the 26-man.

Since Smith’s MRI didn’t reveal any structural damage, the hope is that the righty can be back in the bullpen after just the minimum 15 days.  The Mets’ relief corps has been a strength for the team this season, and Smith has contributed to the cause with a 2.70 ERA over 10 innings and 10 appearances.  His most recent game was last Tuesday, when he allowed two runs in an inning of work during New York’s 5-1 loss to the Giants.

The solid ERA hides some underlying concerns in Smith’s performance, most notably a hefty 14.9% walk rate.  Smith’s walk rate had already taken a sizeable jump from eight percent in 2022 (when he had a 3.33 ERA) to 11.9% last season, when Smith posted a 4.15 ERA over 56 1/3 frames.  On the plus side, Smith has an excellent 24.1% hard-hit ball rate, helping somewhat mitigate the bad luck of a .345 BABIP.  Smith has reincorporated a cutter into his arsenal this year with good results, though batters are having more success against his primary pitch, a four-seamer.

Marte can’t catch a break in life. Hard to enjoy success and millions when loved ones keep dropping around you.

    Thoughts and prayers.

So the Mets outfield will be Nimmo-Bader-Taylor/Stewartleft to right, with a little but of Wendle in an emergency? And Baty and Vientos platoon at third? ( Yawn….)
Hope JD Martinez can hit well enough to not make it noticeable.

And let me state before the poster who acts like Fujinami’s agent does:
      Shintaro Fujinami. 7 G, 5.1 Inn, 4 H (1 HR, 1 2B) 11 R, 8 ER, 2 HB, 11 BB and 7 K. 2.01 WHIP.
So though you might hate Drew Smith, Fujinami is NOT the answer.

Might do McNeil, Bader, Nimmo. With Wendle at 2B? Then Stewart and Vientos as bench bats? I am assuming Vientos goes back down after Marte comes back in a few days.

Not really concerned. The bereavement leave is only three days. So no real need to hash this out.

“Marte can’t catch a break”…I’m sure millions of people would trade places with a guy(Marte) headed towards $100M in career earnings to play a kid’s game. And the fact of the matter is, we’re all going to die at some point; even our loved ones.

You chose to completely ignore the part where I said what’s the point of all the success and millions when your loved ones are suddenly dropping way too early.
Yes people die, obviously. Not sure how much you care for or love your family but I wouldn’t trade mine for ANYTHING!! That includes millions.

Shallow and phony people don’t know that people lose their families too?

And I’m shallow because I choose family over millions?
Thanks but no thanks to this weird conversation. Have a ball, I won’t respond. In your weird world you win. Congrats

Yes I don’t think hardly any of us would trade 100 million for their wife dying out of no where at a very young age. Your a very shallow person if you think 100 million is that important in life.

Yeah, can anyone explain to me why Vientos is up right now? To do what exactly? JD is here to DH and Baty seems to finally be getting comfortable playing every day at 3rd.

Hopefully to hit some home runs and get the offense going. He can play some corner outfield.

Maybe to give Pete a rest from the field for a few games. Honestly, have no clue.

      A few reasons

The only other position players on the 40 man are Acuna and Ramirez that are probably not ready to make that leap and would waste service time and option years. Anyone else you add would have to dfa someone.

Potentially not lose power in the lineup if you give alonso or baty a day off where Wendle you are guaranteed that loss

Can be optioned down without a dfa transaction as he is optionable

potentially add some pop to the lineup even off the bench

      @ Hurricane Sandy
Vientos is the only position player on the 40-man roster who is even remotely major-league ready. What did you want them to do – leave him in the minors and play a man short??
Baty’s looked comfortable at 3rd, but terrible at the plate. Even his earlier success was a result of more luck than skill. His hard-hit rate, exit velo an barrel rates are all actually worse than last year. His success earlier this season seems to be a result of more luck than skill, as his BABiP was a robust .381 a few weeks ago, and is now down to .310.,

no need to retire you just didnt know the 40 man … hard to keep track especially with this team and all the movement.

Thanks Roll. That statement was more in reference to his game-winning home run the other day. That’ll always shut up smug little commenters like me lol, although my comment was more in the spirit of not understanding where his playing time was going to come from. That question will take care of itself if he hits.
