MLB Likely To Move Sunday Morning Broadcasts Off Peacock

By Anthony Franco | April 11, 2024 at 7:51pm CDT

MLB’s streaming partnership with Peacock appears to have come to an end. The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand reports that MLB is closing in on a deal with an undisclosed platform to take over the Sunday morning broadcasts that had been on Peacock during the 2022-23 campaigns.

“Our initiative with Peacock was a valuable experience with a collaborative partner in our ongoing effort to explore a variety of streaming offerings for our fans as their consumption habits continue to evolve,” an MLB spokesperson told Marchand.

As has been the case for a number of teams’ local broadcasting contracts, MLB’s streaming deal with Peacock apparently hit a snag over rights fees. Marchand reports that NBC, which operates the Peacock streaming service, has paid the league $30MM annually for exclusive rights to 19 Sunday morning games in each of the last two seasons. While NBC expressed interest in retaining those broadcasts, Marchand writes that they sought to renegotiate the fee at a lesser amount.

MLB evidently felt it could secure a better deal with another service. Assuming a new agreement is reached, the Sunday morning games would remain in effect for this season on the new broadcasting platform. Last season, the Peacock-specific games began either shortly before or after noon ET, at least 90 minutes before the rest of that day’s slate.

Since 2022, MLB has also had a streaming partnership with Apple TV+ that affords the platform exclusive rights for two Friday night games each week. That deal, which Marchand writes is valued at $85MM per season, is a seven-year contract that remains in effect.

Youre gonna care a lot when you hear the news. Apple or Amazon is going to take the whole slate like they did the MLS, you heard it here first. It’ll end all blackouts, but it will be almost exclusive to the platform.

      I hope its Apple.

Sooooo stupid that they talk about engaging with new demographic and generating more interest in the sport, while at the same time keeping isolated broadcast platforms and blackouts….

Even if they ran a no blackout, live viewing platform through mlb.tv for all games they would probably make more money.

Hopefully Apple again so I can still say F Apple…No one should spend more for one or two games a year. I have Peacock but like most others only was interested if my team played. Usually then, the game was nearly half over by time I realized the game was already on.

Dewey, I drew the line at Peacock. For the one game a year my team is on there, I get a cup of coffee and listen on radio on Sunday morning. It’s relaxing.

Lord, I had been paying for the WWE before they went to Peacock so I had it already when MLB started on it. I only get the MLB app today because I have T-Mobike and it’s been free. How many apps can one afford? I still have cable and for those who need high speed Internet, the cost of a negotiated combo plan is the way to go. I have so much on my TV plan for free that I can’t lower the price anymore because they would first remove the freebies. My biggest gripe is I wish they would charge more for the Internet and less for cable as my job pays my Wi-Fi cost.

They think theyll make more money if they prop up cable not realizing how many of us would gladly pay MLB not to have to deal with cable again.

What’s crazy to me is that $85m is a lot of $ for Apple to be giving out for only 2 games once a week.. but considering they are doing it year after year, it must serve a purpose either for profit, exposure or both.

It just goes to show you that there’s an insane amount of $ in tv. Attendance and vendor/merchandise revenue is just a drop in the bucket compared to these media deals teams are making now.

Given that they show about 52 games per season it breaks down to a little less than $1.7 million per game. Still high but probably not much higher than production costs on one episode of any of their original series.

I still wouldn’t buy an Apple tv subscription and I’ve heard their broadcasts aren’t even that good

True. Apple and only available on that platform, which who exactly has?

Espn and the motley collection of announcers, none of whom have been worth listening to, excepting Jon miller for decades.

Do understand MLB wants network $$, isn’t a way to make netowrks use.. Say home team announcers, even 1 from each team rather than those who are clueless?

Put at least 1 other game on same time for espn. All fans not those of LAD/NYY/Atl/Bos and want some variety and that apple platform is a joke.

@johnsilver: I enjoyed listening to Joe Morgan on ESPN as well, and I loved Chris Berman’s nickname shtick – John “Tonight let it be” Lowenstein, Ron “Not tonight” Darling, Darryl Strawberry “Shortcake,” Mike “Pepperoni” Piazza, Greg “Matha” Maddux, Rollie “Chicken” Fingers, Todd “Highway to” Helton, Sammy “Say it ain’t” Sosa, Miguel “Tejada they come, Tejada they fall,” Jeff “Brown paper” Bagwell, etc. etc.

Oddibe “Young Again” McDowell, Mike “Enough” Aldrete, and Kurt “What Is That” Manwaring, were some of my favorites.

Berman did a commercial where he was supposedly teaching a class on nicknames. He asks for a nickname for Drew Bledsoe. This guy answers, Drew Bledsoe “Much He Needed A Blood Transfusion”. Wrong said Berman. Then a young woman raises her hand to say there is no nickname for Bledsoe. To which Berman replies, “correct”.

I pay for the one team MLB.tv app to get the Phillies. I live in Columbus, OH. My blackouts are Cleveland, Cincy, Pittsburgh, even when the Phillies are playing them in Philly. It’s dumb to keep me from watching those games, plus any of their games on other streamers. I’m paying to watch them, yet can’t 30+ games a year.

mlb changes the rules, sweeps ohtani scandal under the rug, and encourages pitchers to throw 100 (which eventually causes half the league to go down with TJ), all so they can attract more fans and strike deals with apple tv

so ill just say 1 final thing on the matter.
the interpreter has been stealing since 2018 and gambling since 2021 (or so some article or some reporter or somebody somewhere alleges). over the course of 6 years this dude took $16 million from ohtani without ohtani noticing? i notice if there’s 10 cents missing from my account, but ohtani didnt notice 16 million over the course of YEARS? the bank just accepted that this guy was ohtani? are you f’in kidding? the most famous ball player on earth? there were like 9 different reports in the beginning of this scandal. first the friend gambled. then it was ohtani who sent the $ to help his friend. then ohtani had nothing to do with it. then they said the millions were actually bet on credit. what bookie is going to accept millions in credit from some silly interpreter? and of course, NOTHING was ever bet on baseball. they let the astros walk after they cheated their way to a championship. of course there’s no way on earth is manfred ever going to even slap ohtani on the wrist. not when apple tv and amazon are sending hundreds of millions to mlb for tv rights! people wanna see showtime. they dont wanna see jimmy bumblef8ck.

“How could Ohtani not notice? I would!”

“You think MLB wants to look into it’s star player?”

      “It’s a fed cover up!”

Do any of you have evidence for this conjecture? The first one seems to think that if he would notice so would Ohtani, completely equivocating the two which is ridiculous.

The second one could be used to condemn the MLB in any accusation whether they did it or not. With this way of thinking it is impossible for the MLB not to be guilty.

The third one is not so dissimilar to the second. It’s always the feds and it can’t possibly NOT be the feds whether they did it or not. The Moon landing was fake, the earth is flat and by the way, who the hell pissed in Johnny Utah’s pants anyway?!?! The FEDS!!!

You can’t think rationally like this.

@data shark. I never said Tappai handled the money. But, since you’re bringing up something I didn’t say, something that isn’t being thought of is the fact that he had access to Ohtani’s money. Additionally, you shouldn’t make assumptions on what people do when they have that much money because I doubt you or I have experience with that sort of thing.

@its happening. You say I believe in myths but I can point to evidence. You are making assumptions on what you think Ohtani would do because you THINK you would do it this way or that way if it was you. Some people are extremely involved in their finances and some aren’t. Stop putting yourself at the center of every issue. Just because you would do it a certain way doesn’t mean others do. You aren’t the center of the universe. It’s $16 million over several years, not just $16 million.

It was a fight between Rod Allen and Mario Imperba who were the Fox Sports (or Bally…not sure which at the time) Detroit announcers for the Tigers at the time. They didn’t REALLY try to kill each other, but it was a big enough fight that it got them both fired.

Can we just consolidate as opposed to more fragmentation of games? MLB, you’re turning off your casual audiences.

I don’t have problem with mlb making money at all, sell your product. But those games started at 9am out west, makes it hard to catch every game, and I’m a baseball diehard. This isn’t college football with most games on one day. I listened to them on the radio, I might add it seems like a disadvantage for west coast teams to have 1st pitch at 9am

As an east coaster it always sucks when my team plays out west. Games starting at 10pm is Terrible! My son can’t watch 20+ games a year because of that. I’d love 9am games though.

The fact that it’s 2024 and I can’t just stream a game I’m willing to pay for is number one on MLB’s long and embarrassing list of unforced errors.

Fwiw, we’re all loving the Padre casts. You can buy all their games for $100 a year or $20 a month. Straight to phones, tablets, MLBTV app… it’s all intertwined. Bonus features are one free “Game of the Day” and all telecasts of the Pads MiLB games, too. You can jump to any day and catch-up (we were out of town for the Cubs series and I caught up quickly upon getting home.) I think this is the “future” of all teams? Idk but we dig it here.

Perhaps the only detraction, and I understand why they do it, but you have to keep “Location” (GPS) enabled. So we couldn’t watch that Cubs series whilst on a small vacation, but we were busy anyhow.

That’s brutal, RCT. And sounds familiar- previous seasons on cable were similar here. I’m about halfway between Petco and Anaheim, but I can’t get anything Angels here. The only chance is if they are that free Game of the Day (which is always a random game, which I like.) You can also watch that free game in either team’s broadcast, which is also cool. We’ll go to Angel games, but the family might want the same streaming package if it ever exists.

I hate the exclusivity BS. I mean I guess they make more money but it definitely turns a lot of people off. I would like for every team to manage their own broadcasts and MLB help get them all lucrative sponsorships and better market how to watch the games with them just being all on one platform. Definitely not as lucrative but it would prevent issues with broadcasting like they’re having now and could help grow viewership numbers. I wouldn’t mind paying more to not have blackouts and exclusive BS. Also less people watch exclusive games so advertisers should and maybe are not happy with them unless they work that into the deals, I don’t know.

MLB won’t reach the next generation until blackouts are lifted and the games available to all regardless of geographical location. Why pay hundreds of dollars to watch a baseball game when you can’t even watch your own favorite team? MLB has lost base with the fan base over the last 25 years and it’s only getting worse. At this rate, after the millennials and generation X are gone, MLB won’t have a fan base anymore. They need to get a grip on how fans can have viewership of all games locally and nationally without blackouts and/or additional fees. I miss growing up in the 80s and 90s when I can turn on the TV after school and watch my team. I could also flip to watch the Cubs, Braves, A’s, and any other team. Instead, MLB has turn to greed and abuse to all fan bases. How this is legal still, is baffling.

When MLB had multiple channels to view and it was automatic on Saturday morning it was twib notes and then 10am game followed by a 1pm game those were the days.

now they block you from local teams even if your 80-140 miles away

When do you suppose MLB will figure out that if I really want to go to a game, I’ll pay for tix and make a day of it. But if I’m 120 miles away and want to follow my team, I’d like to see it on TV without being blacked out! Let’s put them on an NBC off channel, like 26-2 and let NBC sell commercials rather than play re-runs of American Pickers or Storage Wars! No doubt they’d sell more commercial time for a live sports broadcast! C’mon man!

I’m so po’d to be paying extra to my streaming service to see my local team and then to have them blacked out by Apple, Peacock or whoever. MLB owners are just soaking us again. Why don’t they just raffle off the TV rights to every game?

Prime already does a good job with Thursday Night Football, so moving into baseball coverage seems logical, especially considering how many Prime members there are.

Hulu+. It automatically records every Giants’ game, so I can watch later if I’m busy, and fast-forward through the commercials. Not an A’s fan, but I get all their games too. In fact, right now I’m watching the A’s/Rangers rebroadcast of an earlier game.

Hulu+ also carries MLB network, I was able to catch some of the Mets/Braves series, and Red Sox/O’s series. And I’ll be able to watch some of the Rangers/Astros tomorrow if I want after the Giants/Rays game. Hulu has gotten more expensive, but it’s still a lot cheaper than what I used to pay for cable.

MLB needs to dump Apple TV along with Peacock. Hulu has ESPN+, which seems like they have almost unlimited bandwidth. That’s who MLB should be working with for streaming.

Just get rid of the Apple channel nobody wants it and I ain’t paying for any more channels or services. So I will have to miss my teams games that get put on there.

Side note MLB Network will show a 40-50 year old movie (for the 20th time) on Friday nights while the Apple TV channel will show a game of the week……man somebody got their head in the wrong direction.

@Darthyen – Re: MLB Network showing a re-run on a Fri night — MLB owns MLB Network, so by playing exclusive Fri night games, they wouldn’t be increasing revenue, like they would selling that exclusivity to a streamer (Apple+, Peacock, etc.). That’s why, most likely, if you find any games on MLB Network, it’ll be on off-peak days/nights (Mon, Tues, etc.) that most networks, streamers wouldn’t pay for — while also allows them to increase their content that they would be playing a re-run of the 2003 ALDS or a documentary on Dizzy Dean that has a fraction of the audience.

I agree about Apple+ – it’s by far one of the worst streamers and not even worth a free trial that have done 4x already. That being said, as we’re seeing with Nike and jerseys, MLB has low standards as long as you’re willing to pay premium for their product. I’ve heard Adam & Eve Channel will be the exclusive carrier of future A’s games, but don’t quote me on that.

$30M is a lot of scratch for 19 Sunday morning games; clearly NBC didn’t get the additional subscriber numbers to make it worthwhile — and I doubt anybody else will.
