Red Sox Acquire Garrett Cooper

By Mark Polishuk | April 27, 2024 at 10:58pm CDT

5:24pm: The deal is now official, as noted by Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. The Red Sox transferred Casas to the 60-day injured list to make room for Cooper on the 40-man roster.

2:39pm: The Red Sox have acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper, the Miami Herald’s Craig Mish writes (via X).  MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo reported (X link) earlier this afternoon that the Sox were “closing in on” a deal for Cooper’s services, and Cotillo and Sean McAdam report that the Cubs will receive cash considerations in return.

Chicago designated Cooper for assignment earlier this week, and today’s trade officially ends Cooper’s time in Wrigleyville after 12 games and 41 plate appearances.  Cooper signed a minor league deal with the Cubs during the offseason and made the Opening Day roster, then hit a respectable .270/.341/.432 with one home run over those 41 PA.

The Cubs intended to use Cooper as a veteran complement to Michael Busch at first base, but Busch has hit so well that the Cubs simply couldn’t take him out of the lineup, limiting Cooper’s playing time to mostly DH and pinch-hitting work.  Cooper was also DFA’ed so Chicago could add Matt Mervis to the active roster, as Mervis was on such a heater at Triple-A that the Cubs wanted to give him more of a look in their lineup, leaving Cooper as even more of an odd man out.

While Cooper’s avenues to playing time were closed off in Chicago, the Red Sox had an unwelcome vacancy created at first base when Triston Casas went on the 15-day IL.  Casas’ recovery timeline is still very fluid, as Casas stated that estimates have ranged from anywhere from 3-9 weeks.  Boston had interest in Cooper back in January when he was still a free agent, and the Sox have now finally landed their man perhaps a few months later than expected.

Over eight MLB seasons, Cooper has hit .268/.337/.435 over 1854 career plate appearances, with 57 home runs.  Translating to a 111 wRC+, Cooper tended to fly under the radar as a member of a rebuilding Marlins team for much of his career, and his playing time was further limited by injuries.  He even made the All-Star team in 2022, though Cooper’s production dipped to a modest .251/.304/.419 over 457 combined PA with Miami and San Diego in 2023.

Cooper made a pair of appearances in left field for the Cubs this season, marking his first bit of outfield work since 2021.  While not exactly a versatile player, Cooper can at least chip in as an outfielder in a pinch, extending his value to the Red Sox even after Casas eventually returns.  With Cooper now on the roster, Bobby Dalbec (acting as the interim first baseman) is probably getting sent back to Triple-A, as Dalbec has struggled badly at the the plate this season.

Makes sense. I wonder if Hamilton or Dalbec is being optioned to make room for him

“Dalbec is being optioned”….1B should be one of the easier positions to fill and Dalbec is not a Major League prospect by any definition, so why keep up the pretense by keeping him in your system?….Dalbec has gotten almost 1000 plate appearances and this guy wouldn’t have gotten even 200 PAs on the Redsox of 8+ years ago. Dalbec is
proof positive that the Redsox owners are asleep at the wheel, because one phone call replaces Dalbec with a MUCH better player(Cron or Cooper or even Dominic Smith and Luke Voit).

Cooper was only with the Cubs for a short time, but his demeanor and effort were top-notch. I’m not sold on swapping him for Mervis but the Red Sox got a Pro, and a good guy.

Off (was never on) the Dalbec train, but have to look at it realistically. Dalbec is by far, the best defensive 1b/3b on the roster, lack of a bat or not. Hamilton lacks both a glove and bat. Valdez’s bat has been sorely lacking for 2 full weeks. They could play Reyes at 2b until Grissom returns soon.

MLB, Dominic Smith? Just a left handed Dalbec (less potential power, a few more likely hits). Unfortunately, I took was fooled by Dalbec who “looks great” in a uniform and has improved defensively. Hoping he’s a ‘late bloomer” so regardless where, he gets another chance. Both he and Hamilton are gone with Grissom also coming back.

Should be Dalbec since Cooper predominantly plays 1B but he can also play some OF in a pinch.

On second thought, there’s no logical 1st base backup other than Dalbec and he’s played solid defense as well. Valdez and Hamilton probably both get optioned for Cooper/Grissom.

Hamilton will likely be optioned when Vaughan Grissom makes his Red Sox debut which might come as early as Tuesday.

Of the IF bench bats, you almost need to break it down like this: Reyes should be safe as he’s out of options and has the most versatility which Cora values most. You’d want to say one of hamilton/valdez go down due to being redundant – they both play up the middle, which Reyes also does, but aren’t so much corner IFers. Valdez *did* have a good bit of 3B as a minor leaguer in Hou, but, hasn’t played there for a long time now, and, Boston hasn’t used him there yet.

Cora probably prefers sending dalbec down, but, with Raffy still having been banged up you almost have to keep dalbec up a little while.

I’m inclined to think Hamilton goes down first, then if Raffy proves healthy with the knee you see dalbec sent down when grissom comes up.

GA – totally agree that Hamilton and Valdez are redundant, so there is agreement that one of them should go to AAA. With Devers knee and should injuries, Dalbec makes sense on this roster for now in that he is the best defensive 3B on the team especially if Devers continues to struggle with his health. Cooper would be an additional RH hitter as the Red Sox have not done well against LH starters. Lineup vs LH starters would look like…

        C-Wong
        1B-Cooper
        2B-Reyes
        SS-Rafaela
        3B-Dalbec
        LF-Refsnyder
        RF-O’Neill
        (all right handed hitters)

        CF-Duran-L
        DH-Devers-L

Once Grissom returns, Dalbec would go down as Reyes would back up 3B (although he is really a black hole in the lineup with a lower ceiling than Dalbec). Reyes does play more positions than Dalbec though. It will be interest to see how Breslow plays it.

Looks like breslow chose dalbec over Reyes, although, if Reyes passes through waivers that doesn’t mean things couldn’t change later in the year.

GA – Even though Valdez and Hamilton are redundant, the Red Sox thinking must be that Valdez and Hamilton have more up side, which is true. Reyes make sense to DFA as Dalbec is better defensively at 3B and 1st, Grissom and Rafaela are at 2B and SS respectively and are RH and better players! There is really no playing time for Reyes with Grissom returning. Valdez was getting nearly all the playing time at 2B anyway. Lastly, Reyes has no options. Even if Reyes clears waivers, the Red Sox probably do not need him as Meidroth players 2B and 3B and is a better hitter if a RH infielder is needed later.

For the cost, purely cash considerations, this was a move breslow *had* to make.

All that said, i’ll be disappointed not to see if dalbec wasn’t turning the page after hitting in 3 straight games.

I think grinding out at the MLB level could pay dividends with regular, everyday ABs for him. Not only was his line skewed by a handful of bad outcomes before being sent down just after the start of the year, but, I think a bit of tinkering with his swing at the mlb level were in order – and may have been getting made.

If you look at his results, 3 things stand out to me –

      1) *no* infield fly out on balls in play at the mlb level. Not one.

      2) correspondingly, almost 2/3 of his balls in play were ground balls, while his line drive percentage also dropped well into the single digits percentage wise.

      3) not only had he not barreled up any pitches, hit average launch angle was a *negative* number.

Put it all together and Bobby had been swinging over the top of pitches, and failing to elevate. If they worked to get him to change up his mechanics to bring the bat through the slightly lower than he had been, you’d start to see the line drives that helped propell a chunk of his hitting, and, hopefully elevate some to improve the launch angle.

Perhaps we won’t see it, maybe we will. All depends on the corresponding moves and who plays where and when.

It cost them nothing and a .500 team is a playoff contender these days (not to mention a lot more interesting to watch than sad sack no-chancers like 2020). I came into the year as “full throttle” pessimistic as anyone but this team has held up pretty well. If they can add a decent MLBer to keep hopes of the summer mattering alive why not?

Dalbec is a living monument to mediocrity. Yes, he has a 3-game hitting streak, but does anyone in their right mind believe he has suddenly, miraculously figured it out? At best he is a change of scenery candidate. At worst he needs to head to one of the Asian leagues for a total reset IF they’ll have him.

Dalbec is a perfect change of scenery candidate as you said. If he gets DFA’d might I suggest the White Sox pick him up? He can work on his skills in a no-stress environment with a team that doesn’t have to move him if he starts slumping.

Man I still can’t believe Bloom pulled off that trade, getting Abreu and Valdez in return. What a steal! Vazquez is on the verge of being released, still sucks defensively and his OPS since leaving the Red Sox is just .584

Fever — That deadline as a whole was a colossal WTF, but I agree that the Vázquez trade was probably Bloom’s best move in his Red Sox tenure. The only other one that comes to mind is the Renfroe signing, but I think that has to be called a wash considering what he ended up parlaying Renfroe’s great year into.

At the time, it was a tough one. I was over 4 hours after 20 under 4 hour marathons. Those darn hills in the second half are quite miserable. Coincidentally, my BM time was very close to the time of the bombing, just not the same year. It is a runner’s dream to run it.

The fact Dalbec can play third or first and has power, he should stay.Be a late inning Defensive sub.Unless we want to see Devers or Casas make an error to lose a game.I absolutely don’t know why he struggles so bad in the Majors.Maybe some of the former players on here can tell me.He must have been good to get to that level. If the Red Sox don’t want him trade him to a team that would play him.Hard to make adjustments when you had been 0 for,Bench or sent down.Dalbec over the years has played pretty much every position. Is he worse than Valdez?Better defensively and about the same hitting.

So you’re expecting Casas, who is in the 87th percentile for range and 80th percentile for fielding, and is on the IL for the next 60 days with torn cartilage in his ribs to need Dalbec to spell him defensively in the late innings? Also power is questionable in a guy that hasn’t hit a homerun since September of last season. Call him up in 60 days if you’re still that concerned for Casas’ defense. But Cooper should still be here by then, and he is a good enough defender that can actually get a hit occasionally. Best case scenario here is Dalbec is DFAed and we don’t have to watch him strikeout in half his at bats anymore.

Another hit by Dalbec today. I hope they don’t s3nd him down. He is hitting .174 in the pasr 7 games before today.
He is slow starter as it is, but he is warming up. Let him play. At least he provides really good defense at 2st and 3rd, and can play some OF and 2nb if needed.

Not just his 4th hit in 4 straight games, but, he also put down the sac bunt that set up the sac fly bringing home a run as well.

      That’s 4 for 14 in that stretch,
      .286 ba

Hmm… Devers at DH, dalbec at 3rd, and Cooper at 1st? Nah, too much to hope for.

He had to add that 2 rbi double in the bottom 8th. Make it 5 of 15 in the last 4 games a clean .333 avg, with two hits today, single/double, plus his sac bunt, 2 runs scored, and 3 rbis.

Fever, the downside to the surge is you’re losing one of your data points.

Sox are now 8-11 vs >.500 teams. That also means that out of 28 games, 19 have been played against teams that are holding winning records.

The 7-2 record. against <.500 teams means they're also taking care of business against the weak squads, as they should.

Hopefully the kids don't all begin to run out of gas in late August. If that can hold up, and the injury bug is exterminated, I still think a winning record could wind up within reach.

GASox – I think you’re including the Bucs as a winning team, but they are just .500 🙂

But hey it was an enjoyable game and I’m going to keep my skepticism to myself. Tonight it’s my man Tanner with the Cubs having another bullpen game so I’m expecting their first series win against a team that currently has a winning record 🙂

Dalbec OPS for the last three years covering roughly 400 at bats.

        .652

        .570

        .268

You can’t play first base in ML baseball with those numbers.

Then again, that .570 you reference was 49 ABs scattered over 21 games. The .268 of this season is already out of date, but, had reflected 43 ABs over 18 games.

The new information is 47 ABs over 19 games, and a .350 OPS.

There *IS* something to be said for a player jumping from aaa pitching to mlb caliber and needing to adjust/acclimate/etc. Regular, consistent playing time matters. It’s that simple.

And, as you can see, since you’re citing such small samples, a single start today and he raised the OPS by .082 points.

When a player who had a cold start begins to adjust, thats what happens to the averages.

He’s hitting under .200 with a sub .600 OPS over his last 400 at bats covering three seasons.

What sample sizes do you suggest? I know we all wish we could live in 2021 forever but time moves on.

          Actually Icon, you’re wrong again.

For 2022 through 2024, dalbec put up an aggregate .268 obp and a .335 slg.

Ops for that is exactly .603 ops, which, is above a .600 here you can see those values: fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?stats=bat&…

However, what you aren’t seeming to grasp is how a player is used impacts their ops, especially for one trying to make the jump to mlb.

Cora/Bloom combined to have had a history of having dalbec called up, then putting him on the bench getting few, if any, plate appearances before sending him back down.

If you can’t grasp that young players don’t adjust to mlb pitching without consistent ABs on a regular basis, and, that their results may suffer because of it, you need to spend more time paying attention to how these things work with the vast majority of prospects.

The ops for dalbec was suppressed by how he was handled. No,he wasn’t likely to be an elite .900+ guy, but, he wouldn’t have been as low as he wound up either.

Your over the top defense of Dalbec is beyond comical.
He’s been awful at the ML level for three years. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Even Dalbec knows it. His strikeout numbers are atrocious. some of the worst in Ml Baseball. But, you know that too.

I do not understand this Dalbec defense at all. The average OPS last season in MLB was .734. Yay .603 I guess. He had the starting 1st base job at the beginning 0f 2022 and proceeded to hit .215/.283/.369. He played in 117 games that year. He’s lucky to even still be on this team. He strikes out in half of his at bats and can’t hit anything that is 95 mph+. The reason he doesn’t hit is because he isn’t good, not because Cora and Bloom didn’t give him consistent at bats. When he gets consistent at bats he is exposed as a terrible hitter. How many more months in a row are we expecting him to play before he cracks the mendoza line here? Because there are slow starts and then there is having 6 hits and 24 strikeouts in 19 games. He’s dreadful.

Mook, let’s take it slow since you either didn’t read, or couldn’t follow, how it was laid out elsewhere so maybe a different way will work.

You point to 19 games, and 6 hits vs 24Ks.

          1) Lets approach first is his bat heating up, or, getting cold…

What has his batting line been in/over the last 4 consecutive games?

          2) you talk about “19 games”… do you know what his role was on 3/30 & 4/17? And whether he even got to pick up a bat those days?

          3) are you aware he was sent down to AAA after the 4/7 game until 4/12? And at the time he was sent down, in 10 games the red sox played, dalbec made an appearance of any sort in only 6, and, in the entire 10 games he had a whopping grand total of 9 PAs?

We’ll start there before moving onto more advanced concepts. When you attempt to portray things as a guy played 19 days of regular ABs and scattered 6 hits, thats not just misleading, is a gross distortion of facts.

Not just his 4th hit in 4 straight games,
        ====================
Even including this small sample size, over the past 4 games, Dalbec has a .733 with a .556 BABIP. That means his OPS reverts back to .222 when his BABIP reverts back to .300.

        It’s still a 6/0 K/W in 15 ABs.

        • GASoxFan

Joe, you’re forgetting that the babip before yesterday was sub .200, and it’s still only .261 even with yesterday.

What that means is that over time it should go up further, especially if what we are seeing us a change in where his swing is passing through the zone (another good data point is his fly out to 1B was his first flyback out of the season to an IFer, another good sign he’s stopping driving wormburners by just hitting the tops of the balls.)

I still maintain he’s not the next coming of Soto, but, as fans we ought to be fair about what is going on and not distort things in a negative light that the actual data doesn’t support.

It was exactly .200 by my calcs, but that still doesn’t do you much good. He had a .269 OPS before yesterday. so even if his .200 reverted to .300, his adjusted OPS would still only be .469.

IMO, the best way to look at the stats is to ignore everything but the HRs and the K/W. Over 600 ABs for this year, he would project to 306/38 with -0- HRs.

There is always a chance, but the numbers couldn’t get any worse.

Chemistry is fascinating but I was not very good at science much to my father’s disappointment. In all fairness to the food industry, most of the chemicals are fairly safe unless you ingest them in mass quantities.

The “estimated” part is kind of nonsense. I’m estimated to wake up in 3-9 hours after I go to sleep. It all depends on how hydrated I am at the end of the day. But seriously folks, the injury has a high degree of variability, that’s why the wide range of recovery options. I guess they are willing to hold him out that long to make sure he has a full recovery. Cooper enables that caution, although I hope Dalbec can contribute some as well.
