Left-hander Cam Booser is joining the Red Sox in Pittsburgh tomorrow, per Ian Browne of MLB.com. The lefty will be added to the club’s 40-man roster, per Andrew Parker of Beyond the Monster, who adds that lefty Joe Jacques will be optioned to open a spot on the active roster. The Sox will also need to open a 40-man roster spot but could do so easily by transferring Trevor Story to the 60-day injured list, since he will miss the rest of the year due to shoulder surgery.
Booser will crack a major league roster for the first time at an usually old age, as his 32nd birthday is just a few weeks away. It’s a testament to his determination that he will make it to the show after all these years, as he made his minor league debut over a decade ago, playing Rookie ball in the Twins’ system in 2013. After a few years in the minors, he topped out at High-A in 2017, not pitching in any official capacity for the next few years.
He resurfaced with the Chicago Dogs, an indy ball team, in 2021. He tossed 23 1/3 innings with a 1.93 earned run average for the Dogs that year and showed enough promise to get a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks for 2022. He tossed 25 innings in Double-A but struggled with a 6.48 ERA and got released. He then joined the Lancaster Barnstormers, another indy ball club, and tossed 11 2/3 innings with a 4.63 ERA.
He was able to secure himself a minor league contract with the Red Sox for 2023 and made 48 Triple-A appearances last year. He had a 4.99 ERA in his 57 2/3 innings, striking out 26.7% of batters faced while walking 9.7%. He received an invite to major league camp in 2024 and seemed to impress manager Álex Cora, as the skipper mentioned him to reporters last month, highlighting his high-90s fastball and ability to throw offspeed pitches in the zone.
It was around that same time during Spring Training that Ian Browne of MLB.com profiled the lefty. Booser apparently retired at the end of the 2017 season following several injuries, a marijuana suspension and “self-admitted attitude problems.” He then turned his attention to a carpentry career but stumbled back onto the mound by doing lessons with kids and rediscovering his past form.
“After the kiddos would leave, I would stay in the dark and throw into a net by myself for a couple of months. And through that process, I found out that my arm felt better than it ever had with that time off. One day, I got on the mound and my fastball was pretty good, 97-98 [mph]. So we figured, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ I met with a trainer back home the next day and went out there to [independent] ball in 2021, and it’s been a great journey ever since.”
Booser didn’t break camp with the Sox but reported to Triple-A and has thrown 6 2/3 innings over four appearances this year, allowing two earned runs while striking out 15 opponents against just one walk. Though he obviously didn’t take the traditional path, Booser has found his way to the big leagues in amazingly unique fashion. The Sox have Brennan Bernardino and Joely Rodríguez in their bullpen but Booser will give them a third southpaw option.

came – Don’t be surprised if he gets sent packing within a couple days.
Pivetta is due off the IL this weekend, I don’t see any other pitcher getting pushed out unless they finally decide to cut ties with Joely.

True. Now that booser given the chance. Why the slow track on Kelly?
RickEO
Phenomenal. Love it. Goodluck kid
Thomar
Fireman of the year. ……. Nothing against him, wish him luck but this team is so woefully built.
AL34
I hope he makes it with his career. This Red Sox team is so flawed that they will be in a major hole by Mid May. I was wrong, this team is dropping like a rock now. Than you for the Full Throttle Kennedy. Thank you John Henry for giving a spending budget for a GM no one wanted in Breslow. This team has fallen on bad times.
Fever Pitch Guy
Al – Great post as always! This is indeed the darkest period in Red Sox history since Harry Frazee, we have an ownership group that is greedy and unethical with no motivation to win. A big drop in organic revenue will teach them a lesson.
Stan Papi
Looking at the Sox line up tonight any Sox fan needs to be a boozer to see that. Wong at DH? Hamilton batting 7th? Whatever happened to Bill Mueller batting champ batting 9th?
Kraft and numb nuts John Henry worst owners ever Lately.

Stan – Remember these headlines this past offseason?
si.com/mlb/red-sox/news/premier-slugger-reportedly…
“The Red Sox are seeking an impact right-handed bat with positional versatility.”
“Frugality appears to be far more of a priority for Boston than putting the best players available on the field.”
Franklin Souze
Frugality is the tittle of Page One of the Private Equity Playbook.

Love me a nice set of tittles!
Fever Pitch Guy
GB – Ha! I knew somebody would pick up on that, other than me ;O)
DBH1969
@Stan, I like Ceddanne hitting 9th. If he can get on base for Duran, good things can happen. When back, I would follow Duran with O’Neil, Casas, Wong, Devers, pot luck 6th to 8th.
Just set a line up and stick with it. Give everyone time to find their timing/swing. It can not be helping all these hitting under .250 to be bounced all over the place.
Heck, both Torre and Francona used the same line ups for like 47 years straight.
Fever Pitch Guy
IM – Even though it would probably be best for him, the Sox likely won’t do that. Because they need his versatility too much with the Red Sox, and they would look like absolute fools after giving him $50M guaranteed.
Plus it’s not like the Sox are playing for anything this year.
Fever Pitch Guy
DBH – I’m totally with you on Rafaela and using the same lineups whenever possible.
However when and if Tyler and Devers return healthy, the 3-5 slots have to be some combination of Casas, Devers and O’Neill.
Yoshida would be great in the 2-hole if he stops sucking, otherwise I’d slot Grissom there.
Trollfree
I M Insane – Great post because all problems lead back to one guy.
Bruin1012
“ Yosemite Cam” makes his way to the big club.
Fever Pitch Guy
Bruin – Good thing he won’t be facing anyone named Ulf (as a hockey fan you’ll get that joke).
Bruin1012
lol, now I just want to see Jorge Benitez get the call he’s filthy from the left side everything he throws moves he’s really hard to square up if he controls his walks he has a chance to be a high end lefty reliever. No one has hit this guy at any level it’s time to send Jo-Rod packing.
Bruin1012
David Hamilton is awful at short and Romy Gonzalez isn’t much better. It’s a no brainer you put Rafaela at short and bat him 9th and you play Duran in center flanked by O’Neil in left and Abreu in right. This by far the best defensive lineup they can throw out there. Rafaela is easily the best defensive shortstop they have right now. I just don’t get why Cora can’t see this.
Trollfree
Bruin1012 = I agree. It’s not ideal but if you are maximizing defense among SS and OF you have to go with Rafaela at SS and O”Neill, Duran and Abreu. When Anthony is ready, it will be interesting to see who the odd man out is.
I’m worried about O’Neill because Devers’ bonehead play completely stopped the momentum the team was developing. Just one more reason to move him. He simply lacks the baseball acumen to know when to go after a hit baseball. Whether it’s a pop-up or a ground ball to his left his hero mindset clouds his judgement and he makes bad choices. Couple that with his lack of defensive skills and he’s costing the team errors and now he is a danger to players around him.
Houck, Kutter,Bello and Whitlock all have taken steps forward and that’s great news for 2025 and beyond. For me, the team is a dichotomy of bright future and miserable failure. Brewlow needs to clean it up for 2025.
I’ve been laid up for a month, how have the AA and AAA guys looked? Any significant stand outs?
Bruin1012
Sorry to hear you were laid up was wondering what happened to you hope your getting better.
I’m in hopes that this is Cora’s last year and Breslow gets free rein to put his guy into place. As far as the minors go Booser, Benitez, Kelly, and Guerrero all relievers all look like viable big league depth. In AA Penrod looks good a couple more dominating starts and he should get promoted to AAA he hasn’t given up a run yet. Anthony isn’t close to being ready I just can’t see him up in the bigs much before 2025. I’m concerned about Mayer even though it looks like a fast start the numbers are lying in his case. Kyle Teel to me looks like a big league hitter he is still maintaining huge line drive rates and just looks like a big league hitter. Miguel Bleis looks lost at the plate can’t handle spin It’s time to be concerned about him. ERC has put on like 20 pounds he’s throwing 95+ with heavy sink he’s one to watch and Johanfran Garcia a catcher at Salem is murdering the ball big time power and a rifle for an arm. That’s what I have noticed so far.
Trollfree
Bruin1012 – Thanks for the minor league update and the kind words. An unexpected pair of brain bleeds caused by migraines scared the heck out of the family. On my way back and things keep getting better but never saw it coming nor did my doctors.
JoeBrady
I don’t disagree, but-
1-Part of me wants to see if Hamilton can player. he has Duran-level speed.
2-And while your alignment would be better, I wonder if the RS don’t want the added pressure of having Ceddanne play SS as well as learning to hit.
But yeah, maybe in another 2-3 weeks.
Or simply trade for a glove.
Bruin1012
Newsflash Hamilton is and has been bad defensively at shortstop and will always be well below par defensively. He can’t hit his way on yes he is an excellent base runner but other than a pinch runner he’s just not a big leaguer. The answer is simple the Red Sox have a relative logjam in the outfield and Rafaela is by far there best option at short. Play the guy there they need him there more then any other position It’s just not that hard.
JoeBrady
I’d like to see him throw. Guys that can throw in the high 90s, but have personality flaws, could provide a decent return. Guys like Jacques look like they won’t ever be any better than they are now.
dopt
Great story for sure. Determination is the correct term. Must be something to resisting the arm and then it comes back with more velo. Who is the “rookie” that did that.
Made a movie about him. Plus several others. Maybe absolute rest and getting mind off the stressors is a benefit

Jim Morris ain’t walking through that door….

I can empathize with his career path. Good luck!

I’m just flabbergasted by this story. Once upon a time my son was a teammate of Cameron in Little League and he was head and shoulders better than everyone else. It is so cool to see a feel good story. Cam has turned his life into another tale of “The Rookie “. Way to go!!!!!!!
