White Sox Designate Zach Remillard For Assignment

By Steve Adams | April 22, 2024 at 3:35pm CDT

3:35pm: The Sox have now made it official, selecting Mendick and designating Remillard for assignment. They also reinstated John Brebbia from the injured list and optioned right-hander Nick Nastrini and infielder Lenyn Sosa to Triple-A Charlotte. Nastrini’s option means they will need another starter later this week.

11:15am: The White Sox will designate infielder Zach Remillard for assignment in order to open a spot on the roster for fellow utilityman Danny Mendick, reports Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. Van Schouwen first reported last night that Mendick’s contract would be selected prior to today’s game.

It’s the second DFA of the calendar year for Remillard, whom the White Sox designated back in January but selected back to the 40-man roster nine days ago. Now 30 years old, Remillard has spent his entire career in the White Sox organization after the team selected him in the tenth round of the 2016 draft.

Remillard has seen big league time in each of the past two seasons, albeit in fleeting fashion. He tallied 160 plate appearances last year and another five this season. Overall, he’s a .250/.292/.316 hitter in that limited sample. Remillard posted a nice .280/.373/.400 slash in 491 plate appearances during his 2022 run in Triple-A Charlotte, but those numbers dipped in 2023 and he’s out to a dismal .120/.224/.160 start through his first 58 Triple-A appearances so far in 2024.

While Remillard has primarily played third base in his professional career (2356 innings), he’s also logged time at shortstop (1646 innings), at second base (961 innings), at first base (696 innings), in left field (333 innings), in right field (133 innings) and in center field (76 innings).

The White Sox will have a week to trade Remillard, pass him through outright waivers or release him. Because he was outrighted after clearing waivers back in January, he’d have the right to reject a second outright assignment in favor of free agency if he goes unclaimed a second time.

Maybe a decade ago they were “underrated” and “underappreciated”. They’re a trash organization. And I’m a Sox fan

Bob – I don’t even know what the heck he means?

A franchise cannot be “underrated”, they are what their record says they are. They haven’t made it to an ALCS game in 19 years, and before that 31 years ago. Nobody is gonna mistakenly think they are good unless Brad Pitt makes a movie about them.

As for “underappreciated”, that would be the Rays who for many years were a good team with lousy attendance and ratings.

The Pale Hosers: Soon (if not already) the most ignored, uninspiring, futureless organization in MLB, if not in all major sports.

Tell that to every stadium that built itself after 1990. All copied the White Sox stadium in an extreme way.

pin – I have a cousin who lives outside Chicago. Around 20 years ago he went to a ChiSox game there and couldn’t believe they allowed fans to run onto the field and beat up a coach right there in front of him.

He went back the next year and watched from his seats in disbelief as they allowed fans to run onto the field and attack an umpire.

He never went back there again, says he’d rather attend a game in Philly wearing Braves gear than attend another ChiSox home game.

Funny. Worst franchise in sports. Worst owner in sports.

2024 White Sox it’s all about shuffling the AAAA players around trying to resemble a professional franchise.

Playing with “Deck Chairs” is our best move right now. Hoping to find a deck chair or two that is potentially a trade chip, or a player. Playing deck chairs also gives us the best shot at moving to the #1 position in next years draft. It’s all we got right now.

WSox cannot pick higher than 10th next year since they were part of lottery for upcoming ’24 draft. They don’t even have that minor benefit.

Haven’t watched/listened at all this year or most of last year, but hope most fans are tuning out since JR has mailed it in. If the lack of relevance is met with mutual disinterest from fans (toward roster, unqualified Grifol/Getz, no player development competence, etc)…….maybe the financials and lack of ratings will become unsustainable.
TV and radio stations can hopefully bow out of deals and make the Chairman beg for all revenue streams he takes for granted.

Sheets has been a negative WAR player up until this season. As for this year 3 of his 8 extra base hits and his lobe SB all came in one game.

I’m all for being an optimist. But when a career .230 hitter starts batting .250 at age 28 and people start acting as though he’s breaking out, it’s quite the stretch.

Can’t underestimate a bottom dweller and they are appreciated by every team they play. All the Sox announcers have to talk about is the food at that cold sterile park the taxpayers built for them. However, if you’re being DFA’d by that lousy organization, for the second time, maybe it’s time to reassess your career

I was trying to explain to my wife how bad the White Sox really are this season.

I started with they are so bad that they are on pace to match the Cleveland Spiders for the worst winning percentage in MLB history. She was “but that was a long time ago”.

Then I went to right now they are so bad that they are playing worse than replacement level as a team. The batters have a -2.1 WAR as a team and the pitchers a -0.2 WAR.

So I said, if a team with a good farm system like the Orioles or Brewers or Padres called up all their best minor league players to the majors for the rest of the season they would win more 15-20 more games than White Sox are on pace to win.

    That did it.

I find the fact that you share Cleveland Spiders and WAR conversations with your wife in relation to the White Sox highly disturbing.

I’m pretty sure she could have figured it out herself if you just would have made her watch a couple of innings.
