Giants To Promote Mason Black

By Mark Polishuk | May 5, 2024 at 4:45pm CDT

The Giants will start Mason Black against the Phillies on Monday, manager Bob Melvin told reporters (including Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle) during today’s pregame media session.  It will mark Black’s Major League debut, and the Giants will have to make space for the right-hander on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters.

MLB Pipeline rates Black as the seventh-best prospect in the San Francisco farm system, while Baseball America puts the him in the eighth spot.  Black’s slider and sinking fastball each earned 60 grades on BA’s scouting report and 55s from Pipeline, though the problem is that these two plus pitches account for virtually all of Black’s arsenal, as his changeup is only okay and he has only lightly experimented with other offerings.  Baseball America thinks Black could eventually end up as a reliever due to his limited array of pitches, and since Pipeline notes that Black’s velocity has hit the 100mph mark (up from his usual 92-94mph range) “in shorter stints,” there is some intrigue in a move to the pen down the road.

For now, however, there’s plenty of potential in Black as a starting pitcher.  A third-round pick for the Giants in the 2021 draft, Black has a 3.22 ERA over 262 1/3 career minor league innings.  This includes an eye-opening 1.01 ERA in six starts and 26 2/3 innings at Triple-A Sacramento this season, as Black has a 29% strikeout rate and eight percent walk rate to add to his impressive numbers.

While a 4.01 xFIP and a .246 BABIP indicate that Black isn’t as entirely dominant as his ERA seems, the performance still stands out in the batter-friendly environs of the Pacific Coast League.  BA’s scouting report suggests that Black’s tendency to pitch on the fringes of the strike zone might play better in the majors than in the minors, as human umpires could be more forgiving than the automated ball-strike system.

Since Blake Snell went on the injured list on April 24, San Francisco has used bullpen games to cover Snell’s two scheduled turns in the rotation.  Black hasn’t thrown more than 71 pitches in a game this season and could be on something of a short leash, as Daulton Jefferies (called up to the roster today) might act behind Black in a piggyback capacity.  However, given Black’s status as a prospect of note, the Giants are likely to give him a longer look if he pitches well.  The Phillies are a very tough draw for a pitcher’s first Major League game, yet there is some symbolism at play, as Black was born in Scranton and grew up a Phillies fan.

With Snell, Robbie Ray, Alex Cobb, and Tristan Beck all on the IL, San Francisco has gotten good results from rookies Kyle Harrison and Keaton Winn, Jordan Hicks has looked very sharp as a starter, and ace Logan Webb has been his typical solid self.  There’s some room for Black to bank some starts as a regular fifth starter, and he should get two outings since the Giants don’t have another off-day until May 16.

Take your pick. It’s an easy choice – White Jefferies Hjelle. Slater obvious choice to make room for backup catcher

Saw an interesting article on Hjelle… it discussed how he isn’t using his height to his advantage because of his arm slot, which releases at the same height as a 6’3” pitcher. Seems wild to lose 8” on your pitch-release point.

        Randy Johnson didn’t either.

You’re right and he was the first to pop into my mind, but he’s an exception because his arm slot was around the side (low three-quarter) which would mess lefties up. It wasn’t a conventional arm slot. I think Hjelle could benefit from using Johnson as a potential pitching model.

Johnson had that mean looking intimidating presence, while Hjelle looks like a keystone cop. Only bumbling robbers fear him. Seriously though, if I was him I would totally try to study Randy and gleen anything else besides just the height factor.
Nobody was comfortable hitting against him, and doves were not safe.

as long as the Giants can hold the other team two runs per game – we will have a super team

there’s very little margin of error if the other team scores more than three runs

Based on the offseason moves Zaidi made,I knew this Giants team team would have a hard time scoring runs. But man, having watched them play the past 2 games….it’s just BAD. No impact bats.

And Chapman, signed under presumption that his stellar glove would somehow make up for his mediocre bat? Chapman has a league leading 6 errors.

The quickest way to lose credibility is to cite hyperbole as a statistic. Either that, or a weak attempt at sarcasm. Since the oldest guy on the team, Cobb is 36, with the 2nd oldest, Ahmed, at 34, your comment qualifies as clear hyperbole.

As for the average age of the position players, the Giants are an older team. They’re the 3rd oldest with the Mets and Dodgers the only teams older, with the Dodgers being the oldest. On the other hand the Giants have the 2nd youngest pitching staff in MLB.

Overall the Giants are the 12th youngest team in MLB, younger than the D’backs, Orioles and Reds. The 5 oldest teams, youngest to oldest, are the Jays, Braves, Cards, Dodgers, and the Mets.

Time to cleanse the roster of the “has beens” and move on from this downward spiral towards mediocrity………..why Jeffries??…….Black offers a fresh approach…too many retreads on the 40 man roster……time for Slater to take a demotion, Sabol offers some spunk….give Ramos a shot…..Schmidt is hitting well in AAA……injector some new blood and new faces…….

Time for a change at the top. “Big Moves” for 2024 have not yet worked out. Best moves have been the players who were dumped. There are more whose time with the organization is coming to an end.

This exactly. Let the Farhan apologists come out of the woodwork, but this team has been constructed to fail.

I agree. Loosing draft picks and international money to sign avg players to be the exact same team as last year while approaching the luxury tax and could cost them 10 spots on the next draft don’t seem to smart. Signing Lee for that amount and yet to face MLB caliber pitching lol. Could of just signed Michael Taylor. Snell needs all the spring training games to get right for the season. Montgomery would of been better and they would of saved a draft pick. Soler had like 1 good season. Joc would of been as good. They tried but not the right way. One of the worst farms and not to many elite prospects coming up seems like they’re going to be bad for a few years.

Yet there was silence when the moves were being made. It’s only now that the roster construction experts emerge from their deep dark holes. In short, you and your kind as weak as piss.

They need to bring up Luciano Ahmed is terrible. But there’s nothing they can do to make them a winning team this year. Another boring team who can’t score runs.

Give Black a chance. Gonna need him to start games this year. No telling when Cobb will be back. Also, I don’t expect Hicks to have the staying power required for a SP. Rarely gonna pitch deep into games. Still wild. He’s better used in the bullpen.

Hopefully this is the first move of many to start to make this boring, lethargic, slow roster wake the hell up. The Giants’ brass, and yes, us fans, fall in love with players like Yaz and Flores because they’re nice guys who occasionally have great stretches, but they’re slow and old. Time to go full on youth movement and dump/unload Slater(!), Flores, Yaz, Soler, Chapman, Murphy, and Ahmed, and bring up the kids …before it’s too late.

Farhan put together another disastrous team for 2024. He overpays for guys on the way down. Won’t pay for guys in their prime or nearing their prime. His farm system is worth nothing to other teams. Only the kool-aid drinking fans buy his lies that the kids will be the answer. Black fizzled just like all of the others.
