Rangers Sign Kyle Barraclough To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | May 8, 2024 at 9:00pm CDT

The Rangers have signed right-hander Kyle Barraclough to a minor league contract, tweets Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today. He will head to Triple-A Round Rock, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Texas also granted veteran left-hander Danny Duffy his release from a minor league deal, Wilson adds.

Barraclough, who turns 34 later this month, has pitched in parts of nine major league seasons. He was a quality high-leverage reliever for a couple years at the beginning of his career with the Marlins. Barraclough has bounced around the league of late, though he has earned brief MLB looks in each of the last three years.

That included a three-game stint with the Red Sox in 2023. Barraclough gave out far too many free passes, walking six and hitting four batters in 7 2/3 innings. He allowed 11 earned runs along the way. Barraclough had more success with the Sox’s Triple-A team in Worcester, where he turned in a 3.65 ERA across 75 innings. Control was still an issue, as he walked more than 14% of opponents against a slightly below-average 20.4% strikeout rate.

Barraclough started 13 of his 14 Triple-A appearances last year. He has come out of the bullpen for all 291 outings of his big league career. Texas has taken some blows to its rotation depth — the latest came this afternoon when Dane Dunning hit the injured list — but Barraclough’s command suggests he’s better suited as a reliever.

Duffy, 35, returns to the open market. The former World Series winner never got to the majors with Texas and hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since June 2021 when he was a member of the Royals. Duffy has spent the past couple seasons on minor league contracts with the Rangers. He had been working in relief at Round Rock, tossing 18 innings over 10 appearances. Duffy walked 17 of 82 batters faced en route to a 5.50 ERA.

Barraclough pitched really well at Worcester last season. Given how thin the Sox pitching depth is they probably should have brought him back

That said, you might want to avoid Leicester Square in London.

        Clip – Same reason it’s Ar-kan-saw instead of Ar-kansas or Con-net-icut instead of Connect-i-cut.

Folks were tripping back in the colonial days.

Ever wonder where they came up with the name Belchertown? It’s a gas!

Sox go through pitchers like thin toilet paper. They don’t stop to realize what brands are good or not

Idk if it’s fair to base his 2023 season off of essentially one game where he was left in to rot

Fraud – That one game was infamously Cora sending a message to Bloom that he was fed up with all the crap pitchers Bloom was giving him to work with. Bloom was not a fan of Cora and vice versa.

After tonight’s performance by Chris Sale vs the Red Sox, Alex Anthopolous is sending Craig Breslow a breathable ball muzzle.

Sox caught a really unlucky break with Sale. I truly liked Sale and I would’ve been happy keeping him, but you know as soon as he would pitch for us, an injury would happen. I don’t think the Grissom trade was a bad one. Sale is by far the better pitcher but he wasn’t likely to resign with us anyway and he wasn’t going to save this season regardless.

I wouldn’t blame Breslow for the lucky break Sale is getting now. I would, however, blame Breslow for not being prepared to reinforce the rotation with adequate pitchers. Pivetta has never cut it as a reliable starter. He’s never better than a 4 or 5 overall. Guy is excellent on the mound a lot but follows up with mediocre game after mediocre game. You can’t rely him.

Sox go on too many streaks and they don’t have a show stopper

Breslow made the right call here, especially since most Sox fans complained Sale did nothing to help us last year with that contract. Now Sox fans like you (no offense) found something else to complain about.

The results aren’t pretty right now because we haven’t restocked pitching adequately, but you can’t say keeping Sale wasn’t a huge risk.

Team – Best of all, Chris was really having fun last night. He was like a kid again, so happy. It was good to see the future Hall of Famer away from the misery and nonsense of the Sox front office and enjoying baseball again.

What ever happened to the guy that hop, skipped and jumped in his windup and MLB originally allowed it and then didn’t? I remember Barraclough being on the Marlins with him I think.

Leaving barraclough in to get shelled by Houston and tanking the Red Sox season was the most painful and depressing thing I have ever seen as a Red Sox fan.

Throwing darts blind like Cleveland does when trading for or drafting shortstops….nice CY. Unsigned into May he must be the key to our success. At least we get to throw more hail mary’s at TJ surgery recoveries after the all star break, like the success rate for the first few months following rehab for that is….rough to say the least. Fingers crossed one of Mahle or Degrom can toss meaningful innings down the stretch

If you can pitch, come to the Rangers’s HQ today.

This situation is so dire that we will take anybody that can throw a ball 60 feet and 6 inches.
