Giants Designate Raymond Burgos For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | June 26, 2024 at 5:51pm CDT

The Giants announced they’ve designated left-hander Raymond Burgos for assignment (X link via Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area). The move opens the necessary 40-man spot for Hayden Birdsong, who has officially been selected onto the big league roster. San Francisco optioned Mason Black to Triple-A Sacramento to clear an active roster spot for Birdsong.

Burgos only occupied a spot on the 40-man roster for two days. San Francisco selected his contract on Monday. He pitched one inning during his MLB debut, allowing a run on three hits while fanning Tomás Nido for his first strikeout. San Francisco optioned him yesterday and will take him off the roster altogether now that Birdsong is up to start tonight.

A 25-year-old southpaw, Burgos has signed minor league deals with the Giants in each of the last two seasons. He has worked in long relief for Sacramento this year. Burgos has turned in a 1.64 ERA over 22 innings across nine appearances. He has fanned 27.4% of batters faced against a tidy 2.4% walk rate while inducing ground-balls at a lofty 53.6% clip.

Burgos isn’t a hard thrower, averaging 91.2 MPH on his sinker during his big league debut. His Triple-A numbers have been strong enough that another team could give him a look on a waiver claim, though. San Francisco has five days to trade him or try to run him through waivers.

Who, Burgos? He’s a minor league rando who will go unclaimed and be back in Sacramento next week.

Melvin on his pregame show yesterday praised Burgos for his effort and said he thought Burgos would be back up with the team again. Guess he should of asked Farhan before he said anything.

He had pitched well in AAA. He’ll find a taker somewhere.

With trends like this, Giants minor leaguers should temper their excitement about being called up with the reality that getting the call might mean their days at the organization are just about over.

Birdsong AAA stats dont really excite – outside the K rate he did not show much to influence a call up

Two starters Webb and Hicks. Very desperate.

In three to four weeks, they may have six above average starting pitchers, Webb, Hicks, Ray, Cobb, Harrison and Snell. And Birdsong looked promising.

Birdsong and that changup looked nasty and he said that he’s still getting comfortable throwing it. He has a lot of polishing to do but at his age he could become a solid arm for the Giants!

Webb ain’t so great this year. We don’t have that automatic stopper.

Webb has been as good as can be expected. They put a lot of pressure on that kid with the injuries to the rotation. He will regain his stuff.

Some very questionable roster management by the Giant’s brass this year.. Entering the year with a shaky starting pitching rotation and relying on the emergence of rookies and comebacks by injured pitchers was risky. The recent few years of free agent signings have been disappointing. The J D Davis move opened a viable issue that the MLBPA will jump on during their next negotiation period. Fahran should be on a short leash.

Some very rough injuries also this year. I think the plan was always to let the rookies pitch this year. Trading for Ray and having an injured Cobb going into the season tells that story. If the Giants can get healthy, they could have a dangerous looking rotation. Just need the bats to wake up.

So all they need is some pitching and hitting

They have the pitching and they have the hitting. Pitching for the first half has been a learning curve for the club, but needed in order to see who has what in these youngsters. Hitting definitely has been underwhelming. If the Giants can keep swinging like they did against the Dodgers, they’ll be in a good spot come Ray, Snell and Cobb activations
