Braves’ Ray Kerr To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

By Anthony Franco | June 24, 2024 at 5:28pm CDT

Braves left-hander Ray Kerr will need to undergo Tommy John surgery, manager Brian Sntiker told reporters this evening (video on X via Bally Sports South). Atlanta had optioned the hard-throwing southpaw to Triple-A Gwinnett on June 15. The Braves rescinded that option this evening and placed him on the MLB injured list with the UCL issue.

Kerr will spend the rest of the year on the injured list. (The small consolation is that he’ll be paid at the prorated $740K MLB minimum rate because the injury evidently occurred before he was sent down.) Atlanta can move him to the 60-day injured list whenever they need to open a spot on the 40-man roster. They’ll either need to reinstate him onto the 40-man or put him on waivers at the start of next offseason.

The latter outcome would be particularly frustrating, but it’s possible the Braves don’t want to carry Kerr on their 40-man roster all winter. He’ll certainly be out into the second half of next year and could miss the entire ’25 campaign.

Atlanta liked Kerr enough to eat $4MM of Matt Carpenter’s $5.5MM salary in a trade with the Padres last offseason. The Braves immediately designated Carpenter for assignment and released him, so the trade was entirely about “purchasing” Kerr’s contractual rights. Atlanta even dabbled with moving Kerr to the rotation, giving him a pair of starts in late May.

Those outings didn’t go particularly well, as the 29-year-old allowed seven runs across 7 1/3 innings from the rotation. Kerr had more success in his typical bullpen role, tossing 14 2/3 innings of six-run ball. He punched out 27 hitters while issuing seven walks overall. Kerr is up to 54 1/3 frames of 5.30 ERA ball over parts of three seasons in the big leagues. He likely wouldn’t reach arbitration until the 2027 season, so the Braves could keep him around at little financial cost if they’re willing to carry him on the roster.

With a name like that, he should have been a position player.

Carp was owed 5.5M and SD included 1.5M making Kerr worth 4M. Can that even by a condo in SD’s housing market? Granted he’s a major wild-card (and 29 y/o), he’s also under team control until 2030.

We owed you for Fried and the pick from Upton that got Riley. We still owe you.

So what you’re saying is a trade adding $4M for 22.1 IP of 5.64 ERA and now TJ was a good move since the Braves got Fried 10 years ago. Ok got it. Not sure how those 2 trades are related but whateve.

Kerr has another 4 years of control at least if factoring in a typical 18-month timeline. He’s a wild card, but we’re talking about 4M. Not great right now, but there’s a lot more expensive lottery tickets.

          Glad you got it though.

Good grief dude. He just meant the Braves owed the Padres in jest for ripping them off in the previous trades. He was not trying to ‘relate’ them other than to say it’s about time the Braves didn’t fleece the Padres.

          Relax man, relax.

In fairness to Ray he wasn’t as bad as his 5 era suggest. His fip is 4. He was unlucky with a .400 babip. Era as a starter 9. Era as a reliever 3.

No idea why they made him a starter. I never seen that route. No one I talked seen that route. It’s been 5 years since he had a starters workload. Even then it was only 3 or 4 innings and just for reps as he wasn’t seen as a strong starter prospect. I wonder why he needs tj now? Can’t prove it contributed or not but I wouldn’t say it helped his arm health any being asked to do something he hasn’t done in 5 years.

It’s the only way you can put players on the 40 man on the 60 day IL to gain an additional 40 man roster spot. You can’t DFA injured players.

ACK is correct above, but I believe it was “alleged” Kerr was hurt as a member of the 26 Man, making this rescinding move mandatory as a result. While it would be a classy move by a club, nobody is going to voluntarily give somebody this amount of service credit.

You can dfa an injured player. You cannot option an injured player if the injury happened while they were on the MLB roster. Putting him on the 60 day allows them to wait till the end of the season before making a decision to tender him a 2025 contract. Since they already have $4 mill “invested” in him I would expect them to pursue 2 year minor league deal that would guarantee him $’s but keep him off the 40.

Whoa! that is an incredible resource, @Crimedog.

thank you! i’m not sure how MLB or the players union can look at that list and not immediately fund a deep study into it.

I know what the conspiracy folks will say, as well as the crowd that will go on about greed but wouldn’t you want to know what kinds of moths were eating away your money and maybe address it?

for the crowd that will talk about max effort, how do you enforce pitchers not exerting max effort?

My sentiments exactly. If the Braves want to convert him, give the poor guy some run up time and let him get used to being a starter. They screwed Kerr over and didn’t even benefit from it.

I hope Kerr comes back healthy and no matter where he pitches I hope he does well. Maybe it will be in Atlanta, but just hope he has a good comeback.

Rare L for AA. He seen a lot in this guy to make that trade, yes he throws super hard and has good k/bb numbers, but gotta get guys out. Paying a premium defeats the purpose of these diamond in the rough types.

Not much of a L at only 4m. Like I said about he had a 9 era as a starter and a 3 era as reliever. The L was trying to make him a starter. Still a very small l. Give him a W for buying prospects with $ instead if prospects. Braves don’t have the best farm system so it forces you into taking on salary trades when you can.

Not a total L since he still has 4 yrs of control left. Just a determination of if he’s worthy of a 40 spot and even then they could work out a deal that keeps him off it.

Do you consider trading away Contreras away yet as a huge loss yet? He’s got a lot more losses then you all give him credit for.

You don’t make 2 pitch guys starters, they get figured out usually the 2nd time through the lineup. His stuff is made for 1 or 2 innings of max effort. The sooner he figures that out, the better career he could have.
