Padres Place Fernando Tatis Jr. On Injured List

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | June 24, 2024 at 5:37pm CDT

Monday marked a busy day on the transaction front for the Padres. San Diego placed star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 22, with a right femoral stress reaction. The Friars also optioned outfielder José Azocar and right-hander Jhony Brito to Triple-A El Paso. Filling the three spots on the active roster: outfielder Bryce Johnson, infielder Eguy Rosario and right-hander Adam Mazur. Johnson was not on the 40-man roster, but the Friars have had a vacancy for weeks.

The Tatis injury is the biggest development. Manager Mike Shildt indicated that Tatis could play through the issue but that it wouldn’t fully heal without rest (X link via Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune). The team isn’t providing a specific return timetable, though they expect it to be longer than the minimal 10 days. It’s not out of the question that Tatis is sidelined through the All-Star Break.

Any absence is a major blow to the San Diego lineup. Tatis has been one of the top outfielders in the National League this year. He’s hitting .279/.354/.468 with 14 home runs across 345 plate appearances. Tatis has trimmed his strikeout rate to a career-low 20.6% clip while making hard contact on a massive 53.4% of batted balls. There’s no easy way to replace that kind of production.

It seems the Pads could roll with a David Peralta/Johnson platoon in right field for the time being. The lefty-swinging Peralta is only hitting .204/.306/.241 over 25 games since being called up last month. Johnson, a switch-hitter, has yet to play in the majors this season. San Diego signed the 28-year-old to a minor league deal in January. The former Giant has reached base at a massive .430 clip over 259 plate appearances with El Paso. Johnson is hitting .301 while drawing walks more than 15% of the time. He has also swiped 18 bases in 20 attempts. Johnson is in the lineup against Patrick Corbin this evening.

Mazur returns to the big leagues just three days after being optioned. (He didn’t need to wait the minimal 15 days because he is technically being recalled to replace the injured Tatis.) In actuality, he’s more directly a replacement for Yu Darvish. San Diego anticipated the right-hander returning from the injured list tomorrow. However, Heilbrunn tweets that Darvish is battling some inflammation in his throwing elbow. While Shildt downplayed the long-term concern, he won’t be ready for MLB action tomorrow.

Darvish has been out since May 30 with a strained left groin. The late revelation of a new elbow concern is suboptimal, though it doesn’t seem the Padres are especially alarmed at this point. The injury will force San Diego to turn back to the 23-year-old Mazur for his fifth big league start. The former second-round pick has allowed 14 runs over his first 17 1/3 innings. Mazur has walked more than 19% of batters faced, a bizarre issue for a pitcher who has shown pristine control in his minor league career.

Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune observed (on X) that Johnson was in the clubhouse prior to the team announcement.

“Femoral stress reaction”, that could mean he pinged a nerve, such as the femoral nerve, or it could mean that his femur pressed against a nerve elsewhere where the femur bone connects to other joints in the leg, and if one were to damage any nerves in the leg, sometimes you never regain full function of the leg as messages are not being received properly, speaking from experience. Being tall and having long bones is sometimes not advantageous when it comes to these matters.

Depends on if its a periosteal edema with microfractures but no fracture line or if its a macrofracture with a cortical fracture line visible on the MRI. The team did not say.

The team misdiagnosed the injury as a quad injury when it wasn’t. He’s essentially been playing on a serious bone stress injury since Korea, and it’s only gotten worse.

          “Cheated”

People give athletes way too much credit in these situations.

Here’s a somewhat accurate list of banned substances in the mlb
          86 performance enhancers
          50 stimulants
And these are only a fraction of the actual mlb list.

I find it funny people who don’t / can’t read food labels regarding ingredients in things they buy expect athletes to know every ingredient in stuff they take. Hell doubt you know every ingredient in a medication prescribed to you by your own doctors, probably can’t pronounce half the words accurately.

You do realize clostebol, the substance he treated positive for, is used in ringworm medication produced in countries outside the USA and Canada right?

Like you do realize other countries don’t have the same ingredients and adhere to different rules than the USA / Canada concerning drug policies and production correct?

When I lived in SD you could go down to Mexico and get stuff over the counter you’d need prescriptions for in the USA. Best stuff was advil mixed with caffeine, which you didn’t find in the USA typically. Great for hangovers.

I find it pretty weird you assume he “knowingly” cheated when The NY Times reported down in the Dominican Republic, where he’s from, you can buy multiple creams and sprays containing the banned substance -clostebol which is also called trofobol (generic drug name)- that treat a variety of ailments including ring worm.

Especially since you probably don’t even read labels of over the counter stuff yourself and you probably don’t know drugs could have totally different names but be the exact same drug.

@Joel If it was an accident as he said it was, then he did not lie. Considering the product he said he used containedbanned substance, nobody but him can say definitively whether or not he lied. So none of us know with any certainty what really happened.

          health.harvard.edu/blog/whats-in-your-supplements-…

As for athletes and taking supplements, it is very easy for athletes to take substances unknowingly. Athletes should be very cautious as it pertains to supplements as they re not regulated like prescription drugs or even food.

But again what Tatis claimed to have used for ringworm absolutely had the banned substance he tested positive for. So none of us can say 100% one way or the other what is the truth here.

So again none of us know the truth here. Only Tatis knows if the banned substance he tested positive came from the ringworm treatment or if it was taken with a product that is used for PED purposes.

But again he tested positive for a substance not the brand name of a product. And said substance is in numerous products.

He by no means lied about taking the banned substance, he in fact admitted to taking the substance. What is in question is the intent, was it in a product used in PEDs or of it was in the ringworm treatment as he claimed.

So are you grasping this yet the banned substance is essentially an ingredient not a product. He by no means lied.

I believe – while I can’t really discount your statements you did leave out one critical piece of information. Teams spend a millions on sports athletes and they are called “professionals” who have a responsibility to know what they are putting in their bodies based on their employment.

Is it harder than the typical guy – sure but it’s what they get paid to know.

Also, teams pay people to educate and assist players. All they have to do is make a call and ask – they don’t have to read the label.

Lastly, when in doubt and risking your livelihood and reputation – skip it.

@Lomgtime I absolutely agree, players have a responsibility to know especially it being their careers. Also great point about them utilizing the resources teams have available.

If I were a pro athlete I’d definitely be ultra vigilant. Id also only consume half of any supplement product I purchased and save the other half much like saving tax documents in the event of an audit. That way if something came up I’d have proof of what I had taken and it would be available for testing in the oft chance it had ingredients not listed or that it was not intended to have.

Seeing as supplements are loosely regulated and inadequate oversight, I’d be surprised if teams aren’t providing them for players or providing testing on Amy players purchase themselves.

Kind of scaring thing about supplements many are made in China. There was an instance not that far back where tainted imported pet food killed a bunch of dogs. The supplements coming from there have basically the same oversight and it’s possible with those as well. Not very likely but still possible, but brings the question do the supplements even provide the benefits they claim.

As for Tatis, I find his story very suspect. However we ll likely never know the truth of his intent. Will be interesting if yrs from now he has HOF worthy #s how his case will be viewed. To me I believe his Dad and those representing him were doing damage control for his image currently and/or in the future.

It is possible though he truly was trying to treat ringworm. This is a guy who frequently is in lockerrooms and clubhouses with other athletes or others training where ringworm is prevalent. He’s also a young man in his early 20s whereas probably wouldn’t even put thought to grabbing a common over the counter topical cream for something common. However, as you pointed out for such things players should be more vigilant. But we were all young and dumb once.

Drugs can have completely different names and be the exact same drug.

For example, antidepressant fluoxetine is also known by the brand names Prozac, Prozep, Olena, and Oxactin

Drugs can also have generic names, which are created to be identical to brand-name drugs in terms of dosage, strength, safety, and intended use. However, generic drugs are usually required to look different from brand-name drugs due to trademark laws, so they may differ in color, shape, or size. For example, the generic version of Adderall is amphetamine salt combo, and the generic version of Glucophage is metformin.

So if your proof he knowingly cheated is he called it a different name that’s not really proof since drugs can have different names and be the exact same drug.

Again. You assume he lied cause he called it a different name. And you’ve been presented fact after fact that drugs can be called different names and be the exact same drug.

So no. Calling it a different name doesn’t 100% mean he lied. It could mean he took what he said he took and was unaware it was the same as clostebol, also called trofobol (same drug).

Your statement leaves out significant cultural differences regarding drug production and control longtimecoming.

Unlike in the U.S., steroids are legal in the Dominican and can be obtained without a prescription and can be found in over the counter medications.

Your statement would make sense if it’s something a dominican doctor prescribed him instead of say a team doctor, but doesn’t make much sense if you go to the equivalent of 711 or cvs or rite aid and grab something over the counter.

Why would Tatis Jr or any foreign born assume over the counter meds contain banned substances by the mlb (majority of banned substances if not all are controlled substances in the USA)? Seems a little far fetched to say he knowingly took a banned substances when

          1. Drugs have different names and the mlb list doesn’t cover every single name a drug has (if it did the list would be well over 200 or more pages long probably).
          2. His home country puts said substance in over the counter medication you can stop in, grab some, and walk out without a prescription.

Please don’t try to tell me that a professional athlete in the US gets a pass on following the rules because they grew up in another country.

There are educational tools in place.

I have no comment on his intent because I can’t read his mind. I’m just saying any professional is expected to know the rules or at least utilize the resources available to avoid “oops, I didn’t know what was in there.”

If you don’t know, I’m a 45 year Padres fan and always post on her for Padres support but he should have known better or taken steps to avoid.

I believe it may have been a mistake or an “oops” but it is t an intent then.

I’ve never used the “cheater” label – don’t put me there.

Nobody said pass on the rules. He tested positive, he served his suspension.

But it’s pretty ignorant to assume he was lying about ringworm medication when independent sources have confirmed numerous times the Dominican Republic does use the substance he tested positive for in medication available over the counter to treat things including ringworm. You know you can walk in, pick it up, walk out.

It’s also pretty ignorant to think the rules regarding drugs in the USA (heavily controlled heavily monitored) are the same everywhere. They’re not.

          “Educational tools in place”
It’s not a lack education. It’s a cultural difference that’s the issue. Again. Why would any player in a foreign country think over the counter medication they’ve probably used since they were kids contains banned substances (prescription required or illegal drugs per the mlb rules)? And what exactly does the MLB do to educate foreign born players about different drugs rules in their home countries? Giving people a list and expecting them to contact a hotline hoping someone speaks their native language about questions regarding stuff they’re allowed to purchase at cbs is a severely flawed system.

Normal people wouldn’t assume over the counter meds contains banned substances. If I went to another country and bought stuff over the counter I wouldn’t assume it contained prescription required in USA drugs. Neither would you or any commenter in this thread, so how do we expect athletes to know in foreign countries?

And what exactly does the MLB do to educate foreign born players about differences in drug policies between the USA and their home countries?

See. If the mlb was smart they’d create an app that can scan any drug in any language and it’d tell athletes if it contains a banned substance and which one.

Suggesting foreign born players who speak foreign languages and buy products in foreign languages contact someone and check every ingredient listed on said product is such a flawed system if you’re checking 10+ products

It sounds like the mlb needs to do a better job personally.

Tatis has shown a pattern of reckless behavior. It’s not just the steroid use. He was in a motorcycle accident in the offseason prior. He slept with the same girl that accused Trevor Bauer of domestic violence it’s public record.

Bauer got a massive 190 something game suspension for being accused of a crime that he was never charged with. Tatis got 80 games for cheating. Does that make any sense?

@JoeBrady. Don’t think it’s “stupid”, but I do think that in an article announcing a serious injury to Tatis, potentially season-ending, that to instead come in and not talk about the injury and instead whine on about him being a cheater just seems piling on at the wrong time. It’s weird, and maybe not the best showing of dignity by fans. Tatis has been stellar since 2022, a great player who plays hard and is a good teammate. Maybe we can put his past mistake aside in the face of some really bad news?

@Blackpink/Joel Nobody is denying he cheated, he himself admitted to taking the substance. What’s at question is whether it was in a ringworm cream as he stated or in a product tailored as a PED.

You re on here babbling that “he 100% lied”. He flat out admitted to using a product with the banned substance. He might ve lied as to how he had used that substance and whether or not it was deliberate, but that we ll likely never know.

Only from corticosteroids such as prednisone which are totally legal for players to get. MLB would not even blink if a player got a corticosteroid injection. Anabolic steroids do not have that potential side effect.

Brew with his history, I’m just waiting for the names to be provided. There is no way the deadline passes without adding a SP and maybe a RP.

Although, you could argue using Vasquez for 6th or 7th might solve the short term R RP issue – assuming Yu comes back and they add a SP.

I think that role might ultimately be his path unless he can learn to avoid the big inning.

Hey LT. Yeah I don’t see them not signing a SP and RP, and depending upon the medium term health of Darvish (we no so little about the severity of the elbow issue), they might seek 2 SPs. The present RPs are not doing great but they’re also overworked because only SPs ( other than Waldron) rarely get to the 6th inning. And with Tati out for an extended period, it wouldn’t surprise me if AJ trades for a rental OF. This could happen any day now. $12M to work with and I’d be nervous if I was Lesko or Snelling.

steroids to get back faster is cheating just the same as steroids to make yourself stronger or faster. im not here to say if the young man cheated, but it was a bad look for him to not own up to a mistake especially if it legitimately was a mistake. tatis has lost all accountability from me just because he claimed he didnt know anything, if he had said i should have taken more care in what medications i was using then there would be way less discussion about this, but instead he said i had ringworm so to me all credibility is lost

While the injuries suck, the depth of this team has been a fantastic silver lining thus far this year. I am happy to see Brito get stretched out for starter innings (I was hoping for this earlier in the season, but maybe this was a better way to manage the innings load between him and Vasquez). Eguy has turned a corner in AAA, and it looks like he can be a solid RH bench piece, hopefully for years to come. I don’t have a ton of expectations for Mazur and Johnson; they. just need to hold down the fort in the interim. Hopefully, the Padres can snag a couple of mid-leverage BP arms and a backend starter for this year’s stretch run. Otherwise, the team looks solid.

@straight up. A lot of positive vibes after the Nats series, let’s hope they can do well in the upcoming road trip. They’re going to need to address the BP, and figure out the OF if Tatis is truly out 2 months or more. Good news from last night regarding tests on Yu – seems as though no real issues with his elbow. But I’ll believe it when I see him string a start or two together. Sure would be amazing to have him for 10-15 starts rest of season. I like Eguy also but not sure where he plays, maybe RF? haha.. Solano and Wade aren’t going anywhere. I was at the game Tuesday night, maybe the best game I’ve seen in years.

What a great game to go to! I went to two Monday games on a whim this year: the 8-0 comeback against the Cubs and the 4-run extra inning win against the Nats. I’ve seen my share of stinkers over the years, but I feel like I could ride the high of those two wins for the rest of the year.

I think Tatis will be fine. Just needs some rest; all the batted ball metrics are saying he’s damn near back to 2021 levels. Darvish and Musgrove will be the big ?s this year. Maybe too optimistic to get both back, but certainly I hope they can have at least one be effective coming back from the IL. OF otherwise looks very strong with Profar/Merrill.. Johnson/Peralta/Wade just have to play solid with the glove and not embarass themselves with the bat and they’ll be okay.
