Latest On Mason Miller’s Trade Market

By Anthony Franco | July 19, 2024 at 7:56pm CDT

There’s no bigger target on the relief market than A’s breakout closer Mason Miller. The All-Star righty begins the second half with a 2.27 earned run average through 39 2/3 innings. He has punched out 70 of 150 opponents (an absurd 46.7% rate) while locking down 15 of 17 save chances. Miller might be the most dominant relief force in the league at the moment.

Oakland general manager David Forst will receive no shortage of trade calls over the next week and a half. Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote last night that the Orioles are among the teams with interest in Miller. Heyman adds that Baltimore also remains connected to old friend Tanner Scott, to whom they’ve been linked for the better part of two months. The O’s are generally expected to land a high-leverage reliever who can either supplant Craig Kimbrel as closer or bridge the gap to the ninth inning.

The Marlins will almost certainly deal Scott, an impending free agent, by July 30. It’d be significantly harder to pry Miller from the A’s. He’s under club control for five seasons after this one. Even a rebuilding team is under no pressure to move him. Robert Murray of FanSided wrote this evening that executives outside of Oakland remain skeptical that the A’s will deal Miller. They’ll have an exorbitant asking price, at the very least.

Miller’s injury history is the main argument for the A’s to move him this summer. The 25-year-old missed most of the 2022 season battling shoulder problems. He lost the bulk of the ’23 campaign to a UCL sprain in his elbow. Miller throws as hard as anyone in baseball and has had a pair of extended arm-related absences within the last three years. There’s clearly some level of risk that he suffers another injury. The A’s are unlikely to be competitive before the 2026 season at the earliest, so Miller could make more of an immediate impact on a team with nearer playoff aspirations.

Yet as appealing as Miller already is as an elite closer, there’s a chance he improves his value even more in the next year or two. Miller was a starting pitcher in the minors and for his first few weeks in the big leagues. Oakland moved him to the bullpen this year as a means of keeping his innings in check. Forst said at the time of the bullpen transfer that the A’s might stretch Miller back out as a starter in 2025. It’d be tempting to keep him in the bullpen now that the team has seen how dominant he is in that role, but no one has ruled out a return to starting. Miller told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale last week that he’s not closing off the possibility of moving back to the rotation in ’25 or beyond.

Garrett Crochet has dramatically elevated his trade value with three months of ace production. There’s no guarantee Miller would take to a rotation move the way that Crochet has, of course, but it’s not hard to see the potential for him to be an impact starter. If he ran with a rotation opportunity next season, he’d further elevate his stock both within the organization and on the trade market.

I mean considering what the Braves gave up for Matt Olson, i think any team in baseball has enough mediocre single A prospects to package with an average reliever in AAA to get anyone off the A’s roster

Difference here is that Olson had put in a few years and was about to get Paid real Money.

Miller is a Rookie making essentially Minimum Wage for the next couple of years. Less reason to trade him away, even for our Cheap A$$ owner.

“Enough prospects to get him”…The A’s have been fleeced by the Braves so many times, I doubt the A’s would even return their phone calls. You can only fool people so many times and I believe the Oakland A’s have set the record in this respect.

also the fact that, this scenario being a trade with Oakland, would mean that the Braves would give up about 1/4 of what his value actually is

        b) on the IL until after the deadline

Miller meets Boston’s needs. Imagine a bullpen of Jansen, Miller and Martin with Hendricks coming back in August or September. Next season they could move Miller up to the rotation and send Whitlock back to the bullpen for good. I’d trade Grissom and Meyer for him…..

The Mariners are absolutely loaded with propects and have the #1 farm system. Although most of the trading will be done to acquire offense, it would be nice to have another closer to pair with Muñoz and to replace Brash for the end of games.

Those others are also way better rating publications. The Bleacher Report is not a go-to for prospects. They do monthly updates with wild fluctuations month-to-month. That’s not how prospects are evaluated because it indicates an evaluation problem.

Regardless, it doesn’t matter if a system is rated 1st or 15th. It comes down to what’s offered and how the A’s, in the case of Miller, likes or doesn’t like the prospects.

So, sure, the Mariners could win a bidding war by offering a package of prospects. I doubt they’d depleted their system though.

Boston would have the best back end of the bullpen in baseball if they can swing it. Hendricks will be back, Martin, Miller, then Jansen….It would take a lot but I think Grissom, Martin, and Meyer could do it….all 3 major league ready

Chris Martin….I wouldn’t add him immediately, only as a last ditch effort but he’s a veteran that if the trade is done early enough Oakland can flip to another team for another prospect if they prefer. I’d try a couple minor league arms first though to match up with MLB ready Grissom and near MLB ready Mayer

Heres a crazy idea. They have some interesting pieces, moving to Sacramento how about actually trying to be good next year. But we know that won’t happen . Also will be hard to convince free agents to play in a AAA stadium for 3 yrs with ridiculous hot weather and turf

The smart move would be to move him, so of course you know the A’s will hold on to him instead until he gets injured and his value plummets and they eventually dump him for pennies on the dollar.

Why would you pay for the chance Miller becomes Crochet when you can buy Crochet for less?

The premium for an extra 3 pre-arb years of an injury prone RP (Miller) isn’t nearly worth Crochet’s proven success and extra year of buildup as an SP.

Miller is having one good year.
He is due for regression in the future.

Teams are not going to give away their farms system
for a relief pitcher with no track record halfway through his 1st good year.

How much did he pitch in HS?
    College?

This is a very risky trade if a team is giving up top prospects for Miller.

Crochet is a reliever converting to his 1st year as a starter.
He has had injuries and is on an innings limit.
He has already pitched more innings in the 1st Half of ’24
than he has pitched his entire career.
He will be in the bullpen in the 2nd half and is in danger of a major injury for overworking him his 1st year as a starter.

I am sure that Front Offices looking at either of these pitchers
are wary of giving up too much for either one of them with their very short track records and considering the epidemic of pitching injuries going around.

Yes and this is why I’m glad the Red Sox drafted pitching this year. These guys are great when they’re young but what a crapshoot as they get older. The whole lot of them.

You go after the great free agent arms and half of them crap out and you still owe the money.

Draft pitching all day long and depend on them when they’re young before they get hurt. You can always trade for position players or sign free agents to plug the holes.

I’d probably make a bad GM but… Millers asking price is likely to be insane. He’s also likely to tear his labrum or have his lower arm rip off from his elbow in less than 2 years. He’s worth a global top 100 prospect, a team top 10 guy, and an intriguing rookie league player, anything more I’d pass.

Amazing 2/3 of a season, but this dude has a checkered injury history and a high torque arm action. You give up your best 2 prospects for him and you could easily be left high and dry at any time. I don’t think the ask and the willingness to give are gonna match on him. Some other good relievers out there.

Not saying the O’s won’t make changes – they will. But they’re not the team to give up the farm for ANYONE. They’ll be safe and conservative and add a third starter and a really good middle reliever. The gold mine farm they have is due to this protective attitude. A history of injuries does not get you the O’s begging on the phone. In some ways, I admire the protectionism, but the lack of balls can be frustrating.

It would be a waste to turn Miller into a starter. If Mariano Rivera was turned back into a starter after closing games with success, he would most likely not be in the hall of fame and the Yankees win a couple less World Series. He’d probably be closer to someone like Michael Pineda or Ervin Santana. If its not broken, don’t fix it. His arm is going to blow out throwing that hard for so many innings

I’m hearing the A’s want multiple prospects for Miller, not necessarily a top 50 prospect as has been reported. The Phillies farm system boasts 5 top 100 prospects, plus some intriguing top 25 organizational prospects like George Klassen, Samuel Aldegheri & Jean Cabrera. They also have some positional players like Bryan Rincones, William Bergolla and Carlos de la Cruz that are blocked at the MLB level. Why not try to package 5 or 6 of those guys with a top 100 like Mick Abel and go get Miller & Brent Rooker? All the prospects I mentioned are at least 22 years old (except Bergolla). It’s World Series or bust for the Phillies and they are making a push for both players.

Miller is already in his mid-20s, has problematic medicals, and is a one-inning reliever for a team that won’t be in contention for years. They don’t have to move him, but they should for a package of prospects.
