Mariners Select Seby Zavala, Sign Chris Devenski

By Darragh McDonald | July 2, 2024 at 5:45pm CDT

The Mariners announced that they have selected the contract of catcher Seby Zavala, with left-hander Jhonathan Díaz optioned to Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move. Additionally, the M’s have signed right-hander Chris Devenski to a major league contract, though Devenski will report to Tacoma. Seattle had three vacancies on their 40-man roster coming into today, so their count is now at 39.

Zavala, 30, was acquired as part of the Eugenio Suárez trade back in November. He was used as a glove-first backup catcher for a while with Cal Raleigh getting the bulk of the playing time. The M’s had also signed Mitch Garver but with the idea of using him primarily as a designated hitter, though Garver started playing behind the plate more as the season wore on.

That left just 43 plate appearances for Zavala through the middle of June. He hit .154/.214/.282 in that limited time while striking out at a 37.2% rate. As Garver started donning the tools of ignorance, Zavala was designated for assignment and outrighted off the roster. He had the right to elect free agency at that time but stuck with the M’s and is now back in the bigs.

His selection is likely due to Garver’s status, as he was hit by a pitch on his right wrist on Sunday. He was catching that game with Raleigh in the DH slot, but Raleigh moved behind the plate in the third inning as Garver departed, leaving the M’s to play without a DH for the rest of the game.

Per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com on X, Garver is feeling better but still sore and is “going to go feel it out,” in Garver’s words. Since he is seemingly unavailable, at least for a few days, the club was going to be left with just Raleigh and no backup catcher, which prompted Zavala’s return. Once Garver is healthy, Zavala might get squeezed out again since he is out of options.

Devenski, 33, was just released by the Rays last week but has quickly landed a new gig. As a veteran with more than five years of service time, he can’t be optioned to the minors without his consent. Since the M’s announced that he will report to Tacoma, perhaps he has given his consent, unless that’s just an on-paper move until he reports to the club.

The righty was having a rough season with the Rays, tossing 26 2/3 innings with 6.75 earned runs allowed per nine. His 19.7% strikeout rate and 11.5% walk rate were both below average, leading Tampa to cut him loose.

The M’s clearly have some kind of idea for getting him back on track. He was once a dominant reliever with the Astros, throwing 189 innings with that club over 2016 and 2017 with a 2.35 ERA, 28.2% strikeout rate and 6.4% walk rate. But he struggled in the following years and missed time due to injuries, including Tommy John surgery. He had a 4.56 ERA over 2018 and 2019 and then a 9.47 ERA from 2020 to 2022.

He seemed to show a bit of life last year, with 42 1/3 innings between the Angels and Rays. He had a 4.46 ERA in that time, as well as a 24.3% strikeout rate and 6.4% walk rate. The Rays were encouraged enough to bring him back for 2024 with a $1.1MM guarantee, in the form of a $1MM salary this year and $100K buyout on a 2025 option.

But now that Devenski has been released, the Rays are left on the hook for that money. The M’s will only owe him the prorated version of the major league minimum for any time spent on the roster, with that amount subtracted from what the Rays pay.

The M’s have taken some hits in their bullpen this year, with each of Matt Brash, Gregory Santos, Jackson Kowar and Gabe Speier currently on the injured list, with Brash and Kowar done for the year due to Tommy John surgery. There’s little harm on taking a low-cost flier on Devenski to see if he can help make up for those losses by returning to form.

What do teams see in Devenski? He hasn’t been even passable since 2018 and good since 2017.

To be fair, nobody’s been all that good on the Mariners in the past two weeks. Might as well throw Devenski at the wall and see if he sticks.

How many Mariners fans were enjoying a drink while reading this post and suddenly sprayed their beverage into the air followed by a choking fit when they saw Zavala was being recalled? I know I would.

Zavala is just up until Garver able to catch occasionally again. How many teams have a good 3rd catcher on their 40 man roster stashed in minors?

Zavala isn’t a 3rd catcher, he doesn’t even deserve to be on a major league affiliate in the minors

All he did was strike out this year, every time he came up he was a free out almost as bad as Austin hedges but at least hedges is a great defender

You clearly don’t know how low the bar is to be a 3rd string catcher.

How many other freely available players fit the following:
          1. Combination of offense + defense at C to be viable at AAA
          2. Freely available to stash in AAA (ie with options/ happy to be in that org’s AAA team)
          3. Little-to-no concern about development as a prospect
          3. Willing as a player to be either up-and-down or never up

If you think having a Zavala-quality Catcher is bad as a 3rd string, then you’ve refused to remember the several times we’ve had worse as our 1st string.

Well in fairness to Zavala, the entire Ms lineup has been striking out all year. Not just Selby. After tonight’s 11k, high voltage offensive showing, scoring a fat zero, the Ms lead baseball with 888 team strikeouts. ” Control The Zone “. Blah blah blah.

No Mariners fan that saw Garver getting plonked on the wrist would be surprised at the Zavala call up. The recent Blake Hunt trade further cemented Zavala as Garvers automatic emergency replacement.

Re: Devenski ….any M’s fans that has followed the team like I have will have seen Devenski completely shut down our lineups. He was a nemesis and rally killer for so many of our Mariners lineups.

So…When his name came up on MLBTR I know I was not the only M’s fan that thought- I wonder if this M’s Pitching Dev Group that has a reputation of helping RPers find the best version of themselves, could do that again, with him.

Injuries have made this version of the 2024 M’s BP rather thin with options from the 6th inning onwards. TBH chances are, they will still be thin after this acquisition. The team/BP is waiting for Gregory Santos and Gabe Speier to finish their rehabs. It won’t hurt to see if this low cost low risk Devenski move could somehow help them in the meantime.

If the team was currently 12 games out of the 3rd AL wildcard Jerry would still make this move right now.

This is not a move to help them fight for the Division Title per se, it’s a “right place-right time” move that could happen at any time of the year. It just happens to be an administrative move that is done near the deadline date. It is not a “Trade Deadline” move. It is just convenient timing for people who get satisfaction from trolling Ms fans.

Don’t forget he went right to mlb from high school. You can’t compare minor league game numbers to players who went to college ball.

You don’t bring up Ford to just sit on the bench and you’re not benching Cal. Your only other option would be to DH Cal and play Ford at catcher… but then you’re in the same exact situation as you were when you risked playing both of your catchers. Ford just wouldn’t have made sense in this situation.

A 10 game cup of coffee would probably help his development and if he’s so bad at the majors during those 10 than that’s why we have seby

Or can really screw him up with the pressure he might put on himself. Better off let him continue his development. We will see him in 2025 as a regular imo.

Have totally made peace with the reality that the Astros will likely be in first place by the end of the week. But that’s okay; doesn’t mean they will stay there. Always envisioned this season to be a dogfight all the way to the end.

This organization is built around families having “fun” at the ballpark talking about how great the prospects in the minor leagues are and making a profit..Until us fans boycott the games and demand they put a winning playoff contending team on a yearly basis we will have bargain basement pickups and cost cutting moves every year…Gross

I am hoping they will make a trade for a couple of bats that put the ball in play more. Like Isaac Parades of the Rays and/or Ryan McMahon of the Rockies and attempt to get a reliever in the deal as well. I would not mind if the the M’s tried to get both as Parades has played first base quite a bit. Need two bats not just one….
