Pirates, Jose Rojas Agree To Minor League Deal

By Anthony Franco | July 25, 2024 at 6:17pm CDT

The Pirates are in agreement with Jose Rojas on a minor league contract, tweets Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He was assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Rojas, 31, has 83 games of MLB experience. That came entirely with the Angels between 2021-22. He struggled to a .188/.245/.339 slash line while striking out at a 28.6% clip across 241 plate appearances. Rojas hasn’t gotten to the big leagues in the past two years, but he has had a nice year in Triple-A. After signing an offseason minor league deal with the Yankees, he hit .254/.359/.561 with 18 home runs over 67 games for their top affiliate in Scranton. The Yankees nevertheless didn’t buy into his form, as they released him a couple weeks ago rather than add him to a struggling MLB infield.

A left-handed hitter, Rojas owns a .273/.346/.532 slash in nearly 1500 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. He’s capable of playing all four corner positions and has some second base experience. Rojas has primarily played the corner infield spots in the minors. He adds a versatile lefty bat as non-roster depth to the Pittsburgh system.

Given his offensive numbers, he’ll fit right in and may get a start soon

not mentioned here but they traded an outfielder that had been assigned to Altoona to the Cubs for cash considerations

Yeah, there’s one of those deals Big Ben said he was able to make right now. I gave him the benefit of the doubt for a while as this is a cheap team but his lack of urgency is really starting to frustrate me. They will have a very weak trade deadline, probably get rid of 1-2 bench players, low tier starters (Bae, Pegeuro), complain about the asking prices, meanwhile the Padres, Cardinals, and Mets will all acquire impact players without hurting their farm or losing top prospects. Prove me wrong please.

I’m actually hoping they do nothing
All it’s going to take to get a WC berth is to be around .500. They can do that without trading prospects or bringing in guys who are salary dumps
They’re likely a season away from doing any kind of real damage as their young players mature. Stand pat. Shock the world and sign a bat or two this off season. And steer clear of the dumpster this season

They’ll sit back and pick up whoever no one wants. Could get something good. Arizona just got Puk for a bargain. Maybe someone falls in love with Pirates weaker prospects. If not rentals are fine.

I agree, holecamels35, there’s no urgency to improve this team by Cherington
Had he been truly serious about being contenders, he wouldn’t be wasting until the last week of the trading deadline to make any moves

The other day, BC said that he was happy with the current players and believes in them?
Really? He’s happy that they are near the bottom in runs scored? Happy they are last in the league in batting average? Second in strikeouts?

Cherington must think all fans are blind to the failures of this team’s offense

Jose rakes in any level except for the MLB. Worth bringing in to get a closer look

It just a minor league deal but really doesn’t need to do much to improve the offense so he’ll probably get a week or two worth of games pending any other moves.

Rojas is likely the replacement as AAA depth for Palacios who’s out of options and will surely be DFA’d by deadline day.

Putting Bae on the taxi squad (most likely replacing Reynolds who is on the bereavement list) and opening up another slot at AAA by trading Gilberto Celestine to the Cubs a few hours ago, set up some room for Rojas. Good depth move. I thought the Pirates would have went after Jackie Bradley Jr. after his stint with the Ducks, but the Mets grabbed him first.

And there is your big deadline move by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bob Nutting rummages around his car for some spare change to buy a cheap minor leaguer. Get ready for the Chapman salary dump.

Wow…. Mariners give up a couple of middling prospects for a very good OF bat and BC couldn’t do any better?

I really hope he has a plan for the deadline because any team with Suwinski and Palacios listed as starters isn’t sniffing the playoffs (MAT too but I still give him a pass as a 5th OF with speed & D).

Skenes will likely win NLROY so there’s only four seasons left after this and they’ll be shopping him prior to the last one.

Three years left Ben – do something!
