Pirates Acquire Jalen Beeks From Rockies

By Anthony Franco | July 29, 2024 at 8:16pm CDT

The Pirates announced the acquisition of lefty reliever Jalen Beeks from the Rockies for minor league reliever Luis Peralta. Pittsburgh had an open spot on their 40-man roster after this afternoon’s trade with the Red Sox.

Colorado claimed Beeks off waivers from the Rays over the winter. Tampa Bay was evidently not planning to tender him a contract for his final season of arbitration. Rather than allow him to hit the market, Colorado took a flier and agreed to a modest $1.675MM salary. Beeks has had a generally productive season. He’s second on the Rox with 49 1/3 innings out of the bullpen and has pitched in their highest-leverage spots overall.

Beeks has worked to a 4.74 ERA in 45 appearances. He’s carrying a career-low 18% strikeout rate and 9.2% swinging strike percentage. Beeks has a league average 8.5% walk percentage and 44.7% grounder rate. He somewhat bizarrely had far more success at Coors Field than he did on the road for the Rox.

A former 12th round pick of the Red Sox, Beeks had a solid run as a long reliever for Tampa Bay between 2019-22. He combined for a 3.70 ERA with average strikeout and walk numbers in 184 2/3 frames over that stretch. Beeks allowed nearly six earned runs per nine last season, though, leading the Rays to move on.

Pittsburgh plugs him behind Aroldis Chapman as the second lefty in Derek Shelton’s bullpen. They’re assuming roughly $500K in salary for the stretch run. Beeks will surpass the six-year service threshold in September and hit free agency at the beginning of the offseason. Colorado didn’t have much incentive to keep him, so they’ll cash him in for an intriguing bullpen prospect.

Peralta, 23, is the younger brother of Brewers staff ace Freddy Peralta. The 5’11” southpaw signed with Pittsburgh out of the Dominican Republic in 2017. Peralta has divided his season between High-A and Double-A, turning in a 0.91 ERA over 39 2/3 innings. He’s striking out an eye-opening 41% of batters faced against an elevated 11.5% walk rate. Baseball America had Peralta as the #24 prospect in the Pittsburgh system, writing that he relies heavily on a mid-90s fastball with good life at the top of the strike zone. He’d be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter if Colorado doesn’t select him onto the 40-man roster.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand first reported the terms of the deal. Image courtesy of USA Today Sports.

Beeks is pretty solid. Miscast as a closer but solid lefty and he gets outs, basically one of only two Rockies relievers who can. He’s far better than Nick Mears, who went yesterday.

          Nothing screams solid like a 5 ERA & 18% K rate

But ya he’ll be the lefty after they dump Chapman for another minor leaguer

Palacios is not a lead off hitter and he shouldn’t have even been in the game. I get that Shelton wanted to shake up the lineup but he isn’t a prototype every day player
They never take advantage of Bae’s speed which would have made him a better choice for lead off

But both are injured and it seems Bae has been injury prone this year.

If both he and Palacios go on the IL, Ben will be under pressure to fill 2 outfield positions before 6 pm tomorrow

It’s not because of Coors. He has been awful regardless of the stadium. There is a reason the Rockies got him on the waiver wire in the offseason. The only time he has been good is against lefties. But if he is going to turn it around, Pittsburgh is not a bad place to try. If Pitt tries to make he a late inning guy, they will fail. But if they make him a modern LOOGY, it could work out well. Good luck to you guys.

I’d think it’s more a LH replacement/placeholder for Borucki.. I’m a bit annoyed Beeks cost Peralta, but it’s not a completely irresponsible move by Cherington if he’s really thinking Bucs are contending. A second LHP in pen is very useful. That said, once Falter returns either Perez or Gonzalez goes to pen, so there’d be 3 lefties. And once Jones returns, four. So Beeks would seem to be a very short term plug.

Fair win now trade. Peralta could be a good one. Needs to improve his command but the slider is there and quality. Fastball is ready. At worst he is a lefty specialist. Beeks already is that lefty specialist and can do better with RHB with a change of mix and scenery. For the prices relievers are getting this isn’t a bad deal.

Solid add to sure up the bullpen depth after Fleming elected free-agency. Beeks is better than Fleming and they needed a consistent, solid lefty with Borucki looking to be out longer than we all had hoped.

Not a huge needle mover, but a move that was needed. Solid baseball trade when you’re trying to compete.

Deadline isn’t over. See what they do. It’s a weird deadline. Rays just gave 300 something average Rosario to LA for free. No one wanted him? Maybe to repay LA for their generosity of giving the Cards a good starter for this year and next and good outfielder for completely free. Yet most trades have been massive over pays. Brewers got a #4 starter just by taking on salary. Everyone is getting better but the Pirates.

Shouldn’t matter to you. You keep saying good players won’t make a difference. Poor Paul though must be devastated. Got his vip membership. All ready to get Winker and win division.

Pirates player development is awful. Maybe position player scouting as well. Mariners keep making trades and like everyone has a outfielder taken in the 6th round that’s a better outfield prospect that we have had since Meadows.

Sellers are loading up farm systems. Unreal the talent going out. It really is a good deadline for Cherington to sit out.

I have trashed Pirates development. It’s worse than I thought. Will now throw scouting under the bus as well. They can’t find 1 hidden gm thats so good that their awful development can’t fail to develop?

Prices should come down tomorrow. Everyones traded so many prospects they can’t afford to trade much more. There are still 40 quality players that should be dealt. Not all will but 20 to 30 could. See what Ben does. Hate to destroy the guy but Seattle Baltimore are just so so good and the Pirates have to be too. Ben can’t even develop elite top of the 1st round hitters and Seattle is pulling them in the 6th round.

Good players CAN make a difference. You keep missing the point that here, they need more than just GOOD players. It won’t move the needle to truly augment their core to a point where they are real contenders
No. All it will do will be to keep them around .500 or a couple games above. In your way of thinking, that’s fine. Playoffs. Anyone has a chance
Me, I think of the great Pirates teams of the Hurdle and Leyland eras. No, they didn’t win it all but they were among the best and their GMs were proactive in addressing needs
Nutting is one thing. Might as well be a politician with his comments. A scumbag who wants to bathe in cash. A profiteer. Nothing more
But Cherington is the worst GM they’ve had in some time. Yes, bad scouting department and worse player development, but I have to wonder if they even watch games. It’s a joke. A sick joke on fans
