Cardinals Acquire Fedde, Pham; Dodgers Acquire Edman, Kopech In Three-Team Deal With White Sox

By Steve Adams | July 29, 2024 at 3:23pm CDT

What’s a trade deadline without a convoluted three-team swap? The Cardinals, White Sox and Dodgers have announced a three-team, eight-player deal (possibly including up to 10 players) that breaks down as follows:

  • Cardinals receive: right-hander Erick Fedde, outfielder Tommy Pham (both from White Sox), PTBNL or cash (from Dodgers), cash (from White Sox)
  • Dodgers receive: right-hander Michael Kopech (from White Sox), infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (from Cardinals), right-hander Oliver Gonzalez (from Cardinals)
  • White Sox receive: infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas, minor league infielder Alexander Albertus, minor league infielder Jeral Perez, PTBNL or cash (all from Dodgers)

It’s a massive exchange of veteran names that’ll have significant postseason implications for a pair of National League contenders. The Cardinals, in need of rotation help and a right-handed bat, checked two boxes with today’s swap, while the Dodgers added some needed positional versatility to help cover multiple weak spots in the lineup and a hard-throwing reliever with an extra season of club control.

Starting with the Cardinals, they’ll bolster their starting staff not just this season but also in 2025. Fedde, a former first-round pick and top prospect with the Nationals, flamed out in five seasons here in MLB before heading to the KBO’s NC Dinos for one year. He spent the 2023 season in South Korea, added a splitter and changed the shape of his breaking ball, and dominated KBO opponents en route to an MVP Award. He returned to MLB on a two-year, $15MM deal with the White Sox and has immediately established himself as a new and highly improved pitcher.

In 121 2/3 innings for the ChiSox, Fedde has pitched to a sharp 3.11 ERA. His 21.5% strikeout rate is shy of league-average by one percentage point, but his 6.8% walk rate is strong and his 44.7% grounder rate is also a bit better than average. He’s avoided hard contact (88.1 mph average exit velocity, 36% hard-hit rate) and kept opponents off balance with a four-pitch mix including a cutter, sinker, slider and split-changeup.

Fedde solidifies the back of a veteran Cardinals rotation that has been without lefty Steven Matz (back strain) since late April. The Cards have been relying on righty Andre Pallante to help patch things over, and while he’s been a godsend in that role (3.42 ERA in nine starts), the 25-year-old is also already just four innings shy of his 2023 total and can be a vital piece in the bullpen as well.

The addition of Fedde will prove vital for a Cardinals club that only had three starters signed through the 2025 season as well. Sonny Gray is being paid $25MM annually from 2024-26, while Miles Mikolas is owed $20MM next year. Matz will be in the fourth and final season of his own $44MM contract next year, but his ongoing health troubles make it tough to bank on him. The Cardinals hold club options over veterans Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson, but neither is a lock to be picked up. Fedde, owed $7.5MM this year and next, gives the Cardinals some long-term stability at a highly affordable rate.

In addition to their desired rotation upgrade, the Cards will get the right-handed bat they’ve been seeking. It’ll come in the form of a reunion with Pham, whom they originally selected in the 16th round of the 2006 draft. Pham made his big league debut with the 2014 Cardinals and spent the next three-plus seasons in St. Louis before being traded to the Rays in a deal that brought Genesis Cabrera and Justin Williams back to the Cardinals.

Pham, now 36, has since played for six additional teams. The Rays traded him Padres after two seasons, and he’s since signed free-agent deals with the Reds, Mets and White Sox — getting traded at the deadline in three consecutive seasons. Pham has remained productive at the plate even as he’s become a year-to-year mercenary in his mid-30s. He slashed .256/.328/.446 between the Mets and D-backs in 2023 and owns a .266/.330/.380 output in 297 plate appearances with the White Sox.

Pham won’t receive everyday at-bats in his return to Busch Stadium, but Pham’s hefty .255/.377/.471 line against lefties will make him a useful part-time player for manager Oli Marmol. He’ll make for a nice platoon partner for glove-first center fielder Michael Siani (with Pham presumably taking over in left field and Lars Nootbaar manning center against southpaws).

In order to open a 40-man roster spot, the Cardinals designated catcher Nick Raposo for assignment. The 26-year-old signed with the Cards as an undrafted free agent after the truncated five-round draft in 2020. He was selected to the MLB roster earlier this summer to help account for some catching injuries, but he didn’t get into a big league game. He’s hitting .193/.251/.349 in Triple-A this season but turned in a more encouraging .241/.321/.386 slash last year between Double-A and Triple-A. The Cards could trade him before tomorrow’s deadline, and if not, he’ll be placed on outright waivers.

That the Cardinals were able to acquire both Fedde and Pham while only surrendering Edman and a 17-year-old they just signed as an international free agent earlier this year is somewhat remarkable. It’s a nice feather in the cap of president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, general manager Mike Girsch and the rest of the St. Louis baseball ops staff. The Cards added two big league contributors to a contending club and did so not only without sacrificing any prospects — but without sacrificing anyone who’s contributed to their second-place team at any point this season.

That’s not to denigrate Edman as a player, of course — far from it. The switch-hitting 29-year-old is as versatile as he is talented when healthy, and he’ll presumably be healthy enough to join the Dodgers in short order. Edman hasn’t played this season due to a longer-than-expected recovery process from offseason wrist surgery and an ankle sprain he suffered while rehabbing that wrist. Edman has played four games with the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate on a minor league rehab assignment and figures to now continue his rehab work in the Dodgers’ system. He’ll have about two more weeks of rehab window before he needs to be activated, though Los Angeles can certainly do so sooner if they see fit.

Edman has spent four-plus seasons in the big leagues, playing second base, shortstop, third base and all three outfield positions. He rather incredibly grades out as an above-average defender at each of those positions, per Statcast and Defensive Runs Saved alike. That jack-of-all-trades skill set is emblematic of the type of player the Dodgers try to roster as often as possible. Edman, once healthy, will give L.A. an option at shortstop or second base, helping to cover for the loss of Mookie Betts. Once Betts returns, Edman can either play shortstop (with Betts moving to second base), second base (with Betts at short and Miguel Rojas in a utility role) or anywhere in the outfield (with Rojas and Betts handling middle infield duties).

Beyond the defensive wizardry, Edman has proven himself a capable hitter. He’s yet to recreate the terrific .304/.350/.500 line he posted as a Cardinals rookie in 2019, but he’s a career .265/.319/.408 hitter in 2425 plate appearances. He’s not a big home run threat but has hit between 11 and 13 homers in all four of his full big league seasons (plus five homers in the shortened 2020 campaign). He doesn’t walk especially often (6.2%) but also rarely strikes out (16.5%). On top of that, Edman offers 88th percentile sprint speed (per Statcast) and has swiped 106 bags in 123 attempts at the MLB level (86.2%).

Edman signed a two-year, $16.5MM contract in the 2022-23 offseason, buying out his final two seasons of arbitration eligibility. He’s earning $7MM this season and another $9.5MM next year. The Dodgers are a third-time luxury tax offender in the top tier of penalization, so they’ll pay a 110% tax on the average annual value both of Edman’s contract and of Kopech’s one-year deal with the club.

Onto Kopech, the 28-year-old former top prospect gives the Dodgers one of baseball’s hardest-throwing relievers for the remainder of this year and all of 2025. He’ll be arbitration-eligible this winter and owed a raise on this year’s modest $3MM salary.

The White Sox have used Kopech both as a starter and reliever, but lackluster command of his dynamic arsenal has undercut his effectiveness in both roles. He’s been used exclusively out of the ’pen in 2024 and saved nine games while pitching 43 2/3 innings of 4.74 ERA ball. The earned run average isn’t going to draw much fanfare, but Kopech has averaged a blistering 98.5 mph on his four-seamer, fanned 30.9% of his opponents and generated a gaudy 14.1% swinging-strike rate. He’s been plagued by a 12.6% walk rate and 1.65 HR/9, but Kopech has shown flashes of potential as a powerhouse, shutdown reliever.

Kopech is currently in the midst of his best stretch of the season. After getting blown up for four runs back on July 7, he’s rattled off 5 2/3 shutout innings with an 8-to-1 K/BB ratio. The Dodgers, who have a knack for maximizing pitching performances, are surely thrilled to get their hands on a pitcher with Kopech’s blazing heater and hard slider. Whether they can coax the level of performance from him that has long seemed dormant in Kopech’s talented but inconsistent right arm remains an open question, but if they’re able to do so, he’s a high-octane weapon who can take on a leverage role in a bullpen that has seen closer Evan Phillips struggle of late.

Los Angeles will also pick up the 17-year-old Gonzalez, who’s not considered to be among the Cardinals’ top-ranked prospects but did command a relatively notable $400K signing bonus out of Panama just seven months ago. The 6’4″, 200-pound righty has pitched 21 1/3 innings for the Cardinals’ Rookie-level Dominican Summer League affiliate and posted a 4.22 ERA while punching out 28.6% of his opponents against a 7.7% walk rate.

Turning to the rebuilding White Sox’ end of the deal, their return is headlined by Vargas, who’ll presumably step right onto the big league roster. The 24-year-old ranked among the sport’s top 100 prospects heading into the 2023 season but has fallen down the depth chart in Los Angeles after struggling to carry his excellent minor league production over to the majors. Vargas has appeared in 129 big league games and taken 434 plate appearances, but he’s a .201/.294/.364 hitter in that time.

Rough as those numbers are, Vargas has continued to absolutely pummel Triple-A pitching this season. He’s hitting .290/.440/.556 in Oklahoma City and has a career .297/.412/.512 batting line there in 996 plate appearances. He’s played third base, second base, first base and left field in his career, with the bulk of his experience coming at third base and second base. Vargas has regularly been blocked by more veteran, more expensive players at those positions but should get a full run at third base or second base with his new team.

Some Sox fans may bristle at the notion of a former top prospect headlining this deal, rather than a current one, but Vargas still has five seasons of club control remaining and has already gotten his feet wet in the majors. He’s an on-base machine who’s walked at an impressive 11.1% clip even while struggling in the big leagues and has fanned in a below-average 20.7% of his MLB plate appearances. It’s not hard to envision a scenario where he improves on both of those rate stats as he gets more big league experience and begins to solidify himself as a bona fide MLB-caliber hitter.

Joining Vargas in the White Sox’ system will be Albertus and Perez: both 19-year-old infielders who signed with the Dodgers as international free agents in 2022 (Albertus out of Aruba, Perez out of the Dominican Republic). Baseball America ranked both players inside the Dodgers’ top-20 prospects heading into the 2024 season, and both currently reside in that same range on MLB.com’s updated list of the top 30 Dodgers prospects.

Albertus has split the season between the Dodgers’ Rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate and Class-A affiliate. He tore through the former at a .342/.479/.459 pace with more walks (18.9%) than strikeouts (14%) and is hitting .229/.317/.329 in 82 plate appearances against more advanced pitching. Baseball America credits him with a plus hit tool and the potential for average power, calling him a bat-first infield prospect who could see regular playing time across multiple positions. MLB.com lauds him for having one of the most disciplined approaches in a deep Dodgers system and calls him a potential regular at second or third.

Perez has spent the entire season in Class-A and carries a hearty .264/.380/.420 batting line with 10 homers in 350 trips to the plate. He’s walked at a huge 13.7% clip against a 22% strikeout rate despite being just over two years younger than the average player in the league. Both BA and MLB.com note that he lacks a true plus tool but is solid across the board. Like Albertus, he draws praise for an advanced approach at the plate that’s well beyond his years. Perez has good contact skills and the ability to play multiple positions.

For a White Sox club that is often characterized by low-OBP, all-or-nothing hitters, the focus on bringing in three infielders with huge on-base ceilings feels like a rather targeted focus. None of the three players are going to jump to immediately land among the top 50 prospects in the game — Vargas isn’t even prospect-eligible anymore — but they all have a relatively similar feel and offer a potential glimpse at the type of hitters that rookie GM Chris Getz would prefer to see populating his roster in future seasons.

KPRC-2’s Ari Alexander reported Sunday night that the Sox, Dodgers and Cards had engaged in some level of discussions on a three-team deal involving Fedde and Edman. Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday that a three-team deal was nearing the finish line. Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo of The Athletic reported that Fedde would go to the Cardinals and Edman to the Dodgers. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale first reported that Vargas, Perez and Albertus were headed to the White Sox. FanSided’s Robert Murray reported that Pham was going to the Cardinals. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Cardinals were giving up an low-level minor leaguer.

I like this trade for all three teams!

White Sox get Miguel Vargas and two Dodgers top 20 prospects for Fedde, Kopech and Pham. Check!

Cardinals get Fede and Pham for Edman. Check!

Dodgers get Edman and Kopech for Vargas and the two top 20 prospects. Check!

Great deal for all three teams! Might not be great for Gavin Lux though.

Manny: This is not a good trade for Sox fans but Reinsdorf has got to be giddy dumping a $7.5m salary, which is much more than he wants to pay this year and 2025. I’ve said it before, but other GMs know Getz can be taken and this is another example of this. First, it was “Let’s get rid of all the rental players.” Fedde and Kopech are not rentals. Of course realistic Sox fans knew these guys were going. Crochet and Robert are also gone, if not now, then the off-season. Once again, Jerry doesn’t care about building a competitive team. It’s all about paying as little as possible for what has turned into a garbage team. And why not? There’s no one to stop jr, certainly not Manfred.

Miguel Vargas is talented. I think White Sox would have been happy to trade Fedde for Vargas straight up.

If that is directed for me, I do not speak for ANYONE other than myself. I meant to say that I think White Sox ownership and management would have been happy to trade Fedde straight up for Vargas. I think that is a good deal for both sides. Both palyers are talented and Vargas is cheaper and controlled longer.

So the question is whether the other two prospects are worth Kopech (who was not expiring) and Pham who was expiring.

Just saw this, but why didn’t WSox get 1 prospect from StL when parting with 3 players?

If there was a true stud prospect I get it, but looks like unpredictable teenagers as far as being relevant in a few years after a maybe okay Vargas.

Surprised they didn’t get a better top piece offer for Fedde in talks whether Milw or elsewhere.

Me? What sort of haul did you “realistically” expect for a year and a half of Fedde? He’s good but not that good. As for other rentals, guys like Brebbia, Soroka, Flexen and DeJong aren’t in high demand for contending teams. GM’s roll the dice all the time on minor league off season signings. Some work out and turn into mid season trade chips, others don’t.

You seemed to have developed a deep resentment for the Sox and it’s apparently consuming you. Kinda sad, bro. It’s just baseball.

Yeah what’s the deal Avenger, Pham was a rental and Fedde was found change in the couch. He’s replaceable as the Sox have a burgeoning logjam of starters at B’ham. Bummed to lose Michael but hopefully he wins a title w the Dodgers. He’s thoughtful and brutally earnest, opening up about the mental health challenges of being a top athlete. In exchange, the Sox addressed one of their biggest areas of weakness, lack of OBA contact skills. One guy that helps immediately and 2 high ceiling 19 yr Olds. Hope this means moving on from the two Andrews

Pham is an expiring contract and gets mixed clubhouse reviews, they are lucky to dump him for salary relief.

Fedde for Vargas seems ok to me. Vargas is controlled for longer and has a great bat. The two young top 30 prospects for Kopech also seems ok. Cardinals could have sent Gallegos back to White Sox, but I doubt that the White Sox would have wanted to pay Gallegos.

Of course Pham has value. But he has a $3MM base salary for time spent in the majors and can earn an additional $1.5MM in performance bonuses. The question is whether his value (ability minus negatives) exceeds the remaining amount owed or merely is equal to the remaining amount owed.

He’s 41% above avg against lefties and can play CF and the White Sox sent cash with him. Even without the cash he’s still a massively productive platoon player. It’s not even close?

Best currency you can possibly have right now is a stockpile of kids to develop and trade from. The names involved in the deal ain’t sexy, but I am willing to see how they play out.

Contreras also was nowhere near the prospect/player he is since Brewers acquired him. Massive credit to them for taking a sub-par defensive catcher with offensive upside and turning him into a stud on both sides of the ball.

You’re out of your mind. Mo is a buffoon and Tommy Edman was worth way more than this. Bet the guy ends up ws mvp for the Dodgers. What has happened to STL fans? Are we just fine with mediocrity now? We got a hard maybe pitcher, a psychopath and probably a first round sweep for one of the greatest athletes ever to play (not saying he’s an all time great, I’m saying Edman was unreal athletically) and a fan favorite at that. This trade is absolute trash.

“If” he has a healthy run. Maybe he doesn’t. I don’t think they sold low so much as the Dodgers took a little gamble. This could also change if there are more players involved.

Fedde might regress or fade but he’s been great this year. Cards landed one of the best available starters on the market (who has an extremely reasonable contract into next year) and they gave up a guy who hasn’t played an inning this year who only had 2.1 WAR in a full season last year. It’s a solid move.

No, Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields will forever be AF’s worst trade.

Meanwhile, he sends out prospects never heard of by anyone other than their families and Miguel Vargas–who can’t play defense in the major leagues at any position other than the one manned by Freddie Freeman–and get back Tommy Edman (who’ll be back, and will be better than any of Ahmed/Kike/Taylor/Biggio/Hayward) and Michael Kopech (who maybe they can fix, but who cares?).

That’s a fine deal for LA.

The problem with it is that it’s currently the ONLY deal for LA thus far, on a team that was poorly constructed by AF & Co….

Idk about that. There’s some risk here but edman ticks a lot of boxes for the dodgers’ positional mix needs not just now but in the near future. Opens a lot of options for them both this season and in terms of their likely needs over the off-season as well.

Edman has taken far too long to prove his health this season and Vargas has much more upside. My comment came before they announced Kopech was going to the Dodgers, so I call this an overall win for the Dodgers. However, giving Roberts another arm in the bullpen is going to confuse him even more.

Vargas isn’t a major-league defender anywhere (other than perhaps 1B, where his bat isn’t nearly potent enough to merit a spot), while Edman is the type of utility player the Dodgers FO covets who’s actually good (as opposed to way too much of their 26-man at this point).

A solid move (though losing Perez is a bummer), but yes, hardly a tentpole deal at a deadline where the Dodgers FO basically called their “impact trade” shot.

With the deal costing only Edman, it’s a win for the Cardinals. I love Tommy Edman and also wish him the best.

Yes there is some risk that he can’t get the command issues under control but theres good upside here too. It’s not like shedding a marginal relief arm from the roster is a huge opportunity cost though. And I kind of doubt that the dodgers are overflowing with marginal arms on their current roster who compare to kopech on velo, stuff and upside.

He’s pitched in parts of five seasons in the majors and hasn’t gotten his command under control yet, so I wouldn’t expect much to change in a new uniform. High velocity pitchers are practically a dime a dozen these days. Ones who can throw it for strikes, not so much. He probably knocks Banda or Honeywell off the roster so not a lot of improvement there either.

BS_LA; I think Edman was the main piece here. He plays GREAT defense at all 3 outfield positions and at 2nd; 3rd & short. 265 avg. hitter? I’ll definitely take that over Kike, Taylor, Muncy, Heyward. So done with those guys! Hopefully 1 or 2 more deals coming between now and 3:00 p.m. pacific time tomorrow!

Fair concerns. I think it’s worth mentioning that sizable chunks of that span you mention have gone to kopech failing to establish himself as a starter though. High octane swing and miss stuff with some control concerns can play better in a short relief role than in a sp role. And kopech has recorded some stretches of effective relief work in more recent seasons. To be clear, I’m not trying to suggest that kopech is a prize get or a steal in this trade. Just saying he’s an okay secondary throw-in piece with some upside. Edman will be the determining factor in whether this deal helps the dodgers far more than kopech imo.

I’m just not real impressed with velocity for its own sake. I can see Kopech driving us crazy in late innings like so many of the other wild flamethrowers we’ve seen before.

Agreed. Edman’s a risk but if he can return to his pre-injury form, he’s a huge upgrade to the Dodgers roster. He’s an upgrade over Lux at 2B vs. LHP, he’s an upgrade at 3B over Kiké/Biggio until Muncy is back (which may not happen this season), he’s an upgrade in CF (pushing Pages into a platoon with Heyward in RF). Arguably an upgrade at SS over Ahmed/Rojas until Mookie is back, too.

Interaction between STL and LAD is minimal.

Vargas never got a great chance – that;’t the issue – now he will and my bet is he hits – a lot. I hope the Dodgers have a plan for Kopech.

Edman is a California native and his best 3 positions are ones the Dodgers need help at. I think it’s risky to count on him because he’s been hurt all year. But if he’s healthy he’s a good player and a great fit for the Dodgers.

Agreed on Vargas. He underwhelmed last year but this year seemed to have a better approach at the plate. He could be a plus MLB bat but of course offset by his defense. I’m not too excited about Kopech unless his command vastly improves, but how many young pitchers are in same situation and how many actually fix that?

Kopech’s walk rate is way too high and he gives up too many dingers to be more than a mop-up guy. Unless Prior can voodoo this dude into knowing where the ball is going I don’t like this addition. Edman, on the other hand, is a clear upgrade on Vargas and all the little whiners who don’t like him will come around soon enough. Happy for Vargas that and he will have the chance to get some ABs on the South Side.

Yes Edman is a great fit for the Dodgers. He can play center, 2b and short and those are all needs for the Dodgers. He’s not a good 3b so Rojas might have to play there until Muncy is healthy.

Not liking this trade. Vargas has some upside with his bat even though his glove is as terrible as it can get. Edelman is versatile and great glove but I worry about his bat. Kopech hasn’t proven that he has the command to be successful at the MLB level. All arm, no command. And then the Dodgers threw in a bunch of lottery tickets. This trade has Yordan Alvarez potential.

StL got a very good SP. They don’t want to miss out on the playoffs in 2 consecutive years. Arenado and Goldschmidt best years are starting to fade (More the latter) Pham will help their offense.
They could still use more offense

LAD got a good valuable BP guy.
    Edman is useful.

The potential of the prospects are anyones guess.

Still thinking there has to be more to this trade. Cardinals aren’t giving up much at all with just Edman going to the Dodgers. The Cardinals have a lot of major league ready starters that may or may not pan out that wont get an opportunity in St Louis. Kloffenstein, McGreevy, Graceffo and perhaps Bedell. Pick one. Zach Thompson I am sure is available. There has to be more to this deal.

As I said in another thread, Edman is drastically undervalued by fans. He’s EXACTLY what the Dodgers needed; a guy who can play all the positions they have questions about (CF, 2B, SS, 3B) with solid to gold glove defense while providing speed and league average offense. Those people who call him a utility player probably thought of Zobrist the same way, but teams value such a guy.

He’s a corner infielder who has not been able to play either position with the Dodgers. He was a slightly subpar 2B and a ghastly LF. I think Roberts had finally given up on playing him in the OF, weeks later than it should have happened. Give him consistent playing time at 1B and you could be looking at another Michael Busch. He just didn’t respond to the Dodgers’ weird personnel management.

Hoping for at least one solid OF prospect from STL, who churns out quality OFs like no other.

Will the Mariners pry 1B Guerrero, Jr. from Toronto? It will take a haul, but the M’s might do it:
    #2 Prospect Harry Ford, catcher
    #6 Prospect Tyler Locklear, 1B
    #10 Prospect Michael Morales, SP/RHP
    MLB/AAA former #2 Prospect, Emerson Hancock, SP/RHP

If that won’t do it, the M’s may turn to Tampa Bay for 1B Yandy Diaz. Age (33) and contract status ($24 million a year) make him a liability for the always-cost-conscious Rays. The same applies to Seattle, but they are in a position with a great pitching staff to go all the way with some critical offensive additions.

    #2 Prospect Ford
    #6 Prospect Locklear
    #9 Prospect Michael Arroyo, 2B/3B/SS
    #10 Prospect Morales

Basically this trade for Chicago is Fedde for Vargas. You can definitely make an argument Chicago should have gotten more.

As for Pham and Kopech, nah.

The two 19 year olds aren’t nothing. Sure that’s young so it makes it hard to project but both have had good minor league careers to date and have good pedigree to go with it.

It’s time for Terry Francona to be named GM of the White Sox. The people in charge now are just terrible and should be let go as soon as possible.

The prospects from dodgers are all quality prospect hitters that, importantly to Getz & his offensive philosophy being implemented, get on base as well as slug.

However, the deal is significantly light for the SOX, giving up three quality big leaguers for only three prospects. They had Fedde under control @ $7.5M in 2025, so what was the rush to not extract a prospect from STL? Although late word is a low level guy from STl will be included.

Hopefully Robert & Crochet are NOT dealt…and Getz learns from this mishandling of the deadline.

Absolute fleece job by St Louis to give up a 17 year old prospect and an oft-injured utility player for one of the best MLB pitchers this year that is cost controlled through next year, at a lower tier cost mind you, and the right-handed OF bat they needed.

I am shocked they got away with this.

White Sox getting a PTBNL helps a little.

But whoever that is may depend just on how far the Dodgers go in the playoffs.

My initial reaction is that this is a great trade for both St. Louis and Chicago and absolutely horrible for the Dodgers. Am I underrating Edman or what because that’s an awful lot to give up for him.

Jerry is being Jerry again,, just dumping salary. I don’t even have to look up the prospects, they are either never going to make it to MLB or, will be mismanaged and badly developed anyway because Getz is, and has always been a ‘developer.’ LOL. SMH.

Gotta trust Friedman n the process. Don’t believe Dodgers are done recalibrating roster. Vargas couldn’t establish himself w/bat n was rough to watch on D. Atleast for this yr LA has best player on planet @DH, why the all bat no glove wunderkinds like Vargas n Busch are gone. Didn’t lose that much prospect capital, none of the biggies. Edman can play all over, has base stealing speed, n a lil pop. Maybe w/Prior’s help, Kopech n his electric stuff can finally turn that corner. Go Dodgers !

How does this trade benefit the Dodgers? For Chicago, it’s a salary dump. For Cards, it’s valuable pieces to their roster, For Dodgers, trading one minor leaguer (Vargas) for another minor league INF (Edman) that isn’t healthy? Addiing Kopech for a gas can bullpen, and he may be good for one batter, instead of mop up duty? Dumpster diving again as their highly-paid SP s are on the IL.

mbarcos…I’m not sure either. Kopech is just another middling reliever. Edman improves the team defense over Vargas for sure and adds another weapon against LH pitching. It may be that he becomes a super sub/platoon player….that’s been a staple for this Dodger regime. But I don’t see the “impact” player the FO was talking about……more deals to come?

Bottom line – a with a pitcher of 6 seasons and an ERA of 4.92….who throws on the high end 88 mph…is not great, though this year is an outlier so far. The outfielder Pham does nothing for the team.

This team is at best (again) a wild card team with no potential to advance.

Cards gave up almost nothing which is good, but this really doesn’t move the needle at all for them. Pham does crush lefties, but this isn’t a power bat that will help a struggling offense put runs on the board like a Brent Rooker would. Like Pham, Fedde is a decent back-end of the rotation, innings-eater but he won’t move the needle at all in a playoff series like a Crochet or a Logan Gilbert/George Kirby type would. So OK moves from Mo, but this is basically re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic after it’s already hit the iceberg, it ain’t gonna make an iota of difference in the long run unless he pulls off another bigger move later tonight or tomorrow.

A++++ to the moon for the Cards. They got the 2 best players to help right now for literally absolutely nothing. Nice low level arm they can find a dozen of every year.

C for LA. They will get the best of Kop. Parted with nice but flawed non elite prospects.

C for Chicago. Compared to others in this market it’s a light return. But most years it’s a above average return and would have been a B. They did just fine.

After watching him play left field this year I can confidently say he has no business in left field. He’d have to improve a lot, and maybe he will. I seem to remember him in the minors as a 3B. Hits the ball pretty well.

The problem for these prospects coming to the White Sox is that they will have no tutelage at the major league level as the current group of managers and coaches simply cannot do their job (to put it nicely). If the Sox want any of these guys to pan out they need to show some accountability and fire Grifol and his merry band of losers. If anything just to turn a page on this past now two seasons of mediocrity.

Honestly I think they will be helped when they hit the double A team. I really think that Santos and his crew are doing good work in Birmingham. Now beyond that they will get trashed but by the time they are ready hopefully there will be REAL new leadership at the big ball club.

I’ve been a cardinal fan for 60 years. Trading Tommy Edman away is the stupidest trade I can ever remember. Tommy can play almost any position excellently, is a switch hitter and base stealer, has great baseball sense and is a future manager. Management not willing to increase payroll for pitching was a death knell I will never attend another Cardinal game for the rest of my life!!! In fact, I may switch to being a Dodgers fan. What a stupid decision by management!

Getz did get the best player in the Bummer deal as the PTBNL, Riley Gowans has been nearly fantastic. Perhaps that can rescue their haul in this one, which was missing a legit prospect back from STL especially since they sent $ to STL! I do like the offensive upside of Vargas & Perez , but Getz gets a -1 on this one.

Perhaps the Cards ownership group is struggling financially, they rely on the gate a lot more than most clubs. Sox & Dodgers really handed them quite a favor to help them make the post season and save cash.

Thought it was kind of blind that when talking about where Edman might fit with the Dodgers the most obvious need is 3B. We’ll soon have Mookie back, and removing a seriously surging Lux would be beyond dumb. Muncy is looking like he’s done for the year and anyone the Dodgers slot in at 3rd is a black hole with the bat. Looking forward to Edman at 3rd, but with Dave at the helm, well, who the hell knows…
