Cubs Release Dan Straily, Kyle McGowin

By Mark Polishuk | August 10, 2024 at 10:32am CDT

The Cubs released right-handers Dan Straily and Kyle McGowin from their minor league contracts with the team, as per the official transactions page for the Triple-A Iowa affiliate.  Straily signed with Chicago in April and McGowin signed in May, with both pitchers returning to the affiliated minors after initially signing deals with the independent Atlantic League for the 2024 season.

Straily posted a 4.56 ERA across 803 1/3 innings with six different Major League teams from 2012-19, primarily pitching for the A’s, Marlins, and Reds.  He followed up that MLB tenure with a four-season stint in Busan with the Lotte Giants of the Korea Baseball Organization, through Straily also briefly pitched in the Diamondbacks’ farm system in 2022.  Straily had a 3.29 ERA over 503 innings with the Giants, though that overall successful number masks some inconsistency, primarily in a 2023 season that saw the righty deliver only a 4.37 ERA in 80 1/3 frames before being released last July.

The results also haven’t been there for Straily in his age-35 season, as he has a 5.49 ERA, 21.4% strikeout rate, and 10.8% walk rate over 78 2/3 innings for Iowa.  A lot of the damage has been caused by the home run ball, as Straily has given up 18 round-trippers during the limited sample size of his time with the Cubs’ top affiliate.  Keeping the ball in the park was often a struggle for Straily during his days in the big leagues — he allowed a National League-high 31 homers in 2016 when a member of the Reds rotation, and he gave up an incredible 22 home runs in only 47 2/3 innings while pitching for the Orioles in 2019.

McGowin has also had a tough time in Iowa this season, posting a 6.13 ERA in 10 starts and 47 Triple-A innings.  The righty showed much better form in Double-A (2.22 ERA in 28 1/3 IP) and in his brief time with the Atlantic League’s Charleston Dirty Birds (2.70 ERA in 10 innings), but McGowin’s lack of success in Iowa led the Cubs to part ways with the 32-year-old.

McGowin’s big league resume consists of a 5.98 ERA over 64 2/3 innings, all with the Nationals in parts of every season from 2018-21.  His 4.20 ERA over 30 innings in 2021 marked both his best ERA and his highest innings total over a single MLB season, though the Nats outrighted him off their 40-man roster at season’s end and McGowin hasn’t since gotten another look in the Show.  The righty didn’t pitch at all in 2022 while recovering from a UCL injury but resurfaced in 2023 to pitch in independent ball, the Chinese Professional Baseball League, and 62 1/3 innings with the Astros’ Triple-A club.

Totally surprised Hoyer let go of one of his pets, Straily. Now if he could just learn to do that with the rest of them things would be a whole lot better.

Dan Straily learns the Roger Beshens Football Slider and the rest is history.
Hoyer should just hire RB. If he did the Cubs would be elite.
Ethan Katz got hired learning that slider in May 2018. If Katz knew it when he taught HS, Flaherty, Fried and Giolito would have threw it then. That wasn’t the case.

You probably should know that Hoyer had very little influence on Straily being in the organization. Hoyer doesn’t manage minor league rosters. This is Hawkins and player development. $145 annual subscription doesn’t make you smart.

I don’t think Hawkins has the authority to sharpen a pencil without asking Hoyer first.

Dan Straily is known for learning the Roger Beshens Football Slider in May 2018. Dan was secondary on the bulk messages Roger sent out how to throw his football slider. On center grip, throw like Football, Stiff wrist.

Dan Straily, my favorite Roger Beshens Football Slider guy.
Straily and Brandon McCarthy in June 2018 were the early birds throwing that football slider. That message with Danny and Bmac has been googled a zillions times.

There’s a guy named Roger Beshens (he’s in a few videos on YouTube) that claims he started the whole “sweeper” movement by have a Twitter DM conversation with Brandon McCarthy, and now is trying to spread how he started a revolution in MLB. It’s a weird thing.

“He started the whole sweeper movement”…Who knew that renaming a slider with a big break a “sweeper” would start a movement? Incidentally, The late Jose Fernandez(and several others)was throwing a big breaking slider well before they were called “sweepers”.

Roger Beshens didn’t create the pitch he got hundreds to start throwing it in May 2018 on Twitter. That’s why MLB in 2018 had more K’s than hits for the 1st time in it’s history,
Cole, Snell Flaherty and 50 more couldn’t avg over a K in IP until 2018.

The Sweeper is a slider thrown from a lower arm angle.
There shouldn’t be a pitch called a sweeper or Gyro.
Tom Tango contacted Roger in Nov 2018 even said “lets call it football slider for now” The football slider is the sweeper and gyro. They should have just gave credit to Roger and then explained the grip tilt and wrist action of the pitch and saved arms and headaches all over the world.

Brandon McCarthy asked Roger Beshens how to throw his football slider, got back to him 4 days later said he threw it against the Nationals on June 2 2018. There were 34 Ks in the game Biddle whiffed 8 in 3 IP Bmac said he whiffed Rendon, Turner and Pitcher Gonzalez it’s going to be a weapon. That message is on his Facebook along with the video of the k”s!

It’s easy to understand. Snell, Cole, Glasnow, Taillon Musgrove, Freeland, Marquez and hundreds of more since 2018 throw the football slider. They didn’t prior to 2018.
Any pitcher that gets a message on center grip, throw like football stiff wrist is going to throw it.
If Roger Messaged pitchers in 2004 the movement would have happened then.

Beshens sent out hundreds of messages to ML pitchers on how to throw his football slider. He sent a message to Glasnow in May 2018 here’s Andrew Millers slider, 4 seam on label, throw like football, stiff wrist. He even sent a pic to Glasnow of Miller showing the 90 degree football tilt and said this is you soon and Miller would never had told you. The Rays seen Glasnow throw that football slider and gladly gave up Archer. Glasnow messaged Beshens June 19 2018 and told him everyone throws the football slider. If that was the case why wasn’t Glasnow throwing the football slider or any slider before 2018?

Google Roger Beshens Football Slider click images.
When Matt Blake, Ethan Katz got hired as ML pitching coaches didn’t you wonder what do they teach? They got hired to teach the football slider.
When MLB decided to call a slider thrown from a lower arm angle a Sweeper didn’t you think that was odd? It’s the football slider.
RB didn’t create the pitch his messages to thousands of ML pitchers in May 2018 did. Proof is instantly Brandon McCarthy told him what game he threw the Football Slider. June 2 2018 vs Nat’s.

Google go away and see what comes up. Juan Marichal was throwing that pitch in the 60’s. I’m pretty sure Luis Tiant was throwing it in the 70’s. I bet if you found some film of Christy Mathewson he was throwing it in 1910 or whenever he played. Your point is there is no point. You have no point except at the top of your head. So go away.

No Uncle Mikey, Roger Beshens never said he created the pitch. Carlton, Guidry, Miller, Hand and others threw it. What you and many don’t understand going into the 2018 MLB season, Miller, Hand, Corbin, Romo and less than a handful other did throw it. NONE of those guys told their teammates. Then in May 2018 Roger Beshens messaged hundreds of ML pitchers how to throw his Football Slider. He messaged his Grip, Tilt and Wrist action that NOBODY ever explained it like this, On center Grip, Throw like Football, Stiff Wrist. Roger Beshens didn’t create the pitch he INFLUENCED hundreds of MLB pitchers through Twitter Messages and Brandon McCarthy confirmed it when he told Roger he tried it June 2 2018 vs Nats’ called it a weapon and said it leaves my hand much more like a fastball so it doesn’t have to be thrown perfectly to get a bad swing or take.

Strom asked Beshens how he shapes the pitch and it’s helped Ryne Nelson and Slade Cecconi recently.
I would say that’s attention and glory?
          You think?
