Mike Trout Done For The Year Due To Meniscus Tear

By Darragh McDonald | August 1, 2024 at 5:15pm CDT

Angels outfielder Mike Trout has suffered another meniscus tear and is out for the year. General manager Perry Minasian informed reports today, including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, who relayed the news on X.

Trout underwent surgery at the start of May to address a torn meniscus in his left knee. He was able to begin a rehab assignment by playing for the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees on July 23 but departed that game with left knee soreness. The Angels then announced that he would return to Southern California to be re-evaluated and it now appears that a torn left meniscus has been discovered yet again and he won’t be able to return in 2024.

“Since my initial surgery on May 3rd to repair my meniscus, my rehabilitation proved longer and more difficult than anticipated,” Trout said in a statement released on X. “After months of hard work, I was devastated yesterday when an MRI showed a tear in my meniscus that will require surgery again – ending my hopes of returning this season. Playing and competing is a huge part of my life. This is equally as heartbreaking and frustrating for me as it is for you, the fans. I understand that I may have disappointed many, but believe me, I will do everything I can to come back even stronger. I will continue to help my team and teammates from the dugout as we press forward into the second half of the season. Thank you for your support.”

It’s yet another brutal blow in a career that was once defined by such brilliance but has more recently been defined by injuries. From 2012 to 2020, Trout was the consensus best player in baseball. In that stretch, he hit 297 home runs and drew walks in 15.4% of his plate appearances. He slashed .306/.421/.587 for a wRC+ of 173 while stealing 197 bases and providing quality defense in center field. FanGraphs considered him to be worth 73 wins above replacement in that time frame, with Max Scherzer coming in a distant second with 50.4 fWAR. Buster Posey was second among position players with 47.1 fWAR.

But Trout has been significantly hampered by various ailments since that time. In 2021, a right calf strain limited him to just 36 games. In 2022, he got that up to 119 games but still missed a bit of time due to back problems. Last year, a left hamate fracture capped him at 82 games.

When he’s been able to take the field, he has still been able to produce at an elite level, and that was still true here in 2024. He began the season with 10 home runs and six steals in just 29 games. Despite a tiny .194 batting average on balls in play, he produced a line of .220/.325/.541 for a wRC+ of 137. But due to these ongoing knee problems, he won’t be able to add anything to those stats with the remainder of the schedule.

The news won’t have a huge impact on the Halos here in 2024. At 47-61, they are well back of the playoff race at this point. They recently made some sell-side moves ahead of the deadline, trading impending free agents Carlos Estévez and Luis García.

Fans of the club and baseball in general will be hoping that Trout comes back healthy and effective next year. Though many of his injuries have appeared to be fluky in nature, his continued absences naturally create some worry about the long-term picture for the club. Even when they had peak Trout on the same roster as Shohei Ohtani, they never managed to get into the playoffs or even finish a season with a winning record. Ohtani is now a Dodger while Trout is going to turn 33 years old next month and hasn’t played 120 games in a season since 2019.

The extension he signed in 2019 runs through 2030 and pays him $35.45MM annually at this point. Fans of other clubs often dream of getting Trout out of Anaheim via trade but his run of injuries will make other teams loath to take on all that money for his mid- and late-30s. He also has a full no-trade clause and has expressed a desire to stay and win with the Angels.

Back doing what? 100-200 at bats if that? In the past 5 yrs he has averaged about 50 games a year. He is injury prone. New stuff will develop.

You do realize that 2020 was a truncated season, right? He is averaging 66 games a year for the last 4 seasons. He played in 53 of the 60 games in 2020. That puts is 5 year average at 72 games.

He is not injury prone. What Trout is doing is going on vacation for the rest of the year when the Angels don’t have a chance to get in the playoffs. Angels is the team that players go to when they want to “retire while on duty”. Rendon also does this. Angels should get Kris Bryant since he is “retired while on duty”.

No reason to think he’ll never play again unless he’s going to tear his meniscus every time he tries to play. This does seem unusual. He’s suddenly making Giancarlo Stanton seem Cal Ripken-like.

I tore my meniscus after two fifty mile weeks and a ten mile AT hike. Stupid. But of all the nasty knee injuries, it’s the least bad. For me, he just snipped away the torn part but I was over 50 and the surgeon hated running. I have to imagine Trout’s surgery was to try and save as much as possible which means a longer recovery process to build back full mobility. This is a shame.

They don’t call them winners. They laud the haul they received for two players while noting they had more they should have traded away. They gave them a B grade, which is reasonable.

His agent wasnt going for some short term deal. Look at all these other 10 yr deals with Seager, Turner after the Trout deal was signed. Those deals will go bad, but the teams hope they get 7-8 good yrs before they go upside down. The idea is to get the most you can.

Phillies should hire him as part time broadcaster for the remainder of the season. They have Sunday’s with Schmidt. Why not sign up Trout for Tuesday’s with Trout or Thursday’s with Trout. Or bring him on Sunday’s with Schmidt and Tom and they can calling it Sunday’s with Schmidt fishing with Trout.

Wright was a seven-time All-Star who also won two Gold Gloves for his play at third base and won two Silver Slugger Awards. He also received MVP votes in six seasons, getting as high as sixth place in 2012 when he slashed .306/.391/.492 with 21 home runs and 93 RBI for the 74-88 Mets and fourth in 2007 when he slashed .325/.416/.546 while hitting 30 home runs and driving in 107 RBI.

That’s very good and what fans would call Hall of Very Good. Seven All-Star nods is the big feather in his cap. The other achievements don’t compare very well to other Hall of Famers.

If I had a vote, I’d put him on my ballot to keep his name out there (rather than the steroid guys or cheaters). He’s going to struggle to stay over 5% for future votes.

Modern athletes peak physically at somewhere between 25 and 27. It’s been getting younger because they’re trained so heavily already as a teen. Trout came into the league looking like a 28 year old, for instance.

Who’s the other? Rendon is not a HOF player. Or at least not one who’s getting in any time soon after he retires. He’s “Hall of Pretty Good.”

33 WAR .281/.365/.468 .833 OPS. Only 158 career HR. Two Silver Sluggers and one AS game. Only finished in the top 10 MVP voting twice. Plus, he’s only played more than 100 games five times in 11 seasons. That 2019 season, after which the Angels gave him a stupid contract, skews the perception of him. He was good, sometimes very good, but not a definite HOF player.

Trout is a career 86.1 WAR player who’s hit .299/.410/.581 with a .991 OPS. He’s 76th in career HR and only needs 22 more to get to 400, All that has earned him ROY, three MVP awards (plus finished 2nd four more times), Nine Silver Slugger awards and 10 All Star game selections.

Trout could retire tomorrow and be a first ballot HOF. The only “what if?” that we’ll never know is whether he would have finished alongside Bonds, Aaron, Ruth and Pujols with more than 700 HR *and* hit for a great average.

They said initially that it was scar tissue, maybe that was wishful at the time. The Angels at this point are better off letting Adell and Moniak play the rest of the year out. Let him heal and train and mentally prepare to be fully healthy and ready by Spring Training.
O’Hoppe, Neto, Shanuel, Detmers, other young pitchers should be have a good idea of who they are as a team and be a stronger as a team next year! Tough times build character!

As a baseball fan, this *really* sucks. Although, since the Angels aren’t going anywhere (again) it’s best for Trout long term. Give him more time to get healthy for Opening Day 2025. Maybe in the interim Trout and the Angels will agree that moving to DH is the best way to hopefully keep him healthy next year. We all know Moreno won’t ever agree to a full rebuild that would allow Trout to go to a contender.

Absolutely somebody among the high dollar “usual suspects” would take a chance.

Unlike Strasburg, Trout’s injury isn’t likely to be completely career threatening. If it didn’t work out, you eat some of the contract and get him to agree to a trade like the Mets did at the deadline last year. If it did work out, you’ve got a high average power hitter in the middle of your lineup and didn’t give up any players to get him. At first glance, he’s a *definite* upgrade over Verdugo. The Yankees could cycle him between the OF and DH to hopefully keep him healthy.

“Same injury in a few weeks”..The NBA’s Joel Embid recovered from a meniscus tear in about 7 weeks. Granted, he wasn’t 100% but still one of the 1 or 2 best players on the floor in the NBA Playoffs. From what I’ve seen from Mike Trout, is that he’s a sure HOFer, but an extremely slow healer on just about any type of injury.

Meniscus tears vary quite a bit in severity. Think of a donut as a cushion between your 2 leg bones at the knee. You can have a minor tear and a little piece hanging off the side, or you could have a complete tear from the outside all the way to the middle. Or somewhere in between the two cases. Sometimes it’s a Big Slice on the edge hanging out and torn.

Since the meniscus is squished, that total tear “Gap” becomes greater and the Integrity of the cushion flattens out. Then you get bone on bone in that missing donut tear “Gap” created by the complete tear.

So sometimes you trim the torn piece off and continue playing in short time or sometimes you sew the piece back on in the hopes of keeping your entire meniscus intact. But if the tear is from the outside towards the inside sewing it back is difficult and a tough rehab if it’s done at all. It’s tough to get blood to the center to heal from what I hear.

I’m not a doctor but I hope the way I explained this is correct. I’m sure someone will step in if I’m off in some way.

Tim Lincecum seemed like a no question pitcher after back to back Cy Youngs during his 4 years of dominance and he won’t ever make it. Tho that 4 year run is the only part of his career that would’ve ever sniffed the HOF looking at stats. Trout hasn’t ever been on a good team his entire career and won’t get a ring so I didn’t remember his accomplishments as much.

He’s only 32. Get the knee repaired, consign him primarily to DH duties and he should be able to continue to rake for a few more years. Just because his knee is stuffed right now doesn’t mean he’s lost his command of the strike zone or ability to hit the ball consistently hard. He could easily be the next Ortiz or Big Hurt.
As for this suggestion he’s not a HOFer….it’s inane. As mentioned above, all the accolades, leaderboards, etc. Trout was pretty much the best player in MLB for 8 years straight. There are maybe 5-10 players ever who can claim something like that.

IMO the closest comp in terms of position is Harold Baines.

Baines knees wouldn’t allow him to play the OF full time after his age 27 season with the White Sox in 1986. Became more or less a full time DH and played until 2001. Made four more AS teams and won a SS award as a DH. Hit .289/.356/.465 .820 OPS. Baines is currently just ahead of Trout on the All Time HR list with 384.

I can see that. The irony is all he needs is Mantle’s last 4 years and that will still net him another 80+ homers, a couple of 150+ OPS seasons and the rest of the numbers that come with that. It wouldn’t be the finish we all want, but it’d be productive and make his counting stats more interesting. I actually think if the knee gets repaired ok and they DH him, he can still make 500 homers, which would be kind of cool.

Agree, I will never understand why some people don’t think of Trout as a hall of famer. Look at his numbers and compare them to hall of famers and you’ll see that he fits right in at this very moment.

There isn’t a hall of famer with less then 2000 hits and 400 home runs in the outfield.

Andruw Jones (434 HR/1933 RBI) is inching up in voting (61.6%) in his 7th year on the ballot. He might have made it this year if it wasn’t for a crowded ballot. Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine all credit him for their careers.

I thought Trout was a shoe in for HOF before you pointed out he doesn’t yet have 3,000 or 2,000 hits. Still think he’ll get in but maybe not if 2024 is his final season.

Angels can see what it’s like playing without Trout. Fans hurting most not being able to see him play. Braves will take Trouts contract next year, send some players back which is what the Angels need. They owe the Braves for that Kotchman deal.

Breaks my heart to say but the curse of Mike Trout hits again .

I am starting to believe we will never make the playoffs again until the anchors of all the bad contracts are off the books including Trouts.

It may be time to retire as I want to remember the first half of his career not the last.

The ongoing idiocy of all parties here.

They really can’t figure out Trout’s strictly a DH at this point, and very probably was as of early 2021–you know, if he wanted to play in more than 41% of Angels’ games over the last four seasons and just 35% in 2023-2024?

Not to mention wrecking any real shot he has at a long, productive career as a hitter making $37m a year until the end of time. And he’s still stealing bases in 2024, at a pace of almost 40 attempts in 650 PA when he’s made of tissue paper? The collective IQ in LAA must be in double figures.

I hate to see players such as Trout, Acuna, and to a lesser extent injury wise, guys like Albies and Henderson miss time. You like to see the best players stay healthy, but this is life and sport unfortunately.

It’s always interesting when people talk about Acuna being injured,
a lot of negative energy and comments are pushed his way.
Both Trout and Acuna play the game hard, you don’t steal 73 bags not playing the game hard, simple as that.
EDLC has 55 so far in 2024, it will be interesting to see what he ends up with.

Looking forward to seeing Trout and Acuna back in 2025, and hopefully no more injuries in future, however, it seems once you’ve had knee injuries, it’s more often than not a slippery slope with other things going wrong or reinjuring oneself.

Last but not least, there are plenty of ‘elite’ players like Trout that never won a World Series nor got to play in one, some even got to a World Series multiple times and won nothing.

Meniscus tears suck and cannot be repaired as good as new — EVER!

He must play with pain, antiinflamatories, pain killers, taping, heat treatments, Ice etc….. like Mickey Mantle did. When the meniscus breaks up and locks the knee, then it is removed. Play with bone on bone and later a knee replacement.

If he waits to be perfect and pain free — he’ll never be back.
