Red Sox Outright Jamie Westbrook

By Steve Adams | August 15, 2024 at 12:55pm CDT

Red Sox infielder Jamie Westbrook passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment earlier this week and has now been assigned outright to Triple-A Worcester, reports Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe. He’ll stick with the organization but is no longer on the 40-man roster.

Westbrook signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox back in December and made his big league debut as a 29-year-old rookie earlier this season. The former D-backs draftee, who’s also spent time with the Yankees and Brewers organizations, got into 21 games and tallied 48 plate appearances. He managed just a .150/.234/.350 slash in that time, however.

Prior to his call to the majors, Westbrook was quite productive in Triple-A — as has been the case throughout his pro career. He hit .291/.381/.475 in 291 plate appearances for the WooSox (23% better than average, per wRC+), bringing his lifetime batting line in parts of six Triple-A seasons to a healthy .284/.377/.462 in more than 1700 plate appearances. He’ll now head back to Worcester and look for another shot down the stretch. If he doesn’t get one and isn’t added back to the 40-man roster before the end of the season, Westbrook will once again be able to become a minor league free agent.

Well he got his cup of coffee which is more than 99.9% of people in this world… Good for him if it’s his only taste…

      I wonder how many players have the Frank “Pops” Morgan story from Major League: Back to the Minors;

“Came close, once. It was with the Red Sox organization”

      “Yeah?”

“It was October. A player got sick. So i got the call. I was on the plane and a freak snow storm hit. We couldn’t land. Two days later: the weather is fine, so is the player”

      “That stinks”

“20 years in the Minors, i circled the show, couldn’t land”

Rsox – I wonder why so many Sox players go unclaimed? I guess their treasure is another man’s trash.

The problem is it started as “trash” in the first place. Now I’m not saying Westbrook or any of the others are bad people but a 29 year old career minor leaguer who is 6-40 at the MLB level brings nothing to a team that they probably don’t already have. Same with Keller, Anderson or any of the others that have passed thru waivers

Rsox – Agreed! They are fine as filler for small market non-contenders, but shouldn’t be needed by big market teams.

no matter how many times you want to say it and not matter how deep into the dark web you have to go to find any site website that agrees with your quarter baked half assed analysis (because no reputable website would) the Farm system has improved and actually got better under bloom. You can repeat blatant lies all you want but that doesn’t make them true

Those teams that haven’t rostered him (or kept him on the roster) must be seeing something disqualfying

Well, isn’t that a fine how-do-you-do? The poor fella finally gets his shot at the big leagues, and now he’s back to riding the buses in Triple-A.

Meanwhile Gasper has gotten one plate appearance (though he did draw a walk) since his call-up. If the kid isn’t going to get to play they might as well have called up Westbrook

Now release Luis Garcia. But that won’t happen.

…letitbe – “Now release Luis García….”, and replace him with whom from the list of AAA Worcester pitchers. There is no depth with experience in AAA who is better than García currently…..

The Yorke trade with the Pirates, Schreiber to KC, Rule 5 for Slaten, Verdugo to NY, have all been meant to add depth to a badly lacking list of pitching depth on the Red Sox as they have used the draft for position players more than every other team in the MLB (per Soxprospect).

With respect, MLB, the Sox could have signed Flaherty and/or Lorenzen fairly cheap and it doesn’t explain that idiotic Sale trade. The Verdugo deal wasn’t bad. I think that Yorke trade is going to be horrendous for them, especially since they have little-to-no infield depth, either.

Wow, that will save the season. J(just cheap)ohn H(horrible tightwad)enry and Craig ( I value pitching) Breslow have killed another season. This team had something neither of them have, a set on them.

Let’s go on the Baltimore plan and be terrible for a decade to stockpile draft picks for maybe a few playoff appearances. Welcome to little league baseball in Beantown!

Done with Cheapsville, how much money does this creep need? Did he figure a way to take it with him after he goes?
