Poll: Who Wins The World Series?

By Mark Polishuk | October 20, 2024 at 10:55pm CDT

The most common rivalry in World Series history is being renewed for the first time since 1981, as the Dodgers and Yankees will meet for a record 12th time in the Fall Classic.  New York holds an 8-3 lead in the previous matchups, which included such iconic baseball moments as Jackie Robinson’s steal of home, Don Larsen’s perfect game, Reggie Jackson’s three-homer performance, and many more.

Now, a modern set of superstar players will square off.  Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole, Teoscar Hernandez, Giancarlo Stanton, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto will be among those trying to win their first World Series rings, while the likes of Juan Soto and Mookie Betts are looking to add to their already-storied October legacies.

The L.A. lineup was simply too much for the Mets in the NLCS, as the Dodgers scored 46 runs over the six games.  While the Dodgers’ reliever-heavy pitching attack is still trying to cover innings amidst a lot of injuries to regular starters, the team is perhaps just pitching too well to really call it a “patchwork” staff any more — Los Angeles has recorded four shutouts in its last eight playoff games.

The New York offense was also too much for the Guardians in the ALCS, with Stanton and Soto in particular leading the way with a combined seven homers and 13 RBI over the five-game series.  Cole, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt have also formed a powerful three-man front in the rotation, and Luke Weaver’s late-season emergence as the Yankees’ closer has continued into a largely dominant postseason.

The Yankees are looking to add to their record total of 27 championships, though they are in a relative drought by the franchise’s lofty standards.  This is only the second time in 21 seasons that New York has taken part in the World Series, with the only other appearance in that span coming in 2009 when the Yankees defeated the Phillies.  The Dodgers have “only” seven titles to show from their 22 trips to the World Series, but they have the most recent victory, capturing the 2020 Series that followed the pandemic-shortened regular season.

Since the Dodgers won 98 regular-season games to the Yankees’ 94 wins, Los Angeles holds the home-field advantage, so the World Series is set to begin on Friday at Dodger Stadium.  Just one question remains….what’s your prediction?

let – While I’d be happy to see Mookie get another legit WS ring and Ohtani certainly deserves one as well, the Yankees trio of Judge/Soto/Stanton seem unstoppable right now. The teams are so similar with an explosive offense and questionable pitching, I think it’s very difficult to confidently predict a winner.

Kinda funny all the Yankee fans who wanted Stanton released last year, why are fans so quick to write off star players?

Gotta give credit to Steinbrenner and the Yankees front office. They were embarrassed about missing the playoffs last year, and took on the extra payroll and traded the prospects necessary to put championship caliber talent on the roster. They wanted to win this year, badly.

Unlike my team’s owners, who have publicly stated they won’t try to win until at least 2026 and proved it last offseason and prior to this year’s trade deadline.

Looking forward to a great World Series!

Remember FPG, this is Stanton’s seventh year in pinstripes. Stanton gave us one very good year followed by five disappointing, oft injured seasons. We lost faith over an extended period of time. Cashman even went so far as to say injuries should be expected from Stanton.

That’s why this playoff redemption tour feels so awesome for both fans and I’m sure the player.

My – I understand Stanton has been often hurt since 2019, but from 2018-2021 he put up a .864 OPS (134 OPS+) which is really, really good and proof that when he’s healthy he is still one of the better hitters in the game.

Really his situation almost mirrored that of Sale, injuries affecting his performance for 5 years. With his career accomplishments, Stanton always had the ability. Even if he plays only 120 regular season games, him being healthy in the postseason is worth holding onto him ….. right? Rather than eating his entire remaining contract?

And FTR I expect Trout to have a comeback season too.

It might be “an MLB dream”, but it is questionable whether LAD-NYY will attract in many viewers outside of those markets. Looking at recent history, the Cubs-Guardians/Indians WS drew the most. While Chicago is a huge market, Cleveland is less so. What attracted viewers was the story. Would the Cubs finally break their “curse”? Is there an interesting story associated with this WS? LA versus NYC is probably not an attractive story for many casual fans. Despite what both NYers and LAers may think, much of the country between those two cities really don’t care about those cities. No shade, just reality. You need a story to attract the casual fan. Perhaps Judge versus Ohtani will provide a story to attract the casual fans.

FPG – I’m judging off of the expectations Stanton set for himself. He was coming off a 59 HR MVP campaign. So he was above average when healthy towards the beginning of the acquisition but Cashman essentially chose Stanton over Harper.

We were hoping for top 5 MVP production, not above average play when not dealing with soft tissue injuries. Stanton is a very hard worker and a great teammate, but overall has been a relative bust compared to what the Yankees thought they were acquiring.

Not that I’ve been combing the internet looking for opinions on the NY-LA matchup, but you are the first I’ve seen that thinks this matchup is subpar. The 2 most storied franchises, the 2 largest fanbases outside of their respective cities, the extensive history of these two teams meeting in the W.S, etc. This is the matchup Fox wanted for viewership, and they have been gushing about it since LA knocked off the Mets. I suspect your weak reasoning to belittle the matchup stems mostly from your dislike for one of the teams or both.

let – Yeah I just can’t bring myself to root for the Yankees. Not just because of Mookie, but because the Dodgers haven’t won a legit WS in so long, they are due …. especially after Cora stole it from them in 2017.

Also I want to be able to chant “2K-9” when I’m at Yanks/Sox games 30 years from now. LOL

My – Not too long ago I wrote about how players are typically at their peak during their Age 27 season ….. and sure enough, Stanton’s best was his Age 27 season.

I certainly agree he’s underperformed, but considering the Marlins subsidy and how little the Yanks gave up for him, I think it was kinda expected he would decline.

Roger Beshens Football Slider. On center grip, throw like Football, Stiff Wrist. I just tried it, With my arm angle 40 inch drop and I can shape it with a turn or no turn. That non traditional slider changed the ML landscape big time. 2018 it all started, dozens had more K’s than hits, 1st time in ML history that happened. I believe over 50 guys in ML baseball for the 1st time in their career avg more K’s than hits. MLB should reward Roger for that.

Do people not understand that big market teams have fans outside of their markets? Other big markets. Medium markets. Small markets. Doesn’t get any bigger than Dodgers vs Yankees. And the fact that they haven’t met since 1981 in WS will make this even bigger. Casual fans more likely to watch it too. You not watching it is irrelevant.

@dodgersfan… Only transplants and/or casuals without a team would root for one of these teams if they aren’t in the market. I’m living in Japan and everyone wears LA hats but can’t name a single player outside Ohtani and mayyybe Yamamoto. I think that’s the case in America too.

I don’t know most of the Yankee players but I’m pretty sure that there are a lot more classy players on the Dodgers than just Mookie. To each their own on that definition but if you think that about the Dodger players I wonder what you’d say about certain Padre players unless of course you are a Padre fan.

Wow, I really didn’t think the Yankees had what it takes to make it to this point, but Mr. Juanderful and The Judge have spoken, and now we have two juggernauts in the World Series. Soto and Judge vs. Shohei and Betts.

Showtime Shohei Ohtani…man, 18-22 with runners in scoring position? Damn!!!!! I’m the same height and 30 pounds heavier than Ohtani, and everyone’s like “he’s all muscle, and you kinda got a beer belly.”This guy is just an insane, monster of a man who could very easily terrorize the Yankees (and whom I totally have a crush on-although he is married…what? I’m only human), surrounded by magical men like Edman and Kike Hernandez who, man have been clutch! I’m gonna have to say-and I’ve been wrong every time-but Dodgers in 6 games. I just can’t see the Yankees pitching overcoming this Dodger offense. Also Dave Roberts is a better manager than Aaron Boone, although so was Vogt.

I expect this series to go the distance, given how closely matched both teams are. The Yankees’ stronger starting pitching and experienced roster give them a slight edge, so I would predict the Yankees to win in 7 games, with their pitching holding up just enough to outlast the Dodgers’ dynamic offense.

Yeah Yanks and Dodgers have not met in WS in 43 years, way overdue for a historic rivalry. Mets would have been blow away in four games by the Yanks. At least this match-up is going to be competitive. Only good the Mets did was to knock out the stinking Phillies. As for all the Mets hype, “Silly Mets fans, pennants are for Other teams”

This is why MLB needs a major overhaul of how revenue is shared in MLB. Two teams from two of the largest TV markets in the country, with two of the largest payrolls in MLB are in the World Series. These two teams can buy just about any talent they want on the free agent market and stack their respective teams with proven, upper echelon talent every year and consistently content for a championship. By contrast small market teams like KC and Milwaukee have to consistently grow and develop players with the hope of being able to contend, only to have to trade them or see they walk away for nothing because they are unable to compete with the contacts that the Yankees or Dodgers can offer on the open market.

To start, MLB needs to level the playing field by taking control of the TV contract rights from the individual teams and negotiating a TV deal for the league as a whole just like the NFL does. All the TV revenue generated by the respective teams should be pooled and split equally amongst ALL of the teams in MLB.

With the financial trouble that Diamond Sports has right now, and with MLB having to handle the TV broadcasts for several MLB teams next year, now is the time to move towards full revenue sharing of TV contracts in MLB and start to move towards a full and complete sharing of ALL revenue in MLB.

Agreed! However, my Rangers would not have won without the big free agents we signed over a 2-3 year period. But now, we are handcuffed by the lack of revenue from having no TV income.

This will be the highest rated world series probably in the last 20 years. MLB isn’t overhauling anything.

Not to mention the Yankees haven’t won a world series in 15 years and the Dodgers haven’t won a legit world series in 36 years. Even with the highest payrolls.

MLB has a lot of problems, but tv deals are hardly the main concern.

Your best point is “These two teams can buy just about any talent they want on the free agent market and stack their respective teams with proven, upper echelon talent every year and consistently content for a championship. By contrast small market teams like KC and Milwaukee have to consistently grow and develop players with the hope of being able to contend, only to have to trade them or see they walk away for nothing:

MLB definitely needs to step in and create a system where teams are rewarded for keeping home grown star players.

MLB also needs to incentives players to sign long term contracts with said hometown team.

A spending limit should be implemented instead of cbt thresholds, but so should a spending floor.
Contracts should be capped to 10 year offers from opposing teams, but 12-14 year offers from home grown teams, no aav limit. Minor league pay and veteran minimum should be increased to offset limiting years and putting a somewhat cap on spending.

Wiffle ball: My question is: what does the overhaul accomplish? To me, the purpose of sports is competition, not financial parity. And, as the NBA and NFL have demonstrated, financial parity does not even remotely equate to competitive parity.

Can the MLB improve? Sure. I would love to see the Yankees make it to the World Series more than once every 15 years. But, regulating spending is not the answer, and based on other sports’ results, it seems to create exactly what many are trying to avoid: dynastic runs and definitely long-term uncompetitive teams.

It’s clear to everyone that in this series, the team that throws the Roger Beshens Football Slider the most effectively wins the World Series. This tradition has been on going since the Astros win in 2017. It’s quite ironic Beshens and Strom have been in touch throughout the entire 2024 season.

This is shaping up to be one of the greatest playoffs ever – certainly for matchups. Yankees/Royals. Dodgers/Padres. Mets/Phillies. Even the Tigers/Guardians. Storied franchises – most of whom are more than 120 years old – squaring up for their latest chapter. And now…Dodgers/Yankees?!

I can appreciate that some folks out there are crying foul that their teams don’t seem to operate on the same financial playing field as the bigger markets. I’d probably be doing the same if I were a lifelong Mariners fan (just an example – no shade). But even if all of the payrolls were capped at $10 million, wouldn’t players still want to do whatever they could to play for championships? Wouldn’t they collude to play together in hopes of a potential dynasty? Wouldn’t imbalances persist?

I believe that there are many more factors than money that players consider when choosing what team to play for. The Dodgers and Yankees, while both being big market teams, also both happen to be first class franchises. Same goes for many of the other historically successful teams. Not only are the pockets deeper for player acquisition, the facilities and transportation are five-star, the coaching and training staffs have the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art equipment (The Dodgers’ team doctor is Neal ElAttrache), the farm systems are deeper and the player development philosophies are more advanced. Soup to nuts – these are better organizations whose pervading philosophy is to win. Players want to play in places like that because their personal overall quality of life is better.

I can’t imagine how upset I might be if the owners of my favorite team were not fully committed to that ideal. White Sox fans – you all deserve better. As do the Angels and A’s and Rockies and Marlins. I agree – it isn’t fair. But the blame and spite of fans belong on the ownership groups who are not fully committed to uplifting their teams and their cities.

Any ill will directed at the teams that are succeeding because they have pushed in all of their chips…well…that resentment is borne of jealousy.

This World Series is everything that a non-jealous baseball fan could want…two great franchises with boatloads of history sporting superstar talent. We will be talking about this one for decades.

My PS to this analysis is that the financial structure of MLB rewards failure. The smaller market teams are effectively paid off to be mostly noncompetitive. The profitability of these franchises is guaranteed but at the expense of their fans. The answer is MLB dividing the revenue of the game in 30 equal shares and rewarding the successful teams. Effectively just the opposite of what is done today. Nobody should be surprised by failure when it is rewarded.

Wwe, mlb, nfl, nba, etc are rigged daily, for your entertaining view.
For example, in mlb it’s a team effort. Umpires, players, mgrs, are all in on the stage. You are watching a reality tv show, it’s just sports.
Some know, ahead of time, what the results will be. Most do not.
I came across a tv channel, called rigged sports. In nfl I have seen missed tackles, on purpose. I just did not know, that fielding errors, or, letting the ball go buy, not necessarily an error, are a big part of it. I used to think it was just the umpires. Now I know why, the mgr brings in the guy, who will blow the save.
Knowing that sports is scripted, I can relax and not take any of it serious.

I’ve paid less attention to NY, but the presence of Aaron Judge (drafted, developed, signed), Stanton (trade), and Soto (trade) indicates they did enough with their farm system.

LA has done what good teams do with their farm system. They draft, sign, develop, or trade players from their farm for players that help the major league team. They get results year after year.

Your assertion was so terrible that a Giants fan had to refute it.

Since 2019 the Yankees have struggled to win a pennant. A period marked by the acquisition of Matt Blake, Blakes unique skill to teach the Roger Beshens Football Slider was the reason for his hire. Concurrently teams like the Dodgers, Rays, Braves were also to master this technique around the same period. In the past half decade many teams have been teaching the Roger Beshens Football Slider, yet problems within the organization have hindered their progress. Despite this, numerous teams have achieved more than what the Yankees were expected to do.

I’m not a fan of either team ( understatement), but it will be interesting to watch them face- off. If the Dodgers continue to rely on Edman’s clean- up magic ( it won’t last), and have to use 7 pitchers per game, this Series could quickly end badly for them. Ohtani is great, but he won’t be enough.

By the way they also only use Edman as cleanup when Freeman is out of lineup and versus a LHP starter. He’s much better from right side vs left side, and has even hit RH versus certain RHP. I don’t think Edman needs clean up magic for the Dodgers to continue. I”m hoping for better overall series from Smith, Freeman and Teoscar to more than compensate Edman’s down production. Nobody can expect the same type of performance in WS. But stranger things have happened.

this may come down to which bullpen is more exhausted by game 4 or 5. both teams will need back-of-the-bullpen guys to pitch high-leverage innings and imo the yankees have the edge there. for all the star power this series may hinge on guys like jake cousins and mark leiter jr.

Should be a great series, and a lot of fun. Judge and Soto probably one of the best 1-2 combo of all time. Really respect their approach at the plate. So selective and yet so powerful. Dodgers have a pretty decent 1-2 combo of their own in Ohtani and Betts. Overall, I think that the Dodgers have a better overall lineup and slightly better bullpen, especially if Vesia and Graterol make it back which should hopefully offset the issues with starting pitching. Really hoping that Yamamoto, Flaherty and Buehler bring their A games.

My two cents worth as a lifelong Dodger fan is that I know the Dodgers are the better team.
That said, I have little trust that Dave Roberts will make the right moves to win the series. The team overcame his stupid decisions especially regarding the bullpen moves. Clearly Roberts and Prior are overtly trying to insert themselves into the game to make a name for themselves. It will be a miracle if they don’t blow out the bullpen by game 3 or 4 if they insist on using the bullpen this way every game. Start game 1 with Yamamoto or Buehler. Let them pitch into the 7th if they are rolling.

I beg to differ. If you have not seen how well Doc Roberts has been handling the pitching staff with only 3 starts at his command I don’t know what you have been watching. No one wants a bullpen game but it has been a necessity under the circumstances. Not only that but it has been successfully deployed in both the Padres series and the Mets series. Apparently Roberts haters remain so regardless of the facts. But I do agree with your first statement. Dodgers looking good.

It seems almost impossible the Dodgers advanced to the World Series after losing nearly two full rotations to injury. Certainly they can’t beat the Yankees being this handicapped. Can they?

I just think the Dodgers are the better team. The AL was weak this year, but the Yankees were the best team out of it. No one else remotely had a chance in the AL.

Honestly, as a Sox fan, I care little who wins, but that’s my two cents.

Pitching beats hitting….Dodgers starting rotation is on fumes and just doesn’t have enough for New York. That’s painful for me to say as a Red Sox fan. I’m rooting for LA but my inner gambler says Yankees in 6.

I’m just rooting to see Mookie make Yankees’ fans sad. I don’t allow myself schadenfreude in much, but I do allow myself to revel in the suffering of Yankee fans, particularly at the hands of Red Sox alums.
