With the Angels’ recent signing of left-hander Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year deal now officially announced, GM Perry Minasian spoke yesterday to reporters (including Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register) about the club’s 2025 rotation and their plans for the rest of the winter.
Of note, Minasian suggested that with the addition of Kikuchi and fellow offseason addition Kyle Hendricks to the club’s rotation mix, the Angels currently have those two veterans, Tyler Anderson, and Jose Soriano penciled into the first four spots in their rotation for 2025. Notably, that leaves left-hander Reid Detmers fighting for a spot in the rotation alongside less established arms like Chase Silseth and Jack Kochanowicz. 2024 was a brutal season for Detmers, as the lefty surrendered a disastrous 6.70 ERA across 17 big league starts.
Weak as that production was, however, Detmers’s underlying metrics suggest his performance may have been slightly better than it looks on paper. His 27.9% strikeout rate was actually the best of his career, while his 9.7% walk rate was certainly elevated, but more or less in line with his 2023 performance. Detmers’s 4.72 FIP was “just” 13% worse than league average by measure of FIP-, and some metrics were even more bullish on his underlying numbers. His 3.86 xFIP was actually 6% better than league average, and a 3.77 SIERA actually places Detmers 43rd among 138 starting pitchers who threw at least 80 innings out of the rotation this past season.
While underlying metrics that compared Detmers to Corbin Burnes (3.75 SIERA) and Gerrit Cole (3.79 SIERA) in 2024 certainly don’t tell the whole story by themselves, they do provide enough optimism about Detmer’s future that it’s a surprise to hear he isn’t guaranteed a rotation spot next year. After all, the lefty posted a solid 4.15 ERA and 3.97 FIP across 53 starts in 2022 and ’23, and is just a few years removed from being the Halos’ first-round draft pick when they selected tenth overall in 2020. With that being said, it’s easy to imagine Detmers’s performance after coming back to the majors back in September raising red flags in the front office’s mind. While he struck out an eye-popping 34.2% of opponents in five starts down the stretch, he also struggled badly with the long ball, surrendering 8 homers and an untenable 15.6% barrel rate.
Minasian also didn’t rule out making further additions to the club’s rotation. “We’ll continue to look, from a free agent standpoint, from a trade standpoint,” he said, as relayed by Fletcher. “If there’s an upgrade, from a rotation standpoint, we’ll look to do it.”
With that being said, it seems as though upgrades to the rotation may take a backseat to upgrading other areas of the roster as the Angels look ahead to the remainder of the winter. Specifically, Minasian noted that they’d like to add depth to their bench and bullpen while focusing on lengthening the lineup with another bat. The club has already added Jorge Soler as an everyday DH and Travis d’Arnaud poised to act as a backup to Logan O’Hoppe behind the plate, but holes remain in a lineup that posted just a 90 wRC+ that was 25th in baseball last year.
Nolan Schanuel, Luis Rengifo, and Zach Neto figure to have regular roles on the infield, with Schanuel in particular seemingly locking up first base. Neto is sure to be the everyday shortstop when healthy, but he could miss the start of the season after going under the knife earlier this month. Kevin Newman and Scott Kingery have already been brought in to shore up the club’s infield depth on the bench, but another infield bat could help lessen the club’s reliance on oft-injured Anthony Rendon while also backing up Neto early in the season.
There’s also room in the outfield for another bat. Taylor Ward figures to be the club’s everyday left fielder, and Mike Trout will of course be an everyday player in the outfield when healthy enough to take the field. Mickey Moniak and Jo Adell currently figure to platoon in right field when everyone’s healthy, but upgrading that spot in the lineup could improve the roster, particularly if the addition was capable of playing center at least occasionally to lessen the defensive workload on Trout.
One other possibility Fletcher floats is the Angels considering a trade of Anderson. Anderson came up in the rumor mill ahead of the trade deadline over the summer, but no deal ultimately came together as the Angels reportedly preferred to hold onto players controlled beyond the 2024 season. Given that hesitance just a few months ago, it’s unclear if trading Anderson is something the Halos would seriously consider this winter, and it would hardly be a surprise to see him stay put.
The veteran southpaw is entering the final year of his contract with the Angels in 2025 following a decent season in 2024 where he posted a solid 3.81 ERA despite lackluster peripherals. Even if clubs project him to post numbers closer to his 4.66 FIP and and 4.37 xERA next year, his ability to eat innings (179 1/3 frames across 31 starts in 2024) could make him an attractive back-of-the-rotation candidate to teams in need of pitching and a deal would clear the final year and $13MM of his contract off on the Angels’ books to address other areas of the roster.
Of course, moving Anderson would be a step backwards in terms of depth for an Angels club that has already parted ways with Griffin Canning and Patrick Sandoval this winter. Removing Anderson from the club’s rotation would leave them with Kikuchi, Hendricks, Soriano, and Detmers as their front four starters with Kochanowicz, Silseth, and depth options like Sam Aldegheri in the mix for the fifth spot. With that being said, it’s at least plausible the club could listen to offers on him if they were to land a third external starter to join Kikuchi and Hendricks in the Anaheim rotation next year, whether that be in trade or free agency.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Would be an angels thing to do to sell low on detmers and then becomes an all star on the braves
juggernaut
They can resign Griffen Canning since the Braves released him, and now he’s a Free Agent. They know him, so it would make sense to sign him to a lesser contract than he would have had before they traded him.
prov356
jug – If Canning agreed to play for free, I still wouldn’t want him. Canning has had years to show something and he hasn’t. The Angles tend to hang onto guys like him for years hoping for the big breakthrough based on peripherals, and it never comes. Time to move one.

I don’t know who the Angles are. I meant the Angels.

I also meant time to move “on”, not “one”. Sheesh. I ate too much yesterday.

The Angels’ rotation will be—as it always is—a sad state of affairs, which goes hand-in-hand with their position players.
I feel for Angel fans.

Hard to get good homegrown talent when there’s no scouting and wasting years hiring (in vain) for someone to literally make an app to display data that MLB already provides to all the teams, and have been providing apparently for years.

The Angels are the American League version of the Rockies. They are always expecting to contend but never actually do, and they also always refuse to tear it down and start over no matter how bad things get.

They did basically start a rebuild last year.
johnnyangel
Correct.
They experimented and let the kids play for once.
They discovered:
* Neto is a future star
* Soriano can be a starter
* Joyce can be a dominant closer
* Adell – after a LOT of patience – can finally hit and play defense
* O’Hoppe could be an All-Star if he doesn’t have to catch every inning every damned day until he’s gasping for air
Still lots of question marks with Detmers (inconsistency), Kochanowicz (low K rate), Schanuel (SLG). Also: will Moore be promoted aggresively?
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
That is not enough for a good team even if those 5 guys become all stars

Johnnyangel—
You’re better off counting on Shelley Fabres.
johnnyangel
Not “counting on” anybody.
Just stating that last year was indeed a rebuild year whereby they let the kids play.
Ariaga II
@johnnyangel, I think you watched a different Angels team than I last season.
Neto is good and I don’t believe there was question that he couldn’t be a star for the team. So I don’t think that’s something they discovered last season.
Soriano has come up through the minors as a starter, so I don’t think there was concern about him not being a starter. That being said he was shut down with arm fatigue with 100 innings this season, so that doesn’t bring a lot of confidence in his health
Joyce is a question mark, did you not see him get blasted in relief appearances? Yes, his fastball is electric, but he needs to develop another pitch that disrupts timing or has movement.
Jo Adell is serviceable for the time being, but don’t expect to see him long term. Yes, he played decent to start off the season but then regressed to his usual below average hitting. He’s nothing special right now.
O’hoppe is a great hitting catcher and will hopefully be a solid contributor for years to come.
The team overall is still terrible with big holes all over the place, mostly in the rotation and bullpen. Angels ownership/management have not shown any sort of ability to adequately staff the team or have much of a plan to fill through free agency or drafting well.
johnnyangel
@ Ariaga II Yes we must have been watching a different team.
I’ll give you one example.
If one makes a statement that “Joyce needs to develop another pitch which disrupts timing or has movement”, which he DID when he added his splinker, that shows me that person doesn’t pay much attention to the Angels.
Joyce allowed zero (!) runs in 26 of his last 28 appearances, including a 0.83 ERA in those 28 appearances.
He’s still a work in progress, but if one couldn’t see the signs of a dominant closer in his performances, I’m not sure what level of proof is needed.
So, yes, I guess I saw something differently from what you saw.
kingsfan1968
No excuses for owner Morono! But… having Trout and Rendon injured every year just adds insult to it!
seamaholic 2
Rengifo played more third than second last year. Just cut the bleeding with Rendon, pay him off to retire, which he will gladly do. Find a 2B who can hit a little. Gleyber Torres would look good.
El Kabong
Rendon’s remaining contract calls for two years and more than $77 million. There’s no chance he will give that up. Whether the Angels keep or release him, he’ll still be on the payroll for both years.
seamaholic 2
They could negotiate much of that into deferrals. Rendon hates coming to the park, always has, and doesn’t need a dime more anyway. And yes, from what we know of his personality he would probably agree.
fansincethe80s
Not a thing the MLBPA will allow.
kingsfan1968
Keep Rendon on the roster out of spite! I would rather see him on the bench for 2 years than pay him off to retire!
Rexhudler86
@seamaholic 2. You might as well keep him until neto comes back. I would say until atleast until half way of the season. The only thing is Newman numbers are bad at third. So when Newman starts, he’s at second base. Rengifo at third. When Rendon starts he’s at third, and Rengifo at 2nd. That could work until moore is ready or injuries.
johnnyangel
I actually think this is the plan. One last shot for Rendon until Moore is ready.
kingsfan1968
He gets his money either way! I would keep him on the bench out of spite! And if he becomes a detriment to the team they could suspend him , try to terminate his contract or reach a settlement!
Rexhudler86
@kingsfan1968. 100% you just keep him on the bench. Rengifo plays a alright 3rd base. He wants the angels to release him. He has played 2nd, and could play first in a pinch. Next year is probably the year they cut the losses. I don’t think he causes trouble he just doesn’t care. You get rid of him now he will retire, and get what he wants.

I say trade Detmers too but because he stinks, not because he’s wasting away in Anaheim. Just like Canning, he’s had plenty of time to consistently pitch well and he hasn’t. Time to let him explore other teams.
johnnyangel
Detmers stinks??
He’s had ONE bad season and he just turned 25.
His stuff is great and his underlying metrics are solid.
Good Lord, he’s the EXACT type of player you HOLD ON TO as you try to rebuild.
prov356
johnny – Detmers has had one GOOD season (2022), not one bad season. He pitched to a 6.7 ERA in 2024 with a 4-9 W/L record. His career ERA is just under 5 at 4.9. His career W/L is .364. I don’t care what the minutia peripheral stats say. Results are what matter and his are bad. 2022 was his only positive win record in his four years in the majors. Hanging onto guys like Detmers is exactly why the Angels haven’t made the playoffs in a decade.

nolan Ryan in his 1st 3 seasons, 3.32 ERA, 46 starts in 73 appearances. If that is a rough start, then what was Detmer’s start considered?

The franchise really needs Detmers to pitch to his potential.
It’s also nice to see guys like Caden Dana and George Klassen on the horizon. It’s been a long while since the Angels had sone young arms to dream in a bit.
Hopefully sone young guys get some development time then replace Anderson and Hendricks in the the second half of the season.
jbigz12
Angels haven’t really given you a chance to dream on many prospects with the way they pull them up.
Rexhudler86
@halosheavenjj. It’s definitely too early to give up on detmers. I wouldn’t mind signing lorenzen for the 5th starter. If trout can’t stay healthy we will be in a position to sell Anderson, Hendricks, lorenzen, and let the kids play. Ward could be another one to leave at the deadline to restock the farm. That should be enough depth coming back to give us a better shot
energel
Idk why the angels think they can upgrade a 63-99 team with a whole bunch of mid players at best
Rothbard
This is rebuild 101. They are buying flippable vets and giving their young guys a chance to get some big league reps.
energel
yeah, but then MLB is talking about how “they’re not slinking away after some rough seasons” as an article on MLB.com puts it
outinleftfield
Arte has never cared about winning, just putting enough stars on the field to draw fans. By stars he means positions players. The last starting pitcher he allowed the team to sign to more than a 3 year deal was in 2011. It simply is not possible to sign a top of the rotation starting pitcher in their prime to a 3 year deal.
He has gutted scouting and minimized baseball development money. That is why Minasian has drafted only players that are close to MLB ready like Joyce, Schanuel and Neto.
The Angels training facilities both at the major league level and in spring training are the worst in baseball. For several seasons the weight “room” at spring training was in a tent. I kid you not.
There will never be a complete rebuild even if the team needs it desperately because that means fans will stop coming to the park for a few years.
As long as Arte is the owner this is the most that will be done.
Trojan84
Finally, someone on this site speaks from a base of knowledge. If Arte had his way, the minor league players would live in tents, and the playing facility, workout rooms, etc., would be located at Junior High. He is easily the worst owner in baseball, but he is not precisely a giving human being. He fought more than any owner to keep minor leaguers from earning a decent wage, did not care that many players lived in substandard housing, and didn’t get me started on nutrition. Long ago, he gutted the scouting department. Everyone jumps on Perry: hey, what would you do if you worked for Arte? As for Rendon, I feel he is a rotten egg in the clubhouse, and the sooner he is shown the door, the better. 77 million be dammed. He got his money; go home! Nobody likes you, including your teammates. California Angels fan since 1970.
Rexhudler86
@trojan84. I don’t think Rendon is a problem in the clubhouse. He just got paid. The way to punish him is to keep him on the team as a bench player. Any team would sign as a vet minimum player question is will he even try to sign. Once neto comes back I think he spilts time with newman. The problem has been the health of the infield. Rengifo is a free agent after this year so if you trade him we need a 3rd baseman. That’s why i think you cut him next year and defer the money or just eat the last year.
Rexhudler86
@energel. Rangers had a 62 win season, and won the world series. They are getting depth which they didn’t have.
energel
so you’re saying the angels are winning the world series?
Rexhudler86
@energel. Not saying that, but everyone referencing the record is forgetting that trout only played 29 games. They addressed some big issues. If it doesn’t work out they can trade the 1 year deals. That’s still a rebuilding team, and they need help in that department. If trout plays a full year they should be a fringe playoff team, and I doubt they are done adding.
mikeyny
Kike Hernandez would be a great pick up for the Angels. Can fill in for Neto to start the season and spell Trout in CF. Insurance for Rendon as well.
carllafong
Newman will fill in at short. They need a third baseman and a second baseman. could trade for Lowe at second and Nolan Gorman to play third, or Baty from The Mets. They need another front end starter– Fried would be perfect.

Having a new GM and coach every other year has really hurt the Angels over the long run. The team needs to keep Minasian as GM, & let him continue building the team with his type of coaches and players, from the Major league team all the way down to Rookie Ball. Winning will cure all the current trash talking of the Angels system.
Aiden Awe
I agree, I don’t solely blame him for the downhill spiral the Angels are enduring. Perry did come from the Braves. Braves are very good at developing and drafting.
ClevelandSteelEngines
Arte Moreno bought the rights to Mike Trout from Lucius Needful and the side effect was a perpetually missing the playoffs and unsuccessfully improving the team no matter who or what he did!
cr4
Detmers needs to get out of Anaheim at this point. He still has a ton of upside and it’s becoming apparent he’s not going to fulfill it with the Angels
cookmeister 2
And why is it not Detmer’s fault?
Low IQ Angels Management
65-97, big 2 game improvement for the Halos in 2025. You can put it on the booooooooard, yes, yes!
carllafong
To be clear, the Angels have no third baseman or second baseman. Rendon is 35, can’t stay on the field and even when he does he hasn’t hit a homerun in a year and a half. Moore isn’t ready to play every day at 2nd. Trout can’t play CF any longer– that means he moves to left, so Ward will have to be traded. They cannot go into the season with a rotation of two 35-year olds, a 33-year old and Soriano who was shelved with a tired arm and who has had two TJ surgeries– plus Kochanowicz as a rookie. Detmers and Anderson should be traded. Moore needs at least a half a year in the minors, so trade for a second baseman and young third baseman. Nolan Gorman and Baty are both tradable options, Regnifo is always hurt, but a good trade chip.
Low IQ Angels Management
Don’t have a first baseman, CFer, RFer, #s1-4 starting pitchers, closer, set up man, lefty specialist either. This is the 1980s Seattle Mariners minus Randy Johnson, Mark Langston and Ken Griffey. Good times ahead.
kellin
Detmers needs to get out of his head. There’s only so much Angels pitching staff can do to help him. It’s clear he’s got issues since he started strong last season and completely lost the ability to pitch properly. I’d be willing to give him this year, but if he can’t trust his abilities, the Angels should just move him.
Minassian is finally building an actual culture for this team, something that has been lacking. I think we’ll see a difference this year due to Hendricks and D’Arnaud, and I think Adell’s performance at the end of the year is an indicator of better things to come, as long as the team gives him the opportunity.
johnnyangel
Jo Adell is the one I am curious to see again in 2025.
He eliminated his leg kick and went full-time to a toe tap in July, and the results were very encouraging.
From July 12th forward (170 PA’s) his numbers were
.253/.341/.440
outinleftfield
The 1st game Adell didn’t use that high leg kick was July 31st against the Rockies. Then he got hurt on September 6th in Texas and was out the rest of the season. He hit .241 with a .739 OPS in those 108 AB. Encouraging, but such a small sample size that there is nothing you can take from it. His April was much better and he was still using the leg kick.
johnnyangel
Fair enough. But *something* changed.
His K% dropped and BB% increased significantly from the 1st half to the 2nd half, and his BA improved drastically as a result.
I’ve been as frustrated as anyone at Adell’s glacial progress, but it certainly *seemed* like the light bulb – finally – came on last July.
outinleftfield
The Angels will keep either Adell or Moniak, but not both. Which do you want?
Rexhudler86
@outinleftfield. Wouldn’t surprise me if they put ward at 1st or it’s definitely a option.
johnnyangel
I thought Minasian said they might keep all 5 outfielders?
His comments from a few weeks ago:
“Minasian said they haven’t planned how much Soler will play in the outfield just yet and could see a scenario where they keep all five outfielders on the roster.
‘We’ll see where it goes’ Minasian said. ‘It’s definitely possible we keep all five.’ “
johnnyangel
@ Rexhudler86 I would love to see the Angels utilize Ward’s positional flexibility in the same way the Dodgers move their players around.
Rexhudler86
@Johnnyangel. I think that’s the plan unless something changes. Schanuel can lose some at bats. I don’t think soler touches the field unless injuries happen, but we have lugo. Same with the infield we got moore, as the backup plans. That’s the best plan to give everyone a decent chance at playing time, with kingery just being a pinch runner defensive replacement. At the deadline we can trade ward. We have to see what moniak can be with decent playing time otherwise we will need a center.
outinleftfield
Minasian said in his last interview, the one quoted in this article, that while he might occasionally play in the OF to give “one of the guys” a rest that Soler would be the everyday DH. We all know that guy is Trout. He also intimated that Trout would not be playing CF, so that means Moniak or Adell would be. Moniak is much better defensively.
outinleftfield
Ward is an OF. 960 games in the Of and 91 elsewhere
Rexhudler86
@outinleftfield. Doesn’t that mean perry is implying ward is playing first. Trout can’t play right. Soler can’t play center. I know trout doesn’t like to dh, seems like left is his spot.
outinleftfield
He said they were counting on seeing improvement from Schanuel.
I think its going to be Trout in corner LF, Ward on other side, Moniak in CF. Adell hitting the bricks or traded.
Rexhudler86
@out. I’m taking it as he needs to step up. He has said similar things about Rendon having to earn a spot which currently he has until neto comes back. This is all current speculation if it stays the same, and everyone stays healthy. I wouldn’t mind schanuel losing at bats early in the season to see how adell, and moniak do. That’s also probably the best lineup they could run out. They have a little more flexibility now which is a good thing.
Low IQ Angels Management

Low IQ Angels Management
Yes, the culture is: try not to get on base much, keep our era around 5 and lose often… He’s a genius!! Dodgers will be hiring him soon.
outinleftfield
Kikuchi is a step up from Canning, Detmers, and Sandoval last season. He will pencil in at #3 in this rotation. While Hendricks isn’t an upgrade, he was better than Canning and a rebound to his 2021-2023 numbers would make him a solid #5 starter for 130 innings or so. That still leaves a gaping hole in the rotation that Detmers, Silseth, and Kochanowicz can’t fill. All they are good for is to fill in when injuries hit and hope they can eat 100 innings between them at an ERA under 5.
Soler is a huge step up at DH. The Angels had a -2.5 WAR and 79 OPS+ at that position. Soler had a 1.1 WAR and 121 OPS+.
d’Arnaud is an upgrade over Thaiss at backup catcher. 103 OPS+ vs 83. 1.1 WAR vs 0.6. The difference is even larger on defense.
Neto will be out to start the season so that is going to hurt. Newman is a decent bench piece and fill in short term, but long-term that would be a disaster.
All in all the Angels have improved about 2-3 wins. Enough to keep them from losing 100, but very far from contending. If Trout and Rendon play 120+ games and a few others play up to their potential then maybe the Angels could sniff .500. What a sad position to be in as an Angels fan.
BigA 3
The rebuild has started but the fruition will take time. 2025 will be better but look for the kids Dana-Klasse-Moore-Cortez-Lugo-Rada etc late 2025 and beyond. 75-80 wins 2025

Why no mention of Caden Dana as an option? He’s their top prospect and he started several games down the stretch.
outinleftfield
Dana didn’t make those 3 starts because he was ready, he made them out of necessity. He went about 3 IP in each and got spanked. He needs to go back to AA and maybe he could take a spot in the rotation by the ASG.

Invite some Veteran players to spring training and sign them for cheap if they can still play. Keep Anderson if they are serious about making the playoffs. They can always trade him at the deadline if they are out of it.
Low IQ Angels Management
What a substantive comment. What veteran players? Name 3, we’ll wait.
Halofan4life.
Why not go for it for once? Sign Burnes to lead your staff for the next 5/6 yrs. He’s from Central Ca and grew up Angel fan. Sign Adames 5/6. He can play short until Neto gets back, then move him to 3rd. Trade TA, ward and maybe one of their younger pitchers to the cubs for Bellinger. He’s will be starting CF and backup 1st. Sign Chapman 1yr deal. He can the setup to Joyce or other way around. Then you got a team that should be able to compete with that pitching staff and lineup where you then go after the Japanese Pitcher, Roki.
SoCal baseball would be fun to watch with both the Dodgers and Angels battling it out for some time .
If Arte wants to get his respect back from the fans, he needs to open up his checkbook and sign players longer than 3/4 contracts. I understand it’s a business but he can do so much better for the fans. It’s a pipe dream I know .

Arte doesn’t care about the fans, but otherwise, sounds good!

Trade Arte for an owner who knows what their doing.

MLBTR needs to hire editors
Deeds is a dreadful writer. “Weak as that production was” is not proper English! You can’t just leave “as” out at the beginning of the sentence because you feel like it. Correct grammar isn’t optional, and if you want more people to pay for your site, write better.
Low IQ Angels Management
Away put your weapon. Strong with the grammar police this one is.

If Cubs eat enough salary….Detmers and Adell plus for Bellinger?
Low IQ Angels Management
Detmers and Adell for Bellinger and Angels take all his salary and it would still be a major coup for the Angels.

Moore could be the next young stud…I bet Christian Moore wins 2nd base this spring. If so, look for Rengifo at third unless Rendon re-invents himself.
