GM David Forst: A’s Focused On Trades, Upgrading MLB Roster

By Mark Polishuk | November 2, 2024 at 2:53pm CDT

While the Athletics’ rebuild isn’t over, it does appear that the club has moved out of purely a selling phase as the 2024-25 offseason begins (and the team’s temporary tenure in Sacramento begins).  A’s general manager David Forst told The San Francisco Chronicle’s John Shea that his front office has already at least touched base with every team except the Dodgers and Yankees, and that “any trade activity we’re discussing is about improving the major league team in 2025, not about trading major league players for prospects.”

This isn’t exactly a new stance, as Forst said in July prior to the trade deadline that the A’s were somewhat putting the brakes on moving any established trade chips.  While this could have been construed as some gamesmanship to get rival suitors to up their bids, the Athletics ended up keeping such notables as Brent Rooker, Mason Miller, and JJ Bleday, despite significant interest from other teams.  The A’s did trade Paul Blackburn (arbitration-controlled through 2025) to the Mets and a longer-term asset in Lucas Erceg to the Royals, though Erceg’s team control through the 2029 season is somewhat undermined by the fact that he is already 29 years old.

While the Athletics had a 69-93 record in 2024, things seemingly started to click for the team’s young core as the season developed.  After a brutal 37-61 record in the first half, the A’s had an even 32-32 mark after the All-Star break, and even delivered a 29-21 mark over the months of July and August.  Rooker was one of the better hitters in the entire league, and Bleday, Lawrence Butler, and Shea Langeliers all showed some intriguing potential elsewhere in the lineup.

The weak links were pretty obvious, as Shea writes that the Athletics’ offseason wish list includes upgrading a porous defense, a starting pitching staff that was one of the worst in baseball, and some help at third base.  A whopping 10 players suited up at the hot corner for the A’s over the course over the 2024 season, but this revolving door combined for a sub-replacement -0.6 bWAR (ranking 28th of 30 teams in third-base production).

As always, Forst will be limited in what he can spend on any new players, though how much the A’s might spend on free agents in general is still up in the air due to the uncertainty surrounding their relocation.  “We have to be active in the trade market until we get a clear sense of how free agents are going to view the possibility of coming to Sacramento.  That’s been the impetus for our reaching out to clubs ahead of free agency starting,” Forst said.

With this in mind, the A’s might well be one of the more aggressive teams in the early stages of free agency, with Forst and company perhaps being keen on acquiring any non-tender candidates or unwelcome contracts that other teams have on their books.  The Athletics have roughly $35.5MM on the books for 2025 (according to RosterResource) though none of that money is actually guaranteed, so some trades or non-tenders of their own could reduce that number.  This gives the A’s some relative flexibility in terms of payroll space, as Forst has said the club is prepared to spend beyond its $63.1MM payroll from 2024.

What concerns me about this team is their plan to build an open stadium in Las Vegas. We Rangers had an open stadium in North Texas for years, and once we built a covered one, not only did we win the World Series, but attending games in the summer became enjoyable. When I watched the Las Vegas AAA team, the Area 52s Aliens (or something similar), I would always pay for the air-conditioned seats. However, after they moved to a fully open park, I stopped attending games when I visit Vegas. The A’s will never make the playoffs without players willing to play in 120+ degrees!!!!

Most Saturday and Sunday games, games before a travel day and games serving as the first leg of a double header, are played in the afternoon. So to his point, you need guys willing to play in the heat. Or you need to change your scheduling and then get guys willing to give up their weekend evenings and travel on short rest.

They can play Saturday at night. That’s not unusual. Sunday and get-away games are an issue. And the average high at the end of May is still only 95. That’s pretty comfortable in LV.

And maybe this will finally result in them scheduling less April games in the cold-weather states.

Not a LV resident, but very pro-LV. I’m looking forward to catching some RS and Raider games out there. I’ve attended some minor league games there a long time ago, and had a great time.

Don’t care one way or the other for Fisher. But I’m not a big fan of fans that don’t attend games, but expect a lot of spending.

Fisher did everything he could to build a new stadium and keep the team in Oakland. His dream was to bring a World Series to Oakland and Thao made sure his dream, your dream and my dream was crushed. He pursued five different Bay Area sites all at an operating loss directly to his pocket just to make sure the legacy of the A’s would remain in Oakland. Thao is the villain. Fisher is the victim.

Not sure if you live in/near Oakland, but anybody who does who thinks it would be wise for Thao or any other mayor to spend any city money on a stadium for a billionaire is nuts. There are so many other priorities for Oakland to improve the lives of residents than spend public money on a stadium.

Fisher is hardly a victim. He could have put up more of his own money if he truly cared about Oakland.

I don’t know if you are being tongue and cheek, or if you really mean this. One of my close friends was an attorney for the city of Oakland and Alameda County during the process, she was intimately involved. She is a calm, gentle person, but she was furious at the end of the negotiations, after John Fisher did a dog and pony show with Oakland and Alameda. He never intended to build a stadium there, and just played games with them. I trust my inside source. You are way off base.

The team showed signs it can compete. They can move some blocked prospects for ML upgrades. They should be looking at guys with multiple years of control back in any deal though.

Anyone who thinks that the As can’t compete in Sacramento did not watch them in the last half. They have a talented (but small) core. They have a pristine payroll. Langeliers, Wilson, Gelof and Bleday is a pretty promising up the middle combo and Rooker and Butler combined for a 8.6 WAR. So they’re basically missing corner IFs and one corner OF. Those are available everywhere.

Pitching will require upgrades and that requires better FA choices than Stripling and Wood. Proven FA starters will shy away from signing initially, but what happens in Feb/March when some of the Lance Lynn/Kyle Gibson/Montas/Pivetta/Quintana/Lorenzen layer of FA pitchers are looking for pillow one year deals? The As can load up with $8m to $12m deals and flip them if they’re out of it.

I can easily see the As looking very competitive on opening day.

          Pristine payroll?

Look if Oakland adds 100 million to their payroll in 2025.sure they could compete. But what are the odds they actually do that? Somewhere between slim and none i think.

Of course they’re past the ‘sell ‘ stage – they’re also past the ‘sign a handful of FA’ too; as to trades, you bet that every player & their agent with any leverage will have a ‘no Sacramento’ protection in their contract. Bush league team playing in a bush league stadium.

Ticket sales for the A’s have already been robust. It’s a small park so less supply and more demand. Plus, the good people of Sacramento are excited about MLB in their town, if only for 3 years.
So more revenues means more to spend. They’re going to surprise a lot of people next year. I could see the A’s and Giants making a deal or two; a guy like David Villar, who’s had a ton of success in Sacramento, could really take off there.
