A’s Looking To Add Third Baseman, “Wouldn’t Rule Out” Another SP Addition

By Nick Deeds | December 14, 2024 at 7:26pm CDT

7:26pm: The A’s inquired after Bohm with the Phillies, according to a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, but Philadelphia’s request for star closer Mason Miller in return for Bohm’s services reportedly ended those discussions.

5:49pm: As the Athletics gear up to play the 2025 campaign in their temporary home of West Sacramento while waiting on a more permanent move to Las Vegas, they’ve made an effort to put a more competitive product on the field after showing signs of progress with a 32-32 record after the All-Star break during their final season in Oakland. Those efforts to bolster the roster started when they inked right-hander Luis Severino to a three-year deal and continued today when they landed left-hander Jeffrey Springs in a five-player trade with the Rays earlier today.

The addition of Severino and Springs to the top of the A’s rotation adds some credibility to the club entering 2025 after the club’s starters struggled to a 4.76 ERA that was a bottom five figure in the majors last year. Severino and Springs will front a rotation that currently also figures to feature JP Sears, Mitch Spence, and Joey Estes on Opening Day, but club GM David Forst indicated to reporters (including Martin Gallegos of MLB.com) that he “wouldn’t rule out” adding another starter to the mix. In addition to continuing to weigh a potential third rotation addition, Forst suggested (as relayed by Gallegos) that he intends to explore both the trade and free agent markets for a potential third base addition.

The A’s significant additions and newfound willingness to commit to a higher payroll come with off-the-field concerns attached in addition to desire to improve the roster on the field. Reporting earlier this week indicated that the A’s would run the risk of a grievance from the MLB Players Association if they don’t spend 150% of their revenue sharing money on MLB payroll. With the A’s reportedly expected to rake in $70MM or more in revenue sharing, that means they’ll need a payroll of $105MM or more for luxury tax purposes in order to avoid risking a grievance from the players’ union. After today’s trade to land Springs, RosterResource projects the club for an $88.5MM luxury tax payroll in 2025. That still leaves around $15MM in budget room for luxury tax purposes before they reach that $105MM benchmark, which ought to leave the door open for the club to another addition or two.

In the rotation, even a back-of-the-rotation veteran such as Andrew Heaney or Kyle Gibson (who the A’s were previously connected to prior to the Springs deal). would likely eat up most if not all of that $15MM. It’s at least theoretically possible the club could look to spend beyond that, however. Previous indications have suggested that the club was targeting a payroll in the $100MM range for 2025. Given that RosterResource’s projection for the club actual payroll in 2025 in terms of cash paid out is just over $64MM, that would leave substantially more room to spend than if the A’s are targeting a payroll in the $100MM range for luxury tax purposes. That could make both the addition of a back-end starter and a notable salary at third base feasible.

Turning to the hot corner, the position has been the focus of a number of different clubs in the rumor mill this winter. The Cubs dealt third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Astros just yesterday, and Houston’s longtime third baseman Alex Bregman remains one of the most coveted players on the free agent market. Meanwhile, the Cardinals have made clear their intentions of dealing Nolan Arenado this winter. The Angels, Tigers, Yankees, and Astros are among the other teams known to be in the market for third base help, while the Red Sox and Padres remain on the periphery of the market as teams with established third basemen who have been connected to potential third base options like Bregman and Arenado as solutions at other positions.

It’s nearly impossible to imagine a top-tier free agent like Bregman or a veteran with no-trade protection such as Arenado choosing to play out a long-term deal in West Sacramento, but that doesn’t mean the A’s are completely out of luck if they hope to add a third baseman to their roster this winter. Alec Bohm of the Phillies is one frequently-discussed trade candidate at the hot corner, and Diamondbacks veteran Eugenio Suarez has seen his name percolate in the rumor mill as another possible trade chip. Meanwhile, Jorge Polanco, Paul DeJong, and Yoan Moncada are among the potential third base options available in the lower tiers of the free agent market, and it’s possible that a club with an infield surplus such as the Blue Jays or Orioles could make someone like Davis Schneider or Ramon Urias available in trade.

True that, but no point of trading their core right now. They are building something here. Does not make sense to move their elite closer. The AL west is wide open and right now the A’s are looking a lot better than some AL west teams.

      Miller for Bohm? LOL

Mason Miller is available …. for Aidan Miller and Andrew Painter. Phils should reject that as quickly as the A’s rejected Bohm.

Instead, A’s should sign a free agent as their third baseman, to a three-year-deal, Ha-Seong Kim! Blow away the competition with three year, $30 million deal. No opt-outs. You heard it here first!

They got 15 million left before reaching the 105 MM payroll they need to meet, so it works out for them. What do you think about Gio Urshela for the A’s?

Urshela got one and a half million from the Tigers last year on a one year deal, Same terms would be ok, but less fun. In that price range, Jose Iglesias and Donovan Solano are also options. Interesting fact, both Ursela and Solano are Colombians. Any of the three would only be decent if they think Darrell Hernaiz could steal the job. Sign Ha Seong Kim for three years and then prospect Tommy White wll be ready to take over. Plus HSK is versatile.

Kim’s main value is he plays a rock solid middle infield. Moving him to 3rd kind of defeats the purpose.

A’s can use him at both 3B and short. Probably not at 2B. When you look at the free agents that meet their spending needs and limited, he is a logical free agent. Otherwise, maybe Jose Iglesias for two million and another starting pitcher at ten million.

Moves to a smaller market and will face a union grievance if they don’t spend.

Will now spend just enough to avoid a grievance.

The A’s were a large market team that decided the way to maximize profits was to trim payroll and cry poor.

This was copied by large market teams such as Miami & Tampa.

The Phillies were getting revenue sharing money after they moved into Citizens Bank Park. Randy Levine of the Yankees went off on them in the New York Times about it and the Phillies shortly after shipped Bobby Abreu to the Yankees for nothing.

      Action

First, as noted in this and many other articles, A’s have no choice if they want to keep revenue and avoid litigation.

Second, the goal was to be unpopular in Oakland so that fans would let them move. Now the goal is to be popular in Sacramento to better extort taxpayer money from Vegas and Nevada.

Looking forward to three years of Sacramento MLB baseball, but not defending Fisher.

I understand that they’re probably just boosting the payroll to avoid a grievance, but I’d be irritated if I was an A’s fan in Oakland and saw them actually investing in the on field product immediately after leaving.

Someone will inevitably blame the fans for the team moving in the first place, but no matter which side you’re on it’s probably not a good look (even though I love the core they’ve assembled even before this offseason).

150% is criminally low for the A’s payroll. It should be 100% revenue sharing and ownership has to match 100% of revenue sharing towards payroll for players.

No reason A’s can’t run a 140 mill payroll when the leagues kicking in half the payroll.

Also, they’ll kick the tires on Yoan Moncada for like 5 mill at 3B

They might sign both or one of Patrick Sandoval and/or John Means to the typical 2 years 1 recover 1 play deals pitchers get. Call it an “investment” but keep the investment low for a pitcher.

They could look to take a flier on Alex Verdugo to replace Seth brown in LF, trade Rooker at peak value, and bring in Eloy Jimenez to replace Rooker at DH.

That should get them to the spending limit requirement.

Lmao Eloy Jimenez can’t replicate what Rooker can do. Rooker is going to hit bombs in sacramento. No way they trade him.

They have a solid core with Butler, Rooker, Miller, Bleday, Langeliers. Why the hell would you trade away Rooker right now? It doesn’t make sense to get Springs and Serevino, then trade away Rooker.

          Sure it does.

Cause the A’s are cheap and want cheap contracts. Rooker is only going to get more expensive via arb

He’s projected at 1 year 3.5 mill and another good season he’s looking at 5-6 mill after 3 straight dominate seasons at the plate

Any sane team would keep him

But the A’s are the A’s and are cheap. After being forced to spend and giving severino his contract they’ll cut costs in future years else where (rooker, miller)

You’re talking about a franchise who’s treating 105 mill like it’s the first cba threshold and don’t seem too include to spend past it.

          Why would you?

Sane teams wouldn’t trade Rooker he’s cheap

          Why would the A’s?
They’re cheap and being forced to spend money. You think they’re gonna keep guys getting expensive via arb like Rooker and Miller? Nope. They’ll spend money and ship off guys getting expensive for cheap contracts like they’ve always done.

The 105 mill isn’t a floor it’s a ceiling cba threshold type number to the A’s who obviously don’t want to spend past it for whatever reason.

Good point, but now the MLBPA is on their asses to meet higher payroll and the A’s have said they will slowly increase it. Can keep Rooker to meet the payroll and you get a veteran guy that can lead the younger guys.

The 105 MM is just the beginning bro. Revenue sharing is going to increase, so the payroll will have to go beyond 105 MM. They will have to retain players to meet the higher payroll. Sure they can let Miller and Rooker go, but they will still have to pay players. Solution? Extend Rooker and Miller.

Agreed but it’s only great for baseball if teams treat it as a floor not a ceiling cba threshold

When 105 mill is treated like the 241 cbt threshold that’s a bad thing for baseball.

Which is why it should be 100% rev sharing matched with 100% team funds.

140 mill buys a lot more than 105 mill

Perhaps the A’s could stroke Bregman’s ego by showing him he could probably put up video game numbers for the next 3 years in a AAA stadium like Semien and Guerrero did when Toronto played in Buffalo.

More realistic is probably Gio Urshela on a two year deal

AAA stadiums don’t have smaller dimensions than major league ones, just fewer fans. The Sacto stadium is not particularly hitter friendly.

LOL add castellanos and maybe you get closer. They won’t do it though. A’s have a solid core. Bohm plus a pitcher for Seth Brown, Soderstrom, and a high level prospect.

Castellanos has negative value at this point. 2/$40 million left on that deal. Although I suppose if the As merely want to add payroll in the form of short deals, maybe there’s some. meat on that bone.

Ranger Suarez could be another name for the A’s in a trade like that, but I doubt they want to move Miller. Bro is too elite to move, especially with the recent additions and upcoming solid core of rooker, langeliers, butler, bleday, etc

Look at Bohms WAR on BR for 2023 and 2024.
They are 0.4 and 3.0 respectively

His offensive statistics look similar but a big difference in WAR. What causes the difference? That’s why WAR is just one stat there are many more to consider plus the eye test from human beings. Just like total errors by a player doesn’t tell you about their overall range

Depends what you think of Bohm and whether you think Miller can stay healthy. I don’t like Bohm very much, but value wise, he was worth quite a bit more than Miller last season. Relief pitchers should always be on the market for rebuilding teams, but if I’m the A’s I go for major league ready prospects not a 28 year old with two years of control.

Take a look at the depth charts across the league, there aren’t a lot of good options at 3B. It makes that Arenado contract look really good, and a player like Yoan Moncada worth looking into. Be interesting to see what they come up with.

Bohm was considerably more valuable than Miller last year, and MM is made of glass. People get too excited about closers. Except for a VERY small list of guys, their performance tends to change dramatically year to year and they’re nearly always replaceable given how little they play. I don’t think Bohm is actually a 3.5 win player and he’s only got 2 years left, but if I did, I’d do that if I were the A’s.

Mason Miller isn’t eligible to be a FA till 2030 according to BR. Despite their up and down years RPs are more valuable than most position players and he has an inexpensive salary

As an e.g. CLE doesn’t make the playoffs without Clase big year

Definitely sounds like you’re a PHI fan.

PHI would probably be better off keeping Bohm and trading Castellanos. They would have to include some money.
There a lot of teams that need to upgrade their offense

PHI could improve their OF defense, offense isn’t really their problem. Not hitting with RISP in the offseason will derail every team
It sounds like PHI could get Hoskins back from MIL and put Harper back in the OF. It would cost some prospects but not their best ones

See what happens when you threaten a baseball owner’s source of revenue? They actually do things. Too many idle owners collecting paychecks and not improving their teams. It’s so frustrating. The league should have stepped in ages ago to fix this issue, but fans are the last thing they care about. First is the league, owners, then players in that order. Fans barely register a blip on the radar for the league and teams.
