Mozeliak: “It’s My Intention To Try” For Arenado Trade

By Mark Polishuk | December 9, 2024 at 8:06pm CDT

8:06pm: At least a trio of “mid-market” teams have reached out to the Cardinals about Arenado’s availability, writes Katie Woo of the Athletic. She adds that the Yankees do indeed have interest in the star third baseman, though it’s not known if Arenado would waive his no-trade rights to go to the Bronx.

6:17pm: Nolan Arenado’s name has been floated as a natural trade candidate since the Cardinals are trying to reduce payroll to some extent, and perhaps aren’t making a full-fledged run at contention.  Despite the many obstacles involved in moving Arenado, Cards president of baseball operations John Mozeliak outright stated “It’s my intention to try” to move Arenado this season when speaking today with Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat (links to X), Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and other reporters.  A trade could come relatively soon, within the next 7-10 days but probably not during the Winter Meetings.

It is rare to see any executive be so forthcoming in discussing a player’s trade availability, particularly a player who is still under contract for the next three seasons.  However, even as Mozeliak recently walked back the idea of 2025 as a pure rebuilding year for the Cardinals, it seems as though the team would like to open up the third base spot for younger players, in addition to getting some of Arenado’s salary off the books.

Arenado has a full no-trade clause, so he ultimately has the final say over where he plays in 2025 and beyond.  The fact that Mozeliak feels a trade is relatively close would imply that Arenado has already provisionally agreed to a deal to a particular team or to a few teams, so now the Cardinals are sorting through the best offers from this team or teams.  It is already known that Arenado is even willing to move off third base if that’s a better roster fit for a particular club, though it would seem unusual for the 10-time Gold Glover to move away from his accustomed position.

Beyond the no-trade protection, Arenado is owed $74MM over the three remaining years of his contract, though $10MM of that figure is covered by the Rockies as per the terms of the trade that sent Arenado from Colorado to St. Louis during the 2020-21 offseason.  The Cards could attempt to take on another unfavorable contract as salary offset, though that wouldn’t much help the club’s bigger-picture plans.

Finding a trade partner to absorb all of that $64MM would be easier if Arenado was still in his prime All-Star form, though his numbers have fallen off in the last two seasons.  Arenado has hit .269/.320/.426 with 42 home runs in 1247 plate appearances since Opening Day 2023, which is still above average (104 wRC+) production, yet not at his past standard.  His Isolated Power metric plummeted to .123 in 2024, the lowest of his career and drastically below his .241 average in the previous 11 seasons.

Position change notwithstanding, Arenado’s market could be helped by the fact that the pickings are a little slim for teams looking for third base help this winter.  Alex Bregman is easily the best option available in free agency, and the Phillies’ Alec Bohm might be the top third baseman available on the trade front.  If a club feels a change of scenery can produce a bounce-back year for Arenado, a trade might be possible, provided that Arenado is equally enthusiastic about this new location to okay a deal.  Reports indicate that the Yankees are one team that has been approached by the Cardinals about Arenado, though New York’s level of interest isn’t known.

Speaking of Cardinals players with no-trade protection, Miles Mikolas told Goold that he would prefer to stay in St. Louis for the final year of his contract.  Mikolas is owed $16MM in 2025, and finding a taker at that full price could be tricky anyway since Mikolas struggled to a 5.35 ERA over 171 2/3 innings last season.  While the 36-year-old still brings plenty of durability, the Cards might prefer such an innings-eater in their own rotation, since the team has already parted ways with Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson.

I hope Arenado refuses any trade for 2025 and holds Mozeliak and the Cardinals to his $30+ million contract for the entire next season!!!
Stick it to Mozeliak for not being truthful & upfront several years back!!!!!!!!

Mozeliak lied to Arenado to get him to “Opt into” his contract instead of opting out.
Mozeliak told Arenado he would always be playing on a contending team in St. Louis!!

For 2026, Arenado won’t have to deal with the proverbial liar as in John Mozeliak who will be out of the Cardinals organization.
Arenado will be able to deal with Chaim Bloom who will work things out for the best for both Arenado and the St. Louis Cardinals!!!!

Mozieliak is purposely showing his hand with saying that his intentions were to pursue a trade involving Arenadob.the cardinals use to keep what their intentions were for any offsrason kept to their selves & not reveal to any of the other teams what their plans were. Buy, now they have been openly talking about doing this & that without any care in the world. If they are gonna trade Arenado then get it done already. but, Milelas would choose to stay in the Lou to pitch. he hasn’t helped is since he pitched in 2018 why would he start now. with being OK with a trade?..I only see no saying he sees the cards as being competitive in 2025 trying to boost ticket sales. he knows what the cards are going to look like. Competitive isn’t the word he should be using. more like lost is how I see them being in 2025!

While I cannot deny the comment had a hint of sexism, it is nowhere near a “misogynistic comment”.

Did it sound like I was displaying hatred towards women, or making a joke and therefore a statement not to be taken too seriously to begin with?

I know when my wife has poked fun at my gender I never got my panties in a twist (see what I did there?) about it

If Haniger is involved in the trade it’s the equivalent of the Cards eating $15M. They get the long term cost savings and the M’s get an everyday third baseman closer to his true market value over the next three years. I would think that and a couple low-to-mid tier lottery prospects could get it done since it’s essentially a salary dump. The M’s might as well lean into playing defense behind this starting rotation by acquiring the best defensive third baseman of his generation. Yes he’s absolutely past his prime, but if he’s a league average hitter and can still play above average defensively it’s an upgrade at the position. At a three year commitment and the possibility to transition to first base in the future, he’s also a bridge to the next young core of infielders that are a year or two away.

No leverage to lose. Everyone knows the Cards have given up and this is a obvious contract you would love to dump. Is lying and saying we love Nolan going to get teams to offer better trades. He’s awesome. Our goal is the world series. We are going to build around Nolan. Teams will be up to whatever he is worth no matter what Mo says. Only leverage would be if only 1 team really wanted him.

They also said they don’t need to dump Arenado’s salary.

They would still prefer to trade Arenado, but don’t misunderstand the situation.

Decided on a trade sounds better than requested. They have exit conversations. The feeling is probably mutual that it’s best he is traded. If you want to win St Louis isn’t the place anymore. You wanna stay here and finish out your career rebuilding or you want me to work on trade? Who would you consider going to and who is absolutely a no?

I love your optimism and hope that’s what is happening, but Arenado “requested” Colorado traded him to specific teams forcing them to take an extrememly lackluster return. My personal opinion is to judge by history and Arenado is starting to look like he has a pattern of expecting the grass to be greener then forcing his employer’s hand in the hope that eventually he’ll be right…

@spud with another bad take. He’s not going to the HoF lol. Rolen was looked at as borderline, and he’s got 15 war on him. I’d maybe give a slight edge to arenado on d, MAYBE. Arenado played most of his career in Colorado though, so even his counting stats don’t really count as much.

@TigersLoveCinnamon WAR is meaningless. The fact of the matter is, no one went to MLB games to watch Scott Rolen play. He got in because of analytical nerds. A HOF player should be a main attraction for fans to see. Arenado is a house hold name and Rolen isn’t

@Tigers Rolen played 17 seasons to Arenado’s current 12. Rolen has 1 top 5 MVP finish in all those yrs. Arenado has had 4 top 5 MVP seasons and 2 top 10.

Arenado has been the one of if not the best 3B for most seasons of his career. This isn’t to take anything away from Rolen, Arenado has been a far more dominant presence.

Millions of people went to games to watch Scott Rolen play. At his peak, he was an incredible talent on offense and defense for several years. If he stayed healthy, he would have been a 1st ballot HOF. Saw them both and Rolen was WAY better than Arenado.

Maybe it is close, but Arenado is not a hall of famer. At least not yet. He still has a chance but it will take several years that are better than 2024.

BTW, Arenado has an OPS of 0.385 in the post-season. A post-season OBP of 0.143.

Rolen post-season OPS of 0.678 and post-season OBP of 0.294. Both numbers are almost double that of Arenado. In the 2006 WS, Rolen went 8 for 19 with an OPS of 1.213 and an OBP of 0.476. The 2006 WS put Rolen over the top.

Arenado (supposedly) has been working on his swing since the 24 season ended. He is working on getting his power stroke back.

Don’t be surprised if all that hard work he is doing really pays off in the upcoming season. If so, he will help any contending team. Just sayin.

Cardinal nation loves the guy. But his falloff has been very dramatic.

He came to win and we’re paying him to help us win with his glove AND to be a 4-hole hitter…and now we don’t have a 4-hole hitter…OR a 3-hole hitter now that Goldy also flamed out so quickly.

He didn’t sign up to be part of a rebuild, but here we are.

Cardinal fans have a right to be nervous.

@Ol His first 2 yrs with Cards were great. He was traded there as well, he did not go there as a free agent. And baseball is a team sport. While he’s fallen off in the last 2 years, at least some of it is likely due to attrition in the lineup around him. It has slowly given weaker limiting protection around him.

And you re not paying him, just to clear that bit up.

Arenado to Baltimore would be interesting. Power threat with elite defense at 3b. Kick Urias to UTL and have Westy full time at 2b. That’ll give more time for Holiday and Mayo at AAA. Neither of those two were ready for the show last season and they got exposed. Holidays leg kick still needs to be simplified and Mayo has the making of a good player but has to fix that hitch in his load. Way too many K’s between those 2. Firmly of the belief the pressure is on Mountcastle to bring it all together this season or the writing is on the wall.

Not sure you need 3 years of Arenado to cover for either player (and Jackson is a starter unless he bombs ST). Either way, Ramon is more than capable and won a GG for 3B too…Ramon is a wizard with the glove.

I don’t care one bit about the financial aspects of the deal, because it is not my money. But I honestly believe the Rockies didn’t really do THAT bad with the Arenado trade. Gomber is not a star, but he is a serviceable starter. Montero had a few moments and they didn’t get much else. But the Cardinals didn’t exactly get Nolan at his peak either. They got one really good year and three slightly above average years. I would still call the trade a win for St Louis, but not by nearly as much as I would have in 2021.

They are doing him a favor and will send him to LAD so he can win a WS. Still great defensively and will be a great piece for the Dodgers next run.

Here is what I think the Rockies did wrong with the Arenado deal. They did not stand tough.

They paid down Arenado’s salary by millions for Gomber and Montero.

They should have been willing to part with Arenado paying down none of his salary and getting literally nothing back. Then they could have used the money for other assets. If they could not deal Arenado under those terms, then they keep him. If Arenado holds out, he does not get paid, so they have the same terms. Just my take on it.

At the 2023 trade deadline, the Cards had a fair amount decent players, but no great ones. Both Goldie and Arenado could’ve been replaced by players already on the rosters.

There were no guarantees their replacements would be any better, but they’d have been saving $61M on two guys that were 36 and 33.

My point is that Arenado committed to the team by opting into his contract and passing up more money. At that time, it was widely viewed as a huge favor and commitment to the team.

He was given promises about continuing to do what it took to compete before he opted in. They owe him a trade now that they aren’t keeping those commitments.

As it turned out, those potential replacements *weren’t* better in 2024 (aside from Burleson, but moving him to 1B would’ve exposed the OF even further than it already was), as keeping even the diminished forms of those two veterans helped the Cardinals bounce back to a winning record last season where they stayed in contention until late August. Keeping them then was the right call

The Scherzer to St Louis homecoming ship sailed several years ago. They passed on Max to chase Stanton and Heyward, which luckily neither happened. Mo’s biggest fail to say no when Max offered to come if they came close to Washington’s offer. They declined having peak Scherzer as an ace for several years at a fair price. Cost the likely at least one WS championship maybe more with Max as their #1. Would have, could have, should have signed him.

If you recall, and apparently you do not, the team had the best rotation in baseball at the time Scherzer was a free agent. There was not a need for him at all at that time. Sure hindsight they should have signed him but thats complete hindsight.

He would sell some tickets. If he’s playing well at the deadline and the team isnt he can be traded.

It was only one year later that they offered David Price just shy of $200 million. When he didn’t sign, they signed Mike Leake for five years and 80 million, then traded him in a salary dump shortly after. Saying there was no need…is false.

They did not offer Lynn a contract for 2016 and Garcia was hardly reliable. It’s easy to see a scenario where you, knowing you will need additional pitching in 2016, sign Scherzer and trade Lynn during his last season of eligibility.

They simply didn’t do it, for whatever reason they had. Everything is evaluated in hindsight. They made a bad decision on this one, and spent most of the money on Mike Leake and Dexter Fowler a year later – also bad decisions. What could have been!

Signing Scherzer would defeat the purpose of trading Matz.

The idea is to get younger and cheaper in the back end of the rotation. They’ll still have Gray, Fedde, and Pallante, and then they have spots for probably McGreevey and one other guy (assuming they do the smart thing and don’t put Mikolas back in the rotation unless needed due to injuries).

I see Arenado being ok with Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Angels, in that order. I doubt the Dodgers or Yankees would be interested. Mets and Angels are long shots but believable. Seattle might be interested, but Cards are going to half to pay half the salary. Most likely, he is still with the Cardinals.

They’d be better off holding him and the prospect and the money and hoping on a bounce back or a team getting desperate and trading him later. They’re not trading him plus money and prospects for others junk.

If Dave Dombrowski starts feeling the heat from the Mets acquiring Soto and Adames going to the Giants, he may start making trades out of desperation. If the Phils go after Arenado, they should only do so if the closer Helsely is part of the trade and Bohm is not involved. Considering the Cards needs, the Phils should offer Schwarber and Walker for Arenado and Helsley. Then the Phils should plan to play Arenado at third base, move Bohm to first base and make Harper the DH. The Phils could alternate defensive positions of all three players as the season progresses, using combinations of Arenado at 3B, Bohm at 1B and Harper at DH: or Bohm at 3B, Harper at 1B and Arenado at DH: or Arenado at 3B, Harper at 1B and Bohm at DH.

blue, The Cards are the ones who have to bend with any proposed trade of Arenado who is making $35 million a year. Arenado and Helsley for Schwarber and Walker sort of works out numbers-wise. Walker’s problem with the Phils started in 2023 when he was not used at all during the playoffs. He hasn’t pitched well for the Phils since, but that doesn’t mean he’s lost the ability to pitch well. A change of scenery might do all these guys some good and might make both teams better.

There is no leverage. Arenado will only waive his no trade to go to the LAD his hometown and childhood dream. It will happen or he stays but he’s not going to NY Boston or any small market team.

I don’t think people realize how good Salas is. He is so good that every scout I have talked to at his games says that if it was just about what he does behind the plate he would be in the majors already. At 18 years old.

There is a solid shot that he is in a Padres uniform before the end of 2025. At age 19. The last 19 year old to start a game at catcher was in 1991.

Even if they hold him back to the start of 2026, no 20 year old catcher has started the season in MLB since 1991.

        That catcher was Pudge Rodriguez.

I do myself say this is an insane trade idea, but I think it’s fair to say I’m not under under valuing 2 big prospects for 9 figures worth of future salary relief.

It’s just a thought, I do personally want the padres to hold on to these studs under any typical trade scenarios.

Trading Salas or DeVries makes no sense. Here is a trade that might make sense for all 3 teams.

Padres – Biggest need SP and Catcher
OF Cody Bellinger and all of his salary
C Cal Raleigh (1st yr arb eligible $5.6mm)

          Why:
Bellinger’s contract is upside down. By a lot. Cubs are trying to dump him and will not get much back for him. Padres get a replacement for Profar in LF that can also play 1B or DH.

Raleigh is going to get VERY expensive over next 3 years. $20 million in arbitration by 2027 using the MLBTR algorithm from Matt Swartz. DiPoto trades that type of contract every time.

Mariners – Biggest need INF bats
          2B Cronenworth
          C Miguel Amaya
Moises Ballesteros (bat 1st catcher or 1B – top 100 prospect)
Cam Smith (3B prospect in AA – top 100 prospect)

Why: Cronenworth provides a 2B bat immediately. At 2B he has averaged 4.2 WAR per 162 games. As a team the Mariners have averaged 1.4 WAR at 2B the last 3 seasons and had a 1.4 WAR last season. .

          Amaya takes over at catcher.

Ballesteros is the big bat they have been needing at DH/1B/and catcher.

Smith is a 3B prospect who will go back to AA to start 2025, but could be in the majors by the beginning of 2026. He is blocked in the Cubs system by Isaac Paredes and their #1 prospect Matt Shaw.

          Cubs – Biggest need bullpen
          $32.5 million salary relief
          MR/SP Jhony Brito
          MR Sean Reynolds
Bradgley Rodriguez (triple digit FB in AA last season)
Brandon Valenzuela (defense 1st catcher in AAA)

Why: Brito had a 4.12 ERA in 26 appearances out of the Padres pen last year. He started 13 games for the Yankees in 2023 and was exclusively a starter in AAA in 2024 for the Padres.

Reynolds is a reliever that sits in the upper 90s and can touch triple digits. He had a 0.82 ERA after being called up by the Padres in mid-July last season.

Rodriguez is a reliever that regularly hit triple digits across 3 levels last season ending the season in AA. He is expected to see time in the majors this season.

Valenzuela is a defense 1st catcher with exceptional game calling skills and an above average arm. He is expected to start the year in AAA, but will get an invitation to big league camp again this season.

All players are MLB players unless otherwise noted.

Cubs fans have reacted negatively to including Smith in the trade even though he is blocked by their #1 prospect, Matt Shaw. They may be right, although the trade would require the Cubs giving up additional prospects that are close to MLB ready to make it work.

Some have said the Padres would have to include a different reliever off their MLB roster. If so the only ones that could not be included without unbalancing the trade would be Suarez, Adam, Morejon, and Estrada. Take your pick and say why that one. Maybe adding one instead of changing one would work. Cosgrove? Jacob?

It’s not really opening up a spot, because we don’t have an obvious 3B to replace him. Presumably Donovan would play there.

I mean, we could play Gorman there, but he’s not very good defensively. Saggesse maybe.

Gorman is fine defensively at 2B, so he should be even better at his natural position of 3B.

3B is also Walker’s natural position, and then there’s also Donovan and Saggese. Between the four of them, they should be able to piece together decent enough playing time between the two positions, albeit unlikely to be as good as keeping Arenado at 3B even with his bat in decline.

Do you have a source on that? It’s not unreasonable to move Walker back to his natural position at least part-time if it opens up after he’s had so much trouble learning to play RF. At least Gorman has done a decent job learning to play his alternative position.

Yes, that would open up a spot in the OF, but the Cardinals also have a number of internal OF options like Nootbaar, Siani, Scott, Donovan, and Burleson, as well as Walker still able to fill in sometimes.

While the rest of those guys are all left-handed, the Cardinals should pick up a right-handed OF bench bat in free agency either way.

Mikolas is the symbol of losing. We will never win again until that BP throwing sap is gone. He is so happy to be there but just keeps sucking more each year. He was gifted two unearned extensions by Mo. All for one flukish good season back in 2018. Then the league figured him out.

Who cares about eating innings when they’re such low quality innings? One of the Cardinals prospects could probably match Mikolas’s numbers, even if we assume McGreevey is already ahead of him on the depth chart.

Assuming he can’t be traded, Mikolas will probably get one last shot in Spring Training, and even in the best case scenario he’s probably a long man in the bullpen and extra depth in case of rotation injuries. If he can’t turn things around, he’s probably looking at a DFA early in the season.

Proposal #1. Arenado plus $10 mil. next 2 years & $6 mil. the third year for Taylor, Nick Frasso (P), & Samuel Sanchez (P).
Proposal #2. Arenado with the same monetary figures as in first proposal plus, Helsley for Frasso, (P), Michael Grove (P), Ben Casparius (P),
    and Chris Taylor.
Proposal #3. 3 team trade; Dodgers get Arenado & Helsley plus same monetary compensation as mentioned above from the Cardinals.

Cardinals get Logan Gilbert, Tai Peete (ss) from the Mariners & C. Taylor & Samuel Sanchez (P) from the Dodgers.

Mariners get Nick Frasso (P) & Justin Wrobleski (P) from the Dodgers and Nolan Gorman or Alec Burleson from the Cardinals.

No chance this happens, but how’s about Nolan Arenado and lotsa pizza dough (as in $) to Detroit for 2-4 guys they will lose in the next couple of Rule 5 Drafts. There is some gold to mine there.

Putting him at 3rd might finally get the image of Nick Maton out of Tiger fans’ heads. Matt Vierling couldn’t do it, Jace Jung isn’t close to ready, and Zach McKinstry isn’t close to good.

Arenado is almost as cooked as a crispy breadstick, but seeing a still-decent defender at Comerica’s hot corner would be nice for a change.

Hard pass on Arenado. 34 year olds rarely get better after two consecutive seasons where they showed obvious decline. 35 and 36 year olds decline even more. It’s a very distinct possibility he doesn’t even offer league average production anymore.
