Yankees, Giants Showing Interest In Willy Adames

By Anthony Franco | December 4, 2024 at 10:27pm CDT

The Yankees and Giants are among the teams that have shown interest in Willy Adames, writes Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The market’s top shortstop has also been tied to the Astros, Phillies, Blue Jays, Braves and Red Sox throughout the offseason.

New York’s top priority is re-signing Juan Soto. They could know within the next few days whether Soto will stay in the Bronx or accept a $600MM+ offer elsewhere. If Soto walks, there’d be a lot of pressure on both owner Hal Steinbrenner and GM Brian Cashman to land one or more players from the next tiers of free agency.

Adames and Alex Bregman are probably the next-best position players. Neither is going to come close to Soto’s contract, of course, but they could each land a deal in the $150-200MM range. While Bregman would be a more straightforward positional fit, it’s possible the organization could still have animosity over the third baseman’s role in the 2017 sign-stealing operation. Adames carries no such baggage.

The Yankees don’t need a shortstop. Anthony Volpe is one of the game’s top defensive infielders. Bryan Hoch of MLB.com wrote recently that the Yanks were unwilling to move Volpe off the position. Adames is reportedly willing to consider a position change, though it’s possible he’d sign with a team that’ll keep him at shortstop if he’s weighing multiple offers in the same price range.

Shortstop is the only infield position that is settled in the Bronx. Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be in the mix at either second or third base. If Chisholm replaces Gleyber Torres at the keystone, the top internal third base possibilities are DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera and prospect Caleb Durbin. That’s not sufficient for a team trying to get back to the World Series. The Yankees could also upgrade at first base, where Ben Rice is the best in-house option.

Adames hasn’t played third base in the majors. He has 10 career games outside of shortstop, all of which came at second base during his 2018 rookie season. Shortstops usually move to other infield positions without issue. Adames has plus arm strength and athleticism. His typically strong defensive grades dipped this year because of a spike in errors, but there’s not much reason to believe he wouldn’t be an effective third baseman.

There’d be no need for a position change in San Francisco. President of baseball operations Buster Posey said at the start of the offseason that the Giants wanted to add a shortstop. That’d allow them to move Tyler Fitzgerald to second base, where he’s a better fit. San Francisco was linked to Ha-Seong Kim, the market’s #2 shortstop, a few weeks ago.

Kim is coming back from labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder. That makes him riskier than Adames but should dramatically reduce the price. While Adames is likely to sign for six or seven years, Kim could settle for a two-year deal that allows him to opt out after next season. The former Padres infielder also has an obvious connection to San Francisco skipper Bob Melvin.

Adames rejected a qualifying offer from the Brewers. The Yankees and Giants each exceeded the luxury tax threshold this year, so they’d pay the highest penalties to sign a qualified free agent. Either team would lose their second- and fifth-highest pick in next summer’s draft and $1MM from their 2026 international signing bonus pool.

Why both? Fitz at 2B, Adames or HSK at short, Chap at 3B. Would be fun if they signed BOTH HSKs. Not fun like win the division fun, but still fun.

Here’s a crazy idea, Giants offer Doval to Phillies for Bohm. I think it would get shot down in ten seconds by DD, but Giants could shoot their shot. Bohm would be a one or two year stopgap first baseman until Bryce Eldridge is ready.

Not so crazy. You would need to add a top 15 prospect though. Bohm is what Buster is looking for, someone who is a doubles hitter. He made that clear during his announcement interview. Giants don’t want a one dimensional hitter because of how Oracle plays. Adames, Bohm, and Burnes would make the Giants way more competitive.

@5TUNT1N a study was done in 2022 based on the 1st round picks of all teams between 2005-2015. The average career WAR was less than 4. The Giants did better than most, 7.63 I think, but Adames would more than likely deliver much greater WAR over the length of a contract with the Giants than an average 1st round draft pick would. Statistically speaking, it would seem a poor decision for Buster not to try and sign Adames just because of draft pick compensation.

Out of any fa players available, adames is the one they should be willing to give up a pick for. Or maybe one of the high end starters. The giants don’t have the farm to step forward without significant external additions this offseason.

Why wouldn’t he? Let’s say Buster makes the trade and yet the team can’t beat out San Diego still for second and is 7 games back of the Padres at the deadline. You don’t think Buster could flip Adames for mid to low level prospects as if he never lost those picks to begin with?

How so? FZ already left the door open for Luciano to take the SS job during ST last year but then signed Ahmed instead..when Luciano got called up last season, dude barely started..whether it’d be DH when Soler left or 2B when Thairo got dropped, FZ didn’t allow Luciano to straight up take those jobs..of course, Luciano didn’t give them any reason to start him..but to claim that starting Luciano is a Farhan move is premature and shallow thinking..

Volpe is 23 years old and already has a fantastic glove. If he takes a tick up offensively then you’re looking at a toss up.

Would be very Yankee-esque to sign a name and pay market value after a career year though. They’ll have another Stanton/Lemahieu/Rizzo contract before long there!

That wasn’t even close to a career year for Adames. He was better in 2020, 2021, and 2022 than this season.

I just don’t see Adames to Yankees. If Yankees get Soto, there won’t be money for Adames. Even if Soto goes to Mets, I see the Yankees in on Corbin Burnes and Christian Walker (or Pete Alonso). Volpe is overrated, more solid than star, but he is young and cheap, and I think they’ll keep him where he is for several more years.

Could make the argument with the Yankees current holes that they’d be better off with the latter.

I’d like to see Yankees sign Christian Walker for 1B, move Chisholm to 2B, trade for Nolan Arenado for 3B, trade for Cody Bellinger for CF, as Judge moves to RF, and start Dominguez in LF.

He actually had an above league average batting average (.251 vs. .243), well above league average OBP (.331 vs. .312), and very well above league average slugging (.462 vs. .399). Keep in mind that offense looks a lot different in 2024 than it did in 1994.

“Yes, but the previous 2 seasons, he was not very good”

He was better in 2021 and 2022. His offense was still above average and defense matters. He slumped in 2023 but still put up over 3 WAR.

In my opinion Adames will be way too over priced.

He batted .238 with a .298 OBP in 2022, then batted .217 with a .305 OBP in 2023. While his offense improved in 2024 his defense declined.

He’s basically asking for superstar money. I’d rather sign Ha-Seong Kim or give Schmitt a shot.

I’d welcome adames in pinstripes! I’m hoping Soto is not back just because there are to many holes to fill. To see rice, during and djl all in the infield is a bit much plus your going to need pitching… go get adames, burnes, santander, tanner scott, trade for bellinger and sign a few middle relievers for 600 mill

Rumors always say Yankees meet with this or that player. I never know if it’s true or not. The Yankees, for whatever reason, can’t multitask and sign a player before a Soto is done. I’m also under the belief that if Yankees sign Soto, they are getting no one else. If that’s the case good bye Soto the Yankees need much more. Yes they made the World Series but they lost. The Yankees have several issues. I honestly don’t know if Cashman knows how to build a team without spending money and they obviously have restrictions and don’t want to go above and beyond. The Yankees won in 2009 because the Yankees spent HUGE on CC, AJ and Tex. I don’t see the Yankees signing 3 top free agents anymore in one off-season.

I’d say no to Adames. If we’re spending at that level just go get Bregman and Bellinger. But I’d only see it as a possible plan B to Soto, not in addition to Soto. Probably plan D in my book.

Hal has no reason not to be all in on Soto. These other ideas to give 5 and 6 year deals to 2 or 3 above average players around age 30 looks foolish when you can get an MVP that’s already succeeded in NY.

If hal gets outbid he should sell the team to someone who has the money to run the team the way the Yankees need to be run, because the Yankees as a team and as a brand don’t let our guys go to get poached by the Mets or the RSox over money when we need them and we need Soto.

I agree that Soto is a great hitter but his defense is only average. For 40 plus million why not santander, and bellinger or combination of 2 of 3 possibly 3 of 4
Santander, adames, pregnant bellinger and then add as well to your pitching With tanner scott, burnes or fried and more. To simply rely on weaver as closer and roll it back with the same crew minus a few is not going to push you over the top the dodgers already got better with snell. Yankees need to add not just retain soto

You could have Soto and still get valuable players to play those positions. Soto is a game breaker, an mvp level talent. That money isn’t going to go as far as you imagine. 30 for Santander and 25 for Bellinger is already more than Soto costs.

The Yankees have the revenue to add whoever they want I don’t understand why people aren’t helping to hold Hal’s feet to the fire to get it done. They can still add significant players it just might not be the very top of the market.

I agree with you on salary saying 50 million a year for Soto but if you can get chicago to pay some of bellinger and if you can get Santander for 20ish you probably have 4-6 mill left to hit 50 mill potentially a middle reliever or depth outfielder option. But you also with bellinger and Santander up about 10-15 hr and 50 plus rbi over soto
