Cubs, Astros Have Discussed Ryan Pressly; Pitcher Has Not Waived No-Trade Clause

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | January 23, 2025 at 4:46pm CDT

4:46pm: Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that Pressly has not agreed to waive his no-trade clause to this point. According to Rome, while the Astros are shopping Pressly, a deal is not considered imminent. The veteran righty would obviously need to approve a trade for anything to get across the finish line.

4:36pm: The Cubs are “on the verge” of acquiring right-hander Ryan Pressly from the Astros, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Pressly has a full no-trade clause and will have to waive it for a deal to be finalized.

Chicago has been looking for another back-end reliever. Pressly has plenty of experience in the late innings. He worked as Houston’s closer between 2020-23. Pressly saved 12 games in the shortened season and recorded between 26 and 33 saves over the next three years. He didn’t allow an earned run average north of 3.58 in any of those seasons.

Houston displaced Pressly in the ninth inning when they signed Josh Hader. Pressly pitched well in a setup capacity this year, posting a 3.49 ERA through 56 2/3 innings. He triggered a $14MM vesting option for the 2025 season. That’s probably close to market value for one year of his services. It’s $4MM above what Andrew Kittredge and José Leclerc received as free agents, for instance. The Astros are narrowly above the luxury tax threshold, though, so they could look to offload payroll to duck below the tax line. Pressly would be their most obvious trade candidate if he were open to moving. He’s a Texas native who has spent nearly seven years with the Astros, however, so it’d be understandable if he’s reluctant to move.

Tell them to send Cam Smith back and we’ll give Pressly another year. Call it quits.

Yep! I’m far from a baseball talent evaluator. But I have a strong feeling that Cam Smith is going to be a professional hitter and just an overall good player. Sucks even more that Tucker is a one year and done rental for the Cubs. Not to be redundant but no way the Cubs meet his salary demands. Last number I heard for Tucker is 8 years/360,000,000.

Pressly is a good pitcher. Not as good as Scott or Hoffman but certainly less risky with just a 1 year commitment.

The only way to get somebody to waive a NTC is to give them more money. You people are delusional if you think otherwise.

Aloha Uncle, after all the capital traded away for a rental in Tucker, I’m afraid that Jed will give Houston Caissie and Ballesteros for Pressly. I just don’t trust Jed anymore, especially since he’s in his walk-off year. I hope for the best. Mahalo

Daniel Palencia and Canario. Bot have potential but will not impact the Cubs.

          Houston gives them a opertunity.

I would not off load a blue chip unless we are talking a all star quality starting pitcher like Cease

Aloha MLB, I was being sarcastic in regard to Caissie and Ballesteros but with Jed in his last year, who knows what he might do. I just hope he uses the saved $$$ from trading Cody on a BP arm like Jansen. It’s only money and not young talent. Take care now. Mahalo!

Agree. I like acquiring Pressly if Cubs are just taking on salary. I would prefer Estevez or Jansen rather than trading any of the team top prospects.

A 3.49 ERA for a late inning pitcher isn’t really all that great. That’s actually mediocre. The only thing appealing about him is that he has an expiring contract. But Jed will fix that by extending him and probably giving up a good prospect for a guy who should demand an A ball prospect at best and 1 year and send him off with Kyle Tucker after 2025. Hopefully let the new POBO take the Cubs farther next year. Cubs would be doing the Astros a favor by taking him at all. They should be sending the Cubs a prospect.

I’m guessing that is the hold up. Pressly wants more money in order to waive his NTC
As a Cubs fan, I’m not so sure I want to give up another year and more money on a 36 year old pitcher who performance digressed last season. Hoping this is a salary dump by Houston and the Cubs aren’t giving any real prospects.

I can’t imagine that money is the issue. Im really afraid that the Astros really believe they can get an absurdly high return from Hawkins/Hoyer. They don’t seem to know how to say no.

Much better than Seward. Less risky than Robertson. Probably cheaper than Estevez. I would prefer Robert Suarez but Pressly will require far less in return.

The Dodgers’ front office would ask if Estevez gives a better chance to win.

The Cubs FO asks if Pressley is cheaper than Estevez.

Guess which way wins more games…

I don’t disagree that the Cubs owner/FO is playing to try to win the division and hope for some luck in the post-season, rather than playing to crush all opposition both in the regular season and in the post-season.

In this case, I think Pressly is cheaper because he is an existing contract rather than a free agent, not because Estevez is better than Pressly. I doubt Pressly will leverage his situation into getting a second year as a player option.

Pressly has been a great reliever, but if the Astros get money or prospects in return this is a huge win. Good luck Cubs fans when he comes in, he only throws offspeed and if the umpire doesn’t give him the corners he gets absolutely blasted once he has to float it over the plate. Not sure why he stopped throwing a fastball, but he gets absolutely smoked these days. Stanek and Pressly are 2 relievers Houston fans are glad to never see again.

figured Cubs should have pushed to include him in Tucker trade in order to try to lessen the prospect blow that went back to Houston. Houston wants that money eaten first and foremost.

Basically Houston benefits from having these as 2 separate deals. Well played to Dana Brown.

Are you seriously thinking the Cubs would give up PCA or Happ for pressley? That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard, especially for PCA. First off, the stros trading pressley will be identical to the Cubs trading bellinger, it’ll be a straight salary dump with a player of minimal importance headed the other direction. Also Happ has a full no trade clause too.
