Latest On Blue Jays, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

By Anthony Franco | January 16, 2025 at 11:06pm CDT

After agreeing to a $28.5MM salary to avoid arbitration last week, the Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. can turn their focus to a long-term deal. The four-time All-Star said last month that the Jays had offered him around $340MM, which he said was well below his asking price. That offer reportedly predated Juan Soto’s $765MM agreement with the Mets that shattered prior contractual precedents.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report that the Jays have not had any extension talks with Guerrero’s camp since before Christmas. That indicates there was little to no discussion about a long-term deal in the talks to avoid exchanging arbitration filing figures. However, Rosenthal and Sammon write that extension talks are expected to pick back up before the beginning of Spring Training.

Guerrero said last month that he would cut off negotiations as soon as Spring Training begins. It’s common for players to publicly impose deadlines — many prefer not to discuss contracts once the regular season gets underway — but some players will ultimately continue talks beyond those “cutoffs” if they feel negotiations are making progress. If both team and player are amenable, extension discussions can take place at any point.

While Guerrero isn’t going to get Soto money, he’s clearly looking well beyond the $313.5MM extension that Rafael Devers received from the Red Sox over the 2022-23 offseason. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote last week that Guerrero’s asking price was believed to be at or above $450MM. Jon Heyman of The New York Post suggests similarly, reporting that the former MVP runner-up is looking to top $400MM and could aim for a deal closer to the half-billion dollar mark.

It remains to be seen whether the Jays have the appetite for that kind of investment. They made bigger offers to Shohei Ohtani and Soto, suggesting they’re amenable to a huge expenditure for certain players. Ohtani and Soto presented opportunities to add superstars from outside the organization. Extending Guerrero would be a major boost to a fanbase frustrated by a series of near-misses in free agency over the last two winters. It could also be necessary to keep the team from going into a rebuild after next season. Toronto already faces an uphill path to contention in the AL East. Competing in 2026 if Guerrero and Bo Bichette walk may not be feasible.

In any case, the focus seems squarely on an extension. Rosenthal and Sammon write that the team much prefers to keep Guerrero rather than trade him. They suggest that, in order to even consider a trade, the Jays would need to receive a haul that tops what the Yankees sent to the Padres for one year of Soto’s services last winter.

New York sent two seasons of Michael King — who had proven himself as a multi-inning relief weapon and flashed significant upside in a limited look as a starter — as the headliner. The Yankees included highly-regarded pitching prospect Drew Thorpe (whom San Diego flipped as the centerpiece of the Dylan Cease deal), controllable depth starters Jhony Brito and Randy Vásquez, and backup catcher Kyle Higashioka to the Padres. The Yanks also got Trent Grisham in the deal.

That’s a massive haul for one year of any player, which reflects the Jays’ preference for holding onto Guerrero. Perhaps that’d change if extension talks don’t progress, though it’d be a major surprise if they dealt him before Opening Day. Toronto hopes to compete for a playoff spot this season. They could still add one of the top unsigned hitters (e.g. Anthony Santander, Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso). Even if the Jays don’t succeed in extending Guerrero, they’d presumably prefer to see how things play out in the season’s first half before deciding whether to make him available.

A big first baseman with worse defense and less power. That’s not exactly a great profile for a long term investment.

I’m obese. Vlad is just big boned. I implore you to Google “Vlad Guerrero workout routine”. He is not fat. I don’t know why ppl say that. And as long as he continues to work out he should be able to agree gracefully the same way David Ortiz did. He not going to steal bases or go from 1st to home on a double but he should be in good enough condition to leg out a double and to job setting the bases after a homer. I don’t know his work effort but if he puts in the work then I would be comfortable giving him a 10 year deal.

There’s no comp between Vlad and Alonso. Vlad will remain a valuable 1B/DH into the future. Alonso at this moment faces a kind of telling 2025. He’s very very close to the aging slugger obp cliff. Alonso is very very overrated.

Pete Alonso turned down 158 million by the way. Now he can’t get a team to sign him for 3 years. Is vladdy younger and a better hitter than Pete yes. But vlad is Pete in 3 years. If Alonso isn’t worth 90 million to anyone vlad isn’t worth 400 million.

Yet all these Mets fans excluding me want Vlad. He has not been the most consistent player and he isn’t even in the top 10 of all MLB players. Probably not in the top 20 if you include pitchers. Mets should have met Pete halfway and offered him 3 years at 75 million with a possible 10 million of incentives.

If Alonzo turned down a 3 year deal then I would assume he probably has a better offer on the table. It’s one thing to turn down what is the best offer in November vs mid- January. Also, your comparison isn’t very good. Pete, at any age, was never as complete of a bitter as Vlad was/is. There’s no rain to think that Vlad won’t be an above average until at least 33.

They think because the Mets insanely gave Soto 765 million that they can break the bank too. There are only a few teams in MLB that can lay out that kind of cash and they have to want you.

I disagree due to the underlying assets. Vlads weight bothered people when he was taking BP on YouTube when he was 16. But he’s going to still get on base probably. He might be more of a classic 1B/DH. But there might be a 50 point or more spread in Alonso and Vlads OBP at the same ages.

Alonso could also resurge this season. The past couple have some troubling underlying stats.

As a Jays fan, I am torn. Vladdy is a wonderful human being and a lot of fun to watch play. He is also capable of monster seasons.

On the other hand, they dont have anyone to play with him over the next 15 seasons, he can have some Meh seasons, and is likely to have conditioning issues.

A massive contract isn’t likely to age well. Although there has been a lot of wage inflation in baseball, so who knows.

When is it enough money for the owner of the team? That’s ultimately what you’re arguing for. Take less money so the rich owner can have more. And for some reason, your thought process stops at the guy working for a living. Crazy.

Teachers aren’t the best comp for this attempted dialogue specifically bc it’s such a low talent level job that just about anyone with an education can do. Doctors, scientists, lawyers…those are better comps if you’re trying to illustrate the insanity of sports contracts. Still, there’s no real point in the dialogue bc there are more people qualified to be CEOs than mlb bench players, much less stars.

Juan Soto got 765 million and is one of the worst defenders in the game. It was a joke that he got nominated for gold gloves in 22 and 24 when his metrics were ranked near the bottom.
I’m not saying Vladdy is Juan at all but Juan is just a big example of mega contracts being handed out with glaring shortcomings in their game. Another example would be the 300 million dollars the Phillies gave Trea Turner. Solid at the plate, terrible in the field.

Ever since Jeter won the gold glove the year he graded out as the worst shortstop in baseball I haven’t been able to gaf about gold gloves. They’re nonsense awards where, usually, your bat has to play for you to get attention. Sometimes you’ll have defensive wizards win on those merits but that’s the exception whereas it should be the rule.

The Jays Baseball FO and organization is so poor that I find it hard to believe Mr. Guerrero Jr. will sign with them without testing free agency.

He’ll use the Jays like other FA’s do that talk with them….to run the price of their subsequent contract up.
    –
The Jays are exactly like the Cardinals. They threw money at sexy FA’s and trade candidates from teams dumping their contracts. Now they’re stuck with over-the-hill players whose skills are eroding while their salaries are climbing. If either one of those teams could actually develop young players and make young veteran players better – as winning organizations do – they wouldn’t be in the situations they’re in.

Obviously teams will be lining up to sign Valddy after the 2025 season.

Jays spend a lot on the payroll and are definitely not cheap or poor.

Also, there’s always the possibility that no matter what the Jays offer he’s going to hit free agency to try to maximize his value. Nothing wrong with that either but it’s easy to blame the team “for letting him walk” without factoring the player’s intentions.

I think I speak for a lot of Jays fans when I say I have very mixed feelings about a lucrative long-term extension for Vladdy.

He has had two elite seasons that have sandwiched two pretty average seasons for a first baseman. He’s not great defensively and makes a lot of base running mistakes. While good last season, his conditioning has been poor in previous years. For these reasons, it’s a huge gamble to sign him for 10+ years.

On the other hand, he’s a homegrown fan favourite and basically the only good offensive player on the Jays – he was essentially the only reason to watch games last season. Given the Jays highly publicized inability to sign high-profile free agents the last few offseasons, letting him walk would be a PR disaster.

Agree with you, C. Second-half Vladdy in 2024 was must-watch TV. They really need to sign him or the fan base will fall off even more. He could be using the Jays for leverage, too, though, for when/if he hits FA. We’ll probably never know. But if he has a down year his walk year (if not extended), I doubt he gets that $340mm. They almost NEED to extend him, though, to attract other FAs not just this year but for years to come. Show other players they are actually serious.

If Vladdy’s comp is Prince Fielder (who was solid in one and excellent in his other eight full-time seasons), he should have 5 years left at the top, if he stays as healthy as he has. As of now, he has proven his floor is an above-average bat. That is actually pretty rare, in spite of any other real, or perceived, flaws.
Offer him 250 for that five and add several vesting options/opt-out opportunities after that. See what he says ….

While I think the jays should do a short term rebuild this offseason they aren’t going to.

They are at the end of this cores run. They made the playoffs a number of times but that ended last year. Also weren’t able to get over the top any of those years.

Toronto has plenty of money and plenty of good players which could be traded to reset the team.

If they don’t do it now (which they won’t) then they will have another chance at the deadline. This feels like a front office that’s on the ropes so they can’t reset. So they have to find a way to win this year or they very well maybe gone.

    Jays offseason plan should be
    1. sign Alonso to a 3 year $65m contract with an opt out after year one
    2. try and extend Guerrero. if he does not, move him. you will at least have Alonso for 1b.
    3. sign Santander to 3 year deal with opt out after year one and 2.

this accomplishes putting a team together with power (which they need) but gives players flexibility to opt out if team decides to rebuild.

the dollars may be higher, but it doesn’t sound like the mets may be an option. but devil’s advocate, 3 yrs $72

the concept is more the Jays could load up for what may essentially be their last run but offer some term options to guys who probably expected more $ and term.

for a team that was willing to go in on many FA, they haven’t added much so there is some money in the bank

The Jays are owned by Rogers Communications. Rogers needs to realize that Toronto is NOT a large market like LA, or New York or even Boston. They are a public company and as a shareholder I want them to start spending like the Orioles for example. Without a meaningful salary cap a sport is broken which baseball is. Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and a few other teams are wrecking the competitive balance. The Dodgers look like an all star team

Sorry to disappoint you but Toronto is the 4th largest market in North America. Since Rogers is the broadcasting company they only claim $40 million for the broadcasting contract and then collect the TV rights sharing from rest of the league. They can afford to be a little crazy. This doesn’t even include the revenue that the Blue Jays themselves generate which I believe was $300M+.

Toronto is NOT a large market? lol well anything after that isnt Worth Reading.

also, yes the dodgers and yanks and Mets spent money. but the Jays have to spend because getting FAs to come at discounts ain’t happening

If Vlad is looking for $450 mil or more than the Mets should stay , he’ll turn out to be another Mo Vaughn for us. I would like to see what Mauricio (3b) and Acuna (2b) can do for us. Sign Santander as the other BIG bat for us . Sign Tanner Scott and Trevor Bauer.

No one is signing Bauer unless it is Jack for another comeback to TV.

If Alonso is going to struggle to break $100mm I think Vlad should take >$300mm and be thankful. I doubt he’ll beat that in the open market.

VGJ is not the spriest of ball players, but saying his comp is Fielder is only accurate in the sense that their body types don’t fit the traditional mould for hitters.

Fielder was 5’11 with a playing weight of 275lbs. VGJ is 6’2 and 245lbs.

Guess who is 6’0 and 235lbs…Rafael Devers! Why isn’t he a comp?

Age and fitness effects us all differently, which is why I have my own concerns about VGJ, but this narrative that he’s a fat, obese lump is just wrong.

Not to mention there are lots of guys in other sports (namely football) that are that tall and weigh similarly and are still very athletic.

Look at the stats Juan Soto put up before his 24 season look t the age difference and where he went hitting ahead of Aaron judge. Compare that to Vladimir’s jr stats the r very close and Vj didn’t have anybody behind him that could hit. He is going in the best yers of his life probably of course he is going to get paid.

The Yankees overpaid for Sosa but mostly got what they wanted from him–a trip to the World Series. It may be that Toronto thinks that they can top that return…but they’d be better off not looking for the “last dollar” because Vlad is not as good as Sosa and will likely age worse. If his ask is anywhere near $500M it’s inconceivable that anyone would pay it–he’s not worth it. The goals some of these players set are not realistic. Top talent will continue to see mega-contracts, and they should, because top talent brings interest and team accomplishments. But flawed players, or one-dimensional players, are going to need to get lucky in their negotiations. They will still get unimaginable amounts of money….but

Ffs, trade him now. Hard to see Toronto contending this year with or without him and Steve Cohen is going to outbid everyone for him next offseason. Unload him now while he still has a season’s worth of value rather than get pennies on the dollar in August.

Two elite years, four good ones. Too high a variance for the dollars he’s seeking. The Soto overpay is going to create expectations for future free agents that won’t be met.

Vlad is a great hitter but he’s not an elite 140-160 OPS+ guy. He’s a one way masher who wants to get paid like a top perennial 8 war player. Typical greed of this younger generation. They think they are worth way more than that really are. I don’t mean to sound down on him. I like him. I just don’t see a $500M player. No way. Furthermore, his body type isn’t the type to age well.

Vlad is not Soto so they won’t get back that sort of haul. Also, it’s debatable if he should get more than Judge overall, but I think that worth is different to different teams. To Toronto it’d be in their best interest to do so. They had Soto money? Ohtani? Then yes, give a huge chunk to Vlad and go spend on Bregman and heck even Alonso for DH. I’D SOOO LOL if they did all that in a few swoops.

The failure here is Ross Atkins only offering Vlad $150mill after the 2021 season. Should have gave him 300mill + then. Now hes far too expensive to resign, no choice but to let him walk now. This is all on Bluejays management.

Ben Nicholson-Smith has reported yesterday that the Jays are in active negotiations wih Guerrero Jr. He is far more in the know ehen it comes to the Blue Jays than Ken Rosenthal is. Discussions are happening. Nothing may come out of it, but the Athletic report that there are no talks is simply not correct.
