Padres To Sign Top International Prospects Jhoan De La Cruz, Carlos Alvarez

By Steve Adams | January 17, 2025 at 8:39am CDT

The Padres are in the process of finalizing signings of two top international prospects out of the Dominican Republic, lefty Carlos Alvarez and shortstop Jhoan De La Cruz, per reports from Will Sammon of The Athletic and Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com. Alvarez will receive a signing bonus worth around $1MM, per Romero. De La Cruz’s bonus isn’t yet known, but Romero previously suggested he and the Padres had an agreement in the $2MM range. Baseball America’s Ben Badler had previously pegged De La Cruz between $1MM and $1.5MM. The broader takeaway here, however, is Romero tweeting that multiple sources have indicated the Padres believe they’re now out of the running for star Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki.

Sammon adds that the Alvarez had been originally committed to the Padres but has since been exploring other opportunities in the wake of their emergence as a Sasaki finalist. He’ll now indeed sign in San Diego, which supports the notion that a signing of Sasaki is no longer in the cards for the Padres.

San Diego was one of three finalists for Sasaki, alongside the Dodgers and Blue Jays. There’s no indication that Sasaki has made a final decision yet. The Dodgers were said to be exploring trades to add extra space to their MLB-low $5.146MM international bonus pool. The Jays and Padres have a slightly larger pool, both landing at $6.262MM, though San Diego was also reportedly looking into trades to bolster their maximum potential bonus.

Agent Joel Wolfe has previously suggested, however, that Sasaki’s decision won’t simply come down to who offers the largest bonus. After all, if maxing out his earnings were Sasaki’s top priority, he could’ve waited two more years until he was 25 and thus a “professional” rather than an “amateur” under MLB’s international free agent structure. That’s the route Yoshinobu Yamamoto chose, and it resulted in a record $325MM contract with the Dodgers for the 25-year-old hurler.

Until Sasaki formally puts pen to paper with another team, a sliver of hope for Friars fans remains, but this morning’s reports are bleak with regard to their chances on Sasaki. De La Cruz and Alvarez, however, will still be additions of note to the lower levels of San Diego’s system. MLB.com ranks them as the No. 21 and No. 39 prospects in this year’s class. Badler writes that De La Cruz doesn’t have one standout tool but has average or better tools across the board, with present gap power and the physical frame (5’11”, 170 pounds) and defensive tools necessary to stick at shortstop long-term.

Alvarez turned 17 in November but is already 6’5″ tall and already hitting 93 mph with his heater, per Badler. MLB.com’s report on him notes that he’s a former outfielder, meaning his arm is fresher than many teenaged pitching prospects. That he’s already flashing better-than-average command and secondary pitches despite being relatively new to the mound is an encouraging sign as well.

      Well can’t blame the kid.

Some people like the spot light some people like being the third or fourth wheel.

If Sasaki signs with the Dodgers he’s obviously comfortable being third fiddle behind Ohtani and Yamamoto.

Might as well call Sasaki Chris Bosh

This isn’t basketball where 3rd fiddle means less ball time. What exactly is 3rd fiddle in baseball? The Dodgers have been division champs every year except for maybe 2 in the past 13 years. Won 2 WS, maybe 3 if it weren’t for Astrol scandal, and have great leaders with Freeman/Betts/Ohtani.

Bosh didn’t receive less ball time he was a starter alongside D Wade and LeBron. Posted similar stats to his days in Toronto when healthy.

3rd fiddle means 3rd fiddle. He’s gonna garner less attention than Ohtani and Yamamoto from media and fans.

Some prefer the less press or Internet attention. My gripe is the system needs to change with foreign professionals. All teams deserve the same opportunity to sign the players. As I posted in other articles, I believe other leagues cap the number of foreign players allowed on each team. MLB should do the same.

You didn’t think this through did you? You realize the mlb is made up 30% of foreign players right? If you cap the number, you will end up kicking out A bunch of players. Unless you want to just cap the number of Japanese players. Those other leagues that cap foreign players are 90% American, such as the MLS. Caping foreign players would quite literally destroy the MLB

Everybody wants to win. It’s human nature. The thrill to succeed. Who’s to say Roki, w/all his God given talent, won’t be #1 player on Dodgers once he has opportunity to establish himself. If this kid comes out dealing like he did as rookie in Japan, dialing up zeros he could quickly become superstar in his own right on the world stage. Sure, Ohtani is presently baseball God n deserves highest mantle but he did just hurt himself so bad he needed surgery, is over 30 yrs ol, n God forbide he has anymore set-backs in his comeback from surgery on pitching elbow. Already had major TJ n brace surgeries on it. I’m not that sure that Roki cares where he fits in the mind of others n believe he will be great teammate n find his place in mlb. Ppl like what they like, ppl want what they want, n if that’s playing for LA Dodgers than that’s his dream. Just let the kid play n all that other stuff will workout. Not even sure he is Dodger yet.

To *me* there *is* no ‘good’ part to the city.

But let’s be honest – these guys spend half the season on the road or traveling. Then the offseason wherever they want, with a couple of months each winter in the desert or Florida.

Shark – For me, just as bad.

I’ve been to Beverly hills, Malibu, the palisades, all over actually.

I’ve visited l.a. Plenty through the years, and, hated it. I have a brother in law who is an astrophysicist and these days a professor out there. I visit for love of my nephews.

He’s thinking of leaving academia as he’s nearing his 60s and has been establishing a company doing… let’s be honest, no idea. Some scientific modeling and environmental impact stuff. Interesting guy. Was there in Antarctica when they were building a research station amd did stuff for a while living there.

Anyways, he wants out of L.A. too these days, thus the business and leaving behind university life.

But for me, no, id hate living in beverly hills. Now, give me a nice 10,000 or 20,000 acres ranch? Thats money well spent on a frivolous uberexpensive property.

But I’m content enough with a couple hundred acres of privacy, clean air, clean plentiful water, and a range of seasons to enjoy, with nobody trying to tell me what I can and can’t do on or to my property that I reasonably want to.

Bad fan look to be a sore loser. Better to spin it that Padres went head to head with Dodgers and just missed out to a dynasty-legacy in the making. Most fans will enjoy hating the Dodgers as the favored team, yet the Dodgers are spending roughly the same as the Mets, Yankees and Phillies. Time for other owners to step up to the plate and join them.

Money cant fix the issue, actually the fact the Dodgers spend the same is part of the issue. Players have taken significant discounts and deferrals to go to the Dodgers the past few years, they would not have done the same for the other 29 teams. Other teams owners cant step up to the plate and get Roki or Ohtani or Yamamoto to sign there.

Not all known. Tons of comments of fans thinking their team was getting him. Dodgers just told all their other signings to sign elsewhere. That doesn’t mean they are getting Roki! It’s just the Dodgers are dumb! SD has a Japanese legend! So what if LA has 2! He wants Yu! Toronto is a international city! So what if LA is a much easier flight to Japan and has awesome weather! He’s the first Japanese player to prefer the east coast over west coast!

What competitive balance? Fans are going to start abandoning baseball when you cant compete with a dodgers super team.
If the dodgers land Sasaki lets abdolutely flood the commissioners office with letters of protest.

Like they abandoned the MLB when the Yankees were winning every year? That sure didn’t happen. Don’t be mad because the dodgers built an organization that players want to play for while
The Padres have their ownership fighting and getting into legal battles

The dodgers didn’t build anything.. Take away all the media and TV revenue and they would be in the middle of the pack. How do you know those players want to play for the dodgers? Maybe it’s the money that attracts these players to that team. You wave 300 million in front of someone…anyone would take it…Padres waved 144 million in front of Hosmer, he knew he couldn’t get that from any other team so he joined the Padres. In the end, money talks ….plain and simple

        Best organization?

        Hardly. Richest definitely.

The best organization wouldn’t need to spend billions of dollars to win a funky 2020 World Series and an actual 2024 World Series.

Between 2000-2024 dodgers have spent nearly 7 billions dollars on player pay roll. More so the “best organization” has completely abandoned their “home grown player” moto opting to just buy championships. Definitely not the best. Definitely the richest. Not much of an accomplishment.

Dodgers had the best development in baseball we were told

And they abandoned it and bought championships. Which is fine. But not nearly as impressive

Sure. Padres can’t develop guys to save their life.

But buying guys isn’t as impressive as winning it with guys you developed.

          Regardless who it is

In this case dodgers think them buying World Series is as impressive as times the cardinals or giants won it all those years developing the nucleus. Not really when you’re spending billions of dollars to do so.

The rays making playoffs on a fraction of dodger costs is more impressive than big money teams winning it all

LA has a geographical advantage over pretty much every other team. The advantage they have over the Padres is they are the champs and have a huge payroll.

One of the main reasons Sasaki is going to LA is because they are good. And one of the main reasons they are good is because they spend a ton of money. So yes it is about money.

People don’t want to admit that the Dodgers are the best run team in MLB because it hurts their feelings that they do everything they possibly can to constantly improve.

While I hope he signs with the Padres, there’s a bit of sense signing with the Dodgers. They already have a star rotation but their pitchers have been injury prone the last couple of seasons. That makes Sasaki’s presence even more important if it happened again. He wouldn’t be a small fish in a big pind. He would be a big fish in a big pond.

Nobody said that. The rich teams, like the Dodgers, take advantage of a system that is set up to be taken advantage of by the MLB. How they along the the players union haven’t implemented a salary cap along with a floor is beyond me. It would only be good for the game, and wouldn’t hurt the players at all if the floor is high enough. Don’t think they’ll ever be able to fix international free agency. I can see the players side thinking they’d lose out on too much on money, which they probably would.

For what it’s worth, I was always a firm believer that we had a good run at Roki, and if he chooses to sign elsewhere then so be it. It’s not the end of the world, and the season hasn’t even started yet! Cheers to all compadres. Go Pads

Injuries happen. They have a history of dealing prospects and youth to fill holes midseason. They did it last year. I would not get too attached to prospects if I was a Dodger fan. Which is good. I wish my team would just go out and dominate like these guys.

That’s impossible to say because we don’t know what is on Riki’s wishlist. If he wants to be the “Top guy” on his team, better training facilities and a smaller spotlight, then Toronto certainly has an edge over LA. If he’s more interested in a better chance at a World Series, playing with more elite talent and being in the West Coast, then Toronto can’t compete.

They are 2 completely different markets and situations, but obviously there’s something drawing Sasaki to both.

I hope that when this is over, Preller comes out and explains why the team has not gotten a catcher. Don’t give me Maldonado.

With no Roki I find it likely it went from 1 maybe two, to 2-4 players on the roster being dealt.

Arraez, Cease, Suarez, cronenworth, king, peralta, Matsui. Start the bidding…I get some have no value but they can still be moved.

Certainly what I would do. Been saying this for a while now the Padres had a window and it’s already closed. Some of it isn’t their fault they play in a tough division. But realistically they could be the 4th best team in that division right now. Time to sell and try again in a couple years.

San Diego has a vastly superior team to, say, St. Louis. They could trade Arraez and still be in the wild card mix. If they are not, then can still move Cease and Suarez at mid-season.

The Padres aren’t in the wild card mix. They aren’t that good. Yeah they might be superior to the Cardinals in 2025 but after Arraez and Ceass and King leave then what? Back to a doormat.

The padres still have an open window. They need 2 more starters and 2 outfielders.

It’ll be tough if they can’t spend any money. One of Cease or King has to go for more future value if they no longer have spending capacity. 2026 will be a rehabbing Musgrove and 40 year old Darvish in the rotation & then nothing else. They’ll need to address that

MVP type seasons from Merrill and Tatis Jr ( just needs to play 140+ and the numbers will be there )

Arraez will to full Tony Gwynn and not just hit .350 but will hit 40 doubles and walk 70 times !

There pen is usually nails plus AJ will add pieces early n often during the season if the two rookies don’t look like they are ready for primetime

Right now they’ve got an unbalanced lineup but there is plenty of time to add, subtract, and make every possible adjustment.

Padres gave reloaded their farm systems.
Best International players signed over the past few years.

Two franchise style players on the way in late ’25 or early ’26
          SS DeVries and Catcher Salas.

Padres do very well in drafting MLB and signing free agents.
In most trades, they do well also.

Padres are only 1-2 trades from the playoffs again next year.(Cease, Suarez and Arraez trades in separate deals
would bring back top young major league and major league ready players to compete for the playoffs in ’25).

Padres need: 2 young cost controlled starters,
          a LF and a Catcher/1B.

They can get those young, cost controlled players by making deals with teams with “loaded” farm systems of young players blocked from MLB by star players.

Start with the Orioles and work their way around the league.

Orioles need a new #1 Starter after losing Corbin Burns.
Orioles have young players that can be packaged in a deal for RHSP Dillon Cease:
LHSP Cade Povich, RHSP Chayce McDermott,
C/1B Sam Bassallo, LF Heston Kjerstad, Coby Mayo and many more.
Get 2 or 3 major league ready players and then move on to the next deal.
          Rinse repeat.

SS Leonaldis DeVries and C Ethan Salas
were the top players in 2 International signing periods’ and both signed with the Padres and will be ready by ’26.

Brew- if they got Roki it gave them options because he cost basically nothing.

Now they have to fill those holes with what I believe is no money. So instead of likely trading say Arraez, now they need to trade multiple people to fill all the holes.

They can trade one of Arraez or cronenworth and be fine still. They can trade suarez and have a good pen still. It’s gets real tricky trading a starter. If they can’t get another decent starter trading Suarez and say Arraez then they will likely need to deal one of king or cease. So they can get a starter then have enough money left to sign another starter.

Now if you told me they had money to spend then okay spend it.

Just hard for me to see a re-build with Manny, Bogaerts, Musgrove, Darvish, Tatis, Cronz and Merrill in place. In fact I see a re-build much more difficult (trading those long-term guys) for them financially than letting er ride at least in 2025. Maybe you mean trading Arraez or Suarez to fill other holes, but that doesn’t fit the rebuild concept to me, more like re-tooling.to compete for playoffs in 2025.

It’s very weird that not one other reporter can confirm the padres are out. Just the guy who knows we are signing at least one international free agent.

We do have more money than the dodgers. We can get up to 4m more if needed. Perhaps we are still in this thing. It’s possible Preller talked to Riki’s camp. Told them their prospects were about to sign elsewhere and got the green light that it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

I know it maybe a long shot but it would be weird to just eliminate one team of 3. To go along with nobody else being able to confirm the padres are out.

Keep Arraez, the return would be negligible at this point with him coming off his worst season. I bet he has a nice season (better) getting healthy and warrants a QO at seasons end being a young FA with a nice resume coming off a 3 or 4 win season.

All those other guys I would shop hard. Get some more long term (i.e. cheaper) talent in the fold for this and future seasons.

Preller did his best work last year when his hands were tied so let him cook.

Padres can trade a number of players and if they can hit on some of those returns still compete next year.

The one thing the season may depend on is if players like Morejon can join the rotation and thrive.

Cease I think is gone, one of Arraez or cronenworth likely gone. Then Suarez or another pen arm or two will likely be traded. Along with some farm hands.

This will free up 34m or so. Trades should fill a couple 2-3 holes. Then you can fill the rest with the money saved.

If the dodgers Yankees etc didn’t have other teams to play they wouldn’t have a huge local tv deal. There has to be other teams play for the dollars to work. Baseball should adopt a system where every team puts 50% of their local tv money into a pot and it’s divided equally among all teams. This would still give the larger markets more money but would close the gap significantly amongst the mid and small market teams who right now only exist to feed the major market teams. After all there is no fat tv deal for major markets team without the mid and small markets playing baseball

I disagree that the Padres are out of the running for Sasaki. Yes, they now have less International pool money than the Dodgers, but by signing Alvarez and de la Cruz they’re showing Sasaki that they are getting players who will eventually make the team better. Sasaki will sign for six years. Alvarez and de la Cruz, and presumably others, might be ready by then. It shows that Preller is building the farm system without spending a lot. That might show Sasaki that the Pads aren’t standing pat.

      Avenger,

I don’t think the difference between $3 million and $6 million means he is absolutely not signing in San Diego. It does make it less likely.

Honor or meiyō is an extremely important thing in the Japanese culture and not following through on a commitment you made to other players to sign him would reflect poorly on the team. Bushido, the Samurai code of honor, is still very much present in Japanese culture today. The values of Bushido, such as honor, respect, and discipline are instilled in athletes from a young age.

The endorsement $$ he would earn as a Dodger is exponentially greater than the Pads or Jays. If money is the deciding factor for Sasaki the Dodgers are a no-brainer. The endorsement pathways and partners the Dodgers have established for their Japanese players cannot be topped.

Padres have been getting very close the last few years.
And, they have eliminated the Dodgers from the playoffs a few times.

Wait until the next wave off top young international talent starts arriving in San Diego in late ’25 and early ’26.
SS Leonaldis De Vries, Catcher Ethan Salas
      and many more each year.

Padres just need to hold onto their future diamonds players
and not trade them away for old, expensive, declining veterans,

It appears that New Ownership has tightened the leash on Preller.

      Hold your horses!

AJ Preller and the Padres were just waiting for the outcome of the
      Sasaki signing.

Next, expect a flurry of blockbuster trades from AJ Preller
that will keep the Padres in playoffs contention:

Dylan Cease will be traded and the return will be 2-3 top young players major league prospects that can play in MLB right now.

Padres All Star Closer Robert Suarez could also be traded for a package of great, young major league and major league ready players(3-4).
      Padres have bullpen depth..

Arraez could be dealt (Yankees or other contender could use a 2X batting champion to lead off or bat 2nd).

Preller will land multiple young starting pitchers, C/1B a LF and more
who will keep the Padres on strong contention in the NL West.

Preller is already “restocking the farm” with great drafts and international signings.
The last 2 drafts, the Padres landed the top international players
SS Leonaldis Devries and Catcher Ethan Salas.
Those 2 players are “untouchable” in trades and will
      be stars in MLB.
They will be starting for the Padres in ’26 after a late cup of coffee in ’25.

AJ Preller gets a lot of criticism for trading away top young talent.
I was one of his biggest critics when he traded to bring Soto to SD.
The Padres would not have this problem if they had kept RHSP MacKenzie Gore, SS CJ Abrams, OF James Woods, CF Robert Hassell III
and emerging Closer (minors) Jarlan Susanna.

However, I give credit where credit is due: the Padres actually played better last year after they traded Soto and made other trades that
spread their money and assets around to many team needs and did not spend it all on 1 player Soto.
Yankees are learning that same lesson.

Friedman is a great GM, his time in Tampa proved that, and with no financial restrictions and a commissioner hell bent on helping him, we’re seeing real video game stuff.
Let’s not forget this team put competitive bids on Soto, and will still probably by another top reliever.
How are the rest of the league supposed to build a fan base when the world’s prospects can choose to chase their idols and avoid competition?

In fact, in some small way, it benefits the RS. If LA spends their int’l budget on Sasaki, then the RS int’l spending is worth 3.3% more.

Why does Toronto think they have a chance?
sure they have a bit more money in the pool, but as a new entry into USA game LAD will give him 2 legendary friends who speak same language and bought to win which should ease him into being a 4th starter maybe 5th.

He will have a chance to pitch without a worry of runs because they likely will be winning the hitting portion for him.

While Toronto gives nothing of that – he will have spotlight on him more there and he will have to bear down to pitch….

the ultimate goal of his is to earn the megamillions which in LAD he is certain to get it as soon as possible.

As a Dodger fan for nearly 60 years, I feel compelled to remind the whiners that the Dodgers will sign no other international prospects as a result of the Sasaki deal, and that the penalties they pay for being above the salary “cap” subsidize every other team in MLB. They will pay TWICE for guys like Teo Hernandez. Your team gets paid because Teo plays for a free spender, like the Dodgers, Mets or Yanks.

Do I feel good about myself? Of course. Roki Sasaki has zero impact on my life, nor does the MLB. As for the second query, I prefer when the team keeps and develops its own players and rides them to success (Bellinger, Seager, Kershaw, Smith, Lux, Vesia, Stone, Gonsolin, May, Miller, Buehler). But they have a limited window here with the current roster. Freeman is 36 this year. Mookie an Ohtani are in their 30s. So they’re going for it.

Do not want to go back to the time when the Dodgers and Yankees

It isn’t over until it is over.
With Sasaki’s hero and mentor Yu Darvish pitching for the Padres, they may still be in play.

Also, the Padres can still offer a competitive bid for Sasaki’s services with the Dodgers since the Padres have the bonus money to cover both these 2 signings and the Sasaki signing.

Thjey have 3M more in international bonus money than the Dodgers.
If Sasaki wants to go to the team with the highest bonus money pool, then it would be the Blue Jays.

Just a note, Carlos Alvarez is a former OF that converted to a pitcher last year. He is now 6’5″ and a lanky 165-170 lbs. He still has some growing to do and certainly a lot of muscle to put on that frame.

He was sitting 93 by the end of the summer with his FB topping out at 95. He has good command for a young pitcher, especially one that has very little time on the mound, and he does not overthrow to get that velocity. It’s a smooth, easy, repeatable delivery. When he fills out his velocity will increase. Sitting high 90s and topping 100 by the time he is 19-20 is probable.

All three of his pitches grade out as 50 FV or MLB average. As he continues to progress as a pitcher, I would project him to have two and possibly all 3 pitches he throws grade out as plus. Most importantly, that comes from the left side.

To me, his ceiling is higher than De La Cruz who has no plus tools, but all 5 tools are average or above. The one thing going in De La Cruz’s favor is an advanced understanding of in game situations.

Both of these signings could skip the DSL and go straight to complex league in Arizona.

Don’t count out AJ Preller and the Padres.

They have not even done the majority of their “hot stove league”

I can see Preller loading up with top young players in MLB and MLB ready.

Trade bait for various deals would include:
    RHSP Dylan Cease
    All Star Closer Robert Suarez
    2 time batting Champ Arraez

Those 3 players would bring back a boatload of young, cost controlled, major league talent from various MLB teams that could help the Padres be playoffs competitive in 2025.

For what? Orioles and Rangers trading Padres the backup catchers the Padres already passed on signing in FA? The Twins trading the Padres Vasquez and paying 100% of his salary?

Padres need a catcher and those are the only options on those 3 teams. Not going to see the Padres picking up Rutschman or Jeffers. No reason to trade for Heim unless Preller sees a huge rebound coming from him that no one else does and then that creates huge hole for Rangers.

Preller has said he will add a MLB caliber LF and catcher that is it. Don’t expect huge trades this season because the Padres don’t have huge holes. At least not compared to what the team had going into the Seoul Series last season.
