Rockies Hire Scott Oberg As Pitching Coordinator

By Anthony Franco | January 2, 2025 at 7:58pm CDT

The Rockies are hiring former reliever Scott Oberg as a minor league pitching coordinator, reports Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. It’s the first full-time instructional position for the 34-year-old since his retirement as a player in 2023.

Oberg has been something of an unofficial coaching presence in Colorado for a couple seasons. He has worked as a part-time consultant for the team’s minor league affiliates and their MLB staff. That served as a trial run for what was always envisioned as a larger coaching or player development role in the long term.

The relationship between the Rockies and Oberg stretches well beyond a decade. Colorado drafted him out of UCONN in the 15th round in 2012. It was an excellent pick, as the righty reached the majors three years later and spent a half-decade in the Colorado ’pen. He posted consecutive sub-3.00 ERA seasons in 2018 and ’19 and was a key high-leverage piece for skipper Bud Black.

Colorado signed Oberg to a $13MM extension over the 2019-20 offseason. Unfortunately, his playing career would come to a close before he could throw another MLB pitch. Recurring blood clots and thoracic outlet syndrome in his throwing arm made it impossible for Oberg to play again. He worked in Colorado’s scouting department to provide some off-field value over the life of that contract. He announced his retirement when it expired.

Saunders notes that Oberg has earned a master’s degree in sports management from Georgetown since retiring as a player. Given his strong relationship with the Colorado front office and coaching staff, there’s a good chance he’ll move quickly up the team’s pitching development ranks in the next few seasons.

I’m surprised the Rockies even have a pitching coordinator.

If nothing else, the Rockies seem to do a great job for the most part in being an organization where players enjoy continuing their professional career, once their playing career ends. That doesn’t help with wins and losses, but it’s still something cool to see.

Duffys cliff…they need the in-house former players because the quality people they had who built their series team bolted for Atlanta and other places

Well, he’s a pitching coordinator for the Rockies, what have you done in comparison?

Actually my username is a pitch that I developed and taught for a long time…deadly…can make it break three different ways…in, out or down…you can take something off but it still looks like it comes out as a fastball because you can throw it like a two seamer or four seamer. .A cross between a sinker, cutter/screwball, and changeup. There are guys currently throwing this pitch in MLB I have modified this pitch so many times depending on the pitchers hand size and it is amazing
      Thanks for asking

PS…I bet they didn’t teach that pitch at Joes Barber College but if your ever in the San Diego area…hit me up and I would be more than happy to show you how to throw it. Until then please tell your mom I said hi.

Why didn’t ML pitching coaches teach the Sweeper years ago if they knew about it back then? LOL

I was replying to the poop guy…I have no clue what an RB burner acct is and I have never seen this football slider thing and I do get tired of the constant spam about it. I have taught a slider but it’s a seam pitch instead of a slice pitch…much easier on the elbow.

An underrated contributor to the Rockies most recent decent teams. Solid bullpen production at low cost while the team was wasting big money on flops like Bryan Shaw and Wade Davis, so he deserved that extension money even though blood clots kept him off the mound.
Seems like somebody who can contribute in a nonplaying capacity.

The Rockies missed out on a great opportunity by not hiring Roger Beshens. He carefully tracked every Dbacks slider pitch for the Dbacks in 2024, which assisted Ryne Nelson, this ultimately led Nelson becoming the top pitcher for the Dbacks toward the end of the season.

I would have thought your first comment would have been along the lines of Roger not being interested and holding out for a big league position …and that it would be the first post on any new pitching coordinator hire.
Losing your enthusiasm, T, or just off for a nap?

Why didn’t pitching coaches teach the sweeper years ago if they knew about it?

If Brent Strom had known how to throw the sweeper many years ago he wouldn’t have needed Roger Beshens to come to the Dbacks clubhouse to teach it. This led to Dback pitchers learning about it and not wanting to join the Roger Beshens Football Slider club.

I apologize for hurting your arm because I didn’t know any better teaching you that traditional slider. If I knew the Roger Beshens Football Slider back then which is the sweeper I would have taught it to you. It wasn’t from lack of caring, just lack of knowledge.
I can forgive you but never forget. BS

Back in the 50’s an 60’s the “Sweeper” was called “The Roundhouse Curve”. Pitch wasn’t invented by Roger what’s his name. These pitching lab guys are simply using their knowledge of pitch tracking devices like Rhapsoda and using that to provide information that players can see if they can add that pitch to their arsenal

Roger what’s his name is Roger Beshens, Brent Strom invited Roger Beshens in the Dbacks Clubhouse May 23, 2024 so Roger could show how he teaches his football slider and Strom was very interested in how Roger Beshens shaped his football slider. If a pitcher does not know how to shape the Roger Beshens Football Slider the metrics alone can’t help adjust the pitchers Roger Beshens Football Slider.

You do realize if Glasnow, Snell, Flaherty…threw from a lower arm angle they would throw the now so called Sweeper?
The Sweeper and Gyro is the Roger Beshens Football Slider. Arm angle dictates the break, it’s the same Roger Beshens Football Slider. BOTH the Sweeper and Gyro have the same Roger Beshens Football Slider Grip, tilt and wrist action.

Roger Beshens did not invent the roundhouse curve. Instead he came up with his own pitch, the Roger Beshens Football Slider which is also known as the Sweeper and Gyro Slider.
If pitching coaches had known how to throw that Football Slider in the past they would have taught it. Roger Beshens started and led the Football Slider in MLB starting in May 2018.

Sport Management is not one of those BS degrees. Tons of things you can do with it and many people who work in professional or collegiate athletics have that degree. However I agree that a Phd in Business and MANY Higher Ed degrees within Education are a joke.
