Braves Sign Jake Marisnick To Minor League Deal

By Darragh McDonald | February 13, 2025 at 12:41pm CDT

Outfielder Jake Marisnick is in camp with the Braves as a non-roster invitee, reports Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. That indicates the Equity Baseball client signed a minor league deal with the club.

Marisnick, 34 in March, signed a minor league deal with the Angels last winter. He spent the year playing in Triple-A for that club, getting into just 54 games around a few stints on the injured list. He performed well, hitting .283/.368/.551, but didn’t get called to the majors.

The veteran has an established track record at this point as a glove-first outfielder. From his 2013 debut to the present, he has logged 5,357 innings on the grass with 80 Defensive Runs Saved and 52 Outs Above Average. The latter method didn’t come into existence until 2016, so the sample size is a bit smaller. Only nine outfielders have a higher DRS tally during Marisnick’s career and all but one of them spent more time out there than him. He’s also 11th on the OAA board, again trailing only one player with a smaller sample of innings played.

However, his offensive contributions have been less consistent. He’s had a few good showings with the bat but has hit .228/.281/.385 in his career overall. That production translates to a wRC+ of 81, meaning he’s been 19% below average on the whole.

Atlanta has some question marks in its outfield. Ronald Acuña Jr. is still recovering from tearing his ACL last year and could miss about a month of the season. Until he’s back, the projected outfield consists of Michael Harris II and Jurickson Profar in two spots. A third spot could perhaps be a platoon between Jarred Kelenic and Bryan De La Cruz.

Profar is coming off a monster season at the plate but has been wildly inconsistent and isn’t a great fielder. Kelenic’s production has been up-and-down, both offensively and defensively. De La Cruz is a poor defender and is coming off the worst offensive showing of his career thus far.

The club has Carlos Rodriguez and Eli White on the roster, but White is out of options and might get squeezed. Rodriguez hasn’t yet made his major league debut and has just 31 games of Triple-A experience. The club previously brought in Conner Capel for some non-roster depth and now Marisnick gives them a bit more. If a path opens up to some playing time, he’ll give Atlanta a glove-first outfield option off the bench.

I’ll never understand these hare-brained comments, why are they all over this site?
Do you need a dopamine release with every transaction? What negative impact could Jake Marisnick possibly have on you or the Braves 2025 outlook?

Its basically because these are the only moves the Braves have made this offseason. Cheap “depth” type moves that don’t move the needle then they wonder why they get eliminated in the first round every season against the big boy spenders.

They paid Profar $14M per year for 3 years. Nothing similar between this move and the Profar deal. Atlanta has close to a complete roster, so not many moves were needed this offseason. They could use one more starter and I expect them to add one during spring training.

What team to you root for? Because my favorite team the braves have won a world series in the last 5 years. Has your team? When was the last back to back world series winner? It doesn’t happen often. Winning the world series might be the hardest thing to do in any sport. And getting bounced in the first round? Maybe last year, but every year before that we won the division and got a 1st round bye. So stop talking nonsense you trolling weirdo.

They brought him in as a depth option, because every team needs depth. Did you expect them to sign Bregman and stash him at AAA? Lol

I would have brought back Morton or taken a shot at one of the older vet pitchers. Would have re signed Minter as well. They are obviously going to try out their internal options in the rotation. I am assuming AA is leaving money in reserve to fill gaps at the trade deadline and that’s why he didn’t gamble with one of the older pitchers on the market. Some Braves fans are just frustrated as the Mets spend big. Mets and Phillies are not going anywhere and the losing Morton and Fried hurt. The Braves really need bounce back seasons from Olson and Riley and others to stay healthy.

Yankees are crazy to give Fried that money. Thank God we didn’t.

Oh I didn’t know that every single team makes minor league deals. Including those “big spending teams” like the dodgers. You’re a lower.

Wow, he’s still around. He was great on the base paths, in centerfield for the Astros and even hit an occasional bomb. Truth though, Jake NOT From Rake Farm.

Let us see how all this plays out. I think AA will make the necessary adjustments as the season progresses, if he feels the need. I am one who believes that the team that wins the World Series is the team that gets hot at the right time. The best team on paper is not always the team that wins the World Series. This fact is why I love baseball more than any other sport.
