Poll: Will The Cubs Extend Kyle Tucker?

By Nick Deeds | February 12, 2025 at 4:50pm CDT

The Cubs have made a number of moves to push in towards a return to the postseason in 2025 after missing the playoffs in five of the last six seasons and not winning a playoff game since the club’s NLCS loss to the Dodgers back in 2017. After decent showings the past two seasons, both of which saw the club finish with 83 wins, the Cubs have gotten more aggressive in their efforts to improve. While the additions of Matthew Boyd and Colin Rea to the rotation mix, Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brasier to the bullpen, as well as Jon Berti and Carson Kelly to the bench are all more or less par-for-the-course moves for the Cubs in recent years, they made a major splash by swinging a trade with the Astros for Kyle Tucker.

The acquisition cost was steep, as they gave up top third base prospect Cam Smith as well as All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes and young right-hander Hayden Wesneski, but the acquisition of Tucker was a major upgrade for the lineup relative to Cody Bellinger and figures to provide the Cubs with an impact star who can anchor their lineup. Tucker’s slated to become a free agent after the 2025 season, however, and while youngsters Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcantara are waiting in the wings at Triple-A as potential replacements for Tucker in 2026 it would be an incredibly tall order to expect either youngster to become the sort of to player Tucker has fashioned himself into.

With the club having already given up substantial assets to just land one year of Tucker, the minds of many fans immediately go to an extension. It’s far from uncommon for star players traded just before their final year of team control to promptly extend their stay with that new club, with Francisco Lindor, Paul Goldschmidt, and Mookie Betts among the most notable star position players to work out long-term extensions shortly after being traded. With that being said, it doesn’t always work out that way as the Yankees found out when they gave up a massive haul for one year of Juan Soto’s services last winter only to watch him depart in free agency back in December.

Soto’s record-shattering $765MM deal won’t be an even remotely realistic target for Tucker, who will crucially head into free agency three years older than this offseason’s star free agent. Even so, that massive contract figures to raise the bar at least somewhat on the price tag for Tucker’s services. After all, both lefty-swinging right fielders are among the most valuable outfielders in the game over the past few years. Tucker’s 19.1 fWAR since the start of the 2021 season trails Soto’s 24.6 figure, but that’s with Tucker having missed half of the 2024 campaign due to a shin injury. Tucker lacks Soto’s generational plate discipline, but the former’s .280/.362/.527 slash line is in at least the same ballpark as Soto’s .279/.423/.520 slash line.

As previously mentioned, Soto’s youth and stronger overall offensive contributions mean his deal will greatly eclipse Tucker’s. Even so, it’s wholly reasonable to think that Tucker could exceed the $330MM guarantee Bryce Harper landed with the Phillies prior to the 2019 season and even Aaron Judge’s $360MM guarantee from the 2022-23 offseason. With major market clubs like the Dodgers, Yankees, and Giants all poised to have a hole in the outfield next winter, it’s not hard to imagine the bidding for Tucker’s services surpassing $350MM or even reaching $400MM so long as he’s healthy and as productive as expected this year. Signing a player to that sort of deal would be completely unprecedented for the Cubs, who have never signed a player for more than the $184MM deal they gave to Jason Heyward prior to the 2016 season, and it seems unlikely that a Tucker extension would come at much of a discount.

While doubling the franchise’s record contract would be a bold move, its one the Cubs should be able to afford. Despite playing in one of the league’s largest markets, Chicago has tended to treat the first luxury tax threshold as something of a hard cap in recent years. That first threshold will sit at $244MM in 2026, when RosterResource projects the club to have just $136MM in guaranteed contracts on the roster. That’s before likely raises for arbitration-eligible players like Justin Steele and a decision on Shota Imanaga’s deal that seems likely to raise the southpaw’s salary, but there should at least theoretically be plenty of room in the budget for a Tucker extension even after considering those factors should the Cubs wish to work one out.

There’s plenty of reasons to wonder if the Cubs would really have the appetite to sign Tucker to a massive contract, however. As noted by The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney, the Cubs appear to be acting quite cautiously when it comes to guaranteed contracts that extend beyond the expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement in 2026. At the moment, Imanaga and Dansby Swanson are the only two players the club has guaranteed money to beyond the 2026 campaign. Even that ignores the possibility that Imanaga is allowed to opt out of his deal after the 2025 and ’26 seasons, which will depend on whether or not the Cubs are willing to pick up a series of club options that would extend his stay with the club through the end of the 2028 campaign.

One other potential wrinkle in the situation is Chicago’s pursuit of Tucker’s longtime teammate Alex Bregman. The Cubs have emerged as one of Bregman’s suitors over the course of the past month, and while they’re generally viewed as only interested in adding Bregman on a shorter-term deal (as was the case with their pursuit of Bellinger last winter), it’s at least possible that the club signing Bregman to a deal that guarantees upwards of $30MM annually could leave them uninterested in adding another high-dollar contract like the one Tucker figures to command.

What do MLBTR readers think about the situation? Will the Cubs and Tucker work out an extension before he reaches free agency in November? Or will Tucker follow in the footsteps of Soto and hit the open market? Have your say in the poll below:

Correct. Not a chance. He won’t get Soto money, but he’s going to want to test the market and see what he can get, and the Cubs won’t approach that potential level.

It’s not all bad I guess. Having Pressly around to mentor Hodge, He can probably teach him a lot. Hoyer even got the Astros to pay down his salary a bit which isn’t horrible. Signing Bregman even for the Bellinger deal would be foolish. Hoyer should save his money because if they sign Bregman and something happens to Pressly he’s gonna wish he had it back. Trading for Cease wouldn’t be an option for me. I love what Cease brings to the table but trading for a bunch of 1 year rentals shouldn’t be the way to go here. It’s what happens when you have a POBO/GM on his last year. He should have a muzzle on him to not be allowed to trade a bunch of the future. The bench to me is just as horrible as it was last year. Who on that bench can hit over .240? There’s no doubt they can win the Central, But should that REALLY be the goal here? IDK. I’ll watch and am cautiously optimistic but a lot of changeover has to go right. I hear they might teach Canario to play 1B. Would set up a possible platoon at 1B. I’ll be watching but with a hand over one eye. But I don’t see them winning a Playoff Series. And Tucker isn’t coming back. Just start dealing with it now folks.

Aloha Unclemike, agree with you. I do think the FO actually did a better job with the BP compared to the 2 previous seasons. Just think if Jed had the wherewithal at the time of the Tucker trade to ask for Pressly, say he’d pay for his whole salary and only send Paredes maybe Rojas or Triantos and Wesneski? No Cam Smith. Houston played those 2 trades for rentals very well.

Lastly, I hope someone in the FO is telling Jed if they sign Bregman they give up their 2nd and 5th round picks this year along with $1mil in international bonus signing money. I think Tucker has a great season and walks, hopefully Jed too. Mahalo!

Jed Hoyer’s aggression this off-season is simply CYA because his contract is up. Tucker will walk because Cubs fans will show up in droves no matter what happens with the club.

Players fall in love with Wrigley and those fans. Even guys who leave say they miss it. They won’t extend him now, but I think after this season, he’ll be much more amenable to it. It will cost a ton, but now that they fortunately lost out on Bregman, the added payroll space will leave them no excuse to not make him a serious offer.

If the Cubs put 425-450mil on the table now, that’s hard to pass on in event he misses a fair number of games again (regardless of reason). Doubt they offer that much.
Assuming Bregman goes elsewhere, it’s worth it for them to try. They won’t outbid NYY/Philly and if LAD/Mets want to add another monster contract.

Kyle Tucker is one of a very few top players not represented by Scott Boras. So we already know, he most likely won’t be holding out for less money, like many Scott Boras clients.

No history of extending. They were correct in not extending Rizzo, Bryant, Contreras , and Baez. Possible exception was Schwarber. Tucker is a Boras client, he’s going to free agency. Would like to see extension, but I doubt it.

They traded a lot to get him so I am hoping they are willing to pay him 400MM to lock him down before FA. Stupid Jed is prob already planning how to use the comp pick when they lose him.

Except they had already extended Rizzo. His team friendly extension would have expired at the end of the 21 season if they hadn’t traded him to the Yankees. He turned down what would have been his 2nd extension with the cubs after the 2019 season. Happ and Hoerner are also currently playing under an extension. So yes they do have a history of extensions in fact they’ve had quite a few recently.

Rizzo was offered a 5 year/$70 million extension during spring training 2021. Seemed like a low ball offer at the time. Seems like an overpay now as he’s received $56 million from the Yankees and will need to take a pillow this year.

I hope Tucker likes Wrigley but I don’t want him giving a discount or less years. I want him to have one of his best seasons ever and get a nice deal in the off season. After that, maybe the Cubs can get a new FO and owner. Mahalo!

“Never offered any player $200M+”…It’s not like the Cubs don’t have the financial might or resources to pursue this sort of player.

The Cubs are one of a very few MLB clubs that can draw well even when they’re losing for years at a time. All that said, investing so much money into one player can be DISASTROUS(Anthony Rendon)and very risky.

Personally, I think teams would do well to take that same amount(roughly $400M+)and spread it among 3 or 4 players, which will have more effect than locking up just 1 premium player.

I may be alone in this, but I fully expect the New York Yankees to be better this year(without Soto) than last year. Mainly because they gave $ to several people and not just Juan Soto.

Nope. I dont see any scenario where Joe increases Tom’s allowance and let’s him drop 400+mil on Tucker

As a Cubs fan (and I know it’s a huge risk)I would rather they put Owen Caissie in RF after Tucker walks. There’s zero chance they trade Happ as he has a full ntc for some reason. So ONKC could’ve been his replacement. I also know Caissie has yet to see a pitch in the ML but it’s so rare to find raw lefty power. I don’t have any doubt that he will make his ML debut this year and make a big impact. He also has a cannon for an arm. From what I heard from Cubs podcasts and YT channels he took some reps at 1st last year. So maybe it would be wise for the Cuba to put him at 1B a few times a week in spring training and then more in Iowa (if he doesn’t make the team) he could be a very valuable back up for Busch Craig Counsell is gonna have to work all 3 of Tucker, Seiya and Caissie into the lineup at some point this season. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later and doesn’t involve an injury to another player.

They will flip Tucker at the trade deadline and promote Cassie if he is playing well. They can then keep him another year longer and get another prospect for Tucker. This will continue the trend of having lots of decent prospects that are not true stars, and never paying for players that will actually help you win championships. The only thing we can hope for is that all of the slightly above average players have their best season at the same time.

I never said I wanted to trade Happ. I just find it ridiculous that he got a full no trade clause. And IF* the Cubs do more than “Break Even” and suddenly spend like they should be spending like and re-sign Tucker the. Caissie would be an ideal replacement for Happ. Who probably won’t leave or want to leave after his current deal is up. So I’m saying the Cubs put themselves into this pickle by giving Happ a full ntc. Partial would’ve been fine. If they could trade him he would bring at least 1 ML player back plus 2 maybe 3 prospects. That just ain’t gonna happen. Especially when Joe Ricketts spends his money like he’s shopping at a thrift store. That’s one thing Discount Jed loves. Minor league deals.

Bone bruises can really suck. I fell on my arm and it didn’t hurt walking around but Everytime I tried to pick something up it hurt for 6 months.

I say by the All- Star break he will sign a new contract for 10 yrs & 388 mil. He is exactly the kind of player Cub ownership has been waiting for to make face of franchise .

    I remember the Burlander trade.
Got 3 hopefuls instead of just nailing Tucker.
    Al didn’t trade well.

It depends, in part, on the type of season he and the Cubs have in ’25. If he has a monster season, becomes the face of the team and leads them deep into the playoffs I could see an extension. Ricketts could view it as a future return on the investment. However, with the CBA up after ’26 which could result in a salary cap, ownership may want to wait until that outcome before agreeing to any significant long term contracts.

Well, it’s possible. Given his age, ability and the fact that he’s not a Boras client, I can see something like that happening around the AS break. People saying the Cubs are “cheap” obviously haven’t looked at their payroll avg since Ricketts bought the team. They’ve proven that they’ll spend if they feel they’re legit contenders.

There is no reason for Tucker to consider an extension as he has yet to even play a game on the north side yet unless it’s a stark overpay that his agents don’t think he’ll get anywhere else

I’m surprised it isn’t 100% “No” There’s so way. First of all, Ricketts isbt going to sign off on a 300M+ contract. Second, he isn’t going to give up his chance to test the waters.

Soto has to be the most massive overpay hopefully ever. It can easily be argued that Kyle Tucker is a better player, so I don’t think 10 years at more than $400mil is out of the question. If the Cubs go there and outbid everybody else, then maybe. I kind of feel that the Yankees are preparing right now to outbid everyone

With the Cubs now out on Bregman, they should just offer Tucker $400 over 10 right now and eat this year since they are sitting on another $20-25 mil they don’t know what to do with. Tucker gets his big payday but you extend him at 28 rather than 29 minimizing by 1 year of age risk. I think trading the one year of cheaper control to entice Tucker before he hits free agency or even risks another injury might be attractive, especially with him coming off an injury year. He can lock in that $400 million safety net right now and the cubs avoid a FA competition where things could escalate out of control. No guarantees he takes it, but with the surplus dollars they have this year why not try? An extension for Tucker right now would make this offseason a huge win regardless of the other meh moves they made. Depending on how they structure the deal and what he is already set to earn this year, they should still have a little money left over for injury protection or an upgrade trade at the deadline. The deal also makes Cassie expendable adding a big trade chip for them to use at the deadline or next year.

All that makes sense. If they propose tearing up his last year now and make it 10/400 straight (or higher with deferrals)-that is a good no regrets final offer to make him turn down.
Regardless of explaining away the missed time last year as a fluke, there is a risk if a bunch of games missed second year in a row.
