Angels Select Tim Anderson

By Anthony Franco | March 25, 2025 at 7:17pm CDT

The Angels announced that they’ve selected shortstop Tim Anderson onto the MLB roster. The Halos also confirmed a few previously reported moves: the promotion of reliever Ryan Johnson, the signing of Nicky Lopez to a one-year deal, and the DFAs of lefty relievers José Quijada and Angel Perdomo.

Anderson, a two-time All-Star, gets another rebound chance after a second straight poor season. He hit only .214/.237/.226 in 65 games for the Marlins last season. Miami had signed him to a $5MM deal in the hope that he’d become a midseason trade chip. Instead, they ended up releasing him before the All-Star Break. Anderson sat out the remainder of the season and signed an offseason minor league contract with the Halos.

The righty-hitting Anderson appeared in 21 games this spring. He hit .263 with one homer and three steals in as many attempts. It wasn’t a dominant showing, but he’ll provide speed and decent contact skills off Ron Washington’s bench. Zach Neto is opening the season on the injured list. Kevin Newman will probably get the starting shortstop job. Anderson, Lopez and Kyren Paris could all work off the bench. The Angels might be without Yoán Moncada to open the season, which could push Luis Rengifo to the hot corner. That’d leave second base open for one of the depth infielders.

Meanwhile, Michael Huntley of The Orange County Register notes that the Perdomo and Quijada designations all but officially secure Garrett McDaniels’ spot on the Opening Day roster. The Angeles took the lefty out of the Dodgers system in the Rule 5 draft. McDaniels got ground-balls at a massive 67.9% clip over nine innings this spring. He only managed four strikeouts and walks apiece, but the 25-year-old’s game is built around grounders.

“He was great for 7″…If he was even “good” for 7 years, he’d be in the middle years of an 8 year contract, not trying to make a development team called the Angels.

If he was “great” for “7 years”, he’d be in the middle years of a 10 year, extended deal. Had you said, He was pretty good for 2 or 3 years, I wouldn’t even challenge the statement.

The guy was great. Only about 1200 players in the history of the game have more career hits than Anderson. He may not have been MVP-level, but he has had a great career. Even if he is one of the more unlikable players of the 21st century.

Consider the male population that played baseball in school or as a youth. Consider the number who tried to make the majors but never could. Then to consider only about 1200 players that have ever played at the highest level had more hits. Once this is taken into account he is/ was great compared to just about anyone else that ever played the game. Is he great compared to current major league players probably not.

Not sure why signing Nicky Lopez doesn’t make sense to anyone. The Angels were the worst team in baseball as a infield collective in terms of OAA. Nicky Lopez has a career 60 OAA.

The Angels have 2 sinkerball pitchers that get a ton of ground balls in Soriano and Kochanowicz.

Lopez can be a late inning defensive replacement or even start when Soriano or Kochanowicz starts.

@google. I’m not mad, about the Lopez signing just confused. Is moniak worse than Anderson. I get what your saying about the infield. Probably the worst the last 5 years. I can’t even list the 100 player’s they had in that time. I’m just concerned about outfield and Paris cancels out Anderson. Moniak isn’t the next Bobby witt Jr but he’s fine this year.

@Rex Is someone that was once good better than someone that was never good? Probably. Anderson spring should signs of life, while Moniak’s didn’t, just more of the same..

I have concerns about the lineup. They lead the Cactus league in SOs and were lowest OBP. I know some of that was Moniak, but not all of it.

@google just worried about the outfield adell can’t run the bags right without misjudging. Now he’s playing center. Not mad at the Lopez signing. just saying tim Anderson made the most sense to get released if you went that way because his defense isn’t great, and his bat dropped off.

          ================================
Just from my non-LAA fan POV, Moniak could still be a player. He had 8 HRs from Aug-Sep last year. When you have an OF with three righties, imho, Moniak is a pretty good fit.

@joebrady. Exactly i get it’s probably grasping at straws, just doesn’t make sense when Anderson essentially bumped him off the team, and tim isn’t a defender. He’s probably the same as Lopez hitting wise without the glove. Just wanted another year with moniak or heck even half a year. Plus we probably could use a backup centerfielder.

Paris made the team, for the love of God, put him at short.

If he plays CF, new swing, new position, that is too much to ask of anyone.

Man, I hope he can play short and they give him everyday ABs. If he does well, that will allow them to move Neto to second.

Anderson is just the kind of player that old-school Ron Washington loves. A speedy guy who’s made a career out of hitting for a high average and who doesn’t like to take a walk. And he also loves guys like Nicky Lopez, a good fielder and runner who was never much of a hitter. It’s not surprising they made the team.

Tim Anderson’s fall isn’t just bad luck—it’s proof that batting average alone is a poor measure of long-term hitting ability. Players who rely on speed and contact must develop either power or plate discipline to survive. Anderson never did, and that’s why he’s now a bench piece instead of an All-Star.
