Red Sox Notes: Abreu, Devers, Newcomb

By Nick Deeds | March 15, 2025 at 8:16pm CDT

Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has been out of action this spring due to a gastrointestinal virus that, as of last week, had kept the 25-year-old from even swinging a bat this spring. That led to plenty of questions about whether or not he would be ready in time for Opening Day, but as noted by Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic yesterday, he was cleared to play in today’s Grapefruit League game.

It was a major step forward for Abreu, who told reporters (including Christopher Smith of MassLive) that he expects to be ready for Opening Day later this month after acknowledging that he’ll need “some more reps” before he’s in regular season form. Notably, Abreu lost considerable weight as a result of the virus but has said that he doesn’t view that weight loss as a concern as he still feels as strong and mobile as ever. If Abreu does prove to be ready for Opening Day, that would be a major relief for a Red Sox lineup that appears poised to rely on a platoon of him and Rob Refsnyder in right field this season. The sixth place finisher in AL Rookie of the Year voting last year, Abreu won a Gold Glove for his work in right field while hitting .253/.322/.459 (114 wRC+), including a 126 wRC+ against right-handed pitching.

Abreu was joined in his return to the lineup by star teammate Rafael Devers. Devers has gotten plenty of attention this spring after the club’s signing of third baseman Alex Bregman, as the Red Sox have thusfar refused to anoint either Devers or Bregman as the Opening Day third baseman in the aftermath of Devers’s vocal opposition to a move off the hot corner. The slugger has struck a more conciliatory tone in recent days, however, as Bregman has been used almost exclusively at third this spring while Devers was slowed in camp after rehabbing a shoulder injury throughout the offseason. Devers was back in the lineup alongside Abreu today, however, and manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Smith) that the duo will get time on the backfields tomorrow before returning to the lineup on Monday as they ease back into regular playing time.

With Devers and Abreu both seemingly making good pace to start for the Red Sox on Opening Day, much of the intrigue in the final weeks of Red Sox camp seems likely to be focused on the rotation. Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Tanner Houck will feature in the club’s starting five, but the last two spots are up for grabs after Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello, and Kutter Crawford were all delayed in camp by various injuries. 40-man roster arms Cooper Criswell, Richard Fitts, and Quinn Priester have long been known to be in the conversation for those spots, but Cora told reporters (including Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe) today that non-roster southpaw Sean Newcomb is also in the mix for a rotation job.

Newcomb, 31, was a first-round pick by the Angels back in 2014 and had success in both the rotation and bullpen with Atlanta during the early years of his career. He posted a 3.87 ERA and 4.17 FIP in 332 1/3 innings of work across the 2017 to 2019 seasons, but the wheels came off during the shortened 2020 season and he’s struggled every since. Over the past five seasons, he’s posted a 6.66 ERA with a 5.49 FIP in 98 2/3 innings, the majority of which came out of the bullpen. The southpaw has been nothing short of dominant for the Red Sox this spring, however, and his 0.93 ERA in 9 2/3 frames has seemingly given Boston’s decision-makers enough to think about that he has a chance at starting the season not just on the roster, but in the rotation.

Good news. Great to see these guys on the field.

Aaaand they get to face Sale in their first game. Kinda brutal there.

swan – Sale is a classy future HOF’er who never should have been traded by the Red Sox, and he was already in midseason form yesterday going SIX innings against most of the Red Sox regulars. Atlanta knows how to handle a pitching staff.

And since nobody here has mentioned this because they don’t watch the games, as a tribute to El Tiante the future HOF’er Sale did a Tiant-style windup and delivery on his first pitch of the game. Great gesture by a great man to honor another great man.

cd – Yes not surprised at all.

So the soon-to-be 36-year-old Sale goes 6 innings yesterday against a formidable lineup, but the 25-year-old Crochet can only go 4 innings against a weak Twins lineup today. We were told he is at 100% with zero limitations, was that another lie? Will he be at best a 5-inning pitcher this season?

He has one ST start remaining, let’s hope he can take off the training wheels and go at least 5 innings.

This is one of the most ridiculous take aways you’ve had FPG vis a vie Crochet only pitching 4 innings. He struck out 7 and gave up two hits but yes let’s speculate that he’s hurt because the sox are going a little slower with him per FPG’s assessment.

What FPG had to say about the trade when it happened:
“This trade could go either way”

Now its a fact that the “Red Sox should never have been traded”. Revisionism at its finest.

The Bregman and Devers things has been going on here for months this offseason. Where is Bregman going to sign? If he goes to the Red Sox what happens to Devers?

So Bregman signs with the Red Sox and there are still 4 tiring articles a week on here because Red Sox fans are in a large market, opinionated, and continue click and post the same tiring points over and over as they agree and disagree with others.
    –
There are a lot of stories on MLB out there. Analysis that can be done that doesn’t depend on questionable stories, discussion of how much a player is being paid, or selected statistics to make a point one way or the other.

But you can also put at least part of the accountability on the shoulders of the Sox leadership. As soon as their pursuit of Bregman got serious, they should have had a plan as to how they were going to handle the fallout. They could easily put this story to bed by flat out stating that Bregman is playing third because he is a clearly superior defender and let Devers cry all he wants. In the end, that is what needs to happen. But until it does, they have nobody to blame but themselves for these continuing stories.

Seems to me. They handled it well

        1. All RS fans anticipated an earthquake when Devers was moved of 3B
        2. They waited til it was a sure thing to address it
        3. It’s seemingly handled well before OD with no anticipated after shocks starting the season

The press needed something to replace the owners are too cheap, too many other interests and no longer care about winning

With few other negative stories to rely on. They ran this story into the ground for as long as possible

The press now have to find new click bait. I sure hope and anticipate this current RS roster will make that challenging.

Spot on correct. It was handled perfectly. And TBH, there was always some chance that the RS options at 2B would not work out, and that Bregman would be needed there.

And there is always that tiny, tiny chance that Story gets hurt and that Bregman is required at 3rd.

There are any number issues with the RS (and everyone else). I’d have ranked this about #10.

Not taking into account that Yoshida cannot currently throw a baseball 60 feet yet, we can play Duran in LF or Yoshida. Which would you rather see there?

Rafaela will be playing in CF. Abreu will platoon with Refsnyder in RF.

Anthony has shown in spring training that he is ready. If Story gets hurt again and Rafaela has to move back to SS, Anthony could step into that OF mix. From what I have seen this spring I would prefer to see him on the roster instead of Yoshida.

I am hoping that Breslow has teams on the phone saying that as soon as Yoshida shows he is healthy that we will eat $40 million of his contract if you will send us some halfway decent prospects.

It’s what some might refer to as a rich-person problem. Yoshi will fill in at LF, DH when someone needs a rest, and PH. Way too expensive for that role, but that’s an accounting problem, not a W/L problem.

All of the “big 3” prospects have yet to be added to the 40-man roster. None of them are likely to be added to that until the team reaches a point where they’re sure they will be brought up to Boston to stay. That won’t be a temporary fix for some other player going on the IL.

I’d agree Mayer probably starts the year in AAA, but he’s had a nice spring.

If he was in the competition for 2B, I bet he’d make the roster. No one is really standing out between Campbell/Grissom so maybe they could consider Mayer at 2B.

I think they want to keep Mayer on the left side of the IF for now given the u certainty of the players manning those positions going forward. Bregman is only guaranteed to be here one year and Story has had trouble staying on the field. Best to keep Mayer used to playing on that side since that’s where he’s likely to be needed sooner than later

I thought about that, but Hamilton had a pretty decent year last year, And it’s only ST. but his K/W is 8/7 in 40 ABs. That was his weakness last year. I’d prefer to see what a Grissom/Hamilton platoon looks like. And Mayer could probably use some AAA ABs.

Yoshi has to be able to make a 270 ft throw before he can play in LF. Maybe a little less in Fenway. We used to call that playing long toss in college. Today he is about 200 ft short of that.

I agree that it’s an accounting problem and as of late Henry and FSG have shown that accounting problems are real world problems for them.

If I were the Blue Jays, I would rather have the Devers contract than meet Vladi’s asking price. So yes, I could see that working. The Jays don’t have a lot to offer Boston. It would mostly be a salary/attitude dump.

If they did, the asking price is too much for them to pay. They have like 1, maybe 2 (and it’s a big maybe) 2 guys in their farm system to start the talks and no money to give. It’s a moot point to bring them up. I’d think the Orioles might be the better fit within the division, but outside would be better option.

Bregman comes to the Sox and turmoil follows, who could have predicted that.
Cora is tied to Bregman and the cheating scandal. Bregman was his partner in crime, they have a history together,
Poor Devers, a Red Sox through and through, being kicked to the curb by the same Astro crime family that cheated his team.
Imagine being robbed of your rightful possession and then losing your job to the guy who robbed you.

Tang – Devers has played the 4th-most innings at 3B in MLB since 2017 and the 2nd-most innings since 2019. Why do you think that is? Because there’s just not that many really good 3B in MLB, if you’re an elite infielder you’re most likely playing up the middle.

Devers losing his 3B job was 100% Cora’s doing and Bregman is the only guy that would have made it happen.

It’s not like the Sox were looking to get a new 3B after all these years of poor fielding by Devers, he hasn’t gotten worse the past couple years.

Devers’ DRS was -13 in 2021.

It improved to -6 in 2022 (far better than guys like Escobar & Bohm) and -9 in each of 2023 & 2024.

I call bs. They weren’t trying to be good for a lot of that time so there was no way to improve on devers at the position. There are a number of great defenders at third in the league and some could’ve been had if they were willing to spend at all. The only reason he has been at third this long is because they didn’t care enough to address it. Now they are trying to win and it’s a problem.

Tang – That’s fine, you can call Simmons if you want but he has never had a clue when it comes to baseball.

Ummm …. Devers was the starting 3B in 2018, 2019 and 2021 when they absolutely wanted to win while they still had many of their star players under contract.

But I 100% agree with you they weren’t trying to win in 2022 thru 2024. Geez, I still remember all the morons back then arguing the Sox were trying to win ….. thanks for bringing back the bad memories! LOL!!

Perhaps you didn’t understand when I wrote “Devers losing his 3B job was 100% Cora’s doing”, please look at it again in context.

The Sox went into ST with Devers as the starting 3B, until Bregman signed after Cora heavily pressured management all offseason, those are facts.

Are you saying if the Sox hadn’t signed Bregman they would have traded for Arenado? Highly unlikely, the Cards want to dump his salary and the Sox had no interest in taking it on.

In 2018 devers wasn’t even in his full second year yet. Of course they gave him rope at that point. They needed cheap players at some positions and he wasn’t a liability for long enough then also, there is no proof anywhere that I’ve seen that Cora forced them to sign bregman late in the off season. If you think he has that much sway with John Henry then why haven’t they done more? Lastly, I do believe they would’ve traded for arenado if bregman went elsewhere.

Tang – Devers took over 3B for good in 2018, missing a few games because of a hamstring injury.

You’re denying how much Cora was pushing to sign Bregman? Seriously?

          espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/43780755/2025-mlb-…

“Red Sox manager Alex Cora wants Bregman badly”.

Are you also going to deny Cora clashed with Bloom, leading to Bloom’s firing?

How many big market teams would have stuck with a manager whose teams collapsed in the second half FOUR YEARS IN A ROW.

Are you not aware Cora has so much sway with ownership that John Henry wanted to interview him for the HOBO job Breslow eventually took?

There’s plenty of things you can legit question, but Cora’s status within the Red Sox hierarchy is certainly not one of them.

          Tang – I hope you’re right!

History has shown he’s got a lot of influence though.

          Re-hired after only a 60-game punishment.

Won a power struggle with his boss.

Got a contract extension after two last-place finishes.

And his new boss wasn’t allowed to bring in a new manager with him.

How often has a new HOBO been hired, but he’s forced to keep the manager of consecutive last place finishes?

Let’s see how things play out, time will tell.

Devers losing his job was 100% Devers doing. He stinks on defense. He is one of the two worst in the game. He refuses to get in shape. Sitting here at the game today and even though he hit a double, that boy is plump. Belly hanging over his belt.

Baseball – No doubt he needs better conditioning and his defense is poor, but again (you might not have seen my prior posts) he hasn’t been any worse on defense the past three years and neither Cora nor anyone else in Sox management gave him an ultimatum to improve the defense or lose the position.

If not for Cora’s man-crush on his cheating partner, Devers would still be starting at 3B if healthy. So yes, Cora was 100% the driving force behind the transition.

The Yankees are not without fault, but that doesn’t change the facts on the ground for Boston. They did it to Mookie, they are doing it to Devers.
At least the Yankees kept the face of their franchise, where it appears Bregman has become the new face of the Red Sox, not a good look.

The yankees understand the importance of legacy, that’s why they always have a legitimate face of the franchise that they keep at all costs. The Red Sox, under john henry, prefer insulting offers to their potential legacy players and trying to ruin the reputation of their staff as their kicked out the door.

Yankees – agree 100%. Red Sox continue to treat their homegrown talent horribly. They could have kept Devers in the loop with the signing, it’s really not hard. Instead they go completely behind his back to replace him 1 year into a 10 year extension, then have the balls to blame Bloom.

          It’s embarrassing.

I feel like the Red Sox (and more specifically Cora) made he agreement when they thought Bregman would not be a free agent target. They didn’t need to replace Devers at 3B, as Matt Chapman was a FA last off-season and there were no rumors about the Sox being in on him. So it’s a Bregman – Cora thing.

So they made a mistake, they need to own up to it. Dont just blame the guy that’s no longer there. There were better ways to spend that 40MM this off-season, such as the bullpen, rotation, and an actual catcher.

And the bigger question, what do they do with Yoshida? Benching Devers only to play Yoshida in the OF while claiming to be trying to put out the best defensive team is criminal.

Yank – I totally agree. Just because your team has had shadiness in the past it doesn’t mean you can’t bring facts about the current Red Sox.

I saw the look on Sale’s face as he walked by the Sox dugout yesterday and saw Cora & Bregman together, Sale looked like he was gonna puke. Those two guys are responsible for one of the lowest moments in his HOF career, he will never forget it.

The Sox could have possibly won consecutive WS championships if not for Bregman and Cora.

ghost – Exactly! Free agents stay away from the Red Sox for a reason, unless it’s one year overpays or massive overpays like Yoshida. How funny was it that both Yamamoto and Sasaki didn’t even bother to meet with the Red Sox before signing with the Dodgers.

Not only did the Red Sox lie when they promised Devers two years ago he would play 3B for many years, Cora repeatedly told him throughout the offseason they had no interest in replacing him at 3B and the offseason rumors were all fabricated by the media. Once again Cora is proven to be a liar, he also lied to Casas as well.

Sox have some tough decisions to make regarding the bullpen. We know Hendriks/Chapman/Fulmer/Whitlock are basically locks leaving a crowded field for the other 4 spots. Weissert and Bernardino have pitched really well and should get spots leaving two other spots up for grabs. Josh Winckowski and Justin Wilson have been terrible. Slaten and Guerrero haven’t pitched well either. Ottavino got lit up in his debut. I would probably take Kelly and Newcomb to round out the season opening bullpen

Rsox – Fitts has looked absolutely amazing. Hope he starts the season in the rotation and stays there.

I wouldn’t be too sure about Wilson. He’s experimenting therefore results aren’t that important, and the Sox aren’t paying him $2.25M to pitch in Woosta. He’s also got an appearances clause that could up his salary to $3M.

You got most of that right except 3B, 2B, and DH.

Devers will be at DH. Bregman will be at 3B where he has been for every game in spring training. Yoshida will be on the IL. 2B is still a question mark, but it won’t be Bregman. Grissom? Sogard? Campbell? None have hit well in spring training yet. One of them will win the job.

Hamilton looks like the guy who is going to start at 2nd. Cora likes him and he’s had a very solid spring so far. My guess he starts at second where he’s also very solid defensively.

I highly doubt that Bregman starts at second he hasn’t even played there this spring to my knowledge.

Sogard has had a really solid spring I’d like to see him get the nod as the utility guy. Campbell starts in AAA Worcester and Grissom has been disappointing so far in spring. He needs a really good finish to make the opening day 26 man.

Would love to see Anthony make it out of spring training but they are probably going to start him in AAA making Worcester must see TV to start the season. It’s a shame because I think Anthony is ready and would run with the opportunity in right field. It just doesn’t appear they are going to give the realistic opportunity to win the job out of spring training.

I posted my best guess. I think in the end Cora will want to break up the L/R hitters and will want Yoshida’s on base # in the line up vs RH starters and never wants to see him in LF. Vs. LH SP’s , I think he will go with Bregman at 3b, Ref in RF and Devers DH. I think Cora wants Raffella &; Duran to play almost every day and will use Hammy &; Romy as needed only. Bregman was always a SS until Corriera forced him to 3B — he will have no problem playing 2b/ss/3b as needed. Remember Bregman’s plan is: 1. have a big yr. 2. opt out 3. get a 5 0r 6 yr deal with out the draft pick issue. Grissom with the big 3 can use more AAA time both for development and service time.

But to answer your question, star players have been catered to for over a century.

Teddy Ballgame was statistically the WORST OUTFIELDER IN MLB from 1956-1960.

You think they would even dare demand he play 1B instead? Not a chance, not even one inning.

Breslow GO GET TREVOR BAUER he deserves to be given an opportunity as he too is innocent until proven guilty. You can also trade for Sandy Alcantara from Miami and SD Starters. Use Hamilton, Refsnyder, Gonzales, Yoshida and Sogard for trades, Crawford or Criswell too, free up theseog jams…we want Anthony and Mayer at a minimum and Campbell too if possible we need another healthy arm to start and or a lock down closer

Bauer was found guilty of violating the MLB Joint Domestic Violence rules. MLB found him guilty and suspended him. When he appealed his suspension an independent arbitrator also found him guilty.

Would take more than the guys you mentioned to get Alcantara. You know that. You are just trolling.
