Rockies Place Ezequiel Tovar On 10-Day Injured List

By Mark Polishuk | April 19, 2025 at 2:14pm CDT

2:14PM: Gomber provided an update on his situation to Just Baseball’s Patrick Lyons, saying that he hasn’t thrown since March 28 and that he received a PRP injection two weeks ago.  “It’s definitely going to be more of a buildup than it was in Spring Training,” Gomber said, though he noted that the range of motion in his left arm has returned in the aftermath of the injection.

12:16PM: The Rockies announced a collection of roster moves, including the news that shortstop Ezequiel Tovar has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 16) due to a left hip contusion.  Outfielder Brenton Doyle was also placed on the bereavement list (retroactive to April 17), and Colorado filled the two roster spots by calling up outfielder Jordan Beck from Triple-A and selecting Aaron Schunk’s contract from Triple-A.  Left-hander Austin Gomber was moved to the 60-day injured list to create a 40-man roster spot for Schunk.

Tovar’s injury adds to what has been a lackluster start to the shortstop’s third full MLB season.  While far from the only Rockies hitter who is struggling at the plate, Tovar is hitting only .212/.257/.303 through 70 plate appearances, after he delivered a .269/.295/.469 slash line (plus 26 homers and a league-leading 45 doubles) in 2024.  Colorado’s road-heavy early schedule might have something to do with Tovar’s slow start and the team’s lack of hitting in general to date, yet naturally the Rox were hopeful that Tovar’s continued development would include more consistency outside of Coors Field.

Beck is a former top prospect that will get another chance to show what he can do after a lackluster 207 MLB plate appearances over the last two seasons.  He’ll be joined on the active roster by Schunk, who also made his big league debut in 2024 in the form of 39 games and 98 PA (with a .234/.265/.330 slash line) for Colorado.  Schunk has spent most of his minor league career at third base but he has plenty of experience at the middle infield spots, so he can act as a utility infielder to add depth with Tovar out.  Kyle Farmer seems likeliest to move into an everyday shortstop role in Tovar’s absence, and Farmer has already been a fixture in the Rockies’ lineup given his hot bat.

Gomber started the season on the 15-day IL due to shoulder inflammation, and his move to the 60-day now puts him on the sidelines until at least the last week of May.  Gomber was seemingly on track for a relatively quick return to action in early April but his second minor league rehab start was scratched due to more shoulder inflammation, and that setback has now considerably lengthened the southpaw’s time away from Colorado’s rotation.

I think the Rockies should go on the IL as a team

Losing their two best players certainly won’t help them turn things around. At least Doyle will be back in a few days

But will he be healthy enough to play? He’s had a pretty big layoff prior to the death of a loved one.

Yeah. They were just being cautious with him. He had a slight quad strain, but nothing that he probably couldn’t have played through if the games really mattered. But it was one of those things that it was better to sit a few days and come back ready instead of risking making it worse and losing him for a month or two.

Crazy how many mistakes they make in picking their roster. They should’ve brought Miller up to handle short then since there is no prospect ready for outfield bring up Huira, kid is actually a good outfielder and would have raked in Colorado.

Used to be you just rubbed some dirt on it and back in you go! But these players are million dollar investments, gotta handle them with kid gloves.

Na I’d rather they expand the league by two and get shifted to the NL Central. Those West Coast start times are just brutal. They start an hour and a half after Rockies home games. Slide them into a division with the Cardinals, Cubs, and and expansion team in Salt Lake City or San Antonio.

They should just move the team, it’s ridiculous that people have to play baseball there.

They have plenty of resources. Despite their lackluster results, they’ve continued to draw huge crowds.

Plenty of resources in comparison to Central teams, but they are no where close to the California teams in terms of revenue. They could be competitive with the St’ Louises, Milwaukee, And even Cubs of the world. But it’s been proven they cannot compete with the Dodgers deep pockets

I disagree that it is because a lack of resources. Their owner has shown a propensity to spend when he feels like it, but the real issues are investment in player development, trading players at peak/near peak value to further invest in your farm system, and investments in international players.

The real problem is that the owner has publicly stated that he is content making the playoffs two times out of every decade. The owner has absolutely no competitive drive and it shows. He is more content in building a great entertainment complex in Denver than in building a great baseball club. All of that is his right since it is his team. But it does make it pretty frustrating to be a fan. I am fully invested in being a Rockies fan and have zero interest in following another club, but had I known then what I know now I probably would have selected a different team to support.

I’m a lifelong Red Sox fan, but I follow all teams closely and have some other scattered favorites. I get to watch the Rockies develop because we have their double A team here in Hartford, the Yardgoats, who play in an amazing stadium (MLB-like). It stinks knowing these guys aren’t going to go on to reach their full potential because an owner is just “content” with mediocrity. Warming Bernabel looks like he could be somebody someday.

They will be fine once the weather warms up. Colorado in April is almost good for the Rockies. But they tend to heat up when summer hits. Last year they had a long winning streak in June even though they still lost 100+

Not a big issue. His wRC+ is only 45, so he’s way below replacement level.
