The Pirates are selecting the contract of right-hander Tanner Rainey, according to a club announcement. Right-hander Justin Lawrence was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room for Rainey on the 40-man roster, while Rainey’s active roster spot will come at the expense of infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The veteran utility man is being placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, and the move is retroactive to May 1.
Rainey, 32, signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal back in December after being non-tendered by the Nationals just a couple of weeks prior. Originally drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft by the Reds, Rainey debuted with Cincinnati back in 2018 but was flipped to Washington prior to the 2019 season and has spent the vast majority of his career in the nation’s capital. In parts of six seasons with the Nats, Rainey has generally been a serviceable middle reliever with a 4.49 ERA (94 ERA+) and a 28.5% strikeout rate in his 182 1/3 innings of work.
Those numbers are decent enough, and he even earned some run as the club’s closer while the team was rebuilding in 2022 as he picked up 12 saves, but Rainey’s hefty 14.1% walk rate largely locked him out of the late innings with the club. His performance in 2024, when he pitched to a 4.76 ERA (86 ERA+) with a 5.42 FIP and a 12.6% walk rate against a strikeout rate of just 19.0%, was enough to convince the Nationals to move on from him rather than pay him an arbitration-level salary. Even so, the Pirates were interested enough in his strikeout-heavy profile to bring him into the fold as a potential depth option. He’ll now get a new big league opportunity with his third organization amid a season where the Pirates’ bullpen has largely been in flux.
Meanwhile, Kiner-Falefa exits Pittsburgh’s positional mix after hitting .280/.333/.330 in 109 plate appearances across his first 30 games of the year. The veteran’s lack of power means that line is overall good for a wRC+ of 87, but he’s been getting on base at a solid clip, keeping his strikeouts under control, and playing solid defense as the club’s reular shortstop. The Pirates will need to figure things out at the position without Kiner-Falefa’s steady glove, and that could be easier said than done. It would be a surprise if the Pirates opted to move Oneil Cruz back onto the infield dirt after he’s worked to improve as their everyday center fielder, which could leave the club to rely on Jared Triolo as its everyday shortstop for the time being.
As for Lawrence, it was revealed earlier this week that Lawrence was headed for a second opinion on his elbow injury. The diagnosis from that second opinion has not yet been revealed, but his transfer to the 60-day IL seems to indicate that Pittsburgh brass are expecting a fairly lengthy absence for their right-hander. It’s a frustrating blow to the Pirates’ bullpen, as his 11 1/3 innings of work with the club have been nothing short of fantastic with a 0.79 ERA and a 2.53 FIP. Lawrence was one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the Pirates’ young season so far, and now they’ll need to hope that Rainey or one of their other bullpen arms can similarly surprise and pick up the slack.
About time. Maybe they can win a few more games now??
Not likely.
BadMojo;
Mr. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a solid major league player….of which the ever-rebuilding Pirates have very few. The man is a gold glove 3B – not that 3B is that important of a defensive position – but he can also play a solid, above-average major league SS and 2B.
Most rebuilds fail. And one sign of it is when their frustrated fans take it out on some of the decent veteran players stuck on the team…..as if they’re supposed to carry a bunch of over-hyped under-performing young players.
Rebuild wasn’t good. Wasn’t even average. But not a failure. Failure was keeping Cherington Shelton and not getting someone who could fill in the missing pieces.
All they had to do was sign Canha to play 1b. Sign any outfielder not named Tommy Pham. Not used their worst relievers in the most crucial situations. 500 team if they do that. Bubba should have been called up already. Carmen to pen.
Agree about Cherington Shelton.
But to fill in missing pieces for a contending baseball team you have to have a foundation at least partially built of quality defense up the middle (that can also hit some) and pitching. Then the team has to be playing fundamental baseball on D and O – those 2 parts go back to Cherington Shelton. Baseball IQ and commitment to do “the little things” and be proactive is mandatory.
Anyway, what is is. It’s not just the owner not spending money…..it’s the owner letting the situation go on as long as it did. I think Pittsburgh sports fans are not dumb, they understand pro baseball as well as pro football and hockey. They deserve better. Mr. Skenes’ agent needs to get him out of there. They’ll ruin his career.
I gave them half a dozen names better than Pham. They don’t listen to me. Not fantasy names. Guys making around 5 million or less. Didn’t think Pham would be this bad but that’s the risk you take signing a older player.
There’s pitching talent in minors. All the websites have Konnor Griffin way too low. One of the best prospects in baseball. Too far away to help now but can be the piece to build around after Cruz Skenes. If they develop him. Although he may be able to develop himself. Incredible kid.
I read an article in the local Tribune Review that Pham has vision problems with his right eye
It’s a disease that I can’t remember the name of but if that’s his problem, then he needs to be placed on the IL and they need to bring up someone who can see the pitch when it’s thrown
I think he has a condition where his eyes have low lubrication.
He’s had that for years. Had surgeries. Could have got worse but I’d say just old and done for. Even the clueless pirates certainly gave him eye exam right? Let’s hope.
IKF may not hit for any power, but the guy gets on-base and collects some htis at a decent rate, because having him at the bottom of the line-up was worthwhile, even with a low OPS/no power. Losing him right now really hurts. The offense is doing better, but we still have way too many blackholes in Pham, Canario, and Triolo. They’re essentially running a 6-man line-up out there most of the time.
You’ve been talking to Peter Brand. Stats not special but he gets on base.
IKF is terrible. Don’t kid yourself.
Hasn’t looked terrible for the Pirates this year. .280 avg, above-average OBP, he’s been a very good 9-hole hitter.
It’s the #4 through 8 that’s been the problem
He is a great backup infielder on a good team. Obviously we are not a good team
Considering that IKF has no power or hits many doubles but steals bases, he should have been batting lead off so in the event Cruz hits one of those 500 footers homers, he’s not the only run being driven in
But it won’t matter much, weak hitting Triolo will take IKF’s place and Rainey’s 5+ ERA will certainly give runs back to the opponent even if they do somehow get a lead
Lol brighteyes thinks Canario is a black hole! He makes Shelton Cherington look like Einstein.
They called up peugaro earlier. In glad they did that. But why do they insist on bringing up these 30 something journeyman. They need the young guys up here. Mystifying move
They sent down straton and called up peurgaro
They should have played him over weak hitting Triolo.
Couldn’t have done any worse
I agree with you, but who knows what goes on in Shelton empty head
What young guys? There are none that are ready. TJ might be able to make it up later this year. Not as exciting as when drafted but looks like a MLB player.
Anyone over Triolo though. I’d rather see Peguero any day. Yorke needed some minor league time but get him up.
Frazier has been serviceable. Good when trying to contend but if they keep losing let a younger man get some reps. Maybe keep him as last guy and dump Pham. Pham goes first.
It’s called saving their money in the long run
What young guys?
I agree, Pham is indeed a black hole in the offense and Triolo is at best, a late inning replacement but I am surprised, Canario is putting the ball in play in each of his plate appearances
On the other hand, Bart is in a slump and should be batting behind Hayes
But overall this team has too many guys who can’t hit consistently to make them competitive
Another year down the proverbial drain
Some short 20 second clips every pirates fan should watch. I loved the Canario trade. A+. It’s paid off. He’s been excellent. It’s tragic they benched him for so long. If they had any idea of what they were doing they would never bench him. Would never bat him 8th. Good of them to trade for him but it was just because they were desperate.

3 examples of 2 strikes. Many hitters would take these borderline pitches and risk going down looking. I prefer to go down swinging with a young player. Many would try to pull these pitches. I like to see going opposite with power. Someone on third to tag. Warmer weather. Different location. Much rather see a younger player hitting the ball hard in the air instead of old washed up ready for retirement Pham.

He just struck out with the bases loaded
Well you fail more times than you succeed. Can’t live and die by 1 at bat. Have to look at bigger picture. Look what he is doing now. Look at what he can potentially do. How’s he going to look after he seen a pitcher already. He’s played so little he’s never seen many of these pitchers. He been riding the bench. Knows there is a guy making 4m ready to take his job. As a pirate fan you must be used to seeing guys strike out with bases loaded right? But yeah bad time to post my comment!!!!!!!!
Bright side. The other two options Pham Gorski could have easily struck out as well. Even more so I believe they have much higher k rates.
I wasn’t disagreeing with you about Canario, just saying that the irony of how well he puts the ball in play was wasted by his strikeout
Something about how terrible Cherington and Shelton.
I’m almost hoping they get fired, so that way when their replacements produce exactly the same with the resources provided, people will put two and two together and realize it won’t matter until ownership changes hands.
Unlikely, but one can hope.
The major problem I have with both Shelton and Cherington, together, they use analytics to determine the lineup
We don’t have the talent to use analytics
Separately, Shelton doesn’t use discipline when the players don’t run to first base after making an out or even run hard to try and beat the throw
Players have been caught on camera eating pumpkin seeds and not paying attention to the game
It may seem silly but it’s ineffective if he can’t keep them in line
Shelton wants to be friends with the players and not be a leader
Cherington’s problem and there’s many, he’s had 6 years to develop draft picks into being major league hitters and has failed miserably
Nobody is going to tell you ownership isn’t a greater problem than management. But management isn’t good either, and that’s at least one thing that can change without someone outright dying. Over the last 2 Triple-A games, Bubba Chandler, Mike Burrows, and Braxton Ashcraft combined for 14 innings of 1 run ball. You know what the Pirates’ opt to keep in the Major Leagues? Colin Holderman, who’s given up 1 earned run in 7 of 9 games this year, Carmen Mlodzinski, who’s clearly a reliever and struggles horribly after the 3rd inning, and Kyle Nicolas, who has given up nearly as many earned runs as Paul Skenes has all year, but in 35 fewer games. Bring up Matt Gorski and he hits a home run in his first game? Great! Let’s also keep playing Alexander Canario semi-regularly. Jared Triolo struggling? Okay, let’s keep giving him playing time, and not our top ten prospect Nick Yorke. What are these decisions?
Ownership is the over-hanging problem, but management continues to shoot themselves in the foot with these baffling roste decisions.
Isiah kinered his falefa
Wild pitch by Bednar, Tatis scores, Bucs down 2-1 in the 9th
Unless the hapless Bucs can manage to score a run, give Bednar another loss on the season
What would have been so wrong with using a pinch hitter for Triolo in the bottom of the ninth inning down a run?
When the proverbial hit parade is on, Shelton will use pinch hitters
Triolo stinks at the plate, they need base runners
Shelton’s style of managing is plain horrible
I predict Shelton will be fired by months end…cherrington by after the season is over.
And with Shelton and his abysmal lineups…I’m wondering how long he leads off with Cruz and Reynolds second.
It’s being said that the coaching staff has altered skeenes pitching..also telling him to pitch to contact.
Why tinker with the guy when he’s the best pitcher in baseball. Could be why he hasn’t been sharp. Typical of the bungling pirate management
Cruz drew 4 walks yesterday and never made it past second base
What does that say about the hitters batting behind him)
They hit into 4 double plays as a team, every hit was a single
Good luck to Tanner, on his new opportunity!
Another fun fact about this horrendous team
Not only do they lead the majors in called third strikes but also hitting into double plays
And they lead the league in the most pathetic front office and manager and coaching staff.
Don’t expect a win today, Pham, Triolo, Davis are in the lineup, Bart is DH, Cutch not playing
Great lineup, Derek, keep playing guys who have been in a slump or can’t hit at all
Should be a double digit strike out performance by this minor league team pretending to be major league caliber players
Fans should never ever expect a win no matter the lineup.
How long do you really think before Shelton is fired, AI GM?
No idea. Should have fired him years ago. After this weekend now is a good time. Won’t be surprised if he makes it the entire season. Wild guesses hunches aren’t my thing. And it doesn’t matter who the manager is. GM is the problem. Why he hasn’t been fired. The stupid gm president owner thinks he’s good.
I cannot speak for AI( nee Dream) GM,but I would say it should have been at least two years ago.
Remember that Shelton is under contract this year,so he will have to last at least as long as Rowdy Tellez did last year for Nutting to get his money’s worth.
It takes guts to fire the manager at this point of the season.Kelly would take over, and is he any better?
Nutting just does not care at this point.
They are on a pace for 56 wins.
I hope that Nutting sees about 20 fans at the next home game.
This is abysmal.
Mendoza..Kelly is a Shelton clone…you need someone from outside.
Buck showalter, he’s 70. But I’d rather see someone like him that the barnum and Bailey circus we have now.
Shelton said this lineup is better that it shows. He is in so much denial
Shelton has to say that, Cosmo21, he’s speaking to a party of one, Bob Nutting.
Pham’s .190 average, Triolo’s .085 average and Davis’ .110 average are something to be proud of
I thought of Showalter six years ago but he may not have wanted it.
It probably would be his last chance now.
I guarantee that the fundamentals would be better and the lineup would not be pulled out of a hat.
I am just not sure though that he is better with a veteran club.
The more important thing is getting a good GM and like AI GM has said you need a top 5 GM with this owner and team and they are very difficult to find.
I would have had more respect for Cherington if he had had the guts to fire Shelton two years ago..He just is not a manager of personnel. He needed a Director of Operations over him and I am not talking about the clown president.Left on his own Cherington has done certain things reasonably well but does not see the entire picture and is slow to make changes and take chances. He has a difficult job and it really does rest with Nutting.
I feel sorry for the Pirates players but this team really has not been managed well.Shelton had no emotion when Bednar threw that pitch in the dirt yesterday and any decent ML catcher would have made sure that he kept the ball in front of him with the winning run on third base.
They will be getting rid of any players that they can at the trade deadline.
We are in for another rebuild hopefully under a full new cast.
Watching the pirates today is like watching a 4 stooges marathon.
And why is trillio at ss????
Triolo is playing because Shelton has his favorites despite the fact that Triolo can’t hit
Double digits strikeouts again and if they don’t score a run in the next 2 innings, shutout number 5 over the past 12 games
Also a loss in 9 of their last 11 games
Shelton needs to
Man 3..his play where he hesitated and the runner beat the throw, shows the incompetent coaching and quick thinking of some players. Inexcusable. Where’s peguero??
on the bench where good players go to die
Cosmo- I enjoy watching Stooges marathons.
They are much more entertaining than the Pirates.
Lol mendoza I watch them every Saturday night on ME tv…then watch it on reruns on pirate broadcasts
We were shut out by a rookie pitcher who had an ERA of over 6 at AAA this year
Gorski hits a 2 out triple and worthless Davis is called out on strikes
I read that Cherington after being asked during his weekly radio show about the slow start of the Bucs
Typical excuses, including some from the worst manager in baseball
If Shelton used Gorski as a pinch hitter, why didn’t he use Cutch to bat for Davis?
Bart is at DH, he could have put on the catcher gear
See, I just don’t understand Shelton’s logic when you’re down 4 runs, shouldn’t you use every player at your disposal to try and win?
Not in a meaningless regular season game. They weren’t coming back from 4 0. But Shelton will pinch hit losing by 10 final out of game lol.
it may be meaningless but they had lost 7 of their last 9 games prior to today
I am just stunned that Shelton doesn’t do enough to win a single game
I get it but you hate to change catchers. You hate to get rid of dh. Doing both is extreme. The backup catcher is playing for a reason. Late 30s guy is getting off day for reason. Tied game. Down a run ok. But down four nah. 7 out of 10 times Cutch will fail. Coming in cold off bench more like 8 out of 10. Davis 8 and a half out of 10. Is it worth the trouble for such tiny odds losing 4 0? You really think Cutch would got hit? 2 to 3 out of 10 times so maybe. Pirates score 5 runs to win game? Extremely bad odds. Let Bart rest. Catching is hard on body.
Davis failed bust. They couldn’t develop him. Well taking him out isn’t a confidence booster now is it? What you are really suggesting is to dfa Davis. Nothing left for him to do in minors. You can’t be pinch hitting for someone every time they come up with runners in scoring position. So it’s either let Davis bat or dfa him.
I’m all in favor of dfa Davis but then who becomes the backup catcher?
Cherington and his lack of leadership, let Delay go.
Didn’t resign Grandal
Endy is hurt
And I get your point about Cutch and his chances of getting a hit
By the way, Hayes was picked off at second because he wasn’t paying attention and then on a double steal attempt, Davis threw down to third and would have caught Machado but Hayes again wasn’t paying attention and the ball nearly went into the outfield
It has become a 3 ring circus with Shelton as the ringleader
It really is too bad about Henry but maybe he just cannot hit.
The Pirates did not really give him the best of chances though.
I still think that they could get something for him and Jack.
Maybe a new regime would see their situations more clearly.
Record is already so bad. Had injuries. Missed mostly this off season. I would just stick with Davis Endy. Both can catch. Both could possibly hit. See what they can do. Trade them if anyone is interested but probably so low you might as well just play them. Neither is likely to go anywhere. Especially Davis. Cherington gave him a strong endorsement.
Problem is these guys are likely fighting for their jobs. Anyone here want to give Pham Frazier IKF an extension to have them for 2026 2027 2028 2029? You have Canario Gorski Peguero for those years at minimum wage. Those guys should be playing. Least amount Gorski. He looks like your backup weak platoon outfielder. Next Peguero. Can play SS and had all star potential. Hasn’t shown it in years though. Canario has to play. Has all star potential and has been showing it all of April. Canario has very little playing time but has improved every year. Really broke out so far this April.
I don’t think much of Pham. Good chance this is the most playing time he ever has in a year again. Maybe even last year. Canario isn’t a free agent until 2031.
Gorski hit a triple as a pinch hitter yesterday then singled playing first late in the game
Pham doesn’t have a triple, he barely hits it out of the infield
Bart isn’t in his late 30’s, he’s 28 but I get your point
Was at today’s game – and honestly I found myself paying more attention to out of town scores than the Pirates. The energy around the team is dreadful, and the lineup is simply pathetic.
That is what happens to the players on a mismanaged poorly run team that never has winning seasons.
These guys are only human.
Most of them are still trying but they have very little chance to win when they play good teams.
People made fun of Sean Rodriguez when he was punching that barrel but that is the type of player that you need on a team like this.
Another failed lineup for tonight’s game
Pham and Triolo who couldn’t themselves out of a paper bag, Pereugo still on the bench and Carmen’s 3 innings at best on the mound
another in a long line of failed offense by a team being managed by the worst in baseball
4 hits, 1 run, 9 strikeouts
How Cherington and Shelton still have their jobs is beyond comprehension
6 losses in a row and 10 losses in their last 11 games
I had predicted 75 wins for the season but I am positive that they will lose 100 games now
75 wins? Ha, they did nothing in the offseason to even field a 75 win team.
I was trying to be optimistic, but that prediction was obviously wrong.
Through 4 innings in today’s game, the Bucs have been called out on strikes 5 times already
When I played in both Little League and Farm League 55+ years back, we were taught to protect the plate, fouling off a pitch closer to the zone
These guys just stand there and wait for the umpire to call them out on strikes.
As a team, they lead the majors in called third strikes, hitting into double plays, and the worst fielding average
Yet Shelton still has his job
How can every player be in a slump at the same time?
It’s a continuous embarrassment for being a Pirate fan
7 shutouts and first 36 games, first time since 1985 and before, 1955
Shelton should lose his job over this including having lost 7 games in a row and 10th of their last 11 games
I realize that a different manager probably won’t be better, yet a change would tell the fans that perpetual losing is unacceptable
I’m so over the pirates. And that’s hard for me to say. Lifeling fan. But I can’t stand to see Shelton and cherrington destroy the franchise, along with nutting.
Another thing is I hope skenes leaves. Before the grossly inefficient coaching staff ruins him. Talk is that Marin was tinkering with his delivery. And it shows that he’s not as effective as last year. He’s still better than 95% of the pitchers today. But I hope these screwball don’t ruin him like the others that they have ruined.
Why would you tinker with a phenomenon. Only Shelton and cherrington would do this.
