The Pirates are selecting the contract of right-hander Tanner Rainey, according to a club announcement. Right-hander Justin Lawrence was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room for Rainey on the 40-man roster, while Rainey’s active roster spot will come at the expense of infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The veteran utility man is being placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain, and the move is retroactive to May 1.
Rainey, 32, signed with the Pirates on a minor league deal back in December after being non-tendered by the Nationals just a couple of weeks prior. Originally drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft by the Reds, Rainey debuted with Cincinnati back in 2018 but was flipped to Washington prior to the 2019 season and has spent the vast majority of his career in the nation’s capital. In parts of six seasons with the Nats, Rainey has generally been a serviceable middle reliever with a 4.49 ERA (94 ERA+) and a 28.5% strikeout rate in his 182 1/3 innings of work.
Those numbers are decent enough, and he even earned some run as the club’s closer while the team was rebuilding in 2022 as he picked up 12 saves, but Rainey’s hefty 14.1% walk rate largely locked him out of the late innings with the club. His performance in 2024, when he pitched to a 4.76 ERA (86 ERA+) with a 5.42 FIP and a 12.6% walk rate against a strikeout rate of just 19.0%, was enough to convince the Nationals to move on from him rather than pay him an arbitration-level salary. Even so, the Pirates were interested enough in his strikeout-heavy profile to bring him into the fold as a potential depth option. He’ll now get a new big league opportunity with his third organization amid a season where the Pirates’ bullpen has largely been in flux.
Meanwhile, Kiner-Falefa exits Pittsburgh’s positional mix after hitting .280/.333/.330 in 109 plate appearances across his first 30 games of the year. The veteran’s lack of power means that line is overall good for a wRC+ of 87, but he’s been getting on base at a solid clip, keeping his strikeouts under control, and playing solid defense as the club’s reular shortstop. The Pirates will need to figure things out at the position without Kiner-Falefa’s steady glove, and that could be easier said than done. It would be a surprise if the Pirates opted to move Oneil Cruz back onto the infield dirt after he’s worked to improve as their everyday center fielder, which could leave the club to rely on Jared Triolo as its everyday shortstop for the time being.
As for Lawrence, it was revealed earlier this week that Lawrence was headed for a second opinion on his elbow injury. The diagnosis from that second opinion has not yet been revealed, but his transfer to the 60-day IL seems to indicate that Pittsburgh brass are expecting a fairly lengthy absence for their right-hander. It’s a frustrating blow to the Pirates’ bullpen, as his 11 1/3 innings of work with the club have been nothing short of fantastic with a 0.79 ERA and a 2.53 FIP. Lawrence was one of the biggest pleasant surprises of the Pirates’ young season so far, and now they’ll need to hope that Rainey or one of their other bullpen arms can similarly surprise and pick up the slack.
About time. Maybe they can win a few more games now??
Not likely.
BadMojo;
Mr. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a solid major league player….of which the ever-rebuilding Pirates have very few. The man is a gold glove 3B – not that 3B is that important of a defensive position – but he can also play a solid, above-average major league SS and 2B.
Most rebuilds fail. And one sign of it is when their frustrated fans take it out on some of the decent veteran players stuck on the team…..as if they’re supposed to carry a bunch of over-hyped under-performing young players.
Rebuild wasn’t good. Wasn’t even average. But not a failure. Failure was keeping Cherington Shelton and not getting someone who could fill in the missing pieces.
All they had to do was sign Canha to play 1b. Sign any outfielder not named Tommy Pham. Not used their worst relievers in the most crucial situations. 500 team if they do that. Bubba should have been called up already. Carmen to pen.
Agree about Cherington Shelton.
But to fill in missing pieces for a contending baseball team you have to have a foundation at least partially built of quality defense up the middle (that can also hit some) and pitching. Then the team has to be playing fundamental baseball on D and O – those 2 parts go back to Cherington Shelton. Baseball IQ and commitment to do “the little things” and be proactive is mandatory.
Anyway, what is is. It’s not just the owner not spending money…..it’s the owner letting the situation go on as long as it did. I think Pittsburgh sports fans are not dumb, they understand pro baseball as well as pro football and hockey. They deserve better. Mr. Skenes’ agent needs to get him out of there. They’ll ruin his career.
I gave them half a dozen names better than Pham. They don’t listen to me. Not fantasy names. Guys making around 5 million or less. Didn’t think Pham would be this bad but that’s the risk you take signing a older player.
There’s pitching talent in minors. All the websites have Konnor Griffin way too low. One of the best prospects in baseball. Too far away to help now but can be the piece to build around after Cruz Skenes. If they develop him. Although he may be able to develop himself. Incredible kid.
IKF may not hit for any power, but the guy gets on-base and collects some htis at a decent rate, because having him at the bottom of the line-up was worthwhile, even with a low OPS/no power. Losing him right now really hurts. The offense is doing better, but we still have way too many blackholes in Pham, Canario, and Triolo. They’re essentially running a 6-man line-up out there most of the time.
You’ve been talking to Peter Brand. Stats not special but he gets on base.
IKF is terrible. Don’t kid yourself.
Hasn’t looked terrible for the Pirates this year. .280 avg, above-average OBP, he’s been a very good 9-hole hitter.
Considering that IKF has no power or hits many doubles but steals bases, he should have been batting lead off so in the event Cruz hits one of those 500 footers homers, he’s not the only run being driven in
But it won’t matter much, weak hitting Triolo will take IKF’s place and Rainey’s 5+ ERA will certainly give runs back to the opponent even if they do somehow get a lead
Lol brighteyes thinks Canario is a black hole! He makes Shelton Cherington look like Einstein.
They called up peugaro earlier. In glad they did that. But why do they insist on bringing up these 30 something journeyman. They need the young guys up here. Mystifying move
They sent down straton and called up peurgaro
They should have played him over weak hitting Triolo.
Couldn’t have done any worse
I agree with you, but who knows what goes on in Shelton empty head
What young guys? There are none that are ready. TJ might be able to make it up later this year. Not as exciting as when drafted but looks like a MLB player.
Anyone over Triolo though. I’d rather see Peguero any day. Yorke needed some minor league time but get him up.
Frazier has been serviceable. Good when trying to contend but if they keep losing let a younger man get some reps. Maybe keep him as last guy and dump Pham. Pham goes first.
It’s called saving their money in the long run
I agree, Pham is indeed a black hole in the offense and Triolo is at best, a late inning replacement but I am surprised, Canario is putting the ball in play in each of his plate appearances
On the other hand, Bart is in a slump and should be batting behind Hayes
But overall this team has too many guys who can’t hit consistently to make them competitive
Another year down the proverbial drain
Some short 20 second clips every pirates fan should watch. I loved the Canario trade. A+. It’s paid off. He’s been excellent. It’s tragic they benched him for so long. If they had any idea of what they were doing they would never bench him. Would never bat him 8th. Good of them to trade for him but it was just because they were desperate.

3 examples of 2 strikes. Many hitters would take these borderline pitches and risk going down looking. I prefer to go down swinging with a young player. Many would try to pull these pitches. I like to see going opposite with power. Someone on third to tag. Warmer weather. Different location. Much rather see a younger player hitting the ball hard in the air instead of old washed up ready for retirement Pham.

He just struck out with the bases loaded
Well you fail more times than you succeed. Can’t live and die by 1 at bat. Have to look at bigger picture. Look what he is doing now. Look at what he can potentially do. How’s he going to look after he seen a pitcher already. He’s played so little he’s never seen many of these pitchers. He been riding the bench. Knows there is a guy making 4m ready to take his job. As a pirate fan you must be used to seeing guys strike out with bases loaded right? But yeah bad time to post my comment!!!!!!!!
Bright side. The other two options Pham Gorski could have easily struck out as well. Even more so I believe they have much higher k rates.
I wasn’t disagreeing with you about Canario, just saying that the irony of how well he puts the ball in play was wasted by his strikeout
Something about how terrible Cherington and Shelton.
I’m almost hoping they get fired, so that way when their replacements produce exactly the same with the resources provided, people will put two and two together and realize it won’t matter until ownership changes hands.
Unlikely, but one can hope.
The major problem I have with both Shelton and Cherington, together, they use analytics to determine the lineup
We don’t have the talent to use analytics
Separately, Shelton doesn’t use discipline when the players don’t run to first base after making an out or even run hard to try and beat the throw
Players have been caught on camera eating pumpkin seeds and not paying attention to the game
It may seem silly but it’s ineffective if he can’t keep them in line
Shelton wants to be friends with the players and not be a leader
Cherington’s problem and there’s many, he’s had 6 years to develop draft picks into being major league hitters and has failed miserably
Nobody is going to tell you ownership isn’t a greater problem than management. But management isn’t good either, and that’s at least one thing that can change without someone outright dying. Over the last 2 Triple-A games, Bubba Chandler, Mike Burrows, and Braxton Ashcraft combined for 14 innings of 1 run ball. You know what the Pirates’ opt to keep in the Major Leagues? Colin Holderman, who’s given up 1 earned run in 7 of 9 games this year, Carmen Mlodzinski, who’s clearly a reliever and struggles horribly after the 3rd inning, and Kyle Nicolas, who has given up nearly as many earned runs as Paul Skenes has all year, but in 35 fewer games. Bring up Matt Gorski and he hits a home run in his first game? Great! Let’s also keep playing Alexander Canario semi-regularly. Jared Triolo struggling? Okay, let’s keep giving him playing time, and not our top ten prospect Nick Yorke. What are these decisions?
Ownership is the over-hanging problem, but management continues to shoot themselves in the foot with these baffling roste decisions.
Isiah kinered his falefa
Wild pitch by Bednar, Tatis scores, Bucs down 2-1 in the 9th
Unless the hapless Bucs can manage to score a run, give Bednar another loss on the season
What would have been so wrong with using a pinch hitter for Triolo in the bottom of the ninth inning down a run?
When the proverbial hit parade is on, Shelton will use pinch hitters
Triolo stinks at the plate, they need base runners
Shelton’s style of managing is plain horrible
I predict Shelton will be fired by months end…cherrington by after the season is over.
And with Shelton and his abysmal lineups…I’m wondering how long he leads off with Cruz and Reynolds second.
It’s being said that the coaching staff has altered skeenes pitching..also telling him to pitch to contact.
Why tinker with the guy when he’s the best pitcher in baseball. Could be why he hasn’t been sharp. Typical of the bungling pirate management
Good luck to Tanner, on his new opportunity!
