With around 20% of the MLB regular season now in the books, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on heading into the weekend:
1. Hoglund to debut:
The A’s have gotten off to a nice start this year with a 17-15 record, tying them for second place in the AL West with the Astros, just two games behind the Mariners. It’s a massive turnaround for a team that lost 205 games across the previous two seasons, but lackluster starting pitching has held them back somewhat to this point in the season. The club’s 4.88 FIP from their starters is the third-worst figure in baseball, ahead of only the Angels and Orioles.
Reinforcements will be necessary if the A’s hope to continue competing, but help could be on the way as soon as today. The Athletics are calling up prospect Gunnar Hoglund for his big league debut, and MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos specified yesterday evening that he’ll be tasked with starting tonight’s game against the Marlins. The game is scheduled for 7:10pm local time in Miami and will see Hoglund square off against an as of yet unannounced Marlins pitcher. Hoglund is already on the A’s 40-man roster, though a corresponding move will still be necessary to make room for the righty on the active roster.
2. Buehler undergoing testing:
The Red Sox rotation got healthier with the returns of Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito, but it appears that healthy group of arms may be relatively short lived. As noted by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, Walker Buehler was scratched from his scheduled start for today due to some “discomfort” in his shoulder.
Buehler underwent testing in Boston yesterday. The results have not yet been made clear, but manager Alex Cora told reporters (including Joe Braverman of WEEI) that team trainers believe the issue isn’t “too alarming.” Cora added that Buehler making a start this weekend remains a possibility and that any IL stint would be a relatively short one. Even so, losing Buehler for any period of time would be a frustrating turn of events, given that the right-hander has bounced back from early-season struggles to post a 2.59 ERA in his last four starts.
3. Series Preview: Cubs @ Brewers
The Cubs have raced out to a 19-13 record to this point despite a difficult schedule that included series against the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Padres. Chicago only just had their first series of the season against the NL Central this week, where they beat Paul Skenes to take two of three against the Pirates. Today, they’ll be faced with a tougher challenge from within their division when they head to Milwaukee to face the Brewers.
The NL Central champions in each of the past two seasons (and three of the past four), Milwaukee has opened the 2025 season with a 16-16 record. They’ve lost six of their past ten games against the Giants, Cardinals, and White Sox. Even so, a sweep of the Cubs this weekend would be enough to catapult them right back into the mix for the NL Central lead, as both teams would leave the series with identical 19-16 records. The series kicks off this evening with a pair of young righties battling it out: 25-year-old Ben Brown takes the mound for the Cubs against 24-year-old Quinn Priester, whom the Brewers just acquired from the Red Sox last month. Jameson Taillon and Jose Quintana are slated to face off tomorrow in a clash of steady veterans, and the series wraps on Sunday with a duel between each team’s top starter: lefty Shota Imanaga and right-hander Freddy Peralta.
Andrew Abbott plus for Tyler soderstrom
Sode is about to be locked up by West Sacramento soon.
Andrew abbot and Candelario plus plus for soderstrom
They’ll throw in a SodaStream machine
Hopefully it’s not too serious with Buehler, but considering his injury history there’s obviously reason for concern.
He’s pitched better recently, but you have to look at the competition in those four games …. the offenses are all ranked between 19th-27th. Not exactly tough competition.
Maybe he’s just trying to get an extra day off?
Meow – Good one!
Since he and Bregman own a racehorse together, maybe Buehler will be spotted at the Derby tomorrow singing “My Old Kentucky Home”.
Since they own a racehorse together, I guess that means Bregman’s dad’s Ferrari is safe.
Reds – Bregman is making the jockey run their horse backwards in the Derby, hoping to take off 10 furlongs.
As long as they don’t drink to many to mint juleps!! My first was 88 and bourbon was early times…( paint thinner )my last in 99 i believe it was makers mark or Woodford… that’s the equivalent of the 2024 White Sox to the 27 Yankees!!! So pissed… no live wagering in Illinois on derby.. must get app… no can do….if Burnham harbor wins you’ll hear my scream at Fenway!!!
olm – Yeah like everything else in this world, things not as good anymore because of greed.
20-horse race and no odds bigger than 30/1 ….. that’s ridiculous.
I told you already one horse I have my eye on, got another tip from a movie I just saw. Neither is a longshot though.
I’ve got Burnham in my only Supa, so as long as he comes in Top 4 I’m happy.
I’ll be in on Race 5-12 tomorrow, gonna miss the Oaks today though.
It’s a good thing that I pay for Marquee and MLB.com so that I CAN’T watch the game tonight. Don’t want to say that billionaires are greedy POS but seems to be the point of my message.
Mike – Sometimes the little guy wins ….. my team’s Apple game last Friday got rained out …… loved it!
MLB is conducting a huge survey, one of the questions was about games being broadcast on so many different providers. Hopefully others responded the same way I did.
Greed is good
That you, Donny?
Same thing happens in the NFL and they even do it for dang playoff games.
And since you’re really old there’s nothing wrong with just turning on the transistor and listening a game on the AM dial.
That you Elon?
Mike, I think this is a good chance to get in touch with your feminine side. Maybe take in a ballet or chick flick tonight.
Early Times is ok, but your analogy is spot on. And if you ever get the chance, take a few days to do The Bourbon Trail thru Kentucky. The Makers distillery alone is worth the trip, but the underrated hero of the trail is Heaven Hill. Both they and Makers are generous with the samples, but Heaven Hill makes sure you get to taste a couple shots of $500 a bottle 12 yr old bourbon. It was hands down the best liquid of any type, that I’ve ever put in my body
Cubby – There’s a morning dial?
Bucket—please don’t encourage anything. We will have to endure countless conversations on Hoyer botching it and casting Ryan Gosling instead of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Notebook. It’s a perfectly good Friday…let’s keep it that way.
Cubs… thanks for the tip!! ET was drink of choice early on in life… Cicero… more bars per square foot than anywhere in Illinois!! My bartender use to give me the supermarket special when I would order it… buy 1 get one free!!!
Good luck!!! I saw he got in with scratch… JB like him alot on pick show I watched this morning… favorite jock ever!! More than a few picks with him in CIGAR silks( not riding cigar those times) also had grindstone back in the day!!!
Bucket- I don’t have a feminine side to get in touch with.
I never thought I’d see Walker Beuhler play anywhere but LA.
He’s had 2 TJ surgeries, and the LAD FO must have felt the risk was too great given that most of their rotation misses 1/4 – 1/3 of the season with some sort of injury annually.
Dodgers do not sign many home grown or traded for guys. They typically do walk
Buehler injured? I’m shocked!
Thoughts and prayers to the Red Sox…
York – Prayers won’t help, my understanding is Sox ownership are atheists.
FPG’s understand is literally based on nothing.
Temporary home or not, the A”s are winnin’ now that they’re swingin’. They’re actually 3rd in the AL West going into the weekend — H0uston is 2nd by 2 percentage points with 2 games in hand.
It’s a fun team to watch this year and in the future. Good core of players.
They would be more exciting under a new owner that’s for sure.
A’s did well to feast to 5-1 record against WSox, so the party in that respect is over early in season that others will get later. The 12-14 record against others better measure, but with no powers in ALW division they can foreseeably compete head-to-head.
Poll: Can the cubs keep up this pace?
1. No!
2. NO!
3. He’ll no!
Not a Cub fan, but they have a nice lineup with Tucker onboard this year against a tough early schedule. Most clubs will be fighting the injuries to starters in perpetuity if they are incentivized for K rates/max effort in lieu of going deeper into games.
Just checked the updated Vegas win totals. Cubs need not play anywhere near this pace to win the division. Updated totals:
Cubs 93.5
Brewers 82.5
Reds 79.5
Cards 76.5
Pirates 68.5
Cubs play .500 the rest of the way and finish with 84.
Was hoping for 15-16 through April…got 18-13.
Looking for 17-10 in May.
I remember back in 1969, with about 40 games to go, Jerome Holtzman and others were writing that, if the Cubs played JUST .500 the rest of the way, the Mets would have to play .667 to catch them, so don’t worry, the Cubs were in, they would win the division.
What happened is that the Cubs played about .400 the rest of the way, the Mets won about 30 out of 40, and the Mets won the division by eight games.
Since then, I have disregarded the kind of analysis Cubby 2025–and Vegas, for that matter–provides. It does not signify anything.
If the Cubs don’t find a way to add 2 starting pitchers and a third baseman, and soon, they are not going to win the division. The bullpen isn’t good enough either, though some fans are over-focusing on that. It is a problem, but not their worst one.
As a Chicago guy… you had me at Jerome Holtzman!!! … only would buy sun times during triple crown races for Dave Feldman reports…
Cubby 2025, the standings are irrelevant until Memorial Day weekend
Thanks Fred. Some would argue the 4th of July. Some much, much later. I really said nothing about the standings but glad I know the proclaimed time to start looking.
And I would chime in about the irrelevance of standings until Labor Day weekend. To each their own…
With info and data like this why bother to play the games. Let’s go 2020 all the time and find new activities
That reds total looks like a solid bet. They have played a weak schedule but they are also going to get better over the season. Lots of prospects and injured players coming back
@avenger65
So far, nothing is suggesting that they can’t. BABIP is sitting around .300, which is usually in the league average range. wRC+ is 124 and they’re doing a decent job of not striking out and walking around or above league average. They had their hardest month of the season and came out of it pretty well so unless some significant injuries come out of nowhere, such as Tucker being out for the season for some reason, I think they should be able to sustain it. Sure, they’re probably going to see some more losses but I don’t see them slowing down too much, assuming all goes well.
@York: Hope you’re right. But aren’t you worried about the rotation? I sure am.
@Alan53
It’s possible that there will be some regression for their pitching but I don’t think it will be significant.
Their rotation has a K-rate of 21.0% and a BB-rate of 7.5%.. Their BABIP is .285, which is a bit below the league average of around .300, so we should expect some regression there. Given the difference in ERA & SIERA/FIP, we should expect their rotation to regress to more of an ERA around 4.00-4.20, similar to the SIERA/FIP/xFIP.
A 4.10 ERA (from 3.59) adds ~0.5 runs/game, or ~80 runs over 162 games. With 6 RPG offense, their Pythagorean win total drops from ~104 to ~94-96 wins, likely more than enough for an NL Central title.
The Bullpen is suspect. High ERA and a closer who hasn’t really been tested yet. It was built by Hoyer, the reclamation king and I’m not holding my breath.
avenger – Cubs have had the hardest schedule in MLB, and they have the highest RPI, so they are looking really good right now.
As a reds fan I wish but right now they’ve got a scary good offense…
I think the Cubs can keep it up, but the Mets on the other hand…
@Ignorant Son-of-a-b
How ’bout dem Mariners… Should I wait to eat crow?
I won’t make you eat crow no matter what. But remember last season they were in first place until June something and then sputtered and missed playoffs by one game. So I’m going to be pragmatic and not toot any horns or talk any big game for quite awhile.
Oh come on. How can you not have the Rockies winning streak as part of the Opener? It’s the first one this year.
hiflew – The Rockies can’t wait to play Boston in July. Colorado took the season series last year including a 20-7 win.
Missed an extra point iirc
Can’t go by last year. The Rockies won 8 out of 13 against the Padres in 2024 and recently spent a 3 game series in San Diego completely scoreless.
I do remember that 20-7 game quite well though. One of the highlights of a low year.
hiflew – Rockies won the season series against the Red Sox in 2023 also, they seem to have their number.
ChiSox worrying about that July series against the Rockies where they might end up winning 2 of 3 or sweeping the series.
Actually, it will be all about beating the Cubs. That will be the Sox’ World Series.
They should probably make the Friday, July 4th game the Apple TV game since nobody will be watching anyways.
Yes, the White Sox have been unhealthily (and unhelpfully, in terms of their own interests) obsessed with the Cubs for a long time, in small, petty ways. Did you know, for instance, that when giving the day’s scores on the Sox’ post-game radio show, the host omits the Cubs score, win or lose? Some power-that-is in the Sox front office will not allow the word “Cubs” to pass through the host’s lips. Silly.
Reds are a trade from walking away with the Central. Need just 1 mashing OF. Look at their SP. Zoooom gone by July 4th EASY.
