Tigers Outright Tomas Nido

By Anthony Franco | May 23, 2025 at 9:43pm CDT

The Tigers announced that catcher Tomás Nido cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo. The veteran backstop has the right to decline the assignment in favor of free agency, though the team did not provide any indication that he’d do that.

Nido spent six weeks on Detroit’s big league roster while Jake Rogers was down with a left oblique strain. The 31-year-old backed up Dillon Dingler and was mostly productive in a tiny sample. Nido collected 12 hits in 10 games, batting .343 in the process. That came in just 35 at-bats, though, and Nido’s much bigger MLB track record is that of a well below-average hitter. He has a lifetime .215/.249/.310 slash in nearly 1000 big league plate appearances. He was hitting .160 in six Triple-A games before the Tigers called him up.

Teams clearly remained skeptical about Nido’s hitting ability, this year’s small-sample success notwithstanding. He’s out of options, so any team that claimed him would have needed to carry him on the MLB roster themselves. The Tigers would surely be happy to retain him as non-roster depth in Toledo. Nido has a positive defensive reputation and plenty of upper minors experience. Rogers and Dingler are the only catchers on the 40-man roster, so Nido would probably be the first one back up if either of the big league catchers suffered a future injury.

Tigers would love to keep him and sent him to
Toledo and off the 40 man roster. I expect other teams would like him for the same reason. Good defense and great to be at AAA if you need him.

He did a underrated and decent job in 2022. If only the Mets hadn’t traded for Ruf and Vogelfat that year. What were they thinking?

They went on an analytic deep dive. They thought between the two of Ruf and Vogelbach they’d have a complete DH position handling righties and lefties. It completely blew up in their face unfortunately

Learn the lesson that Reese McGuire just learned.

That might be a hanging offense in Korea. Or maybe it’s just N. Korea. LOL

Catchers like Nido are readily available. His hitting was a fluke, a nice one for the Tigers, but even if he would have been lost, it wouldn’t have been difficult to replace him.

The Tigers replaced Nido a career .212 hitter with Jake Rogers a career .202 hitter. Dingler should see most of the ABs at catcher for the Tigers (.298 BA). Go Tigers!

Rogers can hit a home run every now and then, which makes him a better hitter.

And Rogers is superior to Nido defensively

Tigers did not play a good game last night. Defensively, they did not make plays I thought they should have.

I saw two hits to the outfield that should have been outs. At least one led to a run scored. Then, Dingler failed to cut down Ramirez stealing as the throw was errant. He went on to score. Sweeney’s weak arm was on display when he failed to get anything on the ball when throwing it to first.

And Jobe… seems to me he gives up his runs in the first most times. Then, he settles in and is quite effective after the first.

I did like Vierling getting that AB in the bottom of the 9th. Clase didn’t choke this time. He was throwing heat!

I’ll be glad when Meadows is back and Javy goes back to SS. Not because Javy hasn’t done a good job in CF, just because Meadows can play CF very well, and Javy plays SS very well, but Trey Sweeney doesn’t.

I’m thinking they might end up trying Baez out in RF when Meadows comes back. Especially after last night.

Trey Sweeney graded significantly better than Baez at SS last year and is in top half of SS in pretty much every metric. But don’t let facts get in the way of a two-game stretch of sub optimal play

I cannot find the posting for Vierling addition in MLB Trade Rumors. Do you happen to know who they took off the roster when they added Vierling? Thank you and sorry to ask.

They optioned Guenther when Vierling came back.

Thank you. I thought it would have been Baddoo. After Baddoo, Lee or Ibanez will go down in my view.

Guenther was sent down when he was activated at the espn transactions on the Tigers page anyway. Seems like it wudda been Baddoo though. Especially considering that they still have Malloy, too.

Baddoo will get the ziggy (a Dick Vitale saying) today when Mize gets added. Seems out of sequence, but Guenther wasn’t going to pitch yesterday after throwing 2+ on Thursday so might as well keep Bad-doo for one last game. I hope it was his last in a Tiger uniform. Buh-bye!

Was rooting for Baddoo, but all you need to do is throw 2 curve balls in the dirt and then a neck high fastball & you have an easy 3 pitch KO

Isn’t that the truth. Thursday night Tigers are down 3-0 in the 7th inning. 3 men on and nobody out. In that situation the batter has to find a way to get at least one run. But here comes Baddoo 3 pitches and he struck out. Any batter in that spot has to put the ball in play or walk. Even hitting into a double play that leeds to a run is better than striking out.

Baddoo did EXACTLY what I and several others said he would upon his call up…nothing. He’s a 4-A hitter. He can hit a AAA fastball but cannot square up MLB 2-seamers and sinkers, or time up MLB off speed stuff.

He had the best inning defensively of his life, then reminded everyone of his limitations a day later with his weak arm and throws that bounce 3x to cut off men

I would like to see them offer Skubal a premium deal 10% over market starting this next season. Throw on a signing bonus. Have it increase 4% per year. Make it a 10 year deal. This is unheard of for pitchers. If they pass on the offer then you know he is walking after the 2026 season. If he does not take the offer then I would look into trading to the highest bidder after the 2025 season. The Tigers would get multiple elite young players. It keeps it churning. They might get their title this year.

We’ve got him until the trade deadline next year.
We offer him a realistic contract, which for his skill set, will be a doozy !
If he declines, trade him to the highest bidder, and move on….
      It’s all business.

As sad or frustrating as it is…there is pretty much a guarantee that Boras will take Skubal to the open market in an effort to create a pitching version of Soto’s contract. The only thing that could alter that is the CBA talks–if agents think a hard cap could be coming (despite a presumed lockout again) mayyyybe agents during 2026 season may be more inclined to get their guys locked up during 26/27 ahead of a ’28 stoppage

      Why would they want to

Someone claims him and his MLB min salary or they get him through waivers and get him to AAA for depth.

Tigers I’d assume really didn’t want to lose the only real #3 C option in the org

The only teams that will trade for him are the ones that salaries don’t matter. Dodgers and Yankees for sure. Maybe the Mets, Angel’s, Red Sox, Phillies. Smaller market teams are not going to be able to afford him. Every team would like to have him.

Sorry for confusion. I was replying to the Skubal note above. A lot teams would like Tomas and everyone could afford him. I hoping he will accept the outright to Toledo.
